Capacity Building for Energy Performance Contracting in European Union

Basar, Ezgi January 2013 (has links)
Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) is an important tool to disseminate energy efficiency measures. This study focuses on the main barriers and success factors for EPC market in order to build capacity in this subject. A pilot study of questionnaire took part among the local authorities of four countries within the European Union; Croatia, Denmark, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The results of this pilot study were combined with the results of a literature research to identify common disadvantages and key points of the market. Afterwards, the most important actions to be taken on national and international level in European Union were discussed. According to this study, the supportive legal framework for the energy efficiency measures, access to financial resources, reliable energy consumption data and trust in Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) were remarked as the essential factors for increasing the capacity of the EPC. / Intelligent Energy Europe, ManagEnergy

Hardware Emulation of a Secure Passive Rfid Sensor System

Todd, Michael Gordon 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Passively powered radio frequency (RFID) tags are a class of devices powered via harvested ultra high frequency (UHF) radiation emitted by a reader device. Currently, these devices are relegated to little more than a form of wireless barcode, but could be used in a myriad of applications from simple product identification to more complex applications such as environmental sensing. Because these devices are intended for large scale deployment and due to the limited power that can be harvested from RF energy, hardware and cost constraints are extremely tight. The Electronic Product Code (EPC) Global Class 1 Generation 2 (Gen2) specification [EPC08] is currently the de facto communication standard for passively powered RFID. One issue restricting deployment and a cause for some privacy concerns is a lack of security in the Gen2 protocol. We will demonstrate a potential solution to this problem by using a novel block cipher designed for low power and area constrained devices to encrypt and transmit sensor data. This will be done while maintaining backward compatibility with the original standard and will require no substantial changes to the reader. Our solution will also provide one way authentication, data integrity checking and will provide security against replay attacks. In this thesis we will demonstrate an FPGA emulation of a Gen2 compatible RFID tag which will serve as a test bed for several novel features. We will leverage prior work involving several aspects of a tag [QL09] [PP07] as well as incorporate a novel low power encryption cipher [AB07] and external temperature sensor. Demonstrated in [CT08], FPGA emulation will allow for the independent verification of several components. This thesis will provide insight into the future of RFID and will provide insight into tag design as well as possible future updates to the Gen2 standard.

A Quantitative Study- The Capitalization of Energy Efficiency on Housing Prices / En kvantitativ studie av energieffektivitets påverkan på fastighetsvärde i Stockholm, Sverige

Jto, Ahmed, Lehmann, Sarah Johanna January 2022 (has links)
Various studies in the EU have examined the effect of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) on the real estate market, examining market values, rental values, and yields. However, there is dissent on the effect of EPC. The study tests for the impact of EPC alone and in relation to socioeconomic attributes on transaction prices of residential properties in Stockholm, Sweden. The thesis analyzes real transaction data of the 26 municipalities of the Stockholm region. Firstly, the research aims to determine if the energy efficiency capitalizes on residential property prices and if and to what extent the capitalization varies within the municipalities of Stockholm. Lastly, the study examines how income and education influence the prices of energy-efficient properties. The applied approaches follow the hedonic pricing method, namely, the OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) and spatial models. After analyzing more than 40,000 observations, the regression results indicate that high energy efficiency is reflected in the price premium of apartments and dwellings. For example, energy-efficient apartments with an EPC grade of A, B, or C achieve a price premium of around 0.99% compared to apartments with lower EPC grades between D-G. The results indicate a more considerable price premium of approximately 3.33% for energy-efficient dwellings. Another result of the study is that the capitalization of energy efficiency varies strongly between the municipalities of Stockholm. For apartments, the data implies substantial differences ranging from -15% in Danderyd to +14.2% in Upplands-Bro. The “local” premium for energy-efficiency dwellings ranges from 3% in Stockholm municipality to 9.5% in Norrtälje. Even though the results were significant, they need to be interpreted with caution as the sample size of some municipalities was relatively small. The last aspect of the study incorporates the issue of socioeconomic variables, income, and education level. The initial hypothesis was that high income and education would be correlated with higher energy performance certificate (EPC) grades. However, the results suggest a negative correlation between income or education level with EPC grade. These results imply that market participants with higher income and education are less likely to seek a higher EPC grade. The reason could be that these high-income households have a lower sensitivity to rising energy prices and fewer issues to afford the old but prestigious housing stock.

