Câmara, Adriane Peixoto January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation aims to question the Sexy magazine as a script for the heterosexual masculinity. In order to do so, I selected the magazine’s twelve editions of the year of 2005. The theoretical referential of the work are the Feminist Studies and the Cultural Studies with a post-structuralist influence. This study works with a group of concepts, such as gender, sexuality, masculinity and representation. The resource that guided the approach with the empiric material was the analysis, along the magazine’s twelve editions, of everything that was shown to its male readers, such as reports about behavior, sexuality, trips, consumption, interviews, information on books, movies and DVD, besides the photographies of female nude, the main topic of the magazine. This work also looks at the relationship among the professionals who work in the magazine (men and women) and the possible readers, observing the development of a ‘teachinglearning’ relation that the magazine establishes with its male readers. This type of exploration of the empiric material, which looked for some regularities, enabled me to argue that the heterosexual masculinity - built culturally - is guided by the routes available in the market. In other words, the countless masculine magazines existent nowadays aim at the male entertainment, including the Sexy Magazine. There is a pedagogical relation with the masculine reader, a ‘teaching-learning’ relation concerning what means being a heterosexual man (in terms of preferences, including the sexual preferences), especially how he should behave sexually. Although there is an effort by the magazine in delimiting the spaces of the masculine and the feminine through the notion of essence, the senses attributed to what belongs 'essentially’ to the man and what belongs ‘essentially’ to the woman escape, especially when we analyze the women's places in the magazine. On the one hand, women occupy the center of the masculine erotic desires (especially top models, actresses or very young singers); on the other hand, journalists women wrote and guided not only how men should relate with other women, but also how men should behave sexually.

Historically, the psychology has being constructing normalizing theories and practices, dissociating itself from the local reality and neglecting, in its productions and actions, the critic problematic of sexuality and gender as fundamental categories for the comprehension of the subjectivities and its contexts for micro and macro productions. However, the feminism in Brazil and in the occidental world has being questioning, academically and politically, the enforced normalization on women and on the gender relations. Therefore, it’s aimed to understand the tensions and interfaces between the academic psychology and the feminism and gender studies in Recife, with a qualitative research based on the feminism. There were conducted five semi-structured interviews with five interlocutors that graduated or are studying psychology and product academically in the field of feminism or gender in Recife. The reports speak about the epistemological changes that allowed the forthcoming of academic psychology and the feminisms, the personal and professional experiences that took the interlocutor to the militancy or feminism study, the relation between science and militancy, and the process of local and worldwide circulation of the theories. Among the interviews, were analyzed local virtual publications in the two most important feminist academic journal of the country. The analyses intended to investigate the main produced themes and scientific paradigms that guide research and production. It was possible to comprehend that the circulation and migration processes of the interlocutors to other States and Countries made possible the meeting between the academic practices and the feminists and gender studies, The return of these people to Recife made possible a bigger dialogue between psychology, politics, feminism and gender, These discussions about circulation and production of theories and practices in academy make reference to the discussion of knowledge-power, strengthening the feminist critic about how the academic production is politicized and directed.

The Representation of the #Metoo Movement in Mainstream International Media

Nuraddin, Nabila January 2018 (has links)
The final months of 2017 have witnessed the birth of a movement, the #Metoo movement, which started after several Hollywood actresses have accused famed producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment. The movement is an ongoing prevalent phenomenon on social media where its aim is to demonstrate the frequency and widespread of sexual harassment in all sectors of work, whereas the movement Media has been widely reporting on the movement and has given a platform to several women to speak their truths. In my research, I aim to conduct a comparative study of how three mainstream media outlets have covered the moment on their websites. The media outlets chosen are Aljazeera, BBC and CNN. The theoretical framework for the study will revolve around theories of representation, power, and to help in understanding how mainstream media represents the #Metoo movement on their news websites A total of 15 articles will be analyzed through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis. The study concluded that the #Metoo movement is represented through a constructionist approach, and there are minor differences between the three distinctive international mainstream media news websites.

