Sedan 1990-talet har Sverige ett kunskaps- och målrelaterat bedömningssystem i skolan där eleverna blir bedömda och betygsatta utifrån ämnesplan och kunskapskrav. I samband med den nya skolreformen 2011 reviderades innehållet i dessa styrdokument. Studiens syfte är att belysa hur engelsklärare resonerar i sitt val av bedömningsformer för underlag vid bedömning och betygssättning i förhållande till ämnesplan och kunskapskrav i Gy11, samt att undersöka om det finns skillnader i lärarnas bedömningsarbete i jämförelse med Lpf94. Undersökningen har genomförts vid en gymnasieskola där kvalitativa intervjuer har hållits med fem engelsklärare som undervisar i kursen Engelska 5. Studien visar att bedömning sker kontinuerligt av lärarna, men att de har olika sätt att bedöma, dokumentera och använda sig av bedömning i lärandet. De fem olika lärarna väljer att använda ämnesplan och kunskapskrav på olika sätt men med konkreta, tydliga och individuella synsätt. Elevdelaktighet är mycket viktigt utifrån motivation och engagemang i ämnet, och lärarens syn på bedömning är central såväl som hur både ämnesplan och kunskapskrav används i undervisning och bedömning. Lärarnas intentioner är att få eleverna motiverade och att känna lusten att lära sig något som de kan använda i praktiken. Slutsatsen är att Gy11, med ny ämnesplan och kunskapskrav i Engelska 5, ger lärarna en utmaning med ett nytt sätt att tänka. Utifrån den formativa bedömningen behövs tydlighet, kommunikation, strategier, återkoppling, elevaktivitet med ett kvalitativt tänkande som en röd tråd. / Since the 1990s, Sweden has a knowledge and goal-related grading system in schools, where students are assessed and graded according to the syllabus and grading criteria. In conjunction with the educational reform in 2011 the contents of these documents was revised. This study aims to show how English teachers reason when choosing which assessment forms for assessment and grading to use in relation to the syllabus and grading criteria of Gy11. It also aims to investigate whether there are differences in teachers’ assessments in comparison with Lpf94. The survey was conducted at an upper secondary school where qualitative interviews were held with five English teachers who teach the course English 5. The study shows that the teachers do assessment continuously, but that they have different ways to assess, document and use assessment in the learning process. The five different teachers choose to use the syllabus and grading criteria in different ways but with concrete, distinct and individual approaches. Student participation is very important as regards motivation and engagement in the subject, and the teacher’s approach to assessment is central as well as how both substance level and knowledge is used in teaching and assessment. The teachers’ intentions are to get the students motivated and feel the urge to learn something they can use in practice. In conclusion, the Gy11 reform, with a new syllabus and grading criteria in English 5, gives teachers a challenge with a new way of thinking. Based on the formative assessment, clarity, communication, strategies, feedback and student activity, with a qualitative approach is needed.

