Contech: a shared memory parallel program analysis framework

Vassenkov, Phillip 13 January 2014 (has links)
We are in the era of multicore machines, where we must exploit thread level parallelism for programs to run better, smarter, faster, and more efficiently. In order to increase instruction level parallelism, processors and compilers perform heavy dataflow analyses between instructions. However, there isn’t much work done in the area of inter-thread dataflow analysis. In order to pave the way and find new ways to conserve resources across a variety of domains (i.e., execution speed, chip die area, power efficiency, and computational throughput), we propose a novel framework, termed Contech, to facilitate the analysis of multithreaded program in terms of its communication and execution patterns. We focus the scope on shared memory programs rather than message passing programs, since it is more difficult to analyze the communication and execution patterns for these programs. Discovering patterns of shared memory programs has the potential to allow general purpose computing machines to turn on or off architectural tricks according to application-specific features. Our design of Contech is modular in nature, so we can glean a large variety of information from an architecturally independent representation of the program under examination.

Diretrizes para o planejamento de experimentos em jogos educacionais voltados para o ensino de Engenharia de Software / Guidelines for the design of experiments in educational games geared toward the teaching of Software Engineering

Allan Ximenes Pereira 13 March 2014 (has links)
Educational games constitute an important teaching tool in the area of Software Engineering, where, often, students do not pass through any mechanism for hands-on training. A quality educational game must have well-defined educational goals, motivate students and make effective learning of the content. The application of games in teaching Software engineering must be carried out in a systematic and controlled on the basis of evaluation. The statistical technique of experimentation allows the measurement and analysis of the variables involved in the process of applying for these games can be applied with quality. To further define the experiments in the use of games for teaching Software Engineering, this paper proposes guidelines for the design of experiments in educational games, in order to verify the influence and significance of the use of these games in the teaching and learning of the concepts of Software engineering. An experiment with SimulES-W was conducted following these guidelines, which may be demonstrated its applicability and simplicity in its definition. The experience of use of the SimulES-W shows that learning with computer games is fun, interactive and that, despite the results obtained are not statistically significant, somehow contributes to the teaching of Software Engineering, not necessarily a prior knowledge of the content.

