Riverine border practices : people's everyday lives on the Thai-Lao Mekong border

Wisaijorn, Thanachate January 2018 (has links)
Pluralities of people s crossings of the Mekong Thai-Lao border occur as locals subvert, reject, ignore, and embrace the logic of the national border. From a state-centric point of view, the everyday movements of these people, who rely mainly on a subsistence economy and have their own modes of crossing, are undocumented. I argue that people s mobility co-exists with the practice of sedentary assumption. The aim of this thesis is to promote theory related to the Third Space in Borderland Studies by the presentation and analysis of people s pluralities in border-crossings. The borderland area of Khong Chiam (Thailand)-Sanasomboun (Lao PDR) is the location of an in-between state in which spatial negotiations, temporal negotiations, and negotiations of political subjectivities contribute to the nature of mobility in the Third Space. To achieve the objective of this thesis, ethnographic methodology was used over six months of fieldwork from March to September 2016, and included participant observations, interviews and essay-readings that involved 110 participants in the borderland site. People s movements across the Mekong River border occur daily without formal state approval. From the perspective of the Thai Ban, the river is a lived space in which they catch food and use for transport. However, their interpretation of the Mekong as the state boundary does not completely disappear. This thesis examines the everyday banal pluralities of the Thai Ban s border-crossings by weaving together the three concepts of space, temporality, and negotiations of political subjectivities. The spatial and temporal negotiations involved in the border-crossings shape and are shaped by this other interpretation of the Mekong as a lived space, and different political subjectivities contribute to the pluralities of the crossings. The presentation of these pluralities of border-crossings adds to Borderland Studies specifically and the social sciences in general in the development of an understanding of the Third Space. As this thesis focuses on people s mobility at quasi-state checkpoints and in areas along the Mekong Thai-Lao border with no border checkpoints, it is suggested that future research examines the everyday practices of border-crossings at land borders.

Dimensions of Religious Practice: The Ammatoans of Sulawesi, Indonesia

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: This thesis is an ethnographic account of the religious practices of the Ammatoa, a Konjo-speaking community of approximately 4600 people living in the southeast uplands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It examines aspects of Ammatoan rituals, cosmology, culture, economy, and politics that, from their point of view, are also considered religious. For the purpose of this dissertation, I understand religion to be ways of relationship between human beings and their fellow humans: the living and the dead, other beings, such as animals, plants, forests, mountains, rivers, and invisible entities such as gods and spirits. This conception of religion provides a better framework for understanding Ammatoan religion because for them religion includes many aspects of everyday life. The Ammatoans divide their land into an inner and an outer territory. The former is the constrained domains for their indigenous religion and the latter is more open to interaction with the outside world. The politics of territorial division has enabled Ammatoans to preserve their indigenous religion and navigate pressures from outside powers (i.e., Islam and modernity). The politics is, in part, a religious manifestation of Ammatoan oral tradition, the Pasang ri Kajang, which is the authoritative reference for all elements of everyday life. By following the tenets of the Pasang, Ammatoans seek to lead a life of kamase-masea, a life of simplicity. I explore how Ammatoans apply, challenge, and manipulate their understandings of the Pasang. Ammatoans demonstrate their religiosity and commitment to the Pasang through participation in rituals. This dissertation explores the diversity of Ammatoan rituals, and examines the connections between these rituals and the values of the Pasang through an extended analysis of one particular large-scale ritual, akkatterek (haircut). This ritual serves to incorporate a child into the wider Ammatoan cosmos. I also explore the encounters between Ammatoan indigenous religion, Islam, and modernity. I argue that the local manifestation of the concepts of Islam and modernity have both influenced and been influenced by Ammatoan indigenous religion. I conclude that despite their conversion to Islam and the intrusion of modernity, Ammatoan indigenous religion persists, albeit as an element of a hybrid cultural complex. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Religious Studies 2012

Everyday life for children with a parent who has cancer : A systematic literature review

Ramos Marcos, Laura January 2018 (has links)
Cancer is one of the most common long-term conditions for adults between 25 and 64 years, an age where it is probable to live with children under 18 years at home. This systematic literature review aims to de-scribe children’s everyday life, when one parent has cancer, and the interventions these children need. Previous studies have already agreed on the importance of this field, although there is still limited research. Eleven articles have been extracted from four different databases, following inclusion criteria and a quality assessment procedure, designed by the author. A qualitative content analysis has been developed through categorisation of relevant findings. Results describe, on one hand, children’s everyday life when a parent has cancer, and on the other hand interventions to cover the new needs those children might experience. Children’s mental health can undergo negative emotions and behaviour modification, also a higher ten-dency of children’s social isolation, as well as financial issues that modify children’s everyday life leisure activities, and variations in family functioning with family distress. Interventions to support children’s new needs must focus on psychological, peer, financial and family supports. Coping skills and a fluent communication within the family functioning are indispensable to promote a positive children’s everyday life when a parent has cancer. Limited information about financial and school interventions need to be remedied in future researches.

