Using KPIs in decision-making tools in the construction industry

Hedin, Nathalie, Zander, Adrian January 2019 (has links)
The construction industry has a great opportunity to streamline its operations even more by making greater use of the digital revolution. The industry today uses a lot of manual data management and analysis to get an overview of the business and to make decisions. This can be a time-consuming process that could be made more efficient through Business Intelligence (BI). BI is a technology that automatically, with the help of selected Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), shows the current status of how a business performs. This can allow managers and executives to make decisions easier and faster. This study examines which KPIs that are of common interest to companies and organizations in the construction industry as well as how these KPIs can be presented to the end users of a BI application. To investigate this, data is collected through literature studies and interviews, which results in a list of common KPIs for the industry. From this common list, a number of KPIs are selected to be visually represented. An analysis of the results, indicates that KPIs are of different importance and relevance depending on which sector of the construction industry the interviewee belongs to. There also appears to be sector-specific KPIs and the common list suggests that the profit margin is of great importance throughout the whole industry. KPIs can be represented in different types of charts and diagrams, depending on the purpose they hold, and should be designed so that they are intuitive and easy to understand.

LivelyViz: an approach to develop interactive collaborative web visualizations

Bazurto Blacio, Voltaire 03 January 2017 (has links)
We investigate the development of collaborative data dashboards, comprised of web visualization components. For this, we explore the use of Lively Web as a development platform and provide a framework for developing web collaborative scientific visualizations. We use a modern thin-client approach that moves most of the specific application processing logic from the client side to the server side, leveraging the implementation of reusable web services. As a web application, it provides users with multi-platform and multi-device compatibility along with enhanced concurrent access from remote locations. Our platform focuses on providing reusable, interactive, extensible and tightly- integrated web visualization components. Such visualization components are designed to be readily usable in distributed-synchronous collaborative environments. As use case we consider the development of a dashboard for researchers working with bioinformatics datasets, in particular Poxviruses data. We argue that our thin-client approach for developing web collaborative visualizations can greatly benefit researchers in different geographic locations in their mission of analyzing datasets as a team. / Graduate

Suivi de l’engagement des apprenants lors de la construction de cartes mentales à partir de traces d’interaction / Monitoring learners' engagement in mind mapping activities from interaction traces

Carrillo Rozo, Rubiela 11 March 2019 (has links)
Mind mapping activities require and support the implementation of meaningful learning strategies and enlighten the knowledge structure of the learner. However, teachers who integrate mind mapping into their educational activities have to deal with the final rendering of maps, and risk to misinterpret and wrongly evaluate them due to the lack of information about their construction process. In this thesis, we are interested in a posteriori observation of the engagement of learners along its behavioral and cognitive dimensions, in order to propose processoriented indicators that help to understand actions and construction choices of mind maps. We followed the Design Based Research methodology, that allowed us to propose three levels of contributions : 1) a theoretical model of engagement (behavioral and cognitive) for mind mapping activities, 2) a set of indicators of learner engagement constructed from automatically captured map building traces, and 3) a dashboard called MindMap Monitor presenting various indicators to teachers for class and learners monitoring. The model was obtained from a literature review on theories of engagement, including research in educational psychology. The indicators have been defined by comparing the model with the results of several field studies with teachers. The dashboard implementing the indicators was developed following three iterations. Its interface presents synthetic views allowing the comparison of students in the class, the identification of those in difficulty, and detailed views describing the mind mapping activity for each student. Our dashboard was evaluated with an experiment involving 12 teachers. We compared its use with that of final mind maps associated with videos of their construction process. Results show that our indicators on MindMap Monitor are useful to better identify students in difficulty, shared difficulties, as well as difficulties for individual students. Results concerning the understanding of the mind maps construction process are more balanced. We were also able to identify several ways to improve both the content and the visualizations of the dashboard. The perspectives of our work are mainly related to monitoring learners’ engagement in real time for the intervention and adaptation of the teachers’ educational strategies

The study aims to analyze the sustainable development of the Municipality of Goiania, using this method the Panel Sustentabiliade (Dashboard of Sustainability), which includes four dimensions: environmental, economic, social and institutional. For the analysis we used seven indicators in the economic dimension, environmental dimension in the 13 indicators, 22 indicators in the social and institutional dimension in the two indicators, totaling 44 indicators. We compared the latest data with the previous year. The main limitation of this study was to find reliable time series statistics. Given this difficulty can highlight the institutional dimension with only two indicators. The institutional and economic dimensions with better performance, while the environmental and social conditions were worse. The Dashboard of Sustainability is a useful tool to aid in the Public Managers in the measurement of sustainable development, based on better data consolidation. The difficulties portrayed in research concerning the absence of a systematic generation of statistical data for the municipality may also affect the development of public policy more efficient in dealing with sustainable development, as well as the measurement of these.