“Cara-de-Bronze” is one of João Guimarães Rosa’s most experimental narratives, for it presents a textual architecture built over several discursive layers that move implied and explicit cultural substrates related both to Western culture, as for example the medievalism and the literary tradition of medieval novels, and to Eastern-Asian culture, as the Indian Upanishads quoted as footnote. Its multi-facial characteristic is so intense that inserting this narrative into a defined genre (or narrative form) comes to a problem, because there are traces of the three great genres – Lyric, Epic, and Tragedy – in it, and, yet, inside each of them, other clues that reveal the perception of several forms, both from poetry, from folk songs or chanson de geste, and from the epopee, from the short-stories and from the novella; and, furthermore, from theater and cinema. This implosion of discursive boundaries shows the work of art’s dual essence, its foundation built upon two bases: one archaic and the other modern, noticeable in the literary tradition and in the formal experimentation. The aim is, therefore, to verify how the overlaying of cultural plans and of plot, as well as the transposition of genre and artistic codes, mobilize metalinguistically the inter- and intra-discursive layers and make Rosa’s work an aesthetical experiment whose objective is pointing out the artistic process itself and the poetical effect that follow as a result. With the general aim of investigating this narrative, the analysis here developed see as relevant the theories which are based on the critical current that regards the text as an object. From the concepts of formal experimentation, discussed by Antonio Manoel dos Santos Silva (2009), a path follows based on literary French semiotics, greimasian, rethought by Denis Bertrand (2003), on cultural semiotics, from Tartu’s school, edified... Modules for experimental lessons were proposed, based on the Science-Technology-Society (STS) teaching approach, and applied during one semester in a class of 30 undergraduate s (1st Semester 2011). The proposed didactic modules began with the presentation and discussion of documentaries with emphasis on controversial socioscientific issues, followed by an experiment of investigative character. All the conceptual topics included in these modules were originally part of the course syllabus, which were associated with the procedural and attitudinal contents emphasizing environmental and green chemistry education. The research corpus consisting of students textual production (response to questionnaires and reports) and transcript interviews (focal groups). The content analysis method was employed to describe and interpret the survey data. Also, the analysis of the experimental didactic modules using a holistic metric known as Green Star (GS) was carried out. Through the analysis of the results obtained by qualitative research in this case study, the didactic proposal enabled students to understand the contents in a complex context that included socioscientific issues, considering Green Chemistry as a mandatory demand for the initial teacher training.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the action of the lactic bacterias of two commercial marks of fermented milks, one cultivated with Lactobacillus paracasei (L1) and other with Lactobacillus casei (L2), on the weight gain and hematologic and histopathologic parameters of rats Wistar making the indomethacin use. The choice of the drug based on the hypothesis of the existence of the protection of the digestive system and of the histology of the organs of the animals against the possible aggression of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory for the concomitant administration of the fermented milks. Three lots of each fermented milk were used, taking place the count of the viability of the lactic bacterias, gram coloration, catalase and morphologic identification. Simultaneously, 60 rats Wistar males with 90 days, consuming commercial ration and water ad libitum, were divided in 6 groups of 10, being the group LP added of L1; LP + D of L1 + drug; C (control) of water; D, of drug; LC, of L2; and LC + D, of L2 + drug. The animals received the fermented milks (5mL/Kg/day) and/or the drug indomethacin (2mg/Kg/day) for gavage for 40 days, enrolling the weekly weights. After the sacrifice, blood samples were collected for the accomplishment of hemograms and it was verified the weight of the kidneys, spleens and livers, taking place the histopathology of these organs and of the stomachs and intestines. The obtained results were treated with ANOVA, Tukey, Friedman, Duncan, Kruskall-wallis and Wilcoxon (p<0,05), being used the statistical package R. The strains of L1 and L2 resulted in catalase negative, gram positive and morphology of bacilli, presenting final counts of bacteria with superior values to 106 UFC. The fermented milks added to the diets of LP and LC and the addition of the drug to D didn't influence in the weekly weight gain of the animals, but LP+D and LC+D statistically differed of C and D, suggesting there to be interaction among drug-food. In the difference among the initial and final weight of the animals, the groups that received fermented milk resembled each other to the control, except the group LP whose weight gain was inferior; D also presented deficit of weight gain in relation to the group C. The diets didn't influence in the weights of the kidneys of the experimental groups, LP just presented significant difference in terms of spleen weight in relation to the other groups and the weights of the livers of the groups LP, D and LC+D differed in relation to the control group, where D resulted in superior weight of C and LP and LC+D obtained inferior weights to the control group. In the blood parameters, the groups didn't differ to each other in the red and white series, nor in the differential leucocyte count, if not verifying immunostimulatory effects; already in the counts of the platelets, some groups presented statistical difference, however the obtained results were inside of the allowed. The histopathological analysis had not evidenced histology alterations in the stomachs, livers, kidneys and spleens, meeting discreet infiltrated of lymphoid cells in the own sheet of the intestine of the experimental groups.

Une expérimentation appliquée au cinéma (1915-1928) / André Antoine, director of the reality. An experimentation applied to Cinema (1915-1928)

Billaut, Manon 18 December 2017 (has links)
André Antoine’s place in theatre history is earned through his 1887 founding of the Théâtre-Libre and revolutionizing of modern mise en scène, but it is cinema that occupied the last part of his life as he made eight films between 1915 and 1922 for the Société cinématographique des auteurs et gens de lettres (“Film Society of Authors and Men of Letters”) and then for the Société d’éditions cinématographiques (“Society of Film Editions”), before devoting himself to theatre and film critic in several newspapers. These late years left few traces in film history, and both his films and his critical and theoretical writings remain largely unknown. Inspired by Emile Zola’s naturalist theories, Antoine took to the new art form a rigorous method based on the experience of environment. He clashed with avant-garde trends which were making their way to cinema in the early 1920s. This thesis highlights the experimental value of Antoine’s cinema, which gives a special role to research, observation and experience, by demonstrating the convergence of his special method with practices and discourse animating cinema at the turn of the World War I, a key moment of its legitimation as an art form. This study is based on in-depth analysis of Antoine’s films, his personal archives, production notes, as well as numerous texts he wrote on cinema between 1915 and 1928, the climactic year in the struggle for authorship recognition between Antoine and filmmakers of the First avant-garde.

