Through analyzing the ads, discourse and semiotic, it was sought to understand how representations about rurality have evolved. Consequently, there were analyzed all 384 ads corresponding to the magazines of March, June, September and December of the years 1988, 1998 and 2008. Throughout the analysis and comparison of the ads, the heterogeneity of representations of rurality was evident by the mark of temporality. In other words, as the context changes, representations follow and express their modifications. This evidence confirmed the hypothesis of this research that advertising, over time, represents the multiplicity of identities of the new rurality and their social changes. At a starting point, in the '80s, rural world is presented as a space of hard work, which could generate wealth and achievements through technological transformation for the sake of production and productivity. Afterwards, it has evolved in the 2000s, into a representation of thisnew rurality as heterogeneous and with multiple meanings and activities, in line with what the academic discussions argued. We conclude that advertising, rather than being an agent of change as proposed by some authors, is presented here as a reinforcement of the dominant culture.

January 2010 (has links)
In all the experiments were used with roofing cement tile, new, no asbestos cement, with 4.0 mm thick. The first experiment was conducted at the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA), campus of São Luís, where were tested five types of coverage: 1 - no shading, no paint (STSP - control), 2 - with shading 0.05 m in height tile, unpainted (CT5SP) 3 - with shading 0.05 m in height tile with painting (CT5CP) 4 - with shading 0.08 m in height tile, unpainted (CT8SP) and 5 - with shading 0.08 m height of the tile with painting (CT8CP). Were evaluated the index of black globe temperature and humidity (BGTHI), the Heat Load (HL) and the specific enthalpy (H). The readings of meteorological variables (black globe temperature, dry bulb, wet bulb temperatures and wind speed) were measured during 12 experimental days (from nov. 4th to 15th, 2009) at 10:00, 12:00, 14: 00 and 16:00 hours. The type of coverage CT5SP had the lowest values for BGTHI (79,81) and H (78,84 KJ.Kg-1 dry air). The best result for CTRcorr (480,12 W.m-2) was presented by treatment CT5CP. The second experiment was conducted at Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), campus of Jaboticabal, where were tested the same types of coverages of Experiment 1. The collection and recording of meteorological variables were performed for 40 days (from feb. 13th to 24th, 2010), at the same times of Experiment 1. The type coverage that provided smaller results for the BGTHI (83,86) and H (86,41 KJ.Kg-1 dry air) was CT8CP. The lower HL (549,52 W.m-2) was verified with the coverage CT5CP. The third experiment aimed at assessing the effect of two types of shading screens (50 and 80%) on the thermal comfort... No. of bitstreams: 1 Arquivototal.pdf: 3643438 bytes, checksum: 6fd84d23d2fc6cbabb0990fff76832f1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-16 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / Introduction: The planet's climate change may raise the average temperature in all regions of Brazil. As there has been an increase in the insertion of technological innovations of communication and information (news ICT) in educational institutions, which can contribute to the increase in thermal radiation, it is therefore important to investigate how this increase in these environments may interfere with the comfort and performance of students. In the equation formulated by Fanger (1970), the thermal radiation factor is represented by the mean radiant temperature (Trm), but its impact on thermal comfort is often ignored. The globe temperature (Tg) is one of the variables of the equations for the calculation of the mean radiant temperature. It corresponds to the temperature that allows evaluating the level of thermal radiation of the existing surfaces in an environment where a significant difference between the globe temperature and the temperature of the air can demonstrate some increase of thermal radiation in the work environment. Objective: To investigate if the behavior of the globe temperature in relation to the air temperature (Tg-Ta), observing the variation of the mean radiant temperature, could have repercussion in the performance of students in intelligent teaching environments in areas of the Brazil's regions. Methods: The methodological procedures adopted in this work consisted of the following steps: analysis of thermal variables: Trm and (Tg-Ta); analysis of students' performance, analysis of architectural elements and construction of the mathematical model. The study was carried out in computerized laboratories with News ICT in the following institutions: UFPI, Teresina-Piauí (A); UFSC, Florianópolis-Santa Catarina (B); UnB, Brasília-Federal District (C); UNIVASF, Petrolina-Pernambuco (D); ICMC, São Carlos-SP (E); UFAM, Manaus-Amazonas (F); CE of the PM, João Pessoa, Paraíba (G). The students answered a questionnaire adapted from the Bateria de Provas de Raciocínio (BPR-5) on three consecutive days at different temperatures, while the thermal conditions were measured and the design and architectural elements were analyzed. Results: It was verified that in the three consecutive days, there was no heat exchange by radiation between the student and his environment in the laboratories of institutions C and F, demonstrating that in the other laboratories of institutions A, B, E and G there was heat exchange by radiation. It is noteworthy that in the laboratory of institution G this heat exchange was more pronounced, such that the mean radiant temperature at any given time exceeded the globe temperature at 2.25°Chcg/ 𝜀𝑔𝜎. However, their architectural analysis signaled that the design was adequate. So probably, the heat sources inside the laboratory should have provided increased thermal radiation, given that the number of students and laptops were representative. Thus, in the sense of confirming these findings, it was verified through the mathematical modeling that with each increase of one degree in the difference between the globe temperature and the air temperature (Tg-Ta), the students' performance in the computer laboratory of the Institution G decreased by around 29%. Therefore, the higher the mean radiant temperature, the higher the thermal radiation in this laboratory, and this increase may compromise student performance. Conclusion: Productivity may change due to changes in air temperature in air-conditioned teaching environments, as has already been demonstrated by international publications. In this specific case, if Tg >> Ta, the thermal radiation may possibly interfere with the performance of people present in environments equipped with technological innovations in communication and information (News ICT).

