Na ausência de ações individuais voltadas para a promoção do bem comum, perde-se elementos fundamentais para a construção do capital social e para a vivência de felicidade / Many factors are equally important to the construction of both social capital and happiness in groups and communities. For instance, objective factors such as income, education, sanitation, living conditions, leisure, availability of essential services and social life engagement usually indicate high levels of civic engagement, trust, positive relations and satisfaction with life. In Brazil, the levels of many of these indicators are well below those of other countries in similar development stage. Such disparities are commonly justified by characteristics of the Brazilian society, such as social and economic inequality, with little being known about how subjective factors affect these indicators. This study thus intends to contribute to the understanding of how subjective factors influence the experience of happiness and the construction of social capital in Brazil, by investigating two neighborhoods characterized by low levels of social and economic inequality and with living conditions above the Brazilian average. Archetypical and symbolic elements borrowed from studies about Cultural Imaginary are employed in assessing how the landscape affects the way dwellers perceive their respective communities. This study also seeks to identify how the imaginary about the landscape interferes on the way dwellers think, feel and act, both in relation to their neighborhoods and to the way they interact with their neighbors. The obtained results suggest that cultural complexes deeply rooted in the Brazilian unconscious influence the way social relations are conducted. The cordiality complex emerges as hindrance to the development of interpersonal trust and to the deepening of social networks and positive relations, hence negatively affecting the engagement of individuals in collective life. In the absence of individual actions aimed at promoting common well-being, essential elements to the construction of happiness and social capital are lost

The judicialization of school relations: an inquiry into the production of teachers.Tiberio, Wellington 02 May 2011 (has links)
Teachers, beyond their formation courses, are produced day-to-day by the way they experience being teachers, a process that takes place within the very operation of educational institutions. This operation is based on a series of rationalities which delineate teaching, thus establishing references for a way of thinking and making oneself as a teacher. In present-day educational reality the wide usage of terms such as security, risk management, need for protection, damage, vulnerability, judicialization, among others, points towards the existence of intensive investment along the lines of control and vigilance policies. The present work has carried out an analysis on the mechanisms of what has been considered here as a juridical economy which pervades schools and is refined at its daily dynamics. This economy has been approached in its connections with the urgence for a search for welfare and happiness, one of the main governmental strategies of contemporary individuals. Within educational institutions this juridical economy produces subjects and a mode of relating to life. Therefore it produces important effects which we have tried to denature by approaching them from the viewpoint of the strategies of power. The main references used were the works of Michel Foucault (1926-1984) on relations of power and technologies for the production of subjects, having as a point of condensation his concept of governmentality. By entering the game of truth involving school education we have attempted to contribute in a particular manner towards hindering some of the effects of power that true discourses produce on education, school, teachers etc. Besides a mere negative action, such an initiative might also be understood as a way to confront a suffocating situation where the excess of certainties hampers the action of thought. This situation occurs often in current school education as it assumes the form of a positive action that produces gaps, breaches and holes. One important consideration on what has been analyzed: in schools, instead of life forms strengthened by confrontations at the ethical sphere, what has been under production is life forms weakened by the submission to normative need and to the plots indispensable to selfprotection. This movement forms the basis of a process that narrows political action down to ensuring formality and individual convenience. Although without any claim to clarification, we have focused on inciting reflective thought, where what is at stake is courage.

