Previous issue date: 2014-02-27 / Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica de Campinas / This study aims to investigate the emotional experience of women-mothers in situations of violence, seeking to show that domestic violence against women harms systematically their children, generating situations in which the rights of children and teenagers are disrespected as well. The study's methodology is organized around the study of eight cases selected from psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy administered to women-mothers facing violence. Their emotional experiences constitute a privileged resource for considering the impact of violence on their children, as they offer grounds for the comprehension of the experience of children, of teenagers and of adults, all living in the environment in which the violence developed. Their life stories were registered through transferential fictional narratives, preserving the dramas the patient went through, but omitting data that might allow for identification and self-identification. These narratives were considered through psychoanalytical methodology allowing for the interpretative creation of four affective-emotional fields: Mother and wife , Partner/Monster , Ally/Enemy and Home/Battlefield . The research material makes it clear that domestic violence against women impacts the emotional life of their children, be it for witnessing or being victims of the aggression, or by harming the family environment, which should sustain their development.

Violência no namoro entre jovens universitários no estado de São Paulo / Intimate partner violence among undergraduate students of state of São PauloFlake, Tania Aldrighi 05 June 2013 (has links)
The study is part of a multicenter survey \"International Study of Violence in Dating - IDVS\" using its standardized instrument. The objective was to contribute for the recognition of the occurrence of intimate partner violence during phase dating, based on conceptual issues of gender and its elements for understanding the formation of intimate relationship. Dialogue also with theories of human development, the acceptance of violence in conflict resolution and learning the violence of generational perspective. The proposed cut were three: a descriptive study on the prevalence of violence over the dating relationship and its various types; a second, addressed the violence and associated factors; and a third, evaluated the impact of violence on mental health from the depression disorder. The questionnaire was self-reported by 362 undergraduate students from two universities, one public and one private, of the State of São Paulo, with 37% male and 63% female, median age 20 years. We estimated the prevalence among students of violence in intimate relationships, suffered or perpetrated, for the kinds physical, psychological and sexual, describing the overlap among them. As for violence, 75.9% suffered some sort in life and 76.4% were perpetrators. The most prevalent type of violence, both suffered as perpetrated, was psychological, followed by sexual. The large overlap between violence suffered and perpetrated (83.9%) reflects the reciprocity of aggression, with no difference between men and women. In the analysis of factors associated with sex life in dating and approval of violence remained associated to suffer violence for women, while for men longer relationship more than 6 months and use of alcohol and drugs concomitant remained associated. In the case of perpetrated violence, the use of drugs and alcohol concomitant, jealousy and long relationship more than two years remained associated for women. In the model considered the types of violence and the association with depression, for women have suffered physical violence exclusive and physical and sexual concurrent remained associated. The results are consistent with previous literature on dating violence that shows high prevalence of violence suffered and perpetrated, beyond reciprocity between both, men and women. The situation seems to change either marital mutuality of aggression, whether the meaning of violence and the perpetrators, for women and for men, in contrast to the dating situation. The consequences of victimization in dating for women are more expressive, while for men it is important to examine in greater detail the specifics for the issue of male point of view. The findings of this study bring to the Brazilian context confirming the need for action and public policy in this direction, to produce important knowledge for prevention programs for young people in the stage dating, either in the health service, either in schools and universities, which concentrates the specific population of young people, in order to minimize the chances that the assaults continue in the marriage.

Previous issue date: 2010-06-30 / The issues related to domestic violence and gender inequality require interest for several reasons. The promulgation of Law 11,340, of 07 August 2006, appointed by the President of "Maria da Penha Maia" prompted many debates, both in the legal world and in society. With three years of duration, the mood is not quieted. Persist sometimes heated discussions. This justifies studies and reflections on the law that expanded the concepts of domestic violence against women, proposed a system of protection and the concentrated focus of attention on the victim. The woman, as victim of this violence is considered from the perspective of a complete individual: that is, deserves the protection of the law in the physical, psychological, sexual, property, moral. The Law of Domestic and Family Violence against Women proposed the creation of mechanisms to deter and prevent abuse within families and establish guidelines to combat discrimination, affirming the Human Rights of women, while recognizing the vulnerability of women under domestic relations or family. The constitutional principles of equality and dignity require the guarantee of Human Rights of Women, derived from the process of specialization and individualization of Human Rights. Law 11.340/06 was edited to meet the recommendations, in order to achieve an effective response to domestic violence and conceived from the perspective of gender, seek multidisciplinary solutions to the issue of violence against women, including measures awareness and training of professionals in various areas to give concreteness to a legal system out for Human Rights, in accordance with the democratic State of Law / Os temas relacionados à violência doméstica e à desigualdade de gênero demandam interesse por diversas razões.

