A montagem da obra foi desenvolvida através da aplicação de estratégias transmídia com base nas explanações de Henry Jenkins e Stephen Dinehart, teóricos dessa nova forma de utilização da narrativa perante a era da “Cultura da Convergência”. O projeto apresentou ao espectador uma obra que possui vários “pontos de entrada” no universo ficcional da trama de Ibsen, acessíveis através de um conteúdo distribuído eletronicamente: vídeos, áudio-teatro, história em quadrinhos, um jornal fictício que contém informações sobre o programa da peça e um dossiê contra um dos personagens centrais da trama. A experiência também foi levada para um ambiente imersivo - o Second Life –, apresentando uma assembleia virtual que reuniu o elenco e o público atingido pela divulgação do evento nas redes sociais e sítio de hospedagem do material produzido. Com a aplicação dessa estratégia, o espectador é motivado a organizar mentalmente os fragmentos narrativos de situações pulverizadas através de canais de distribuições complementares, proporcionando a continuidade de imersão no universo ficcional mesmo após o término da experiência. / Using as a media-matrix “Ghosts – a family drama” (Gengangere, 1881) by Henrik Ibsen, this work analyzes the expansion of the fictional universe of a play by various media platforms. The composition of the play was developed through the application of strategies based on the explanations of Henry Jenkins and Stephen Dinehart, theorists of this new way of using the narrative according with the era of “Convergence Culture”. The project presented a work in which the viewer has multiple “entry points” into the fictional universe of Ibsen’s plot, accessible via electronically distributed content: videos, audio dramas, comic, a fictional newspaper which contains information about the program of the play and a dossier against one of the central characters of the plot. The experience was also taken to an immersive environment – the Second Life – featuring a virtual meeting that gathered the cast and the audience reached by the advertisement of this event through social networking and hosting website with the material produced. With the implementation of this strategy, the viewer is encouraged to mentally organize the narrative fragments of situations sprayed throughout additional distribution channels to provide continuous immersion in the fictional universe even the ends of the experiment.

Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen der zeitgenössischen kanadischen Geistergeschichten. Ausgangspunkt ist die außergewöhnlich hohe Anzahl an veröffentlichten Geistergeschichten, die es um bzw. seit Anfang der Jahrtausendwende gab. Die Besonderheit liegt darin, das Kanada gemäß seines Selbstverständnisses ein „matter-of-fact-country“ ist, das im Gegensatz zu seinem südlichen Nachbarn, den USA, weder Gründungsmythen noch eine reichhaltige Tradition an Schauerliteratur vorweisen kann. Dieses Phänomen wird unter einer ästhetisch-ontologischen Perspektive untersucht. Mithilfe romantischer Philosophie (v.a. Friedrich J. W. Schelling), aber auch zeitgenössischen philosophischen Ansätzen sowie traditionellen Mythen kann erklärt werden, dass die Aufklärung und der damit einhergehenden rationalen rationalen Weltsicht, die nicht zuletzt die Kolonialgeschichte bestimmte, in sich begrenzt ist – schließlich kreiert die Aufklärung selbst einen neuen Mythos: nämlich den von ihrer Allmacht. In dieser Arbeit wird dargelegt, dass es ein menschliches Bestreben ist die Welt eben nicht nur rational und logisch zu betrachten. In diesem Sinne verstehen sich, so die These, die Geistergeschichten als ein längst überfälliges Gegenspiel zum rationalistischen Selbstverständnis der kanadischen Kultur. In diesem Zusammenhang setzt sich die Arbeit mit theoretischen Ansätzen wie der Schauerliteratur und des Magischen Realismus kritisch auseinander und schlägt vor eine pantheistische Lesart zu entwickeln (pantheistisch, da in den Geschichten alle übersinnlichen Kräfte der Welt immanent sind). Diese Studie zeigt, dass die Geister andere Semantiken aufweisen als bei der konventionellen Schauerliteratur: Wo in klassischer Schauerliteratur die Geister eine Bedrohung darstellen, werden sie in den zeitgenössischen kanadischen Geistergeschichten als der Erde zugehörig aufgefasst. Es handelt sich also um eine lebensbejahende Form der Einschreibung von Magie in die (Lebens-)Welt, die zugleich dem menschlichen Bedürfnis nachkommt die Welt über Mythen – und keine rationale Sicht – zu erklären. Unter Betrachtung dieser Prämissen werden folgende Geistergeschichten untersucht: Tomson Highways „Kiss of the Fur Queen“ (1998), Eden Robinsons „Monkey Beach“ (2000), Kenneth J. Harveys „The Town that Forgot How to Breathe“ (2004), Joseph Boydens „Three Day Road“ (2005) und David Chariandys „Soucouyant“ (2007).