Language requirements and constructions of belonging : A critical WPR policy analysis of the proposal for language and civic knowledge requirements for Swedish citizenship

Hartnor, Sofie January 2021 (has links)
This study provides a feminist critical examination of the proposal to add a language and civic knowledge requirement for citizenship acquisition and the ideas of belonging that are constructed within the proposal. The analysis has been made with Carol Bacchi’s ‘What’s the problem represented to be’-approach to policy analysis, examining what is represented as the ‘problem’ in the proposal, which assumptions and presuppositions that underlie this representation of the ‘problem’, what is silenced or unproblematized in this representation of the problem, an the potential effects that this representation of the problem can have. The analysis shows how the ‘problem’ in the proposal for language and civic knowledge requirements is represented as a ‘lack of knowledge and participation’ that’s been made possible due to a ‘lack of demands’. Further, the representation of the ‘problem’ constituting the ‘solution’ of the proposed requirements is individualized and the expected exclusionary effects of the proposal unproblematized. Finally, I argue that the representations of the ‘problem’ construct ideas of belonging which are predominantly about assessment of eligibility to be allowed entry into the ‘collectivity’ of Swedish citizenship.

Disrupting” the Broadcast: Female Showrunners as 21st Century “Fangirl” Feminist Rhetors

Diaz, Veronica 01 January 2019 (has links)
Despite being considered a female-driven discipline, previous scholarship and personal testimonies indicate that composition remains solidly a “boys’ club.” Popular media is male-dominated as well, resulting in on-screen representations of women that, written from the male perspective, tend toward one-dimensionality. Recently, more women are permeating Hollywood writers’ rooms and producing multi-layered stories that offset the aforementioned portrayals. This thesis examines how showrunners Marti Noxon, Jenji Kohan, and Shonda Rhimes have redefined female representation on-screen—and subsequently, perceptions of women in real life—by crafting nuanced, female-driven narratives. Elements analyzed include: themes present in Noxon’s Sharp Objects (2018) and Dietland (2018), Kohan’s Weeds (2004-2012) and Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019), and Rhimes’s Grey’s Anatomy (2005- ) and Scandal (2012-2018); critical reviews of said shows; interviews given by each showrunner; applicable social media posts; and variations in circulation and creative leniency of each televisual work. Existing literature on composition studies, public-facing work, rhetorical feminism, and gender in popular media is also explored. An apparent correlation exists between feminist archivists’ “uncovering” of women’s historical and rhetorical contributions, feminist rhetoricians’ “disruption” of academic and professional spheres, and female showrunners’ insistence on the legitimization of women’s lived experiences. Thus, Noxon’s, Kohan’s, and Rhimes’s contributions further “publicize” counterpublic, female concerns by disseminating these stories to large audiences via the accessible medium of television.

Women and the Men Who Oppress Them: Ideologies and Protests of Redstockings, New York Radical Feminists, and Cell 16.

Schaaf, Meggin L. 15 December 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The American civil rights movement created a ready environment in which exploited people protested their social status and demanded change. Among the forefront, women contended against their male oppressors and demanded autonomy. Ultimately, however, women disagreed amongst themselves regarding the severity of their oppression and the ideal route to implement change. Thereafter, radical feminism became a strong force within the women's liberation movement. Group members denied that capitalism oppressed women, and countered that women's status as a sex-class remained the essential component in their subjugation. To obtain true freedom, women had to reject the deeply ingrained social expectations. As radical feminists, Redstockings, New York Radical Feminists, and Cell 16 shared the goal of female freedom, but the process of acquiring freedom remained unique to each group. Nevertheless, although they focused on distinct issues, they each identified men as the source of female oppression and offered legitimate alternatives to social expectations.

The dissertation analyses how the pedagogical process of teaching and learning manual weaving occurs among women in the city of Resende Costa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The methodology of investigation was based on the participant research done through semi-structured interviews and participant observation. There were two immersions in that location in the years of 2011 and 2012, both in the month of July. The data analisys was based on Feminist hermeneutics and Popular Education. Among the results, it was observed that the process of artisanal production comprehends a series of techniques and knowledge automatized and invisibilized for basically being a female production, the complexity perceived by the one of who researches seems to disappear in the lives of the artisans, giving place to the invisible. This study concluded also, that one of the richest processes in the formation of the weavers takes place through the necessity and desire of sharing: the passing forward. A concept which we established as being a singular method in the singular action of keeping the tradion of weaving in a living flood of passing forward what the most experient artisans have and pass forward to other women who they chose to be the new owners of the techniques of weaving.
