Moral Hazard and Adverse Selection of Executive CompensationXian, Chunwei January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the structure of incentive contracts in which adverse selection problems are more severe. Specifically, I examine the moderating effect of R&D intensity on the relative weights placed on signals of ability and on performance measures in executive compensation. Furthermore, I also investigate the determinants on the compensation of university presidents. I find that that more weight is placed on signals of ability in R&D intensive firms and less weight is placed on performance measures. I find that R&D intensive firms pay more to executives with technical work experience and/or relevant educational degrees. Additionally, in the context of university presidents, the positive association between organizational complexity and executive compensation is driven by the role of managerial ability rather than by effort. This result also suggests that considering measures of organizational complexity (such as firm size and diversification) as control variables in empirical studies of executive compensation is the appropriate means by which to account for the impact of organizational complexity. / Business Administration/Accounting

ANÁLISIS DE LA INNOVACIÓN EN PROCESO Y ESTUDIO DE LOS NON-R&D INNOVATORS. EVIDENCIA EMPÍRICA PARA ESPAÑABoronat Moll, Carles 06 February 2013 (has links)
Boronat Moll, C. Knowledge for a warmer world: A patent analysis of climate change adaptation technologiesHötte, K., Jee, Su J. 08 August 2022 (has links)
Yes / Technologies can help strengthen the resilience of our economy against existential climate-risks. We investigate
climate change adaptation technologies (CCATs) in US patents to understand (1) historical patterns and possible
drivers of innovation; (2) scientific and technological requirements to develop and use CCATs; and (3) CCATs’
potential technological synergies with mitigation. First, in contrast to mitigation, innovation in CCATs only
slowly takes off, indicating a relatively low awareness of investors for solutions to cope with climate risks.
We discuss how historical trends in environmental regulation, energy prices, and public support may have
contributed to patenting in CCATs. Second, CCATs form two main clusters: science-intensive ones in agriculture,
health, and monitoring technologies; and engineering-intensive ones in coastal, water, and infrastructure
technologies. Analyses of technology-specific scientific and technological knowledge bases inform directions
for how to facilitate advancement, transfer and use of CCATs. Lastly, CCATs show strong technological
complementarities with mitigation as more than 25% of CCATs bear mitigation benefits. While not judging
about the complementarity of mitigation and adaptation in general, our results suggest how policymakers can
harness these technological synergies to achieve both goals simultaneously.

地區創新氛圍對廠商創新活動與成效之研究 / The study of regional innovative milieu on firm innovation activities and success郭慧蘭, Kuo,Hui Lan Unknown Date (has links)
Under the wind of the knowledge-based economics and globalization, innovation is an important way for firms to increase their own competitiveness. Innovation is the process from original concept to business. The past researches on firm innovation branch widely, most focus on economic geography and corporation management. From those related researches, we can simplify the elements which can influence the innovation of the firm into three: firms’ inner attributes, relation of the connection to outside network, and the environment of the area which firms located. Innovation milieu is the social relationship which actors in the area could make it happen through interactions and group learning, which can advance the area’s innovation ability, and give the good environment condition for firms to innovate. Innovative milieu is the important issue in the present regional development researches, this research will integrate the three elements to discuss the influence on firms innovation activities and innovation success.
The theory of the innovative milieu have transformed from discussion of “the localization of something” to focus on the relation of the work of the regional production system and the local innovative milieu. But, the lack of the quantification indicator, and the territory of the research field still need to break through, and is the focus of this research. This research divide Taiwan into 46 analysis area unit, then bring into the concept of the local production system, use two indicators to choose 26 elements as the scope of the research, and farther define 26 analysis area unit into 9 technology industry cluster area, and 17 traditional industry cluster area, to compare the differences of the industry field and the level of the development of the innovation milieu. This research take 8 innovative milieu related indexes, and compress into 2 indexes: “innovation synergy” and “innovation success” through the content analysis; this research use these two indexes to divide 46 areas of Taiwan into 4 types of innovation milieu: innovative milieu, no innovative milieu, innovation but without milieu, and milieu but without innovation.
On the analysis of the firms’ innovation activities and the success, this research take two steps to discuss. At the first step, this research use the dummy variables of the different industry cluster area as the concept of the regional innovative milieu, to check the influence it could make on the firms innovation activities and the success; At the second step, this research use regional innovative milieu indexes to check the firms’ innovation success of the traditional and technology industry cluster area. The whole research shows that the firms of technology industry aggregation area are tend to invest on their own R&D, which the firms of traditional industry aggregation area often do their R&D by cooperating with others, and the innovation outcome of firms of the technology industry aggregation area is better. The regional innovative milieu has the conspicuous influence on the firms innovation activities and the success, especially to the technology industry cluster area, but the influence which the R&D cooperation could make on the innovation outcome is not good as expect. Thus, the making of the basic environment of the industry development, the aggregation of the knowledge facilities, and the build of the local network is the good impact for local firms to innovate, especially for the traditional industry aggregation area ones. At the same time, to reinforce the firms’ inner constitution is also the key to promote the firms innovation.

