Origins and comparative performance of the composite bowRandall, Karl Chandler IV 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis shall identify the date origin of the composite bow within Mesopotamia and Elam. and both identify and quantify the design factors which lead to increased performance possible with composite construction. To accomplish this, the thesis begins by summarizing the problems and flaws that currently exist in the field of history as it applies specifically to archery and bow use. With problems identified, the thesis will then introduce the reader to the basics of bow mechanics, thereby laying the basis for physical testing. This in turn will empirically demonstrate flaws in the current iconographical method of bow identification. The thesis will then devise a new method for iconographic identification of composite construction that has greater proven accuracy, based upon proportional length, which will link extant artifacts with both physical test results and iconographic evidence.
The reader shall then be led through a complete reevaluation of iconographical evidence for Mesopotamia and Elam starting at the beginning of the second millennium BCE and working backwards using this new method of iconographic evaluation to determine the point at which composite bow technology first appears in the ancient Near East. The thesis will finish with an overview of the above accomplishments and their potential impact on the study of ancient and military history. / Classics and World Languages / D. Litt. et Phil. Previous issue date: 2009 / Resumo: O presente trabalho visa compreender os processos que levaram a dinastia ptolomaica a estabelecer sua legitimidade no Egito por quase três séculos a partir de um projeto político-religioso que enfatizava a adoção de práticas mágico-religiosas egípcias e da adoção da monarquia divina egípcia tendo como expressão da materialidade o uso da arquitetura e da iconografia na titulatura em decretos e de forma diversa, e, sobretudo por um programa de construções de templos no Alto Egito, principalmente após a Rebelião Tebana de modo a estabelecer relações de poder, de cooperação e cooptação dos segmentos sociais afim de consolida a legitimidade dinástica. Outrossim, o presente trabalho visa desenvolver metodologias e grades de análises de modo a demonstrar o sentido da pesquisa. As fontes de caráter iconográfico e arquitetônico utilizadas em boa parte fazem parte do acervo fotográfico do autor. / Abstract: The intention of his thesis is to understand the Ptolemaic dynasty processes which allowed to establish his legitimacy almost three centuries based on politic-religious project that the main focus is the adoption of Egyptian magic-religious practices and the adoption of Egyptian divine monarch that the materiality expression is the architecture and iconography used in titles, decrees and other forms and especially developed by building program of temples in Upper Egypt, mainly after the end of Theban Rebellion, with an intention to establish power relation, cooperation and cooptation of social segments consolidating dynastic legitimacy. The development of the arabic essay and short story with particular reference to the contributions of Mustafā Lutfī al-ManfalūtīJappie, Achmat Ahdiel 30 November 2007 (has links)
The dissertation firstly looks at how the Arabic essay and short story developed in Egypt since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Then a discussion follows on the life and contribution of the Egyptian author, Mustafā Lutfī al-Manfalūtī, as representative of this literary evolution.
The general influences on Egyptian literature are discussed, and the general development of Arabic prose from 1850 onwards is then detailed, including the efforts to save Arabic literature from stagnation and degeneration. Following this, the focus is on the origins of the essay and short story. This leads to dealing with the growth and advancement of the essay and short story, together with the revival of the Arabic heritage and how the Arabic novel came into being.
Then Mustafā Lutfī al-Manfalūtīs biography, environmental circumstances and personalities that influenced his writings are focused on. Afterwards, the core discussion is Al-Manfalūtīs seven literary works, and his ideas and opinions as reflected in his writings. Thesis (MPhil (Ancient Studies)--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The geographical location of Punt has been the subject of much scholarly controversy for years.
Numerous locations have been provided, favouring either regions in southern Arabia or East
Africa. The latter being the more accepted theory in this case. Locating the region of Punt is
linked to the foreign trade relations of Egypt during the Dynastic period. The practices that
governed the Egyptian economy and thus its trade relations are studied, along with textual
translations and visual sources in order to determine the kind of contact Egypt had with Punt, the
trade relations between these two regions and the commodities they traded. These things
determine the landscape that Puntites traversed, providing a profile of their habitat, the people
that lived in it and thus a possible location for the region, which is believed to encompass the
Gash Delta, on the borders of modern day Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis sets out to examine, as far as possible within the constraints of a limited study, the
nature of the Christianity professed in the first centuries of the Common Era, by means of an
historical examination of Egyptian Christianity. The thesis contends that the believers in
Christ's teachings, in the first century, were predominantly Jewish, that "Christianity" did not
exist as a developed separate religion until its first formal systematizations commenced in the
second century, through the prolific writings of the Alexandrians, Clement and Origen. It is
noted that the name "Christianity" itself was coined for the first time in the second century by
Ignatius of Antioch; and that until the fourth century it is more accurate to speak of many
Christianities in view of regional-cultural and interpretative differences where the religion took
root. The study examines the main religions of the world in which the new religion began to
establish itself, and against which it had to contend for its very survival. Many elements of these
religions influenced the rituals and formulation of the new religion and are traced through
ancient Egyptian religion, the Isis and Serapis cults, Judaism, Gnosticism and Hermeticism.