Previous issue date: 2012-08-13 / In the book Contra Academicos by Augustine of Hippo (354-430), the discussion about truth is guided by a fundamental question: Can a man achieve wisdom and happiness while he seeks truth or only after he finds it? The interlocutors in this dialogue confront each other around this question. This dissertation aims at understanding the criterion for truth presented in "Contra Academicos‖ and contextualizing/analyzing the philosophical sources that influenced Augustine s intellectual evolution, which required a thorough analysis of his work. The theme for discussion in "Contra Academicos‖ is a relevant problem until today, thus deserving serious debates about the questions it brings. Seeking truth is not a banal or shallow issue, but a necessary and fundamental one. The discussions presented in this book bring the philosophical path followed by Augustin into discussion. Path that started in a meeting with his own self in order to find the truth that dwells inside men. In this search, Augustin walks a path that could not be explained logically, but that concerns his soteriological project, which pushes him through Manichaeism, Neoplatonism and skepticism until he finally reaches Christianity. While passing through skepticism, he has contact with academic skepticism, fruit of confrontation between two Hellenistic schools Academy and Stoa about the criterion of truth. In this confrontation, the Stoic show an unquestionable criterion of truth, while the Academic emphasize impossibility of men to reach truth. As a result, in Contra Academicos Augustin attempts to refute the Academic arguments that had discouraged him from finding truth. He does it in order to reveal the theoretical frailty of those arguments and show that truth can be achieved by men. This truth is Christ, identified by God s wisdom and power.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-26 / Happiness is desired and it s a goal and despite being subjective, it can be
measured. Some researchers defined it as the way someone evaluates his life in a
general manner besides his economic, health and social status. Nowadays there is a
search for the best way to measure it. The first attempt had occurred at Far East, in
Bhutan, during the 70 s. Today, UN (United Nations) has an index, the HPI (happy
Planet Index) that can rank the countries according to the level of happiness and can
be associated with GDP (gross domestic product) and HDI (human development
index). In a small fashion, this concept is also utilized inside private organizations
and there are apps for tablets and cells phones for this purpose. In this research, the
authors evaluate the happiness perception level within two different groups of
professionals, the first working at the administrative section and the second involving
nurses. The two groups were composed by thirty subjects and work at a general
educational hospital. For this purpose, they used the Oxford Happiness Report index
with 29 items and the SF 36 report. By statistic analyses the authors correlated the
different aspects of happiness within the two groups. Using social demographic
questionnaire, the two groups were compared according to the happiness level and
then with the SF 36 results. There were no significant differences between the two
groups. The average happiness level were 4.70 for the administrative group and 4.52
for the nurse group. The Scale varies between 1, bad level of happiness until 6,
Hoje a ONU

Using computational psychology to profile unhappy and happy peopleSamson, Matthew James January 2019 (has links)
Social psychology has a long tradition of studying the personality traits associated with subjective well-being (SWB). However, research often depends on a priori but unempirical assumptions about how to (a) measure the constructs, and (b) mitigate confounded associations. These assumptions have caused profligate and often contradictory findings. To remedy, I demonstrate how a computational psychology paradigm-predicated on large online data and iterative analyses-might help isolate more robust personality trait associations. At the outset, I focussed on univariate measurement. In the first set of studies, I evaluated the extent researchers could measure psychological characteristics at scale from online behaviour. Specifically, I used a combination of simulated and real-world data to determine whether predicted constructs like big five personality were accurate for specific individuals. I found that it was usually more effective to simply assume everyone was average for the characteristic, and that imprecision was not remedied by collapsing predicted scores into buckets (e.g. low, medium, high). Overall, I concluded that predictions were unlikely to yield precise individual-level insights, but could still be used to examine normative group-based tendencies. In the second set of studies, I evaluated the construct validity of a novel SWB scale. Specifically, I repurposed the balanced measure of psychological needs (BMPN), which was originally designed to capture the substrates of intrinsic motivation. I found that the BMPN robustly captured (a) dissociable experiences of suffering and flourishing, (b) more transitive SWB than the existing criterion measure, and (c) unique variation in real-world outcomes. Thus, I used it as my primary outcome. Then, I focussed on bivariate associations. The third set of studies extracted pairs of participants with similar patterns of covarying personality traits-and differing target traits-to isolate less-confounded SWB correlations. I found my extraction method-an adapted version of propensity score matching-outperformed even advanced machine learning alternatives. The final set of studies isolated the subset of facets that had the most robust associations with SWB. It combined real-world surveys with a total of eight billion simulated participants to find the traits most prevalent in extreme suffering and flourishing. For validation purposes, I first found that depression and cheerfulness-the trait components of SWB-were highly implicated in both suffering and flourishing. Then, I found that self-discipline was the only other trait implicated in both forms of SWB. However, there were also domain-specific effects: anxiety, vulnerability and cooperation were implicated in just suffering; and, assertiveness, altruism and self-efficacy were implicated in just flourishing. These seven traits were most likely to be the definitive, stable, drivers of SWB because their effects were totally consistent across the full range of intrapersonal contexts.

