Design and Verification of An Energy-Efficient Edge-Pursuit Comparator / Design och verifiering av en energieffektiv Edge-Pursuit-jämförare

Xie, Haiqin January 2022 (has links)
With the rapid development of mobile communication, sensors, and biomedical in recent years, the demand for accurate data information, highquality audio and image has become much more significant, which requires a high-precision Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) to process weak analog signals. As one of the core modules of ADC, the comparator’s precision, speed, stability, and noise play a key role in the performance of the whole circuit. Over the years, those performance has been improved a lot by both designing new architectures and using advanced fabrication technology. However, the conventional comparators occupy 50%-60% of the total energy consumption of EPC, even with advanced technology and lower supply voltage. In this thesis, a new type of energy-efficient comparator, called Edge-Pursuit Comparator (EPC), is proposed, which satisfies the need for low comparison energy. The design of EPC is based on a ring oscillator, when the EPC enters the evaluation mode, two signal edges with different propagation delays will chase in it until one overlaps the other, and finally generate a stable voltage level in each output node. The circuit is built and simulated in Cadence Virtuoso using cmos22fdsoi technology. The simulation results reveal that the energy consumed per comparison is dependent on the input differential voltage, and it can be as low as 7 fJ when vin = 50 mV, which is around ten times smaller compared with conventional comparators. In addition, as the power consumption is considerable when the two input voltages are very close, a promising improvement is applied to EPC, namely connecting every node with a variable capacitor, which is called Edge-Pursuit Comparator enhanced with Capacitor (EPCC). Cadence simulation results prove that EPCC can largely lower the energy consumption under a small vin while keeping input-referred noise the same. Therefore, a combination of EPC and EPCC is expected to have prospective applications in the energy-efficient area.

Jurisdiction and applicable law on European patent disputes

藍彗甄, Lan, Hui Chen Unknown Date (has links)
European Patents are granted through the European Patent Office. Although such right is unitary, the European patents will break down into a bundle of national patents; each governed by the domestic law of the States which the holder of the right has designated. Since infringement stands in the crossroads between patent enforcement and patent validity, infringement litigation generally touches on the issue of validity as it is impossible to infringe a right that does not exist or no longer exists. The nullity component in infringement litigation gives rise to additional difficulties with respect to the selection of the forum and the applicable law. As a result, the validity challenge is discussed in detail with respect to the application of the relevant rules on international jurisdiction and with respect to the identification of the relevant applicable laws. Cross border litigation in relation to registered intellectual property rights in Europe has been extremely controversial over the years. The jurisdiction of the courts to deal with foreign intellectual property rights is after all not entirely obvious or straightforward in the light of the exclusive jurisdiction provision in the Brussels system. The judgment which the Court of Justice delivered on 13th July 2006 in case Roche and GAT result substantial conflicts. Divergent views had been expressed concerning cross border jurisdiction over intellectual property cases on Article 6(1) of the Brussels I Regulation; and Article 16(4) of the Brussels Convention 1968, what is now Article 22(4) of the Brussels I Regulation. This thesis focuses on the jurisdiction and applicable law on European patent disputes.

SOFTWARE PATENTS : A study on the patentability of software inventions

Achieng, Spance Joy January 2017 (has links)
The primary objective of the thesis will be to focus on patent protection of software under the European Patent Convention, by analyzing the different approaches that the European Patent Office has taken into consideration since the mid-1980s. These approaches are derived from the different decisions that emanate from the Technical Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office. The thesis will examine the most relevant decisions illustrating the juridical tendencies and basis that have been utilized to decide over the patentability of computer programs. The analysis will conclude with the latest approach taken by the Technical Board of the European Patent Office. The study will examine the patentability requirements of inventions in general established within the European Patent Convention. Sources that will be utilized to carry out this research will include case law, legislation, specialized legal commentary; journals and books. The present study sustains that computer programs may be patented as long as they comply with all the general requirements of an invention prescribed under the European Patent Convention together with the condition established by case law called the technical character requirement. Nevertheless, due to the fact that the Technical Boards of Appeal are not bound by previous case law, the current position could keep evolving as it relies on the stance of  the European Patent Office on patentability of computer programs which is seems to be influenced by the changes in the technological world

Srovnání standardů pro procesní modelování / Comparison of standards for process modeling

Kalina, Jaroslav January 2008 (has links)
The scope of this thesis is the field of business process modeling and additionally the usability of business process models in areas like conceptual analysis of IS/ICT, business process reengineering and business process management. For the purpose of evaluation of the usability of current standards for business process modeling, an framework for comparison of various characteristics of these standards is proposed. This thesis has two aims. Primarily, to develop an approach for evaluation of business process modeling standards, and as a secondary aim, to apply this evaluation model onto a set of selected standards for business process modeling and thus perform a comparison of these standards. The evaluation model has two main components. The first part is to create a set of characteristics which represent two existing points of view onto the exploitability business process modeling (e.g. during the development of IS/ICT and during BPR/BPM1). During the identification of particular characteristics, a research into the related literature and other sources has been performed to provide a sufficient basis for this activity. The second part of the developed approach is to the application of PEMM (Process & Enterprise Maturity Model), which was developed by Dr. M. Hammer for the purpose os auditing the maturity of business processes. Both of these parts are then put together into one evaluation framework. Based on information gathered from the respective specifications of particular standards, related literature and articles, we've performed an application of this evaluation framework on three standards for business process modeling: EPC, BPMN and IDEF3. The benefits of this thesis could be seen as a creation of a very own approach for evaluation of business process modeling standards. Additionally by performing the comparison of these three standards for business process modeling we've created a guideline which could be there fore applied by the potential reader during the decision making of what standard to use for business process modeling (in the context of expected purpose of this modeling).