Evaluation of Program Effectiveness: a Look at the Bedford Police Department’s Strategy Towards Repeat Victimization in Domestic Violence and Mental HealthHuskey, Michael G. 08 1900 (has links)
The primary goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a program being run by the Bedford Police Department’s Repeat Victimization Unit on domestic violence and mental health and mental retardation. The study sought to determine whether the program was effective in reducing instances of repeat victimization in domestic violence and MHMR victims. Additionally the program investigated whether or not the program was effective at reducing victimization severity, and which demographic could be identified as the most victimized. Participants consisted of 157 domestic violence and MHMR victims in the city of Bedford, Tx between November 11, 2012 to July 30, 2013. Findings indicate that levels of repeat victimization for domestic violence and MHMR are relatively low regardless of whether the victim received services through the repeat victimization program or not. Additionally the severity of these repeat victimizations remains relatively constant regardless of whether services were received through the program or not. Implications and findings are discussed.

Optimising the "spaces in-between" : the maternal alienation project and the politics of gender in macro and micro contexts.Morris, Anne January 2008 (has links)
The centrepoint of this thesis is an action research project, the Maternal Alienation Project (MAP), implemented during 2002 and 2003 in Adelaide, South Australia. Resourced by two government-funded community health services, it was established to improve organisations’ (health, welfare and legal) and systems’ responses to the newly termed ‘maternal alienation’. MAP was situated within a tradition of feminist participatory and action research. It was designed to work on three levels: practice, systems and policy-making, and research. The outcomes, processes and events of MAP at the different levels of its operation are examined in the thesis through the employment of a gendered analysis drawn mainly from materialist feminism and standpoint theories. Post-project interviews and focus groups provided further data to the fieldnotes written throughout MAP, and the project’s formal and informal documents. A recent example of a contested gendered concept, “maternal alienation” was first identified and named in 1999 as a component of gender violence (Morris 1999). It forms part of a spectrum of violence perpetrated in households, and had been identified within domestic violence and child sexual abuse. It is a term for the range of tactics used by mainly male perpetrators, predominantly the mothers’ intimate partners and the children’s fathers or step-fathers, to deliberately undermine the relationship between mothers and their children. The mother-blaming discourses and degrading constructions of mothers conveyed to children and those in the family’s orbit are strongly related to wider socio-cultural constructions of women and mothers. The thesis examines theories of gender, gendered organisations and gender violence. It develops the concept of an abusive household gender regime, characterised by perpetrators’ imposition of a coercive and abusive regime on household members, and particular patternings of gendered relations. Comparisons are made between household and organisational gender regimes, which are also viewed in relation to the local gender order at the time of MAP. It was found that services that lack an analysis of gender are likely to re-inscribe the dynamics of maternal alienation in their responses to families. Language was found to play a significant part in addressing maternal alienation, particularly in developing congruence between language and women’s and children’s “lived” experiences. The principles that were developed were founded on supporting mothers and rebuilding their relationships with children, and making visible the tactics employed by perpetrators, thereby reducing their power to coerce and increasing their accountability. The concept of maternal alienation and MAP itself were attacked by a coalition of men’s rights and Christian Right lobbyists. This compromised the operations of MAP, and of its key supporters, managers of feminist and gender-aware organisations. In many ways these attacks, played out at a macro level, reflected the techniques and dynamics of maternal alienation at a micro level. This thesis raises questions about the strategies that feminist organisations need to develop to more effectively pursue feminist agendas, and to re-invigorate a women’s movement. / Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Social Sciences, 2008

The child protection systems' response to domestic violenceDes Lauriers, Julie January 2007 (has links)
The co-occurrence of domestic violence (DV) and child maltreatment is high. Response to both problems has historically been via two different systems. However, child protection workers are increasingly asked to respond to this co-occurrence since research has identified that exposure to DV can negatively impact on children and that child maltreatment often co-occurs with DV. This study looks at child protection systems response to families affected by DV by using two research methods. First, a systematic review was conducted using research papers focusing on child protection workers response to families experiencing DV. Second, a critical discourse analysis of current Australian child protection policies was conducted. Findings from the systematic review show that child protection workers' response to abused mothers went from treating them as 'mad' in the 1980s, to labelling them 'failure to protect' in the 1990s and early 2000. These findings showed continued focus on abused mothers rather than on perpetrators of DV. Some contradictions were found around child removal data. However, important links were found between re-notification of children and subsequent removal. Findings from the Australian policy analysis revealed that most policies referred to DV as a child protection issue and used a feminist definition of DV. However, not all states had detailed guidelines on how to intervene safely and effectively with families affected by DV. Discussions and recommendations focus around the pressing need for more DV expertise within child protection systems. It also discusses the issue of responsibility placed on abused mothers while perpetrators of DV remain invisible. Finally, it discusses the response to children exposed to DV compared to the response to children exposed to DV who are also victim of direct child maltreatment. The key recommendations of this study are to have DV expertise within the child protection systems, to empower abused mothers rather than blaming them, which implies putting the responsibility back on the perpetrator of DV and to have resources and systems in place before responding to child exposure to DV as child maltreatment per se.