Le cann, Sophie 05 December 2014 (has links)
The "gold standard" of surgical treatment of scoliosis is arthrodesis, which, with an appropriate instrumentation, corrects and straightens the deformities and fuses the vertebra of the pathologic segment to consolidate the correction. This fusion leads to the destruction of the physiological biomechanics of the spine, destroying growth and mobility. The work done in this thesis focuses on the development and validation of a new concept of spinal instrumentation which objectives are to reduce or even stop the development of spinal deformities, maintaining growth and mobility. This device is composed of materials used in new ways, leading to friction issues that do not exist in the current spinal systems. Thus, the system required a large biomechanical study, starting from the new concept of this implant, carrying on the development of an experimental methodology, designing and prototyping and then validation through numerical, mechanical, tribological and large animal in vivo studies. In vitro characterization of the device involves characterization of material through mechanical tests, and characterization of the tribological behavior of the system. In vivo characterization consists of two studies on large animal, the Landrace pig model : a first one on pedicle screws pullout, and a second one with 2 months of implantation, to validate the concept. The initial findings from this work are positive about the correct behavior of this system. Ongoing and future studies will complement those results, and validate the system as a whole, to allow future marketing.

Biomécanique de l'ancrage de vis pédiculaires pour l'instrumentation du rachis : une approche numérique et expérimentale / Biomechanical anchorage analysis of pedicle screws for spinal instrumentation

Bianco, Rohan-Jean 01 December 2015 (has links)
The pedicle screws are widely used for instrumentation and correction of the spine. The general objective of this doctoral project is to investigate the influence of surgical choice and morphological changes in the vertebrae on the biomechanical anchorage of pedicle screws. A combined approach using a detailed numerical model to simulate the screw-vertebrae interaction and the acquisition of necessary experimental data to validate the numerical tool was chosen. This doctoral project proposes an original and innovative finite element model taking into account the contact interface between the bone structures and an elastoplastic behavior with bone fracture modeling to describe the biomechanics of the screw / vertebra interaction. In addition, this project also propose a protocol and a method of analysis for the study pedicle screws in non-axial loads. The knowledge developed during this doctoral project have provided practical recommendations for clinicians and developers of biomedical implants, both on future choices of design pedicle screws that screw choice and placement to obtain better anchoring. In the long term, the model could be adapted to further analyze the specific characteristics of the patient and be used as a virtual training or a preoperative planning tool.

Exploration de la performance de la gouvernance des petites pêcheries du Pacifique Sud par une démarche de recherche-action / Exploration of the performance of the governance of small-scale fisheries in the South Pacific through action research

Léopold, Marc 22 June 2018 (has links)
This work is a contribution for elaborating a research framework for the study of institutional development for the comanagement of common fishery resources. Indeed this governance mode is marginally being used worldwide despite its positive impacts that have been proved in a large number of concrete cases.Specifically the thesis examines the performance of the governance of small-scale fishery through an empirical and inductive approach of institutional economics. Our action research framework guided interventions of public fishery policy on the management of overexploited marine resources in several case studies in New Caledonia and Vanuatu (South Pacific) between 2008 and 2016.Those cases corresponded to different contexts and temporal and spatial scales. The thesis is supported i) by a theoretical causal model of the effects of this kind of intervention on institutional change in smallscale fisheries, and ii) by an evaluation grid of the dynamics of institutional development in the case studies. It analytically and practically explores the process of adaptive experimentation of co-management development in reallife conditions. Academic and non academic knowledge on small-scale fisheries and the learning through shared governance is mobilized. Results show that spatial, multi-scale management of reef fisheries through temporary openings and closures of fishing is a way to combine community-based management and government intervention that is relevant for a number of single- and multi-species fisheries in the South Pacific. Four key processes that drive the economic performance of fishery co-management regimes are highlighted, namely individual learning of systemic processes, collective learning, homogenization of actors’ strategies, and building of capacity for action. These processes are interdependent following their own temporality in response to multiple stresses and fishery contingencies, that determine the initial conditions of the interventions in particular. By explicitly taking into account sustainability problems of smallscale fisheries at both the national and the local, operational levels, our researchframework proposes truly transdisciplinary research guidelines on the co-management of small-scale fisheries and on its capacity for addressing sustainability challenges more efficiently.