The Role of social media artifacts in collaborative software development

Treude, Christoph 13 August 2012 (has links)
Social media mechanisms, such as wikis, blogs, tags and feeds, have transformed the way we communicate, work and play online. Many of these technologies have made their way into collaborative software engineering processes and modern software development platforms, either as an adjunct or integrated into a wide range of tools ranging from code editors and issue trackers to IDEs and web-based portals. Based on the results of several large scale empirical studies, this thesis presents findings on how social media artifacts, such as tags, feeds and dashboards, bridge lightweight and heavyweight task management in software development. Furthermore, this work shows how blogs, developer wikis and Q&A websites are changing the way software is documented. Based on these findings, the thesis describes a model that characterizes social media artifacts along several dimensions, such as content type, intended audience, and review mechanisms. The role of social media artifacts in collaborative software development lies in the timely dissemination of scenarios and concerns to a diverse audience through a process of implicit and informal collaboration, triggered by questions from users or articulation work. These findings lead to tool and process recommendations as well as the implementation of tools that leverage social media artifacts, and they indicate that tool support inspired by social media may play an important role in improving collaborative software development practices. / Graduate

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 7985320 bytes, checksum: b62fc406031b14e7970624818fe47957 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Sustainability indicators are powerful tools that merge qualitative and quantitative aspects of multiple dimensions, thus guiding actions, giving support and assessing the progress toward the development sustainable. It is essential to apply these indicators in areas where there are large anthropogenic pressure as the coastal zone, where 40% of the world population lives. The research aim is to assess the degree of sustainability of the coastal zone of João Pessoa / PB through sustainability indicators. Therefore, we set the following specific goals: selecting indicators that are relevant to depict the degree of sustainability of the area; calculate the sustainability index of the region through the Dashboard of Sustainability Method and propose recommendations that can improve the indicators performance. The studies were conducted at the coastal zone of the João Pessoa / PB. Featuring stretch of 24 km the region is bordered to the north by the Bessa neighborhood and to the south by the Barra Gramame neighborhood. Were selected 17 indicators for that region and they can be divided into four dimensions: environmental, social, economic and institutional. The results demonstrate the sustainability index of the region was found at the intermediate level. However, when a comparison is made between the north area and south area we can observe some differences. On the southern coast of the region this index was found between the bad and the intermediate zone, while on the northern coast the sustainability index was found between the intermediate and reasonable zone. From these results we could produce an evaluation on the coastal area of João Pessoa that includes the social, economic, environmental and institutional dimensions and allow us to develop interventions aimed at improvements towards sustainability, as well as promoting a better insight into the complexity factors involved negatively on the stability of natural ecosystems present in the coastal zone of João Pessoa.

Presenting information through a dashboard for Smart Video evaluations : The process of developing a design for a marketing dashboard

Katarina, Hägglund January 2018 (has links)
Using the internet for watching videos or online shopping keeps growing, along with video advertisement to increase online sales. To know if the video actually increases the online sales, the owner of a video ad wants to do follow ups on how the video is doing, and get statistics. A different solution from the original video ads is Smart Video. It is an interactive video player with a clickable slideshow of products. This video can get even more types of statistics than a normal video, and today that statistic is not accessible for the Smart Video clients, without the help of someone from the Smart Video team that can create a report for them. The purpose of this thesis was to relieve the workload of the Smart Video team and to create a dashboard that shows all information that the clients find relevant about their videos. This paper is about the process of developing a design for a marketing dashboard, that follows the guidelines of information dashboard design by Stephen Few. The process included interviews, multiple designs, prototypes, and evaluations, before ending up with a prototype of a desktop solution that follows the aesthetics of Smart Video and can be realizable with the current technology.

Návrh controllingové koncepce s využitím systému "Business intelligence" / Designing a controlling concept using the business intelligence system

Hejdánek, Michal January 2017 (has links)
The Master Thesis deals with the use of the controlling concept in business management, Business Intelligence systems and their interconnection. The aim is to propose this integration link on the example of a particular company and at the same time to give management recommendations in areas that will be evaluated in the analysis as insufficient. The theoretical part of this thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first deals with the definition of controlling, its tools and organizations. The second one describes business intelligence, not just the basic principles of this technology, but also the choice of tools and the implementation process are explained. The following chapter lists two software tools that combine controlling and business intelligence in practice. The practical part is divided into a general description of the company, analysis of the applied elements of controlling and then the proposal of solution of insufficient areas and the process of BI implementation, which contains 12 steps which would enable to implement the BI concept.

Realtidsuppdaterad dashboard / Realtime Updated Dashboard

Andersson, Robin, Franzén, Simon January 2017 (has links)
This report will be covering the creation of the Realtime-Updated Dashboard, made for Flex Applications. The Dashboard, which could be seen as an interactive pinboard, is a new product which will be implemented in Flex Applications existing system for employee administration. A deep-dive into the subject of information overload was also made during thedevelopment of the application. This was later used to question the design choices made. The results of this showed that there is no one correct way of designing an interface, but rather guidelines to help in certain situations. The application was written in the TypeScript language together with the framework Angular 2. The application was at first developed as a stand-alone project as there was no need for it to be integrated into the existing system from the start. This also gave a more relaxed environment while learning TypeScript and Angular2. The application was later integrated with the existing system. This integration was seen as a success as the handling of the data from the database worked as expected.
