Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications have historically been based on a single user per application architecture. Although this architecture is still popular to date, it does have several drawbacks. First of all the single user CAD architecture inhibits a concurrent engineering design process where several designers can work on the same model simultaneously. This limitation introduces time inefficiency especially when a project involves geographically dispersed designers. A solution to these drawbacks could be a transition from the traditional single user CAD architecture to a multiuser collaborative architecture. Advances in computer networking technologies, especially relating to the Internet, have provided the needed tools to make this transition a reality, thus making it possible for designers to simultaneously work on geometric models from one or more networked computers regardless of the location of the user. This new paradigm is expected to improve collaboration and greatly reduce product design times and consequently reduce cost and improve productivity. The multi-user architecture will, however, also require reliable security mechanisms to ensure its successful deployment in an enterprise environment where protection of intellectual property is of critical importance. This thesis proposes a framework to implement authentication, authorization and secure data communications in a multiuser collaborative CAD software system. This framework has been tested on an emerging multiuser collaborative CAD system called v-CAx being developed at Brigham Young University.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is a worldwide growing technology, however it is not yet completely accepted. Of all of the business processes in an organization, marketing is perhaps one of the natural fitting-processes to apply GIS. Even though there is recent research regarding applications of GIS in the wood products industry, those applications are mostly related to biomass mapping and logistics issues. Little research has been conducted on the utilization of GIS as part of the marketing strategic plan in this industry. Thus, the main goal of this project is to understand GIS uses on marketing application in the wood products industry, specifically in the marketing mix strategic plan.
The approach of this project consisted of the collection and analysis of data from secondary wood products industries in the state of Virginia. In addition, a case of study on current users of GIS applications was conducted. Once the data from the survey and the case study were collected, validated, and analyzed; applications and guidelines for the use of GIS in marketing activities were developed. The first application was the creation of a relational database to organize the information and to create an industry directory for secondary wood products industries. Secondly, clustering techniques were used to test if wood products companies cluster around certain geographical regions. Confirmation of the clustering led to the construction of an online map. Finally, guidelines were developed to describe how to use GIS in the marketing process of wood products firms.
By increasing the knowledge and developing guidelines on GIS uses on marketing mix applications this study will help the wood products industry, other practitioners and the academic community, by providing insight of the industry, possible uses to simplify the strategic process and gain understanding of the environment among other. / Master of Science

HyFlow: A High Performance Distributed Software Transactional Memory FrameworkSaad Ibrahim, Mohamed Mohamed 14 June 2011 (has links)
We present HyFlow - a distributed software transactional memory (D-STM) framework for distributed concurrency control. Lock-based concurrency control suffers from drawbacks including deadlocks, livelocks, and scalability and composability challenges. These problems are exacerbated in distributed systems due to their distributed versions which are more complex to cope with (e.g., distributed deadlocks). STM and D-STM are promising alternatives to lock-based and distributed lock-based concurrency control for centralized and distributed systems, respectively, that overcome these difficulties. HyFlow is a Java framework for DSTM, with pluggable support for directory lookup protocols, transactional synchronization and recovery mechanisms, contention management policies, cache coherence protocols, and network communication protocols. HyFlow exports a simple distributed programming model that excludes locks: using (Java 5) annotations, atomic sections are defiend as transactions, in which reads and writes to shared, local and remote objects appear to take effect instantaneously. No changes are needed to the underlying virtual machine or compiler. We describe HyFlow's architecture and implementation, and report on experimental studies comparing HyFlow against competing models including Java remote method invocation (RMI) with mutual exclusion and read/write locks, distributed shared memory (DSM), and directory-based D-STM. / Master of Science