Being raised by a domestic worker: A postmodern study

This study focuses on exploring the relationship between domestic workers and the children they help to raise from the child’s perspective, using attachment theory (Bowlby, 1988) and psychoanalytic theory (referring specifically to Klein (1952) and Fairbairn (1952/2006) as some theoretical bases). Also, the concepts of the social unconscious (Weinberg, 2007) and social ghosts (Gergen, 2000) are used to provide a link to the relationship having social implications and functions in the South African context. All theories were used in an anti-essentialistic, reflexive and heuristic way, without reification or objectification of the various terms and concepts within the theories. Also, the paradigmatic point of departure for this research is postmodernism (Apignanesi, Sadar, Curry&Garrat, 2003), focusing on the contextual and socially constructed view of knowledge production. From this point of departure, the methodology is qualitative and the research design autoethnographic (Bochner, 1997; Ellis 1998; 2000; Muncey, 2005; Holman Jones, 2005). My own story is presented where I have used various data sources such as my own memories, a letter (Babbie&Mouton, 2008), and photographs which were analysed according to the principles of visual narrative analysis found in Riessman (2008) primarily. Further data was collected through the use of two radio talk shows, where participants were invited to share their stories with regard to being raised by a domestic worker. This data was analysed using thematic narrative analysis (Riessman, 2008), in which the narratives (kept as whole as possible) were analysed, each case in turn, using themes from the narratives themselves and deductive psychoanalytic themes. Some of the themes elicited were possession (where charges felt in possession of their domestic worker), absence (in relation to the child’s biological mother experienced both by domestic workers biological children and the domestic workers charges), loss (especially in relation to a caregiver), the male caregiver (a paternal figure to his charges), the politicisation of the relationship (the relationship between domestic worker and charge as product of a political system), reconciliation and action (a call for empathy and change), and an intertwining of cultures (where black and white, male and female, rich and poor exist inextricably linked with one another as a product of segregation). I have also maintained a consistent critical and reflexive stance throughout. In conclusion I have presented the contribution of this work to social science and society. Howard Barker fait ses armes de dramaturge en composant en 1971 une pochade sur Henry V de Shakespeare et signe trente ans plus tard l’un de ses textes les plus aboutis avec Gertrude – The Cry, variation sur le thème d’Hamlet. À la faveur de ces réécritures et de quelques autres (notamment Seven Lears en 1989), décrire le dramaturge contemporain comme le « Shakespeare de notre époque », expression attribuée à Sarah Kane, s’est rapidement imposé comme un lieu commun, relayé tant par la presse que par la critique. Pourtant, en dépit de certaines caractéristiques communes, leurs œuvres apparaissent d’abord comme radicalement différentes, ne serait-ce qu’en raison du statut marginal que Barker occupe au sein du paysage théâtral anglais. Dès lors, si Shakespeare se manifeste dans son œuvre, ce sera sous une forme altérée, méconnaissable, transformée, autrement dit sous forme de spectres. Pourquoi l’œuvre de Barker a-t-elle suscité de façon si insistante la comparaison à celle de Shakespeare ? Et que révèle cette comparaison, non seulement de la pratique critique, mais surtout des enjeux poétiques du théâtre de Barker ? Cette étude s’efforce de répondre à ces questions en examinant d’abord les modalités d’élaboration de l’œuvre de Barker, et la manière dont celle-ci place le spectre, figure majeure du doute, au cœur de son esthétique. Elle se penche ensuite sur les critères qui ont pu justifier le rapprochement entre les deux dramaturges, notamment l’histoire et l’écriture, pour montrer que Shakespeare est toujours convoqué sur le mode paradoxal du leurre, modèle avancé pour être mieux rejeté. De la sorte, elle essaie de dégager non pas les traits que partagent les deux dramaturges, mais la manière dont Barker tente d’exorciser la présence étouffante du dramaturge élisabéthain en élaborant une poétique singulière. / From his earliest efforts to his latest and most accomplished plays, Howard Barker has often confronted Shakespeare, be it with his irreverent parody of Henry V in Henry V in Two Parts (1971) or with his variations on Hamlet in Gertrude – The Cry (2002). These rewritings, along with some others (notably Seven Lears in 1989) have prompted many, both in the media and in academia, to call him, as Sarah Kane allegedly did, “the Shakespeare of our age”. In spite of a number of common features, their works do however appear as radically different, if only because of Barker’s marginal status within the landscape of contemporary English drama. If Shakespeare manifests himself in Barker’s work, it will therefore be in an altered and possibly unrecognizable form, in other words as a spectre. Why is it that Barker’s work has been so insistently compared to that of Shakespeare? What does this comparison reveal both about critical practice and about the aesthetics of Barker’s theatre? In order to answer these questions, this dissertation first examines the overall design of Barker’s work and the way in which it endeavours to place the figure of the ghost, as an embodiment of doubt, at its core. It then moves on to consider the criteria that have been invoked to draw a parallel between both playwrights, especially their focus on history and poetic writing as the basis of drama, to show how Shakespeare is always paradoxically summoned as a lure, an empty model that both suggests and contradicts modes of interpretation. In doing so, it strives to bring out not the traits shared by both playwrights but Barker’s effort to thwart the haunting and overwhelming presence of Shakespeare by giving birth to his own original voice.