Alexandria, as the intellectual matrix of the Graeco-Roman world, was the key centre in which
the new religion was formally developed. The thesis argues, therefore, that despite the obscurity
of earliest Christianity in view of the dearth of extant sources, the emergent religion was
significantly Egyptian in formulation, legacy and influence in the world of Late Antiquity. It is
argued, in conclusion, that the politics of the West in making Christianity the official religion
of the empire, thus centring it henceforth in Rome, effectively effaced the Egyptian roots. In
line with current major research into the earliest centuries of Christianity, the thesis contends
that while Jerusalem was the spring of the new religion Alexandria, and Egypt as a whole,
formed a vital tributary of the river of Christianity which was to flow through the whole world.
It is argued that without the Egyptian branch, Christianity would have been a different
phenomenon to what it later became. The legacy of Egyptian Christianity is not only of singular
importance in the development of Christianity but, attracting as it does the continued interest of
current researchers in the historical, papyrological and archaeological fields, it holds also
considerable significance for the study of the history of religions in general, and Christianity in
particular. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die proefskrif poog om, insover moontlik binne beperkte skopus, die aard van die vroeë
Christendom gedurende die eerste eeue V.C. te ondersoek, deur middel van 'n historiese
ondersoek van die Egiptiese Christendom. Die tesis voer aan dat die vroegste Christelike
gelowiges in die eerste eeu N.C. grootendeels Joods was, en dat die Christendom as afsonderlike
godsdiens nie ontstaan het nie voor die formele sistematiseringe wat deur die Aleksandryne
Clemens en Origines aangebring is nie. Selfs die term Christendom is vir die eerste keer in die
tweede eeu n.C. deur Ignatius van Antiochië versin; daar word verder opgemerk dat voor die

The search for a ‘historical Moses’ is one which has been debated for several centuries. In spite of copious archaeological finds in Egypt and other parts of the ancient Near East, no material remains have been found to substantiate the Exodus story. Mythological stories from the ancient Near East bear striking similarities to the Moses narrative found in the Hebrew Bible. The inconsistencies found in the Hebrew Bible further hamper the attempt to find a historical Moses, instead Moses is found only in tradition. Taking these issues into consideration, other possibilities need to be investigated. This dissertation places Moses growing up in the court of Akhenaten an 18th Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh in the middle of the 14th century BCE. The study investigates the possibility of Moses as a son of Akhenaten with Nefertiti as a stepmother, his own biological mother, a Mitannian princess, having died giving birth to Moses. Several similarities between Akhenaten and Moses are discussed throughout the study. Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study investigates the social and religious roles of women in Ancient Israel.
The thesis comprises of four parts.
Chapter 1 focuses on the role of women in an anthropological perspective. We
take a look at how women were perceived within the pre-industrial communities.
Israel did not live in a vacuum but was part and parcel of the ancient Near Eastern
cultural world. Chapter 2 therefore focuses on the role of women in Egyptian and
Assyrio-Babylonian cultures. Her social, economic, political and religious roles are
under investigation.
In Chapter 3 the focus shifts to the role of women within the social organisation. A
short overview with a few examples demonstrates where the role of women
expands beyond that of social organisation. This role, which could be described as
a "political function", was only allocated to a few privileged women.
Chapter 4 deals with the religious role of the Israelite women. This chapter forms
the other focus point of the study. The religious activities of women within the
official, popular and familiy religious spheres are examined.
Chapter 5 presents a brief summary of the main conclusions of the study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word ondersoek ingestel na die sosiale en religieuse rol van die vrou in
Oud-Israel. Die tesis bestaan uit vier dele:
In Hoofstuk I word aandag gegee aan die rol van die vrou in antropologiese perspektief.
Hier word nagegaan hoe die vrou gesien is in pre-industriële gemeenskappe.
Omdat Israel nie in 'n vakuum geleef het nie, maar 'n integrale deel van die ou Nabye
Oosterse kultuurwêreld was, word daar in Hoofstuk 2 op 'n oorsigtelike wyse op die plek
van die vrou in die kulture van Egipte en Assirië- Babilonië gekonsentreer.
In Hoofstuk 3 verskuif die fokus na Israel en word nagegaan watter rol die vrou in die
sosiale organisasie gehad het. Daar word ook kortliks gekyk na voorbeelde waar die rol
van die vrou wyer gestrek het as die engere familie kring. Hierdie rol, wat getipeer sou
kon word as 'n tipe "politieke funksie", was egter net vir 'n paar vroue beskore.
Hoofstuk 4 handel oor die religieuse rol van die vrou in Israel. Hierdie hoofstuk vorm die
ander fokuspunt van die studie. Daar word gekyk na die aandeel van die vrou in die
offisiële religie, die populêre religie en die familie-religie.
In Hoofstuk 5 word die belangrikste bevindinge van die ondersoek kortliks saamgevat.