Com o objetivo de contribuir para a discussão sobre formação contínua de educadores, este estudo analisa as ações de formação empreendidas por uma diretoria de ensino, órgão da estrutura administrativa da Secretaria de Estado de Educação de São Paulo, na implementação do projeto Ensinar e Aprender: Corrigindo o Fluxo do Ciclo II, no período de 2000 a 2003. Para tanto, investiga o papel desempenhado por este órgão na formação contínua de educadores e recorre a um breve retrospecto da história dos órgãos mediadores entre o governo e a escola e da constituição da identidade de seus trabalhadores, na busca dos alicerces de concepções que sobrevivem na atualidade. Os dados empíricos foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, intentando captar as perspectivas de sujeitos envolvidos na ação, formadores e formandos, acerca da formação contínua de professores e da atuação, em sua dimensão formadora, da diretoria de ensino. Contrastando as construções individuais, incluindo as da autora, à luz de conceitos sobre formação contínua, desenvolvimento institucional da escola e supervisão escolar, objetiva-se desvelar crenças subjacentes à ação em estudo e apontar dificuldades e possibilidades das diretorias de ensino na viabilização de ações de formação contínua de educadores. Trata-se de uma pesquisa ancorada numa perspectiva qualitativa, que teve como critério para escolha da diretoria de ensino e da escola pesquisadas, suas participações efetivas na implementação do referido projeto, entrevistando-se todos os envolvidos na ação, que ainda encontravam-se em exercício nestes dois órgãos. O estudo evidencia a falta de investimento na estrutura da Secretaria de Estado da Educação, enquanto espaço de formação de professores e aponta permanências de acepções acerca da função executora tanto da diretoria de ensino como da escola, respaldadas na crença de bons modelos de ser professor, prescritos por pessoas ou instituições consideradas detentoras de um saber que as legitima para tal. Constatam-se mudanças na prática docente atribuídas, pelos sujeitos da pesquisa, à participação na ação de formação contínua, mas não se apresentam indícios de sua contribuição para a transformação da escola. Propõe-se, dentro da interinidade das verdades, que as ações de formação da diretoria de ensino direcionem-se para a construção da autonomia da escola e do professor, a partir da priorização da determinação partilhada de suas necessidades, requerendo-se, a vista das evidências apontadas, investimentos no desenvolvimento profissional dos trabalhadores das diretorias de ensino. / Having the aim to make contributions for the discussion about educators continuous development, this research analyses the developmental actions done by a Teaching Directory Body an administrative office belonging to the Education State Board of São Paulo, during the implementation of the Teaching and Learning Project: Redirecting the flow of II Cycle, from 2000 to 2003. In order to fulfill this aim, it investigates the role performed by the Body in educators continuous development actions and resorts to a brief historical retrospective about the mediating offices between the state government and school and to the identity construction of the school workers, in search for the foundation of concepts which are still present nowadays. The empirical data were collected in semi-structured interviews, with the objective of capturing the perspectives of the subjects involved in the action trainers and trainees, about the educators continuous development and about the performance in its developmental aspect, of the Teaching Directory Body. Contrasting the individual constructions, including those of the author, in the light of concepts about continuous development, school institutional development and school supervision, the aim is to unclose beliefs underpinning the action studied and to point at difficulties and possibilities of Teaching Directory Bodies in the implementation process of educators continuous development actions. It is a qualitative research, which had as a criteria for choosing both Teaching Directory Bodies and the school itself, their participation in the implementation of the studied project which was assessed by interviewing all the people involved in the action who were still at work in both institutions. The study shows the lack of investment in the Education State Board structure, both as a developmental locus for teachers and it points at permanent concepts of the working role of both the Teaching Directory Body as well as the school, supported by the belief on right models of what to be a good teacher is, prescribed by people or institutions which have legitimized knowledge. We observe changes in the teaching practice, laid by the research subjects, to the participation in the continuous development action, but we didnt observe any evidence of their contribution to the school transformation. The proposal, regarded provisional truths, is that the developmental actions of the Teaching Directory Body direct themselves towards the construction of school and teacher autonomy, from the process of establishing a priority related to a shared determination of their needs. In order to do this, it is required- based on the observed evidences, investments in the professional development of workers at the Teaching Directory Bodies.