Investissements industriels, concurrence et diversification de l'offre alimentaire / Industrial investment, competition and diversification of food supplyNguyen, Huong Hue 22 September 2011 (has links)
Our research aims at analyzing the economic feasibility of approaches for product diversification and quality characteristics improvement by firms, in a context where these modifications are subject to technical constraints that induce high costs not necessarily valued by the market. In this context, we try to understand how it is possible for public authorities to intervene in order to encourage firms to make sufficient efforts (in terms of upstream investment) and facilitate the marketing of products in response to the needs of society. We apply these research perspectives to two important issues, namely the GM/non-GM coexistence and the health and nutrition issue through the development of product lines which are more acceptable from a nutritional point of view (for example, less sugar, fat, salt…). These two research issues are developed by mobilizing the tools of the Theory of Industrial Organization. The results show that the spontaneous choice of product lines by firms is not always socially satisfactory, which implies that in certain conditions, public intervention is desirable. In the case of GM/non-GM coexistence, non-GM products may not have the desired characteristics in the absence of regulation. In terms of health issues, companies in the market do not offer high nutritional value foods in the absence of public intervention. Overall, this thesis concludes that it is often necessary to combine several public instruments. In the first study, we show that the public authorities can effectively manage the GM/non-GM coexistence by acting simultaneously through the labelling threshold definition, the quality tests and controls, and the level of the penalty cost in case of non compliance. In the second study, we show that an intervention through Research and Development (R&D) subsidies has some weaknesses such as the risk of manipulation of the grant by firms, or the possibility of triggering distortions to the detriment of public health. This suggests combining the R&D subsidies with another instrument such as taxation

Firm performance, sources and drivers of innovation and sectoral technological trajectories : an empirical study using recent french CIS / Performance économique, sources et leviers de l'innovation et filières technologiques : une étude économétrique à partir de données CIS françaisesHaned, Naciba 10 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis is structured in three essays based on evolutionary theoretical grounds and provides empirical evidence from CIS. It aims at showing that the sources of innovation and the appropriation of innovation rents vary in function of firms’ activities and innovation strategies. In essay 1, we describe four waves of CIS, covering the period 1994-2006 and we study persistent innovation behavior with a discrete choice model on a data set of 431 firms. We find that innovation persistence is more important for product innovators because they need novel products to be more competitive and therefore enrich their base of knowledge continuously. By contrast, process innovators are less persistent because innovation strategy is less “market” oriented and intends to meet quality or production adjustments. The two last essays explore with the two stage least squares method how firms benefit economically from their innovations on a sample of 7 742 firms, on the period 2002-2005. We show that science-based firms rely more on R&D investments to develop their products and maintain their leads by acquiring complementary assets, i.e. they use mixed methods to appropriate the rents of innovation (the combined use IPRs and strategic methods for instance secrecy). By contrast, firms in other categories (for instance firms using cost-cutting strategies) draw more on external sources of knowledge coming either from suppliers or advanced users. Additionally, these firms use more extensively trademarks or non technological methods of appropriation (as marketing devices), because they are less exposed to potential imitation and because they are price sensitive.