In this perspective it aims to encompass an interdisciplinary approach in understanding the geographical concepts of the globe, as well as the concepts inherent in the celestial sphere underlying the theoretical foundations of Euclidean Geometry, in order to present a logical and deductive structure of Geometry and Trigonometry in that sphere. This work complements the existing gap between the subjects of Geography and Mathematics in High School because it gives Mathematical supports to the lines (parallels and meridians) and geographic coordinates. Being therefore useful for undergraduate Mathematics students, the same way that teachers of Mathematics and Geography from High School and Elementary Education. Moreover, it also contemplates the sky watchers who wish to have a look at Astronomy from a point of view of Greek antiquity, since the study of Spherical Trigonometry was totally linked to the celestial study.

A cross-cultural study of consumer switching in the retail banking services sector

Siegfried, Frank January 2015 (has links)
The retail banking services sector, a key driver for global economic growth, faces drastic challenges, such as globalised competition and continuously changing customer expectations that call for an in-depth understanding of customer switching, particularly in Asia’s emerging markets. Research shows that minor reductions in switching can notably enhance profitability. Yet only insufficient or fragmented research to explain switching exists. For this study titled “A Cross-Cultural Study of Consumer Switching in the Retail Banking Services Sector” at The University of Manchester, completed in September 2014, Frank Siegfried identified the theory of planned behaviour as the most suitable framework, while Singapore served as a test bed in view of its diverse population. A qualitative pilot study was conducted (February to April 2010), consisting of 22 semi-structured interviews, in which a suitable definition of switching and a better understanding about the cross-cultural context of this study were developed. These insights were instrumental in the design of a new theoretical model, built on constructs that had not been combined in a single framework before, applying constructs of the theory of planned behaviour as the foundational framework, and subsequently integrating the concept of past behaviour, selected cultural dimensions from the GLOBE model and four distinct predisposing and precipitating factors. Next, a quantitative study was conducted (January to May 2013) and, after data cleaning, a quasi-representative sample of 1,431 cases was subjected to analysis. For comparability with other studies, both regression analysis (RA) and structural equation modelling (SEM) were performed. Notable results that were consistent in RA and SEM include: Attitude towards switching (attitude) successfully explained switching intention. Subjective norms had a positive effect on attitude, which implied a mediated effect of subjective norms on switching intention. Contradicting the initial hypothesis, a significant effect of perceived behavioural control on switching intention was negative. Past behaviour had a significant, but weak positive effect on attitude and switching intention, as well as an indirect positive effect on switching intention, mediated by attitude. Lack of trust positively affected switching intention. Service failure had a strong positive effect on switching intention, with perceived behavioural control moderating this effect. Performance orientation had a moderately strong effect on perceived behavioural control. High in-group collectivism negatively affected service failure. These results constitute the new Comprehensive Banking Service Switching Model (CBSSM). Interestingly, a large number of constructs and construct paths that played an important role in the literature could not be confirmed as significant contributors to the model. Overall, tests of model fit still showed a significant contribution of the proposed extensions to the foundational model. Weighting the importance of various constructs in a single framework enhances the understanding of switching of retail banking services in Singapore and offers new insights for strategic planning, particularly in the areas of branding, marketing, service operations and human capital management. Theoretical, methodological and managerial implications are discussed in detail.

To interpret and understand globes and maps : Students comprehension of the earth

Cedervall, Therese January 2020 (has links)
Nyckelord: Jordglob, karta, jordklot, abstrakt, begrepp, geografi, sociokulturellt perspektiv, stadieteori. / Children’s understanding of globes and maps have been an area of research for decades. A large portion of this research looks at children’s ability to abstract thinking when it comes to the globe as a model of the Earth and what information children can read from this model. How children interpret other forms of maps is also a key area in this research. The starting point is usually either Piaget’s theory of stages of cognitive development, or Vygotsky's sociocultural theory where focus is put on the social environments the child is a part of. The purpose of this study is to highlight the ability students in the 3rd class has of abstract thinking when it comes to the Earth. Furthermore, how students, with the help of a globe and a world map, can explain geographical concepts and how their geographical knowledge can be highlighted through conversations about the Earth. This study has been conducted through qualitative interviews of eleven students in the 3rd class. The interviews were conducted in a small room where both a globe and a world map were present. The starting point for the questions were partly taken from the key content in “Lgr 11”, and partly from questions scientists have used in previous studies with children of corresponding age as the students in this study. The result of this study shows that a majority of the interviewed students have elements of abstract understanding when it comes to the Earth. With the help of a globe and map they could explain concepts and even prove knowledge in both geographical and natural science about the Earth. A conclusion that can be drawn about this is that students already in primary school can have basic, and in some cases advanced, understanding of the Earth. Comparative Analysis of Physiological Measurements and Environmental Metrics on Predicting Heat Stress Related Events