Este trabalho tem por objeto de estudo o Directorio que se deve observar nas Po-voaçoens dos Índios do Pará, e Maranhão em quanto Sua Magestade não mandar o contrário - legisla-ção implementada no Estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão, entre os anos de 1758 e 1798. Ela-borada em meio às intervenções do ministério de Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo para a região, essa lei tem sido vista pela historiografia como uma lei pombalina. A análise bus-cou acompanhar os processos de formulação da lei. Assim, a tese propõe uma compreen-são distinta da comumente aceita: o Diretório dos Índios (como a lei ficou conhecida) sur-giu como um desdobramento dos conflitos havidos entre a Metrópole portuguesa e sua Colônia americana. Logo, não se trata de uma lei pombalina, mas de uma resposta do mi-nistério de Carvalho e Mello ao conflito que se lhe apresentou a qual incorpora demandas coloniais e metropolitanas. Por outro lado, a tese buscou compreender o exercício da lei e, nesse sentido, tratou de evitar concebê-lo como o desdobramento lógico do que dispunham os seus dispositivos legais. Antes, tratou de entendê-lo como relacionado ao contexto que o fez emergir. Dessa forma, a tese busca evidenciar que os conflitos que provocaram a lei foram determinantes para a conformação da sua aplicação e trata de analisar, então, a atua-ção dos agentes históricos envolvidos, ao longo do período de sua vigência: as populações indígenas, os colonos, os missionários e os agentes da administração metropolitana. / This works subject matter is the Directorio que se deve observar nas Povoaçoens dos Índios do Pará, e Maranhão em quanto Sua Magestade não mandar o contrário - legislation im-plemented in the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão during forty years, since 1758 until 1798. That legislation was elaborated at the same time of some others, implemented by Minister Sebastião Jose de Carvalho e Mello, as part of a political plan to improve relations between the Colony and its Metropolis. As a consequence of that, history has signed the legislation as a Marquis of Pombals law. The analysis realized in this work searched to follow the making process of the law. Thus, the thesis considers a distinct understanding in relation to the idea accepted by history: the Directory of the Indians (as the law became known) appeared as a result of the conflicts which occurred between the Portuguese Me-tropolis and its American Colony, and incorporates colonial and metropolitan demands. On the other hand, the thesis searched to understand the law practices as related to the context that made it to emerge, to make evident that the conflicts that had provoked the law had been determinative for the conformation of its application the thesis analyzes the perform-ance of the historical agents involved: the Indian populations, colonists, the missionaries and the agents of the metropolitan administration.

Previous issue date: 2015-05-08 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / A research on the issue of guardianship and freedom of the Indians in the second half of the century XVIII. The new regime intended to make the Indian chiefs allies of the Portuguese monarchy, incorporating them into the system. But this was not possible, alliances were only circumstantial. The villages turned into towns and places are "contact zones" where cultural exchanges and processes of ethnic and cultural mix occur. The Indian chiefs were subject living between two different worlds, they were the threshold of the frontier between these worlds, the filter through which the ideas of the Western Christian world passed. With the implementation of the Directory and the new laws of freedom of the Indians, the Indian chiefs felt threatened in their power by the presence the directors. According to the project Mendonça Furtado towns and places become spaces of confinement, where there should be strict control of manpower and production. However, this system eventually become fragile allowing great mobility for the Indians who constantly moved to work in the king's works, such as the construction of fortresses or expeditions in delimiting boundaries. In the Inspections made in the villages and places there were many Indians absent for reasons of escape and / or desertion, or by being in the service of the crown and often not reached the number of persons determined by the Directory to the villages that were 150 "souls". The same proportion as the slave raids intensified, also intensified the trails and formation of mocabos. Although the directory has not served its purpose expiring in Kingdom of Queen Mary I, its model has influenced Indian policy until the early twentieth century, in the Amazon and in Brazil as a whole / Uma pesquisa sobre a questão da tutela e da liberdade dos índios na segunda metade do séc. De acordo com o projeto de Mendonça Furtado as vilas e lugares se tornariam espaços de confinamento, onde deveria haver um controle rígido da mão-de-obra e produção. Porém, este sistema acabou por se tornar frágil, possibilitando uma grande mobilidade para os índios que constantemente se deslocavam para trabalhar nas obras do rei, como por exemplo, na construção de fortalezas ou nas expedições demarcadoras de limites. Nas correições feitas às vilas e lugares havia grande quantidade de índios ausentes por motivos de fuga e/ou deserção, ou por estarem a serviço da coroa e muitas vezes não se atigia o número de pessoas determinado pelo Diretório para as vilas que era de 150 almas . Na mesma proporção que se intensificavam os descimentos, também se intensificavam as fugas e formações de mocabos. Embora o Diretório não tenha cumprido os seus propósitos extinguindo-se no Reinado de D. Maria I, o seu modelo influenciou a política indigenista até o início do século XX, na Amazônia e no Brasil como um todo