Incentivos fiscais e dispêndios com P&D&I: uma avaliação da aplicação da Lei do Bem / Tax incentives and RD & I expenditures: an evaluation of the Lei do Bem applicationSouza, Gedir Silva de 31 March 2017 (has links)
The consensus among international cooperation agencies for trade and economic development lies in recognizing in the ability to innovate the main source for promoting productivity in organizations. The Brazilian effort of construction and development of a national innovation system constituted the creation of tax incentive programs as a way to advance investments in Research, Development & Innovation - R&D&I, causing the private sector to participate more intensely financing process of technological development. A decade after the implementation of major tax incentive program for innovation in Brazil (Law nº. 11.196/05), it is necessary to verify that such incentives were able to achieve their goals. The present thesis aims at evaluating: (i) the impact on R&D&I expenditures of the option to use the tax incentives granted by the \"Lei do Bem\" and (ii) how much of tax waiver, that is to say, of the credits received by companies participating in this program, has returned in terms of R&D&I investments over time. The methodology to be used proposes the estimation of an empirical model for R&D&I expenditure, which are explained either by the company\'s option to use tax incentives of the \"Lei do Bem\" or by tax credits obtained due to the use of tax incentives program, in addition to a set of control variables associated with financing constraints. The statistical tests were conducted to the group of publicly traded companies listed on the BM & FBOVESPA in 2013, for their performances in the period 2008 to 2013. The results for the dynamic panel data were obtained from the GMM-System model and indicate that the decision to use the \"Lei do Bem\" tax incentives is associated with an increase in R&D&I expenditures over time. So that for each percentage point of increase in the propensity of companies to opt for the use of the \"Lei do Bem\", 0.65 to 0.85 percentage points of increase in R&D&I expenditures is expected. On the other hand, the increase of one percentage point in the tax waiver generates an expectation of increase in the R&D&I expenses of the companies, which can vary from 0.26 to 0.40 percentage points, over time

Promoção do acesso e inovação em saúde: alternativas ao modelo baseado na proteção à proriedade intelectual em discussão na Organização Mundial de Saúde / Promoting access and innovation in health: alternatives to the model based on intellectual property protection within the World Health OrganizationVieira, Marcela Cristina Fogaça 23 February 2015 (has links)
The model for promoting innovation in health prevalent nowadays is based on the protection of intellectual property by granting patents. The patent allows the holder to exploit the protected object with exclusivity for a certain period of time, in which he could obtain the return of investment made in research and development. The need to obtain the return of the investments made on R&D by selling the final product, boosted by the monopoly conferred by the patent, allows the patent holder to establish high price. The patent system maximizes profits of pharmaceutical companies, expanding its interest in developing profitable products and in health commodification. We identified and systematized evidence to show that the application of the patent system in the health sector has generated innovation problems, by directing R&D resources to the production of profitable products and not driven by health needs; and access, since the high price excludes millions of product consumption. It was demonstrated the need for seeking measures to overcome these problems. We identified existing measures within the patent system that could be used to alleviate the problems identified in the short and medium term, with a case-by-case approach. We chose to use a systemic approach, demonstrating the need for alternative measures to the patent system to resolve the problems identified in the long-term. The identification of alternative measures was conducted through review of more than a hundred proposals submitted in open call and recommendations made by different bodies of the World Health Organization from 2003 to 2012. The measures identified have been described, systematized and analyzed. It is concluded that the main proposal currently under discussion is the creation of a Global R&D Fund, as part of a Global R&D Convention on health, which would finance R&D by granting prizes, and not patents. The results of R&D would be treated as public goods, and could be produced by any interested party. This model aims to delink the costs of R&D from the final price of the product. Thus, it has the potential to solve the problems of innovation and access to health identified in the patent system. However, it faces strong opposition from advocates of the patent system, especially large pharmaceutical companies interested in expanding health commodification.

Previous issue date: 2015-03-04 / National innovative capacity (NIC) is the ability of a country to create and trade a flow of technological innovation for a long period of time given the strength of the internal infrastructure of innovation, the environment for innovation in key industrial clusters and the interaction between these two areas. The objective of this dissertation is to validate conclusions about convergence obtained by Stern, Porter and Furman (2000), taking into account the changes occurred in the last 20 years. In order to reach our goal, based on the NIC theory, we developed an empiric exploration of the R&D productivity determinants and international patents production and a group of observables characteristics associated to NIC. The results we found direct us to conclude that a convergence process has intensified in the last 20 years, however there are relevant differences in the growth patent production between developed and emerging countries / Capacidade nacional de inovação (CNI) é a habilidade de um país de produzir e comercializar um fluxo de inovação tecnológica por um longo período dado a força da infraestrutura de inovação interna, o ambiente para inovação nos principais clusters industriais e a interligação entre essas duas áreas.
