Dynamically generated multi-modal application interfaces / Dynamisch generierte multimodale Anwendungsschnittstellen

Kost, Stefan 28 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This work introduces a new UIMS (User Interface Management System), which aims to solve numerous problems in the field of user-interface development arising from hard-coded use of user interface toolkits. The presented solution is a concrete system architecture based on the abstract ARCH model consisting of an interface abstraction-layer, a dialog definition language called GIML (Generalized Interface Markup Language) and pluggable interface rendering modules. These components form an interface toolkit called GITK (Generalized Interface ToolKit). With the aid of GITK (Generalized Interface ToolKit) one can build an application, without explicitly creating a concrete end-user interface. At runtime GITK can create these interfaces as needed from the abstract specification and run them. Thereby GITK is equipping one application with many interfaces, even kinds of interfaces that did not exist when the application was written. It should be noted that this work will concentrate on providing the base infrastructure for adaptive/adaptable system, and does not aim to deliver a complete solution. This work shows that the proposed solution is a fundamental concept needed to create interfaces for everyone, which can be used everywhere and at any time. This text further discusses the impact of such technology for users and on the various aspects of software systems and their development. The targeted main audience of this work are software developers or people with strong interest in software development.

Are icons pictures or logographical words? Statistical, behavioral, and neuroimaging measures of semantic interpretations of four types of visual information

Huang, Sheng-Cheng 12 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is composed of three studies that use statistical, behavioral, and neuroimaging methods to investigate Chinese and English speakers’ semantic interpretations of four types of visual information including icons, single Chinese characters, single English words, and pictures. The goal is to examine whether people cognitively process icons as logographical words. By collecting survey data from 211 participants, the first study investigated how differently these four types of visual information can express specific meanings without ambiguity on a quantitative scale. In the second study, 78 subjects participated in a behavioral experiment that measured how fast people could correctly interpret the meaning of these four types of visual information in order to estimate the differences in reaction times needed to process these stimuli. The third study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with 20 participants selected from the second study to identify brain regions that were needed to process these four types of visual information in order to determine if the same or different neural networks were required to process these stimuli. Findings suggest that 1) similar to pictures, icons are statistically more ambiguous than English words and Chinese characters to convey the immediate semantics of objects and concepts; 2) English words and Chinese characters are more effective and efficient than icons and pictures to convey the immediate semantics of objects and concepts in terms of people’s behavioral responses, and 3) according to the neuroimaging data, icons and pictures require more resources of the brain than texts, and the pattern of neural correlates under the condition of reading icons is different from the condition of reading Chinese characters. In conclusion, icons are not cognitively processed as logographical words like Chinese characters although they both stimulate the semantic system in the brain that is needed for language processing. Chinese characters and English words are more evolved and advanced symbols that are less ambiguous, more efficient and easier for a literate brain to understand, whereas graphical representations of objects and concepts such as icons and pictures do not always provide immediate and unambiguous access to meanings and are prone to various interpretations. / text

Σχεδιασμός και ανάπτυξη γραφικού περιβάλλοντος για επεξεργασία εγκεφαλογραφικού σήματος μέσω MATLAB / Design and implementation of a graphical user interface for the processing of EEG signal through MATLAB

Κουππάρης, Ανδρέας 27 April 2009 (has links)
The use of novel computational techniques in the analysis of encephalographic signals has given a huge boost to the study of neurophysiological questions. The use of such methods by researchers who have little knowledge of computer programming requires the development of a user-friendly graphical interface that includes tools for the automated application of these computational techniques. The present work presents the graphical interface developed at the Neurophysiology Unit of the University of Patras' Medical School for the support of EEG studies. The difficulties of the processing of EEG signals and the reasons that render the use of existing tools impossible or unfit are explained and I justify the choice of the MATLAB platform for the development of the environment. The course of the realization of the program and directions for its use are given in detail. The environment includes methods that import data from the Neuroscan recording system, select portions for processing, plot data over time, space and frequency, apply filters, analyze event-related potentials using average waveform and average spectrogram views, create virtual channels and cooperate with other programs, like using EEGLAB's technique of independent component analysis. The results of using the program in two laboratory studies are presented. First, it helped analyze normal sleep data, for the study of the relationship between two graphoelements of the second NREM sleep stage, the K complex and the sleep spindle. It was shown that the occurrence of a K complex affects the frequency of a spindle when they coincide. Next, in abnormal sleep data, for the study of possible changes of the thalamocortical pathway and sleep spindles on a child with medical history of childhood absence. In this case, the appearance of a rhythmic wave with attributes similar of a sleep spindle but different frequency of oscillation was shown, while at the same time, the incidence of normal spindles was significantly lower. Finally, the advantages of using this environment are shown and the fulfillment of the lab's goals and needs by the program, as well as possible future expansions, are discussed.