<p>Riksdagen beslutade att från och med höstterminen 2008 införa skriftliga omdömen från första klass. Detta har lett till en samhällsdebatt kring frågor om hur de skriftliga omdömena ska utformas, samt om och hur lärarna bör bedöma yngre elever. Inom pedagogisk forskning har bedömning framhållits som en viktig del av lärandet. Istället för att mäta kunskap ska bedömning gynna och skapa mening för lärandet. Skriftliga omdömen bör genom formativ bedömning bidra till tydligare information för elev och vårdnadshavarna. Författarnas syfte är att skapa förståelse för vilken innebörd rektorer och lärare i undersökningen ger individuell utvecklingsplan med skriftliga omdömen, samt vilka förutsättningar som skapats för implementeringen. Tillvägagångssättet är kvalitativa intervjuer med rektorer och lärare. Undersökningen visade att samtliga rektorer och lärare framhåller att skriftliga omdömen förtydligar informationen kring elevens utveckling, samt att bra förutsättningar har skapats i form av tid och utbildning.</p> / <p>Parliament decided that in the beginning of the autumn semester of 2008, written discernments were to be implemented for every student from the first grade. This has led to public debate surrounding questions as how written discernments are to be designed and how teachers can and should evaluate younger students. In the field of pedagogical research the evaluation of students has been accentuated as a significant part of teaching. Instead of “measuring” knowledge, evaluations are meant to benefit learning and create meaning for teaching. Written discernments should through formative assessment contribute clearer information to student and caregiver. The purpose of the writers is to create understanding for the significance that headmaster and teacher, in the study, bring to individual development plans with written discernments and which conditions were created for implementation. The procedure is qualitative interviews with headmasters and teachers. The study showed that all headmasters and teachers call attention to that written discernments clarify the information concerning the students’ progress and that good prerequisites have been produced in the form of time and education.</p>

Principals' leadership for learning : formative assessment strategies in every classroomVillalpando, Suzanne Martinez 30 April 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore how school leaders address both the technical and professional socialization needs of teachers during the planning and implementation of student formative assessment in every classroom, an initiative that is often implemented as a means of gathering the data needed to support the academic needs of all learners (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Bolman & Deal, 2008; Heath & Heath, 2010; Leithwood & Seashore Louis, 2011; Wiliam, 2010). In order to determine school leadership considerations for addressing the technical and professional socialization needs of teachers during the implementation of student formative assessment in every classroom, two research questions guided the study:
1. What do teachers perceive to be their technical and professional socialization needs experienced during the planning and implementation of student formative assessment and how are these met?
2. What are the school principals’ perceptions of how they address the technical and professional socialization needs of teachers during the planning and implementation of student formative assessment?
Using a grounded theory approach, this qualitative study examined the perceptions of both teachers and principals through a multi-site case study design (Miles & Huberman, 1994). This design was chosen in order to gather insight regarding the perceptions and experiences of principals and teachers at three elementary campuses that have implemented student formative assessment in every classroom. The sites and participants for this study were purposefully selected. Data were collected through interviews and focus groups. In order to confirm emerging theoretical explanations, the researcher gathered additional data through a review of relevant documents, such as district and campus improvement plans.
The prominent technical needs identified by teachers in this study were the development of a campus-wide common terminology, participation in vertical teaming, and the maintenance of the support role of a campus instructional specialist. Furthermore, teacher participants identified their professional socialization needs as reassurance from the principal with new professional learning, a gradual pace of implementation for the student formative assessment initiatives, meaningful teacher-to-teacher interaction, open and transparent communication with the principal, and opportunities to participate in building cohesive grade-level teams. Principals perceived their technical supports as facilitating vertical teaming, providing a campus instructional specialist, embedding time for collaborative professional development, and setting clear expectations for implementation. Additionally, principals perceived their professional socialization supports for teachers as facilitating the building of cohesive grade-level teams, providing reassurance with new implementation, promoting open and transparent communication, promoting a gradual implementation pace and facilitating meaningful teacher-to-teacher interactions. / text

Over the past few years many changes have taken place in the content and presentation of teacher
education programmes in South Africa due to the paradigm shift from teaching to learning. As a result,
the primary learning environment for undergraduate students, the fairly passive lecture-discussion format
where teacher educators talk and most students listen, is contrary to almost every principle of an optimal
student learning setting. The current view in teacher education is that teacher educators should create
learner-centred and learner-controlled environments where student learning and success determine the
boundary.
The idea of focusing on learning rather than teaching requires that teacher educators rethink their role
and the role of students in the teaching and learning process. When focussing on learning rather than
teaching, teacher educators must challenge their basic assumptions about how people learn and what
the roles of teacher educators should be. It may be necessary to unlearn previously acquired teaching
habits, and rethink the role of assessment and feedback in learning.
Meaningful, formative assessment can play a key role in shifting to a learner-centred approach because
it provides important information to both students and teacher educators at all stages of the learning
process. To achieve this, it is essential that teacher educators do not simply add assessment as an extra
to an existing, non-interactive scheme of work, but that they integrate assessment effectively and
efficiently with their instruction. This requires a major shift in how assessment is planned and integrated
and a working framework for integrating assessment with instruction can be most valuable to teacher
educators.
