Favaretto, Antonio Carlos 30 March 2004 (has links)

In the course on "the hermeneutic ofthe subjet" (1982), Foucault approaches the theme of the access to the truth starting from the practices of self. Returning to the ancient thought, Foucault essay to show that, contrarily to our modero conception, the access to the knowledge of the truth is not given to the subject of full rigth. The access to the truth implicates the transformation _the "subject's convertion"- in his same being of subject. This transformation or "subject's convertion" to have acces to the truth implicate a labour, an exercise of self on oneself capable to accomplish the constitution of a self that make the experience of the truth and, at the same time, is transfigured by this experience. Starting from the Alcibiades by Plato where pratice of the "care of self' emerges for the first time as theme of philosophical reflection and, then, turning to the stoicism of the two first centuries of our era when the need to take "care of self' becomes an aim in itself marked by the pratice of a constant "convertion to onself', Foucault essay to show how access to the knowledge of the things and the ascetic pratice in the ancient thought were part of the "pratices of subjectivation ofthe truth," that is, of the constitution of a self that emerge as counterpoint to our modero "pratices of objectivation of the truth on ourselves". This ana1ysis enrolls in the genealogical project ofFoucault that allows to think the present and what is being done of ourselves here and now / Mestrado / Mestre em Educação

Pereira, Flavio Galvão 18 February 1999 (has links)
Orientador: Maria Jose R. F. Coracini / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-25T13:51:05Z (GMT). This research aimed at investigating the functioning of a group work developed by students in junior high school portuguese classes. We have dealt with the hypothesis that while working in groups, power, traditionally exercised by the teacher in the classroom, carne to be performed by students themselves, which contributed to maintain present the "image" of the teacher. Based on Michel Foucault' s perspective of discourse .analysis, we have investigated the conception of group work found in textbooks used to teach portuguese as well as curriculum parameters. Recorded classes were also analysed. Although the practice of group work is seen as a positive pedagogical altemative, able to provi de students with better interaction pattems, cooperation possibilities and, consequently, a better quality of the leaming process, data analysis have shown that this is not always reached. Sometimes, students ended up performing the functions of the teacher by controlling and watching their own classmates. We have also noticed that manifestations of cooperation within group work were put aside by dividing the task into parts each student had to do separately, which characterized group work as an "individual" activity. Some students have even made use of their classmates' texts as a model, which served to homogenize their texts / Mestrado / Ensino-Aprendizagem de Lingua Materna / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

Governing Islam and security in Tajikistan and beyond : the emergence of transnational authoritarian security governance

Lemon, Edward James January 2016 (has links)
Since 2002, the government of post-Soviet Tajikistan has deployed its security apparatus outside of the state’s territorial borders at least 49 times, intimidating, kidnapping and monitoring its citizens. I use the term transnational authoritarian security governance to refer to these border-spanning security practices. Although both secular and religious opponents to the government have been targeted, in this dissertation, I examine how the government of Tajikistan attempts to manage the threat from Islamic ‘extremism.’ I trace the emergence of the securitisation of Islam back to the Soviet Union, explore its consolidation in the years following independence in 1991, and how it has become operationalised in the form of transnational authoritarian security governance. I argue that the regulation of religious life in Tajikistan is based on an assertive form of secularism, which posits that religion is only safe if it is closely controlled by the state. In theorising transnational authoritarian security governance, I draw on the work of Michel Foucault. I argue that security governance is interwoven with relations of power. Governing Islamic ‘extremism’ in Tajikistan does not merely involve repressive life-taking sovereign power, it involves the moulding of obedient, secular subjects through disciplinary power and biopower. But as Foucault argues, where there is power, there is resistance. Those who are made subjects through security governance do have opportunities to resist it. Rather than being transformative and counterhegemonic, however, this resistance is momentary and anti-hegemonic. My findings are based on critical discourse analysis, a database of extraterritorial security incidents, semi-structured interviews, and extensive ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2013 and 2015 in Tajikistan and Russia.

