The leadership role of the principal in managing and supporting curriculum change in South African schoolsRamparsad, Sherin 01 1900 (has links)
.
This investigation focuses on the leadership role of the principal in managing and
supporting curriculum change in South African schools. The results reveal that principals are
required to initiate change and to lead the curriculum change process in schools. Principals are
expected to monitor, manage and evaluate the implementation of OBE in their schools. They also
need to provide ongoing support to colleagues and are further required to acquire and employ
skills, qualities, characteristics and a management style that is suitable for the OBE leader.
This investigation recommends that for principals to manage and support curriculum change
effectively in South African schools:
• Principals are in need of more training and ongoing support
• Commitment and support to the outcomes based curriculum is called for
• Skills and qualities, for effective leadership, needs to be acquired and employed
• A strategy to manage, monitor, support and evaluate curriculum implementation
in the school is needed. / Educational Leadership and Management / M.Ed. (Educational Management)

Background: Have you ever wondered what top athletes occupy themselves with after their career? Most scientists agree that it is important to take advantage of the qualities and traits that elite athletes received through sport. Therefore, are athletes able to use and exploit their sports background in business? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate which traits former elite athletes consider important in an effective business leader. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine the traits that former elite athletes feel that they have developed during their sporting careers, which they now have the use of in their leading position in the business world. Question: What is, according to former elite athletes, essential for an effective leader in business? What traits have these former elite athletes, in their view, developed during their active career? Methodology: The study uses a qualitative method which is based on six semi-structured interviews with former Olympians. All interviews were conducted by phone or videoconference call. Conclusion: The authors answer the questions and try to clearify the respondents’ interpretations of the key traits of effective leaders. The authors believe that it is also possible to identify some traits that the respondents brought from the sport and that they now use in their civilian career.

Axenstedt, Simon, Fredriksson, Karin January 2018 (has links)
The field of leadership is a previously well-explored area, but relatively little research in the subject has concerned Swedish organizations and even less government institutions and authorities. In the following study, what managers at a government authority are perceived as factors to exercise successful leadership in their organization are investigated. The study is based on empirical evidence from qualitative interviews with five managers at the State Administration of Transport, Trafikverket. Through this study, a new interview method has also been developed, interactive themed interview. Where the respondent is a part in creating and designing the interview guide. In the results of this study, it is found that the investigated managers themselves felt that successful leadership in their organization is based on four factors. These are referred to as relationships, decision making, development and authenticity. The conclusions that this study can contribute beyond what factors the managers themselves consider generating a successful leadership are also how the managers act to exert what they experience successful leadership, but also what roles a successful leadership includes. That the role of the manager, the role of leader and the role as himself, affects the aforementioned factors, relationships, decision and development, and that the interaction between these roles and factors in various ways affects the managers' degree of perceived success in their leadership. The study also shows that Trafikverket's new leadership philosophy is in line with what managers perceive as contributing factors for the pursuit of successful leadership. And that this new philosophy can help managers to exert more what they themselves experience as a successful leadership.

A framework for organisational performance in local government focusing on effective leadership consistency : a case of Tshwane MunicipalityManganye, Matshwenyego Frans 04 1900 (has links)
Metropolitan Municipalities are faced with myriad complex challenges that affect their effectiveness and efficiency in fulfilling their legislated responsibilities of rendering/providing services to their respective communities and customers. The lack of effective leadership consistency in top and senior management of most Metropolitan Municipalities result to failure and inability for municipalities to achieve their strategic objectives including the realisation of performance. Moreover, the absence of effective leadership consistency manifest in many forms such as inadequate oversight, noncompliance to legislations, failure to meet performance targets, numerous service delivery protests, projects stoppage and disruption, ineffective leadership and unfavourable audit opinions.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of consistency on effective leadership and its influence in achieving the organisational objectives and the realisation of organisational performance in the Metropolitan Municipalities using City of Tshwane as a case. Furthermore, to develop a framework prescribing how effective leadership consistency should be formed and used to realise performance and achieve strategic objectives in local government. A sequential exploratory mixed method approach was applied in this study. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods complemented each other’s strengths, and further overcame weaknesses and limitations in collecting the data.
A self-administered Questionnaire was used to collect 177 data with a response rate of 88.5% for the Quantitative data, while face-to-face interviews was used to collect the Qualitative part from 15 respondents. Quantitative techniques namely, Descriptive Statistics was used to analyse the frequency and percentage response of the participants while Inferential Statistics simple t-test was used to assess the difference in participant’s responses. Furthermore, Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to measure the level of association between variables of the study; and Forward Stepwise Regression was applied to assess the relationship between the variables of study.
The study found that consistency of leadership in the organisation is positively correlated with effective leadership; consistency of effective leadership in the organisation correlates to the achievement of the strategic objectives; and consistency of effective leadership in the organisation correlates to the realisation of performance. Moreover, a framework has been developed prescribing how effective leadership consistency should be used to effect or bring about organisational performance. The research study recommended that consistency of effective leadership at the top and senior management is essential and absolutely necessary, and it should be wellmaintained for the realisation of success of the municipalities. / Graduate School of Business Leadership / D.B.L.

The Relationship Of 10th-grade District Progress Monitoring Assessment Scores To Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test Scores In Reading And Mathematics For 2008-2009Underwood, Marilyn 01 January 2010 (has links)
The focus of this research was to investigate the use of a district created formative benchmark assessment in reading to predict student achievement for 10th-grade students on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in one county in north central Florida. The purpose of the study was to provide information to high school principals and teachers to better understand how students were performing and learning and to maximize use of the formative district benchmark assessment in order to modify instruction and positively impact student achievement. This study expanded a prior limited study which correlated district benchmark assessment scores to FCAT scores for students in grades three through five in five elementary schools in the targeted county. The high correlations suggested further study. This research focused on secondary reading, specifically in 10th grade where both state and targeted county FCAT scores were low in years preceding this research. Investigated were (a) the district formative assessment in reading as a predictor of FCAT Reading scores, (b) differences in strength of correlation and prediction among student subgroups and between high schools, and (c) any relationships between reading formative assessment scores and Mathematics FCAT scores. An additional focus of this study was to determine best leadership practices in schools where there were the highest correlations between the formative assessment and FCAT Reading scores. Research on best practices was reviewed, and principals were interviewed to determine trends and themes in practice. Tenth grade students in the seven Florida targeted district high schools were included in the study. The findings of the study supported the effective use of formative assessments both in instruction and as predictors of students' performance on the FCAT. The results of the study also showed a significant correlation between performance on the reading formative assessment and performance on FCAT Mathematics. The data indicated no significant differences in the strength of correlation between student subgroups or between the high schools included in the study. Additionally, the practices of effective principals in using formative assessment data to inform instruction, gathered through personal interviews, were documented and described.
