A Sociological Examination of Gossip in an Increasingly Technological Era

Jordan, Timothy P. January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Ted Gaiser / This study explores the alteration of gossip as a result of new technology. Specifically, this study examines the social implications of Facebook, a popular social networking website, on college students using the Boston College undergraduate population as a lens to study the college student population in general. Drawing from the theories of Simmel, Mead, and Goffman, and others, I outline how college students present themselves on Facebook’s online environment. I employed a mixed-method research approach, collecting data from a survey of Boston College undergraduates and, subsequently, conducting a series of in-depth face-to-face interviews in order to gain an understanding of how Facebook altered the social scene and, specifically, how Facebook affects gossip. Facebook is a communication tool widely used by college students in order to present themselves online and maintain relationships. I found that due to the pervasive nature of Facebook, in junction with the simplicity of posting information about oneself and others on Facebook, an important shift occurs in which private matters are publicized to a large audience. This shift facilitates the flow of gossip amongst college students. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. Perceptions of Audio Notifications Within a Mobile Messaging Experience

Marlo Owczarzak (6639647) 14 May 2019 (has links)
User interfaces often incorporate sound to notify users of application updates, to enhance games, and to assist complex interactions. Sound exists as a medium that can provide information that humans cannot understand through a purely visual interaction, and in a mobile interface context, using another medium could be useful to mitigate visual limitations in screen space and the amount of users’ attention focused on screen. Smartphones are now a ubiquitous part of people’s lives, and sound interactions can play an important role within these experiences. This study conducts research on users’ interactions with supplemental sounds while using Facebook Messenger. Facebook Messenger is the most popular messaging app in the United States, and its design includes a variety of unique user interface sounds. This study contributes design considerations for both researchers and industry professionals to apply to further research or the application of audio within a mobile messaging space.

Towards a definition of Web 2.0 - a comparative study of the 'wiki', 'blog' and 'social network' as instances of Web 2.0

Lewis, Belinda Ann 03 February 2009 (has links)
Web 2.0 was a phrase coined in 2004 to describe the characteristics of web sites which survived the original Dot-com crash. Despite the discussion of this phenomenon in a wide variety of both academic and mass media sources, itʼs exact definition remains unclear. The relative contributions of technology and social participation to this phenomenon are particularly confused. The primary aim of this research report is to provide a clear and comprehensive definition of Web 2.0. This definition is determined through a combined social and technological analysis of blogs, wikis and social network sites, through their particular manifestations in Boing Boing, Wikipedia and Facebook respectively. It is the finding of this research that Web 2.0 is primarily the result of a natural evolution from Web 1.0 technologies and attitudes, and that Web 2.0 is essentially a social phenomenon. This research provides separate definitions for Web 2.0 technologies and Web 2.0 platforms. A Web 2.0 technology is any technology that aids and encourages simple intuitive user interaction through an architecture of participation. These technologies enable user feedback, and are thus constantly improved and exist within the ethos of a perpetual beta. Web 2.0 technologies embrace re-mix and mash-up philosophies. A Web 2.0 platform is a read-write Web platform designed to enable and encourage User Generated Content and interaction. These platforms can be built with any set of technologies, and their primary characteristics are social in nature, but the platforms must allow users to interact with the technology at either an open-source, network or appropriation level. These platforms become more powerful and richer the greater the number of people using the platform, and ultimately result in the formation of Web 2.0 communities.

#RIP: Social Media and the Changing Experience of Life and Death

Keye, Wade 06 September 2017 (has links)
The mediated closeness experienced by social media users is built on the ongoing accumulation of personal information by corporate owned social media platforms. Each user’s digital footprint becomes more intricate as this collection continues across their life’s procession, leaving something behind after they die. Social media platforms have become intimately insinuated into life and finally, into death. These haphazard archives were never created with death or grief in mind. But users die, and their friends and family use social media to grieve; death isn’t something a platform or its users can avoid. This thesis examines the ways that death and grief are experienced and how social media is facilitating and changing that process. The study approaches social media and death historically, discursively, and economically. It discusses the history of mediated death, the experience of grief over social media, and the political economy of the socially mediated dead.

Fattaru vad jag säger? : En studie om hur kommuner använder sig av klarspråk på Facebook

Hammarstedt, Rickard, Westin, Anton January 2019 (has links)

Platsmarknadsföring : Små och medelstora tätorters platsvarumärkesuppbyggnad via det digitala nätet / Place Marketing : Smaller and medium sized urban areas place branding through the digital net

Andersson, Carl, Hög, Sandra January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how tourist agencies in rural areas work with their information channels for the place marketing of their destinations and brand management. By means of information channels we mean the tourist agencies' social media, their own website and printed materials. The questions asked in this paper are: How do the tourist agencies work with the destination's brand through the website and in social media such as Instagram and Facebook, and How do tourist agencies work with the image of the destination from visitors and the local in their social channels. The essay is based on a social constructivist point of view, since it is about the work of the tourist agencies about shaping the destination's brand and the place marketing that serves to create an idea of the place and its values. The conclusion of this study is that through social constructivism we were able to conclude that there are several decisive factors that affect the work of the tourist agencies with the location marketing and the brand than visitors and residents. The information collected gave more information than what was requested.

El uso del inglés en la red social Facebook por jóvenes estudiantes de una universidad privada en Lima, Perú

Caldas Aquije, Xiomara Ximena, Mendoza Leo, Sara Yasmin, Rivera Gonzaga, Carla Maria 23 October 2018 (has links)
Since the beginning of our era, relations between civilizations and cultures from different parts of the world presented diverse linguistic contacts between speakers of different languages. These generated a variation in the grammatical use and, therefore, a new vocabulary among the contacted languages, being English one of the most outstanding ones. Nowadays, English is the most influential language in the world and its use in Peru, whether through anglicisms or in a general way, is undeniable. It is also important to mention that it is spreading and growing thanks to the support of technology and the use of social networks. The present work aims to observe the use of English in the social network of Facebook by young students from 18 to 25 years of a private university in Metropolitan Lima. This study proposes to see - with a qualitative scope - how young university students (in this particular sector) use English in their posts. The following types of use were observed in the results: Spanglish, memes and -in general circumstances- the hashtag; among other factors that could be complemented with other studies, such as the possible learning and integration of the English language in this or other social networks, and the use of this language in other branches of research. / Tesis

Teaching Adolescents and Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorders How to Respond to Social Media Lures

Unknown Date (has links)
This study used a training package to teach social media safety skills, using Facebook, to adolescents and young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders in a small group setting. Participants were taught to decline, block and report when they received a lure from someone that they do not know. A multiple baseline design across lures demonstrated the effects of the intervention on participant performance. Results confirmed an increase in social media safety skills performed by all participants. Participants were able to maintain this skill set once the training package was removed. Spontaneous generalization was demonstrated by all participants for some lures. Generalization of social media safety skills was demonstrated across participants in a setting where they did not receive instruction. Limitations and implications for future research are discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