The purpose of this study was to:
Determine the nature and scope of ESL teacher educators' tasks, within a Faculty of Education Sciences, at a tertiary institution. Determine the extent to which ESL teacher educators are implementing a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Identify the factors, if any, that impede the transition to a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Provide recommendations to facilitate the implementation of a learner-centred approach to teaching
and learning.
Determine how, when and how often ESL teacher educators are currently conducting assessment.
Identify possible shortcomings of the existing assessment system of ESL teacher educators.
Provide a framework for implementing assessment within a learner-centred approach to teaching and
learning.
A one-shot cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. The participants included all the
teacher educators (N=5) within the Subject Group English in the Faculty of Education Sciences .at the
Potchefstroom University.
Three data collection techniques were used in this study, namely a questionnaire, semi-structured
interviews and classroom observations. The purpose was to triangulate the data in order to get as
complete a picture as possible of the extent to which the teacher educators' teaching and learning
~racticesre flected a focus on learner-centredness.
The results of the study can be summarised as follows:
Descriptive statistics (means and percentages) were used to analyse the data. The data collected during
the interviews were reported as narratives.
The results indicated that the teacher educators in this study spent a significant percentage of their time
on preparation for class meetings and assessment. Each teacher educator taught for the full twelve
weeks of each semester and, therefore, did not have one week free of teaching the entire year.
Although the teacher educators embraced some learner-centred methods such as group work and
interactive class discussions, they still assumed most of the responsibility for the learning processes and
classroom behaviour of the students. They mainly focused on what to present in the contact sessions
and spent time organizing presentations of information rather than developing materials to facilitate
learning. The teacher educators often reverted to more familiar, traditional approaches and emphasized
the following issues as affecting the effective and efficient transition to learner-centredness: curriculum
coverage and lack of time, lack of proper training, size of student groups, other teacher educators'
cynical attitudes and students' attitudes towards learning. The teacher educators made use of a variety of assessment methods and assessed students continuously, but these assessments were not used for promoting student learning, but rather for grading purposes. Students received traditional feedback such as grades, marks and scores, but they seldom received feedback on what they did wrong and how they could rectify it. Overall, it was assessment of
learning and not assessment for learning.
A major factor impeding the implementation of a learner-centred assessment approach was the demand
formative assessment methods placed on the professional time of the teacher educators. In order to

Syfte och frågeställningar. Syftet med studien var att undersöka lärares och elevers syn på feedback i ämnet idrott och hälsa, samt om och i så fall hur denna feedback påverkar elevernas upplevda lärande. Detta skedde utifrån följande frågeställningar; Anser eleverna att feedback är viktigt för det upplevda lärandet i ämnet idrott och hälsa och hur tänker de kring detta? Anser lärarna i ämnet idrott och hälsa att feedback är viktigt för utvecklingen av elevernas lärande och hur tänker de kring detta? Har lärarna ett medvetet användande av feedback och uppfattar elever lärarnas feedback som konstruktiv och utvecklande? Använder lärarna formativ bedömning i sin undervisning och är det i så fall ett medvetet val? Metod. Detta är en kvalitativ studie med intervju som metod. Vid datainsamlingen genomfördes totalt åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer. Fem lärare med gedigen erfarenhet intervjuades enskilt samt tre elevgrupper bestående av totalt tolv elever. Urvalet skedde enligt bekvämlighetsprincipen. Vår teoretiska ansats grundar sig på tre lärandeteorier; sociokulturellt-, behavioristiskt- och konstruktivistiskt lärande. Vi har valt att använda grounded theory som analytiskt verktyg och teoretisk koppling till dessa teorier. Resultat. Studien visar att lärare och elever är överens om att nyttjandet av feedback är viktigt för att nå till upplevt lärande hos elever. Lärarna påstår sig ha ett medvetet, individ-, och situationsanpassat användande av feedback och detta speglar sig i att eleverna uppfattar lärarnas arbete med feedback som konstruktivt och framåtsträvande. Lärarna uppger att de känner sig trygga i användandet av formativ bedömning och att de litar på metodens funktionalitet men de efterlyser resurser för att kunna använda formativ bedömning i ökad utsträckning. Slutsats. Lärarfeedback tenderar att utmynna i en enkelriktad kommunikation och utgör således bara en