Gender equality and happiness among South African womenRustin, Carmine Jianni January 2018 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Have South African women's lives become happier since the transition to
democracy? If they are, could this be linked to gender equality? This is the
central question of this study. This study explored a group of women’s
subjective experiences of gender equality, by which I mean equality on the
basis of gender; and happiness, which refers to women’s life satisfaction and
their affective state. It further explores whether gender equality and happiness
are linked. The study assumed that everything being equal, endeavours to
liberate women from patriarchy and towards gender equality enhance
women’s happiness. 1994 ushered in a democratic South Africa and
numerous legislative and policy changes were introduced that affect women.
Considerable gains have been made at the constitutional and political levels
for women’s equality and gender justice. This is reflected in the rankings of
South Africa on many different indices. Yet, we see numerous challenges
facing women including poverty and gender-based violence. This study
examined whether the presence of a range of policies as well as affirmative
and protective measures for women have impacted on how they experience
their lives. In particular, do they feel that they are happy and do they see
happiness as linked to gender equality efforts? Given the research question,
this study was grounded within a feminist framework. A mixed methods
approach utilising both qualitative and quantitative methods was employed.

A felicidade revisitada: um estudo sobre bem-estar subjetivo na visão da psicologia positiva / Happiness revisited: a study on subjective well-being according to positive psychologyGraziano, Lilian Domingues 03 February 2005 (has links)
Developed around the medical model, Psychology has directed its scientific efforts principally toward the study of the dysfunctional aspects of human behavior rather than toward the potential of the individual. This has created a disequilibrium in the field of study of this science which by focusing its attention almost exclusively on human problems has relegated themes such as Happiness to the so-called self-help literature. Based on the theoretical reference of Positive Psychology, this study seeks to understand Human Happiness from a scientific point of view. We judge this approach fundamental to the construction of a body of theory consistent with the theme and capable of helping in the development of preventive mental health programs. Therefore, we research the relationship between happiness and control "locus" in a sample of 106 university students, using the Spearman Correlation and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results indicate that the greater the internal control locus of the individuals studied, the greater their level of personal happiness.

Prospective First-Generation College Racial Minority Students: Mediating Factors that Facilitate Positive Educational Characteristics for College AdmissionParkinson, Lisa Michiko 01 July 2015 (has links)
First-generation college (FGC) students represent a small portion of the population of students on college campuses across the nation. Racial minority students are also highly underrepresented at four-year institutions. When one combines FGC students who are also racial minorities, they comprise an even smaller subgroup of students attending four-year college campuses. Research conducted to evaluate how FGC students perform their first year in college is prevalent. Additionally, research has been completed on factors that help predict a high school student's admission into and performance in college. However, very little research exists about factors identified in high school that may help strengthen a prospective FGC, racial minority, and high school student's admission into college. This study will utilize the RELATE questionnaire to evaluate individual characteristics or circumstances identified in prospective first-generation college racial minority students that may be potentially mediated for by high school counselors or college administrators to help strengthen college or university admission. Counselors or advisors could have an impact on improving the likelihood of college or university admission for this population by facilitating the process of coming to terms with family stressors and/or strengthening their flexibility or adaptability to new or different environments, learning, and people. Since the RELATE database does not include direct data regarding college admission, positive student educational characteristics such as sociability, calmness, organization, maturity, and happiness will be utilized to represent potential stronger preparation for admission into college. RELATE is a questionnaire designed for individuals in a committed relationship and provides important information regarding the individual, the partner, and the relationship. Research with the RELATE questionnaire data is generally utilized in family and social science domains. This study is unique since it accesses the individual instead of couple data for positive educational characteristics and research. This comparative study between prospective first-generation college White students and prospective first-generation college racial minority students is designed to assist educators in secondary and higher educational levels to better prepare prospective FGC students, particularly prospective FGC racial minority students, for college admission. Also, this study will distinguish between various characteristics that may assist college recruiters identify prospective FGC students who may be a strong fit for their institutions.