Automatizuoto grafinės vartotojo sąsajos mobiliuose įrenginiuose testavimo tyrimas / Research in graphical user interface automated testing for mobile devices

Račkauskas, Kazys 16 August 2007 (has links)
Naujuose programiniuose produktuose plačiai taikoma mobilioji įranga (mobilieji telefonai, delniniai kompiuteriai). Programinės įrangos kūrimo procese svarbią vietą užima testavimas. Dabartinių mobiliųjų įranginių apribojimai (darbo sparta, atminties kiekis, energija, ekrano dydis, platformų įvairumas) kelia naujas problemas programinės įrangos kūrimo procesui, tame tarpe ir testavimui. Testavimo proceso automatizavimas leidžia sumažinti bandymų trukmę, padidinti testavimo darbų apimtį. Programinės įrangos testavime mobiliems įrenginiams svarbu išskirti grafinės vartotojo sąsajos testavimą. Svarbi testavimo dalis – testavimas pagal specifikaciją. Šiame darbe nagrinėjamas grafinės vartotojo sąsajos automatizuotas testavimas mobiliai įrangai, nustatomi tikslai, galimi keliai jiems pasiekti bei galimas testavimo aplinkos praplėtimas testų generavimui pagal specifikaciją. / Mobile devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistance are widely used in new software products. Testing takes important place in software development process. Constraints of mobile devices (speed, amount of memory, energy, small screen, wide range of platforms) raise new problems for software development process including testing phase. Automated approach of software testing reduces testing time and increases testing range. It is important to distinguish graphic user interface as a special part of testing. The important part of testing is specification based testing. The aim of these master theses is to analyze automated testing of GUI for mobile devices, define testing tasks and enhance mobile device testing framework by providing means for test case generation from specification.

Modulation by fermented Mistletoe extracts, of IL-1b and TNF-a secretions after in vitro stimulation of murine macrophages.

Pequignot, Amélie 09 December 2010 (has links)
In this study, the ability of fermented extracts from mistletoe grown on three host trees to induce or modulate the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, like IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α has been explored. Applied for long times, cytotoxic, but not sub-cytotoxic concentrations of fermented mistletoe extracts induce the secretion of IL-1β. In these conditions sub-cytotoxic concentrations increase the IL-1β secretions induced either by LPS and ATP, or by imiquimod. When applied briefy at sub-cytotoxic concentrations, fermented mistletoe extracts can accelerate the secretion of IL-1β induced by LPS and ATP.

A calculation of colours: towards the automatic creation of graphical user interface colour schemes : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Moretti, Giovanni S. January 2010 (has links)
Interface colour scheme design is complex, but important. Most software allows users to choose the colours of single items individually and out of context, but does not acknowledge colour schemes or aid in their design. Creating colour schemes by picking individual colours can be time-consuming, error-prone, and frustrating, and the results are often mediocre, especially for those without colour design skills. Further, as colour harmony arises from the interactions between all of the coloured elements, anticipating the overall eff ect of changing the colour of any single element can be difficult. This research explores the feasibility of extending artistic colour harmony models to include factors pertinent to user interface design. An extended colour harmony model is proposed and used as the basis for an objective function that can algorithmically assess the colour relationships in an interface colour scheme. Its assessments have been found to agree well with human evaluations and have been used as part of a process to automatically create harmonious and usable interface colour schemes. A three stage process for the design of interface colour schemes is described. In the fi rst stage, the designer speci es, in broad terms and without requiring colour design expertise, colouring constraints such as grouping and distinguishability that are needed to ensure that the colouring of interface elements reflects their semantics. The second stage is an optimisation process that chooses colour relationships to satisfy the competing requirements of harmonious colour usage, any designer-specified constraints, and readability. It produces sets of coordinates that constitute abstract colour schemes: they de fine only relationships between coloured items, not real colours. In the third and fi nal stage, a user interactively maps an abstract scheme to one or more real colour schemes. The colours can be fi ne-tuned as a set (but not altered individually), to allow for such "soft" factors as personal, contextual and cultural considerations, while preserving the integrity of the design embodied in the abstract scheme. The colours in the displayed interface are updated continuously, so users can interactively explore a large number of colour schemes, all of which have readable text, distinguishable controls, and conform to the principles of colour harmony. Experimental trials using a proof-of-concept implementation called the Colour Harmoniser have been used to evaluate a method of holistic colour adjustment and the resulting colour schemes. The results indicate that the holistic controls are easy to understand and eff ective, and that the automatically produced colour schemes, prior to fi ne-tuning, are comparable in quality to many manually created schemes, and after fi ne-tuning, are generally better. By designing schemes that incorporate colouring constraints specifi ed by the user prior to scheme creation, and enabling the user to interactively fi ne-tune the schemes after creation, there is no need to specify or incorporate the subtle and not well understood factors that determine whether any particular set of colours is "suitable". Instead, the approach used produces broadly harmonious schemes, and defers to the developer in the choice of the fi nal colours.