bråkdel av lärandet som helhet i ämnet idrott och hälsa. Utöver att kunna ge feedback bör en skicklig lärare kunna skapa lärandemiljöer som även möjliggör för elevers lärande utifrån elevens egna erfarenheter och i samspel med andra elever. / Purpose and issues The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' and students' view regarding the role of ‘feedback in physical education’ and if such feedback affects a person’s perceived learning. This study was based on the following questions: do students believe that feedback is important for their perceived learning in physical education and what are their thoughts about it? Do teachers of physical education believe that feedback is important for the development of student learning and what are their thoughts about it? Do teachers have a conscious use of feedback and do their students perceive such feedback as constructive and stimulating? Do teachers use formative assessment in their work and if so is that a deliberate choice? Method A qualitative method was used for data collection throughout this study. Eight semi-structured interviews were carried out; five teachers with extensive experience and three student groups consisting of a total of twelve students. The selection of who to interview was made according to the principle of convenience. Our theoretical approach is based on three learning theories; ‘sociocultural’, ‘behaviorist’ and ‘constructivist’ learning. We have chosen to use grounded theory as an analytical tool and theoretical links to these theories. Findings This study shows that teachers and students agree that the use of feedback is important to experience learning. The teachers claim to have a conscious, individual, and situational use of feedback and this is reflected in the students' understanding of the work of teachers with feedback as constructive and progressive. The teachers say they feel secure in the use of formative assessment and that they trust the method's functionality, but they call for resources to use formative assessment to a greater extent. Conclusion Teacher feedback tends to result in a one-way communication and thus represents only a fraction of the overall learning in physical education. Beside the ability of giving the right feedback, a skilled teacher should be able to create a learning environment that also allows for learning based on the student's own experience and in their interaction with other students.

Over the past few years many changes have taken place in the content and presentation of teacher
education programmes in South Africa due to the paradigm shift from teaching to learning. As a result,
the primary learning environment for undergraduate students, the fairly passive lecture-discussion format
where teacher educators talk and most students listen, is contrary to almost every principle of an optimal
student learning setting. The current view in teacher education is that teacher educators should create
learner-centred and learner-controlled environments where student learning and success determine the
boundary.
The idea of focusing on learning rather than teaching requires that teacher educators rethink their role
and the role of students in the teaching and learning process. When focussing on learning rather than
teaching, teacher educators must challenge their basic assumptions about how people learn and what
the roles of teacher educators should be. It may be necessary to unlearn previously acquired teaching
habits, and rethink the role of assessment and feedback in learning.
Meaningful, formative assessment can play a key role in shifting to a learner-centred approach because
it provides important information to both students and teacher educators at all stages of the learning
process. To achieve this, it is essential that teacher educators do not simply add assessment as an extra
to an existing, non-interactive scheme of work, but that they integrate assessment effectively and
efficiently with their instruction. This requires a major shift in how assessment is planned and integrated
and a working framework for integrating assessment with instruction can be most valuable to teacher
educators.
The purpose of this study was to:
Determine the nature and scope of ESL teacher educators' tasks, within a Faculty of Education Sciences, at a tertiary institution. Determine the extent to which ESL teacher educators are implementing a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Identify the factors, if any, that impede the transition to a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Provide recommendations to facilitate the implementation of a learner-centred approach to teaching
and learning.
Determine how, when and how often ESL teacher educators are currently conducting assessment.
Identify possible shortcomings of the existing assessment system of ESL teacher educators.
Provide a framework for implementing assessment within a learner-centred approach to teaching and
learning.
A one-shot cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. The participants included all the
teacher educators (N=5) within the Subject Group English in the Faculty of Education Sciences .at the
Potchefstroom University.