A Hauntology of Sheila Watson's The Double Hook

Ce mémoire est une lecture hantologique du roman The Double Hook de Sheila Watson. Une telle lecture accorde une importance particulière aux fantômes et aux spectres qui se trouvent dans un texte ou qui le hantent. La hantologie étant un mouvement de pensée introduit par Jacques Derrida dans Spectres de Marx, cet ouvrage de Derrida se veut à la fois un point de départ et un site important de mon analyse auquel je retourne tout au long de ce mémoire. De plus, à travers les écrits de plusieurs spécialistes de la littérature canadienne-anglaise tels que Marlene Goldman, Margaret Turner et Cynthia Sugars, ce mémoire explore ce que le roman de Watson permet de découvrir à propos de ce qui hante l’imaginaire collectif canadien. Dans une première partie de ce mémoire, je concentre mon analyse sur les spectres textuels qui hantent les pages du roman de Watson. Les mythes autochtones, les récits chrétiens, les conventions du ‘Western’ et du roman régional, ainsi que les traces de plusieurs textes modernistes, semblent hanter la structure du roman et l’utilisation du langage qui crée l’histoire présentée par Watson. Dans le deuxième chapitre de ce mémoire, mon analyse se tourne vers les fantômes et les personnages fantomatiques qui existent dans le monde fictionnel créé par Watson. Les personnages tels que la mère de la famille Potter et Coyote sont fréquemment associés aux tropes du gothique et lus comme étant des spectres et ce sont de telles lectures qui ponctuent mon analyse de cet important roman. / This thesis consists of a study of haunting, both at the textual and fictional level, in Sheila Watson’s The Double Hook. In this hauntology of the novel, I explore the texts and cultural archetypes that haunt Watson’s novel as well as the ghosts, spectral figures, and haunting spaces and places represented in the novel. The theoretical movement of hauntology introduced by Jacques Derrida in Specters of Marx is a fundamental work in contemporary studies of the tropes of the Gothic and of a more generalized haunting that threatens notions of stability in our understanding of existence. Moreover, the haunting figures and texts in Watson’s novel subvert the heterogenous conception of a national discourse in Canada. The insights provided by scholars such as Marlene Goldman, Margaret Turner, and Cynthia Sugars, who are concerned with what Watson’s use of spectral figures in her narrative accomplishes in relation to writing the settler-colonizer nation of Canada, contribute to informing my argument about the place Watson’s novel occupies in the Canadian collective imaginary. In the first chapter of this thesis, I focus on the textual hauntings in the pages of Watson’s novel. Indigenous myths, Christian rituals, conventions of the western and regional novel, and modernist texts haunt the novel’s structure, content, and the language that constitutes it. In the second chapter of this thesis, I direct my attention towards the haunting and haunted figures that exist in the world created by Watson. In both chapters, my goal is to converse with the specters I see in the novel, to give a voice to what is not explicitly said and to find what lies between the fragments of Watson’s experimental prose.

Hauntology Man, a 48-minute documentary, follows former UNT Professor, Dr. Shaun Treat, as he leads a walking ghost tour of downtown Denton, Texas. As the expedition moves from storefront to storefront, each stop elicits a new tale. But, as Dr. Treat points out, the uncertainties of history are the real ghosts. That is, rather than simply presenting a "haunted history" of Denton, it's more accurate to say this movie's center resides at the precipice of a "haunting history." Not all ghost stories need spectres. Sometimes not knowing is ghost enough.

Based on a series of attempts to capture, focus and preserve memories and what has been lost, A Body of Ghosts evokes what moves in the destructive, towards oblivion or forgetfulness. Before I forget, I want to tell you about the loss of a close friend and about a time that changed us fundamentally. I want you to see the struggles that take place on the periphery of society. I want to talk about the transition, both physical and invisible, from boy to woman. This work is a construction containing our stories, Meril’s and mine, wherein memories and collected objects meet and reconfigure, the everyday and the suggestive intertwine. I find myself in the gap between dream and reality, a process that has led me to an obscure place where a distortion occurs; a place where time uncovers fragments from then and now. Emotions, situations and events have been loaded into these objects: an H&M jacket I wore when I got dumped at the age of 24, and after which I never felt the same kind of youthful, burning love. Casts of a vaginal dilator, at 5, 6, 7, 8, inches, to be used after gender reassignment surgery and forever more.  Thus objects undergo transitions into sculptures. Sculptures become symbols of crucial memories, repetitions and imitations of the original. Time has been left in the material, something non-physical placed in the physical.  My life mirrors Meril, but something remains out of reach. Screens of latex and metal shield my ambivalence towards this revelation of self. The camera inhibiting the act of remembering, keeping me from a long-lost friend. Photosensitive, only to be kept in the dark. Here, the works are partially concealed; the visitor must enter behind architectural partitions or into a hidden room in order to receive the whole story. The visitor is a voyeur outside the work but once inside it, becomes the observed. Behind each layer is a new fragment of the whole and thus the story unfolds. A Body of Ghosts in the void.