Lindgren Derbas, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to study experiences of everyday racism in individuals with overseas cultural backgrounds from outside situations. The study was made with five qualitative interviews. Theories that’s been used are about everyday racism, stereotypes, symbolic interactionism and Cooleys looking glass self. The result show that all the respondents have experienced everyday racism in a variety of situations in different places/environments. They have described situations where they have been ignored/excluded, stereotyped, exposed of grossly words and prejudices about their personality. Symbolic interactionism can explain everyday racism based on how the situations are defined, how situations change, which affects the interaction depending on how specific strong symbols are understood; like skin tone and a person looks.

[en] DIGITAL TV IN MOBILE DEVICES: OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LOW INCOME COMSUMERS / [pt] TV DIGITAL EM APARELHOS PORTÁTEIS: OPORTUNIDADES ENTRE OS CONSUMIDORES DE BAIXA RENDA

LIGIA AMORIM RIZZO 02 June 2010 (has links)
[en] Television has always had a relevant place in the Brazilian everyday life, and new possibilities of consumption may influence the way viewers relate with television content. The influence of television on the Brazilian everyday life and the spreading of mobile telephony among the lower income classes have established favorable conditions for the introduction and later adoption of portable TV for mobile phones, which was made possible by the introduction of digital TV technology in Brazil. The theory of learning by analogy was used as theoretical basis to analyze the process of absorbing this technology, which, although new from a delivery point of view, is already well known and considered by Brazilians, as we can see when we consider its large stand in popular preference. The contextualizing of the introduction conditions is thus tied to the understanding of the dimensions, characteristics and meanings obtained by TV in everyday life. The option for lower classes as an object of study stems from the fact those classes represent the larger consumption of television programs. The results of the exploratory research shows a great interest in watch TV anywhere, even outside home. This may indicate new commercial opportunities based that new form of media consumption. It also indicates that the weight of TV in everyday life may be significant towards the intention of adopting the portable TV as an alternative to TV content consumption in public places.

Londero, Mário Francis Pettry January 2011 (has links)
This work expounds cartography of affective maps about the clinical job in contemporaneity. It was produced from author‟s clinical trials and artistic landscapes that would be able to built instituting gaps in disciplinary and control mechanisms of modern capitalism. The Capitalist society rejects from itself the anguishing touch with what goes out of its normalizations. Capitalism banalizes the everyday life an attempt to anesthetize any unusual that presents itself. Admitting this logic that does not support the unexpected and that try really hard to control the unannounced, we will try to think about the contributions of clinical work in this social production that prevents anyone from lift away from a life made legislative and bureaucratic control. Using as starting point this context, this works discusses what the clinical work could do as a practice that is able to resists in a system that anesthetizes the life itself. So, during the work we discuss the power relations in this control society, but we do it focused in what enable resistance moves. To think the clinical work as a piece of resistance in the way to do banalise the everyday life, we use some conceptual tools and unfold these concepts: happening, individuation and creative act. Using this we will formulate the theme of clinical work and the possible roads that put this experience in a refuse condition to the disciplinary and control mechanisms used in our society. The unthinkable then comes into play to create power existences that are able to resist to the banalization of the everyday life.