Three data collection techniques were used in this study, namely a questionnaire, semi-structured
interviews and classroom observations. The purpose was to triangulate the data in order to get as
complete a picture as possible of the extent to which the teacher educators' teaching and learning
~racticesre flected a focus on learner-centredness.
The results of the study can be summarised as follows:
Descriptive statistics (means and percentages) were used to analyse the data. The data collected during
the interviews were reported as narratives.
The results indicated that the teacher educators in this study spent a significant percentage of their time
on preparation for class meetings and assessment. Each teacher educator taught for the full twelve
weeks of each semester and, therefore, did not have one week free of teaching the entire year.
Although the teacher educators embraced some learner-centred methods such as group work and
interactive class discussions, they still assumed most of the responsibility for the learning processes and
classroom behaviour of the students. They mainly focused on what to present in the contact sessions
and spent time organizing presentations of information rather than developing materials to facilitate
learning. The teacher educators often reverted to more familiar, traditional approaches and emphasized
the following issues as affecting the effective and efficient transition to learner-centredness: curriculum
coverage and lack of time, lack of proper training, size of student groups, other teacher educators'
cynical attitudes and students' attitudes towards learning. The teacher educators made use of a variety of assessment methods and assessed students continuously, but these assessments were not used for promoting student learning, but rather for grading purposes. Students received traditional feedback such as grades, marks and scores, but they seldom received feedback on what they did wrong and how they could rectify it. Overall, it was assessment of
learning and not assessment for learning.
A major factor impeding the implementation of a learner-centred assessment approach was the demand
formative assessment methods placed on the professional time of the teacher educators. In order to

Nine teachers are interviewed about their use of the method on 7-12-year-old pupils. Comparisons are made between the interviews and Swedish and international discussion on peer assessment. There are similarities between the practice of the teachers and what is said in the litterature about the method and its advantages and drawbacks. The teachers tend to emphasize the social aspects more, though. They also point to adjustments necessary to make the method function in groups of different kinds. Of feedback methods, they seem to prefer "Two stars and a wish" to others.

K-12 Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in a Rural School District on the High Plains of Texas: Mechanism for Teacher Support of Innovative Formative Assessment and Instruction with Technology (iFAIT)Talkmitt, Marcia J. 03 October 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the evolution of collaborative practices of PLCs as they emerge when using technology based formative assessment via iFAIT or innovative Formative Assessment with Instruction and Technology developed by the researcher using audience response systems and the online data compiler, Eduphoria!. This study used sequential explanatory mixed methods to address the problems that schools face when implementing technology based formative assessments to improve instruction and student achievement.
A survey administered in September 2012 and again in December 2012 provided a measure of teacher use of formative assessments, technology use in formative assessments, and perceptions of teachers using the PLC as a mechanism of support for technology based formative assessment. Training was facilitated by the researcher as PLCs worked together to develop, administer, and interpret formative assessments. Teacher interviews were conducted, and the study ended with the administration of the December 2012 survey and open-response questions for further qualitative analysis.
Quantitative data analysis was completed using ANOVAs to determine if there were significant differences of teacher groups (subject taught, grade level taught, and years of teaching experience) use of iFAIT. This data analysis also included measures of frequency and paired sample t tests between the September and December 2012 responses. Qualitative data was analyzed using hand coding, word clouds, and WordSmith Tools. The triangulation of qualitative data in the quantitative data provided a narrative to document what collaborative factors affected the use of iFAIT.
For school improvement and implementation of iFAIT, the study revealed that (1) with the right technology infrastructure, on-going professional development must be offered by administrators or sought after by teachers; (2) teachers must have strong beliefs in formative assessment and the technology that supports it; (3) open lines of communication must be supported through the PLC and administration; (4) teachers must see purpose in using revealing student data to drive instruction; and (5) PLCs must have common beliefs and believe that student achievement is connected to school improvement. PLCs should discuss data, share successes, and plan instruction through extended involvement in face-to-face and online venues as communities of practice.
