Although the title of the work suggest a centrality in thought rotterdamês not do here an intellectual history, but we strive to bring a focused discussion on the assumptions of the history of ideas, at which chosen as one of the theses that spans centuries and was played also by Erasmus of Rotterdam, that is, the age-old dispute between the spiritual power and the secular power of the papacy and empire, since the five hundred, will have a regal figure, whose strength and importance has been building for more than two centuries in the principalities , regna and republics. Embora o título do trabalho sugira uma centralidade no pensamento do rotterdamês, não fazemos aqui uma história intelectual, mas esforçamo-nos por trazer uma discussão centrada nos pressupostos da história das ideias, oportunidade em que escolhemos como uma das teses que percorreu séculos e foi tocada também por Erasmo de Rotterdam, ou seja, a disputa milenar entre o poder espiritual e o poder secular entre papado e império que, já nos quinhentos, contará com a figura régia, cuja força e importância vem se construindo há mais de dois séculos nos principados, regna e repúblicas. A partir do esforço de leitura e interpretação da obra Institutio principis christiani (A educação de um príncipe cristão) defendemos que seus posicionamentos sobre a questão da origem e função do governo e do governante devem-se também, em larga medida, à sua filiação a diferentes e divergentes sistemas de crenças e tradições. Nesse sentido, apontamos que Erasmo acolhe e divulga teses políticas derivadas do aristotelismo, do platonismo e dos pensadores do romanismo imperial e republicano combinadas com a moralidade cristã via o ensinamento dos “padres da igreja”, optando então pela visão de que o governo dos príncipes se destina à promoção do bem comum dos cidadãos que vivem nos principados, regna ou repúblicas. Ao exercer sua função de conselheiro de Carlos de Gante, filho de Filipe I de Castela, e futuro governante do sacro império romano, dedica-lhe um tratado especular com conselhos para que faça um bom governo. Nesse tratado, vemos Erasmo prescrever uma moralidade não apenas cristã, mas embebida também dos ensinamentos dos autores pagãos, deixando clara a influência desses pensadores não só nessa obra, mas em toda sua produção como “homem de saber” do seu tempo.

The object of this essay was, first, to study what advantages parliamentary members in the participating countries argue that their country gains when university students study abroad via ERASMUS, and, second, to study two factors that might affect what advantages that are emphasised by the parliamentary members in the participating countries. To achieve this object, two research questions were posed regarding what advantages of the ERASMUS Programme are mentioned in the parliamentary debate in three countries, United Kingdom, Sweden and Germany, and regarding whether the parliamentary debate is different between the countries as concerns what advantages are emphasised. Subsequently another two research questions were studied, regarding whether the countries’ different positions in Europe and the existence of euroscepticism in these countries affect what advantages of the ERASMUS Programme are emphasised in the parliamentary debate. The study was carried out using argumentation analysis, in which the arguments for participation in the ERASMUS Programme presented in the parliamentary debates were compiled and grouped together according to whether they refer to economic and professional advantages or to cultural and social advantages. The results of the study showed that there are differences between the countries regarding what advantages are emphasised in the parliamentary debate. After a discussion of the countries’ different positions in Europe and the existence of euroscepticism in these countries, the conclusion was that a country’s position in Europe does not affect what advantages of the ERASMUS Programme that are emphasised in the parliamentary debate, while the level of euroscepticism in a country does affect what advantages are emphasised.

Mobility support in education is one of key, longtime targets of the EU. Apart from significant financial resources that are put into this target through various EU programmes, mobility is also supported by other means. This master's thesis focuses on describing and analyzing mobility support in terciary education in the EU in view of the newest trends in this field -- the use of ICT. The aim is to introduce and critically evaluate the current problematics of academic mobility in the EU, describe the relation and importance of physical and virtual mobility and outline possible future developments. Furthermore, the paper attempts to justify this mobility support by putting academic mobility in the context of individual and economic competitiveness, and thus find out whether virtual mobility itself can be a catalyst for competitiveness.

The analytical part researches implementation processes of educational programs, international activities analysis of Faculty of business, bilateral contracts and questionnaire survey. Knowledge of the analytical part is used in the proposal part, where results of the research are evaluated and drawn up procedures to improve processes. Proposals and disposals leading to increasing student´s participation and process optimization were compiled on the basis of gained information about Faculty of business and they respect educational concept of European Union.

The potential of the Erasmus Programme : Assessing European Identity in Greek Erasmus Students

Since the establishment of the Erasmus exchange programme in 1987, its potential in various aspects has been evident. Many researches have been conducted regarding the Erasmus programme and its possible effects on European identity in higher education students, providing varying outcomes. Based on a survey of 200 Greek former Erasmus students, this thesis, examined the European identity among Greek students that have participated in the Programme proving its potential in terms of fostering European identity. The European identity in students was conceptualizes in terms of its spontaneous, civic and cultural aspects while its analysis was based on the theories of social constructivism and orientalism. Furthermore, the thesis conducted a correlation examination between the European identity levels of students and the destination country of their sojourn, in the hopes of establishing if the rising Euroscepticism in European countries affects the enrichment of the European identity in any way. However, the data largely reported against such a relationship.

Soft skills and the Erasmus+ programme : A qualitative study of Swedish Erasmus+ students and their experiences of exchange studies

Traditionally, higher education has put a lot of emphasis on cognitive ways of knowing. Although the focus on theoretical knowledge still remains, the labor market’s demand for social skills have increased rapidly over the past decades. Investments in the internationalisation of higher education have created a platform in which the learning of noncognitive ways of knowing is promoted. The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand how exchange studies have influenced the Swedish students participating in the Erasmus+ programme focusing on the development of soft skills. Nine students from Uppsala university were interviewed to understand how they regarded and viewed their exchange studies. In centre of interest is the growth of social learning through cultural experiences. To broaden the analysis, an additional expert interview was conducted with a study- and career counsellor involved with the Erasmus+ programme at Uppsala university. Using a Bourdieusian framework, the findings of this work indicate that soft skills could be viewed as being part of the cultural capital. By focusing on the importance of learning outside your comfort zone, the participants identified personal development through intercultural experiences. Viewing soft skills as cultural capital and by identifying that knowledge becomes embodied through social interaction, exchange studies could be seen as a great platform for learning and developing intercultural experiences.

A Lesson in Rhetoric: Finding God Through Language in “Batter my heart”

A reexamination of John Donne's Holy Sonnet “Batter my heart,” especially one looking at the sonnet's relationship to Early Modern rhetoric, is long overdue. In this paper, I hope to show that a focus on Donne's relationship to Early Modern rhetoric yields several useful new insights. I argue specifically that Donne was probably exposed to Non-Ramist rhetorical methods and theory at many points in his education, from his childhood to his college years to his years at the Inns of Court. Furthermore, Non-Ramist rhetoric has moral implications, suggesting that aspects of an author's feelings, character, and desires can be analyzed by looking at the writer's rhetorical choices in relation to a specific audience in a specific situation. After discussing Donne's rhetorical education, I will look at how the rhetorical decisions of the poetic speaker in Donne's “Batter my heart” reveal his opinions of God and develop his attitudes toward God over the course of the poem. Indeed, the poetic speaker uses rhetoric that exerts power back on him, causing him to change: whereas at the beginning of the poem the poetic speaker thinks he controls his relationship with God, at the end he sees himself as God's humble subject. Ultimately, the poetic speaker's feelings of utter separation from God at the end of the poem actually yield a sense that he has found God and has gained a sense of awe surrounding the Divine.