Planejamento urbano na escuta : sons da cidade

Machado, Renata Silva January 2011 (has links)
The sounds of the city are subject of recent discussion. The 70th decade of the XXI Century is the period where the founders works in the study of sounds and of urban space are identified in literature linked to the social sciences, both pure and applied. Even being object of recent reflection and still little known, the sounds of the city takes themselves present in researches, if not as a central focus, as a constituent aspect of the town and the life in this place. This dissertation aims to identify the presence of the city sounds as theme of research in the Brazilian field of Urban and Regional Planning thru keywords searching in the studies of this area. The moments of analysis were two: former, to demarcate the temporal scope, was launched a broad look at PUR covering both dissertations and theses presented in Post-Graduation Program on Urban and Regional Planning (PROPUR/UFRGS) from the foundation of this program in 1970 until 2009, and the set of papers presented in the last four editions of the meetings of National Association of Post-Graduation in Urban and Regional Planning - ANPUR (X, XI, XII and XIII ENANPUR, that occurred respectively in the years 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009).In sequence were treated in depth the papers presented at the XIII ENANPUR (2009), because the biggest recurrence of keywords with associative potential with the research theme named sounds of the city was identified in this event. This analysis allows us to infer that the sounds are increasingly frequent topic in the PUR area, being identified as ways of dealing with the sounds the presentation of them as a constitutive part of the urban experience, as everyday practices, and as a aspect that is enounce because is apprehended as a problem.

In this paper, we will discuss specifically some topics involving knowledge organization as far as concept formation is concerned, searching to understand its nature. For this purpose, we have used as theoretical background the works on concept formation by Vygotsky ([1934] 2000) and Nelson (1998; 1986). We believe that Nelson’s views on young children cognitive processing, centered on the action context and on the children’s daily experiences can provide a more significant contribution for an extended vision of the nature of the process of concept formation than the ideas presented by Vygotsky who, in spite of stressing the importance of the context in concept formation, carried out his experiments based on artificial concepts. To check if the concepts become more abstract as time goes by or if they show to be limited to the individual’s context, connected to their memory (thus contextualized), we carry out a study with Elementary, Junior High and High School students as subjects, whose main purpose was to understand the nature of the participants’ concepts. The students were asked to define the terms “plant” and “animal” and took part in two classification activities using a set of cards, adapted from Panofsky, John-Steiner and Blackwell (1996), which consisted of twenty and one (21) pictures (07 belonging to the “plant” category and 14 to the “animal” category). From the analysis of the definitions obtained and of the justifications for grouping the items into categories, we could observe that there is not a single, exclusive base for the participants’ conceptualizations, that is, none of the categories has shown to be predominant. On the contrary, the category concepts are formed from internalized pieces of information about the world, no matter if these pieces of information are of a daily or of a more formal nature.

Specht, Ana Claudia January 2015 (has links)
This research seeks to reflect on the formation of singing in daily life. The investigative look rested on the formation of singing, which changes from the relations that the singing person establishes with his or her voice, and beyond with his or her vocal emission. The research adopted as it's investigative method the case study to address the singing of two people interested in reporting their formation course. Data collection included various materials provided by participants, audio recordings of observations and open interviews. The analysis focused on the capture of singing (past, present and future perspectives) and spaces where the singing people go around, work, live and experience their singing. These stories were described, aiming at the unveiling of singing linked to life experiences from the theoretical perspective of Josso (2004) and in the daily singing from the perspective of Pais’ sociology of everyday life (2003). The research results reveal individual trajectories of a know-how [sing] which is or was learned and enhanced through life experiences; and the here and now that the singing sounds and permeates. It is in this telling [case studies] that the singing people show formation processes, strategies and ways to cope, connect, know and to learn. The present study contributes to the reflections on learning and the teaching of singing, providing subsidies for teacher training in this area.

Ferreira, Raquel Andrade January 2015 (has links)
The doctoral research project Spaces of Loss and Destruction – The Labyrinth as Metaphor and vice-versa, in the constitution of a contemporary poetic was developed between 2010 to 2015 at the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts of the Instituto de Artes of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS in Porto Alegre, Brazil, under the advisorship of Prof. Dr. Hélio Fervenza. During this period, I have produced a group of works composed of videos, photography, installations, words and phrases, instructions, objects and performative actions which have been presented in a variety of institutional exhibition spaces. All of these are permeated by the materiality of broken or safeguarded objects and presented using labyrinthical placement. The works have revealed a problematic triggering the reflections in this thesis, which may be summarized in the following question: How can one constitute a work of art and a poetic in the context of contemporary art by intercrossing spaces of the house and the polymorphic labyrinth? As a result of the practical and theoretical ramifications of these works, various concepts have become closely connected to it, such as: The everyday, the house, the labyrinth, loss and destruction. The process of articulating the works’ compositional elements evokes meanings and indicates their singularity, as well as cognitive aspects of the creative process.