Barlow, McKenzie Lee 01 June 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Exposure to high heat and humidity can lead to serious health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and heat index have historically been used to predict heat stress events, but individualized factors are not included in the measurement. It has been shown that there is a relationship between cardiovascular measurements and heat stress, which could be used to measure heat stress risk on an individual level. Research has been done to find relationships between cardiovascular metrics in a workplace environment, however the study did not include the use of a controlled environment as a baseline. This study provides measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), heart rate, body core temperature, and blood pressure in a controlled environment when human subjects are exposed to high heat and humidity. Thirty subjects (n=17 females, 13 males) were asked to self-express their activity level (active vs. sedentary), gender, and age. The subjects performed a 30-minute moderate exercise routine on a stationary stepper machine in a heated environmental chamber (average WBGT of 26ºC). TEWL, heart rate, tympanic temperature, and blood pressure were recorded at every 10-minute increment of the exercise protocol per subject. The data was analyzed using JMP® software to find significant (P

Investigation of Key Performance Indicators for Multi-Functional Arenas : A Case Study on Avicii Arena and Annexet

Lai, Kevin January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is a collaboration with Stockholm Globe Arena Fastigher AB (SGAF) and focuses on a case study involving the multi-functional arenas Avicii Arena and Annexet in Stockholm, Sweden. The objective of this study is to investigate Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that can sufficiently measure and evaluate monthly and yearly electricity, heating and cooling consumption while considering events and visitors. Data regarding visitor and event, electricity, heating and cooling were provided by companies in agreement with SGAF, which is handled in a Data Reduction. This study identified four different KPIs to evaluate energy consumption dynamics; KPI 1: Energy consumption per event day, KPI 2: Energy consumption per visitor, KPI 3: Load Factor and KPI 4: Occupancy rate. The results showed that the monthly KPI 1 and 2 values exhibited unpredictable fluctuations hindering its ability to assess energy consumption patterns. In contrast, the annual KPI 1 and 2 were able to effectively evaluate the energy consumption which uncovered that the electricity consumption in the venues is on a downward trend. However, the heating and cooling consumption remained stagnant during the same timeframe. KPI 3 and 4 displayed efficient operation of the energy systems. Moreover, all four KPIs revealed that the energy consumption is influenced by other factor beyond visitors and events. A subsequent Correlation Analysis unveiled two additional factors, outdoor temperature and event types, affects the energy consumption which suggests potential areas for future research.

Impact of the National Culture on Female Leadership Styles : How does Turkish culture impact on female leadership styles in Turkey?

Unal, Cansu January 2017 (has links)
The culture demonstrates itself in the shared values, attitudes, beliefs, norms and behaviours of people and it is distinguished from each other by differences in those shared meanings of people interacting. As culture is varied across countries, leadership styles are also varied across countries and are not exercised in the same way across different cultures. They are imported in accordance with the cultural environment in which they are perceived. Therefore, understanding the culture is significant in order to explain preferences of leaders concerning leadership styles. The main purpose of the present dissertation is to provide an overview of the relationship between Turkish culture and the way in which leadership is exercised by Turkish female leaders. The present study is completed in three steps in order to demonstrate that the existing relationship between the Turkish culture and leadership styles of female leaders in Turkey. In the first step, the study examined what culture is, what dimensions of the national culture are, what leadership is and how leadership styles are culturally-linked. In the second step, the paper investigated how female leaders perceive and exercise different leadership styles across different cultures. In the third step, the study researched what cornerstones of Turkish culture and how anticipated leadership styles of Turkish female leaders are shaped by Turkish culture.     The study followed a qualitative research approach based on the grounded theory. Ten female leaders coming from different backgrounds were interviewed in order to draw a holistic picture of the relationship between Turkish cultural values and leadership styles of Turkish female leaders. The findings of the study indicate that the Turkish culture has an influence on leadership styles of Turkish female leaders. According to the results, while Islamic values have no significant impact on leadership behaviours of female leaders, such cultural attributes as collectivism, high power distance, uncertainty avoidance and paternalism have a huge impact on leadership styles of Turkish female leaders.       The research examined only leadership styles of Turkish female leaders. Therefore, this study recommends a future research which will investigate leadership styles of Turkish males in order to understand whether gender has also an effect on leadership styles of Turkish leaders.