Österlind, Malin January 2017 (has links)
Sport and sport participation is generally believed to positively contribute to society and individuals and have become important to welfare policy in the westernised world. Simultaneously, there has been an increased political and academic interest in turning sport policy, sport and sport participation into a relevant object of study and evaluation. The overall aim of this dissertation is to develop knowledge on contemporary sport policy and evaluation in relation to ideas about the social significance of sport and sport participation. The purpose is to critically examine how sport policy evaluations, their problematisations and solution proposals help to shape particular images of the good society, good sports and the ideal sport participant. Three research questions are posed: (1) Through what ways of thinking, speaking and knowing are societal and sport policy problems, goals and ideals defined? (2) Through what techniques, methods and strategies are solutions proposed to solve the problems and achieve desired goals and ideals? (3) How are different types of individual and collective (non-)soughtafter subjectivities anticipated and shaped? Drawing on the concept of governmentality, the study focuses on the governing of sport's and the sport participant's conduct, the political problematisations and rationalities regarding this conduct, and the strategies proposed to enhance this conduct. The governmental role of evaluation, knowledge production and scientific expertise is given specific attention. The gradual shifts in governmental rationalities and technologies, from a social form of governing to an advanced liberal form of governing, in the Swedish welfare state provide an overall framework of the study. Two kinds of empirical materials are analysed. First, final reports of sport political government Commissions of inquiries, published in the Swedish Government Official Reports (SOU) from 1922-2008, are analysed. Second, reports of sport political evaluations, published by the Swedish Research Council for Sport Science (CIF) from 2011-2015, are analysed. The analysis reported on in article 1 shows that citizens' 'good' and 'healthy' behaviour and bodies are a focus of problematisation throughout the studied period. In relation to this, sport is seen as an important tool and solution. Parallel to the increased critique of sport in contemporary times, a neo-liberal governmentality is embraced which in turn affects how 'problems' and 'solutions' are thought of in individualistic and rational ways. The analysis reported on in article 2 shows that the 2008 government Commission adopted two main 'problematics'. The democratic problematic concerned a commitment to issues of democracy and equality of opportunities and specified a particular problem of sport; sport excludes rather than includes. The health problematic concerned a commitment to issues of public health and physical activity and focused on a particular problem of the population: people are physically inactive and unhealthy. The argument being proposed in article 2 is that these two problematics construct the ‘problem’ of sport and the sport (non)participant in specific ways, drawing on particular forms of knowledge and discourse, with certain implications for the judgements made and the solutions proposed by the Commission. The analysis reported on in article 3 demonstrates three strategies of evaluation and governing: strategies of representation; deliberation; and reflexivity. The argument being proposed in article 3 is that these three strategies draw on different yet overlapping forms and methods of knowledge about sport participation and thereby also produce different (non-)sport participant subject positions. The analysis reported on in article 4 offers an alternative theoretical conceptualisation, based on governmentality, of the Swedish sports model and shows how sport policy, governing and power can be seen in the light of shifting forms of governmental rationality (i.e. governing from a social point of view to an advanced liberal way of governing). In conclusion, the analyses provided in the thesis as a whole suggest that processes of societal and political improvement in contemporary political governing of sport and sport participation, involves particular images of the good society, good sports and the ideal sport participant.

Bengtsson, Maria, Östlund, Nathalie January 2017 (has links)

Distopia : the utopia of dissidence and cultural pluralism in three generations of Dutch artists

Kruger, Runette January 2017 (has links)
This study develops a utopia, named distopia, positioned as a utopia of dissidence and cultural pluralism, also described as difference. The term distopia is a neologism formulated to invoke productive elements of utopia (such as a vision for an improved sociocultural sphere), with aspects of dystopia (namely, scepticism regarding the prevalent), whilst evading the potential naiveté of utopia as well as the hopeless resignation that dystopia can encourage. The term also denotes the political expedience of dissent. Utopia is analysed in terms of its form, content, or function, and according to its underlying sociocultural dynamic, which is, in turn, determined by intersecting permutations of space and time. This study furthermore categorises utopias as either representative of the same (that is, of the institutional, political, discursive, ideological and sociocultural status quo), or of the other. The other is defined here as an agent marginalised along the vectors of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Distopia is, accordingly, a dissenting utopia of the other, formulated to address, in particular, sociocultural exclusion and human rights violations linked to the parallel projects of neocolonial exploitation and of destabilising globalisation practices driven by neoliberal ideology. The utopias of three Dutch visual artists, namely Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005), and Jonas Staal (b. 1981) in collaboration with Moussa Ag Assarid (b. c.1975), are critiqued through the lens of distopia. This is done in order to assess the status of productive difference and engagement with the other in their respective utopias, created over the course of a century. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Visual Arts / PhD / Unrestricted

Lacerte, Marc-Olivier January 2015 (has links)

Investigating the parallels between disciplinary/bio-power and cyber-corporate empire

Taljaard, Darren January 2012 (has links)
Strong parallels exist between the formation of subjectivity through the disciplinary/bio-power technologies of the 18th/19th centuries – which Michel Foucault identified in his books Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, and The History of Sexuality Volume 1: The Will to Knowledge – and the 20th/21st century formation of subjectivity effected through Apple. Inc and Google. Inc operating systems and products. These systems and products similarly serve to canalize and ‗discipline‘ the pursuit and exchange of information, in a way that is constitutive of a new cyber-variant of disciplinary/bio-power subjectivity.