Experiencing domestic violence as a child : young adults’ recollections and suggestions for social work servicesWarnick, Danelia Verna 02 1900 (has links)
This study sought to explore and describe the recollections of young adults who were exposed to domestic violence within the family structure during childhood, so as to develop an understanding of the systems and structures needed to develop effective services to child victims of domestic violence. It is envisaged that services to these children could aid as an important preventative strategy, in that newly acquired behaviour and thinking patterns could assist them to defer from engaging in violent relationships, thereby, breaking the cycle of violence. The research study was conducted by means of a qualitative research approach and made use of the phenomenological, contextual, explorative and descriptive research designs. The purposive sampling technique was used and semi-structured interviews were employed to obtain the data. Tesch’s (cited in Creswell, 2009:186) proposed eight steps for data analysis were employed. Data verification focused on credibility/authenticity, transformability, dependability and conformability. It is envisaged that the findings and conclusions of this study could inform the planning of services to children exposed to domestic violence. / Social Work / M.A. (S.S.)

This research is born out of my personal experience of violence and also out of my personal observation of daily life and pastoral work in a poor neighborhood in Lima. I will employ the phenomenological method in order to retrieve my history from memories about my relationship at home. This method attempts to value women history and also to retrieve it out of a wider dynamic that englobes the relationship between women and men and between women and other women. I will, then, try to make an epistemological analysis of violence, in order to understand the social process of violence. The focus of the analysis will be the concept of gender. In the first moment I will analize the relationship between agressor and victim, then the focus is on the aggressor. I will try to undestand the role of gender to uncovering the patriarcal axis that rules the social fabric. In order to do that, will be necessary to focus also on the agressor as a product of the social system. This approach to the male identify construction offers some clues to understand the mechanism that leads into the perpetuation of male supremacy , which, on other hand, prevents just and equal reationships between men and women from taking place. The paradoxal and the challenging elements in this work are the view of the agressor as a victim of the patriarchal ideology and the search for a way of reconciliation between agressor and victim based on biblical claim of forgiveness, once the justice has not solved the problem through the sanctions enforcement. I do not intend to justify the agressor way, but to offer elements that help to build a proposal for violence preventing. The third chapter focus on the role of men in church, in order to design a pastoral plan theologically informed that plan as its major goal to help the church to develop pastoral work for violent men.

Ilcélia Alves Soares 10 November 2009 (has links)
Domestic violence against children and adolescents is considered as multifaceted phenomenon that is concerned to relations with power misuse among persons that would establish kinship and/or living together affective ties and they do not act like this. Its domestic violence manifestation locus has been the family which the adults fathers and mothers, i.e. parents, are themselves authors in, this violence subjects and producers, while the children and adolescents have, for their side, have been the persons that live under domestic violence situation. This is a familiar drama that has been framed within the collective world, transverse culture, economy, religion and politics. It is in this scenario that this work has been developed. Guided by a qualitative nature methodology, it this work aims at understanding the way families, within a domestic violence situation, attended by a Non-Governmental Organization, break through this scenario. Five families, constituted by adults, children and adolescents, all of themselves social actors that dwell in Recife city and its Recifes Metropolitan Regions have been participants in this research. The used instrument was the semistructured interview with questions concerning the domestic violence rupture against children and adolescents. The collected data have been subdued to a Content Analysis, aiming at identifying the senses that embody four thematic axes: identified violences, ties, affection and power relations, familiar dynamics and rupture process and ways
toward to breaking out. Through material analysis, collected in the interviews, it has been identified domestic physical and psychological violence presence within families, being the woman and the mother these violences against her sons and daughters principal author. However, which attracts full attention among the researched families in the fact that the domestic violence rupture starts from the authors themselves, as they break out with the silence pact and start speaking about it, revealing the violence they have lived through and they have spoken out in a discussion group, constituted by women, which was dully made easy by a Non-Governmental Organization. The final considerations signal that: remaking their affection ties, reviewing and modifyind their familiar dynamics and breaking out with the domestic violence happened departing the silence pact rupture, as they establish relations further beyond their familiar living together.