Detection of Denial of Service Attacks on the Open Radio Access Network Intelligent Controller through the E2 Interface

Radhakrishnan, Vikas Krishnan 03 July 2023 (has links)
Open Radio Access Networks (Open RANs) enable flexible cellular network deployments by adopting open-source software and white-box hardware to build reference architectures customizable to innovative target use cases. The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance defines specifications introducing new Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC) functions that leverage open interfaces between disaggregated RAN elements to provide precise RAN control and monitoring capabilities using applications called xApps and rApps. Multiple xApps targeting novel use cases have been developed by the O-RAN Software Community (OSC) and incubated on the Near-Real-Time RIC (Near-RT RIC) platform. However, the Near-RT RIC has, so far, been demonstrated to support only a single xApp capable of controlling the RAN elements. This work studies the scalability of the OSC Near-RT RIC to support simultaneous control signaling by multiple xApps targeting the RAN element. We particularly analyze its internal message routing mechanism and experimentally expose the design limitations of the OSC Near-RT RIC in supporting simultaneous xApp control. To this end, we extend an existing open-source RAN slicing xApp and prototype a slice-aware User Equipment (UE) admission control xApp implementing the RAN Control E2 Service Model (E2SM) to demonstrate a multi-xApp control signaling use case and assess the control routing capability of the Near-RT RIC through an end-to-end O-RAN experiment using the OSC Near-RT RIC platform and an open-source Software Defined Radio (SDR) stack. We also propose and implement a tag-based message routing strategy for disambiguating multiple xApps to enable simultaneous xApp control. Our experimental results prove that our routing strategy ensures 100% delivery of control messages between multiple xApps and E2 Nodes while guaranteeing control scalability and xApp non-repudiation. Using the improved Near-RT RIC platform, we assess the security posture and resiliency of the OSC Near-RT RIC in the event of volumetric application layer Denial of Service (DoS) attacks exploiting the E2 interface and the E2 Application Protocol (E2AP). We design a DoS attack agent capable of orchestrating a signaling storm attack and a high-intensity resource exhaustion DoS attack on the Near-RT RIC platform components. Additionally, we develop a latency monitoring xApp solution to detect application layer signaling storm attacks. The experimental results indicate that signaling storm attacks targeting the E2 Terminator on the Near-RT RIC cause control loop violations over the E2 interface affecting service delivery and optimization for benign E2 Nodes. We also observe that a high-intensity E2 Setup DoS attack results in unbridled memory resource consumption leading to service interruption and application crash. Our results also show that the E2 interface at the Near-RT RIC is vulnerable to volumetric application layer DoS attacks, and robust monitoring, load-balancing, and DoS mitigation strategies must be incorporated to guarantee resiliency and high reliability of the Near-RT RIC. / Master of Science / Telecommunication networks need sophisticated controllers to support novel use cases and applications. Cellular base stations can be managed and optimized for better user experience through an intelligent radio controller called the Near-Real-Time Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC) (Near-RT RIC), defined by the Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance. This controller supports simultaneous connections to multiple base stations through the E2 interface and allows simple radio applications called xApps to control the behavior of those base stations. In this research work, we study the performance and behavior of the Near-RT RIC when a malicious or compromised base station tries to overwhelm the controller through a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. We develop a solution to determine the application layer communication delay between the controller and the base station to detect potential attacks trying to compromise the functionality and availability of the controller. To implement this solution, we also upgrade the controller to support multiple radio applications to interact and control one or more base stations simultaneously. Through the developed solution, we prove that the O-RAN Software Community (OSC) Near-RT RIC is highly vulnerable to DoS attacks from malicious base stations targeting the controller over the E2 interface.
