A psychological enquiry into the processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and subsequent audience loyalty to a soap opera

De Kock, Jani 05 August 2010 (has links)
The research was based on a secondary analysis of a qualitative market research study conducted for the SABC on the soap opera Isidingo. The data used in the study includes 10 focus groups, five diaries of loyal soap opera viewers who were asked not to watch Isidingo for a week and keep a record of their experience, a focus group conducted with these viewers after the completion of the deprivation exercise, the market researcher’s field notes, the market research report and the academic researcher’s own reflective diary. The analysis was conducted within a hermeneutic phenomenological interpretive framework. A model for the psychological processes that culminate in positive viewing experiences and audience loyalty to a soap opera is presented. The model illustrates how viewers use soap world knowledge and real world knowledge to interpret the characters and storylines of soap operas and that the degree of enjoyment the viewer experiences from viewing, is dependant on the quality of the mental models formed of these respective components. The role that transportation, realism, social influences and timeslot play in the engagement process is also defined. The study illustrates a hermeneutic phenomenological research pathway for qualitative research and demonstrates how market research can be explicated for academic gain. The Donald VS. Sleepy Joe : En kvalitativ studie om hur Donald Trump och Joe Biden gestaltas i nyhetsartiklar under det amerikanska presidentvalet 2020 / The Donald VS. Sleepy Joe : A qualitative study about how Donald Trump and Joe Biden are portrayed in news articles during the 2020 presidential election

Holmgren, Joel, de Kriek, Janet January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine differences and similarities in the news coverage among the presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the presidential election 2020. We also examined how the candidates are framed in the different newspapers. In this study, similarities and differences regarding national variances in news articles from Swedish and American newspapers, also where a important part of the research. We did a qualitative text analysis based on 48 online articles from 6 different newspapers, the 3 largest from each country. The newspapers in question are USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times from USA and Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Expressen from Sweden. The result showed that there were more differences between the two candidates than similarities, in the way they were presented in news media. Donald Trump was often portrayed as the president that had a very harsh tone in his statements, and he was throwing out accusations towards Biden and the Democrats without having any facts to back them up. This made him look rather ignorant and sometimes even dumb. Biden, on the other hand, was portrayed as the one who is more fitting for the role as president, based on the writings about his previous experience, and many of the articles in the analysis portrayed him as a friendly family man. The focus point on both candidates during the election was who was leading the election, who was leading in which state, and how much that specific candidate was winning by. This was a topic that frequently showed up in articles from both countries and they often portrayed the whole election as some kind of contest or game, instead of focusing on what the candidates wanted to do and change about the country. The American newspapers more frequently wrote about the statistics when it came to who was leading the election, and their news coverage wasn't as clear as the Swedish news coverage. The Swedish newspaper often used secondary sources, for example from American newspapers, since they weren't able to be where the election takes place, which means they are re-telling the things that happened during the election. Other than that, there weren't that many differences between the news coverage in the US and Sweden.

“Varje dag är man kreativ…” : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om kulturskolelärares uppfattningar om kreativitet / Creativity : A qualitative interview of culture school teachers perceptions of creativity

Lund, Mattias, Mattsson, David January 2019 (has links)
From a hermeneutic perspective, the present study aims to examine how cultural school teachers perceive creativity and how these perceptions have grown. The background chapter presents literature and research that concerns the area of creativity. Seven informants were interviewed with semi-structured qualitative interviews. Interpretations of the transcriptions were made by applying the hermeneutic circle. The result shows common views of creativity. Creativity was perceived as breaking out of established thought patterns, creation and creating new ideas. Prerequisites for creativity were perceived to be safe environments and that the teacher is comfortable in his or her teaching profession. The view was that all pupils are creative, but the teacher needs to attract creativity. Some prerequisites for students were curiosity, interest and motivation. The result shows that the teachers' own education has been a source of how they perceive creativity. The most important factors were their teachers and to play music in ensembles with others. In turn this have influenced how teachers teach their students today.

Dialogic Interactionism: the Construction of Self in the Secondary Choral Classroom.

Younse, Stuart 08 1900 (has links)
Examined in this hermeneutic phenomenological study is a transformation in the researcher's choral music teaching in which students' abilities to construct self emerged organically from interactions, or dialogues, that took place among and between the students, the teacher, and the music being studied. To allow for such interaction to emerge organically and meaningfully, students and teacher both shared in the power needed to construct a classroom environment in which the localized issues of the classroom and the specific contexts of students' lived histories were maintained and encouraged. This process of interaction, based upon dialogue among and between equal agents in the classroom, is described in the study as dialogic interactionism. In order to examine the concept of dialogic interactionism, three constructs upon which dialogic interactionism is based were developed and philosophically analyzed. They include the construction of self through the construction of self-knowledge; the localized reference system of the classroom, and the issue of power. Each construct is considered within the context of extant writings both in general education and music education philosophy. Following the analysis, a theoretical description of the dialogic interactive choral classroom is given as well a description of how such ideas might be realized in practice. The study concludes with issues for further study.

Meaning, Perception and Decision-Making Examining Divisions of Housework in Newly Cohabitating Dual-Earner Couples

January 2019 (has links)
abstract: The division of household tasks has been studied extensively over the past fifty years, but there are unanswered questions about why partners still report imbalances. In this study, I employed a grounded theory research design to systematically collect and analyze data from newly cohabitating, dual-earner couples to generate theory. Three prominent theories (relative resources, time availability and gender ideology) served as the framework for this research. The purpose of this study was to expose the processes of meaning-making, interpretations and decision-making regarding divisions of housework and to determine if, and if so how, dissymmetry in household tasks are understood. My research questions addressed the meanings newly cohabitating couples ascribed to household tasks by and explored how they understand their allocation of these tasks. Eighteen in-depth interviews of six newly cohabitating couples were conducted. Results from the study highlight six major themes that contribute to couples’ meaning-making processes regarding housework performance: care, consistency, expectations, gender & upbringing, micromanagement, and task preference. These findings contribute to the broader body of housework literature by demonstrating how grounded theory methods may offer a unique approach to the examination of household task performance. Further, germination of the blended output theory of housework (B.O.T.H.) that emerged from this study could provide an opportunity to better understand changing family structures. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2019

Healthcare manager's awareness : an operational definition built on a combination of hermeneutic phenomenology and survey research / La conscience des gestionnaires de la santé : une définition opérationnelle basée sur une combinaison de phénoménologie herméneutique et de recherche par sondage

Lai, Quynh chi 08 November 2018 (has links)
Managers’ awareness is a crucial predictor of successful coordination. Awareness is proven to play a crucial role in the decision‐making process and performance. The major purpose of this thesis Healthcare managers' awareness: an operational definition built on a combination of hermeneutic phenomenology and survey research is to develop an operational definition of the concept of awareness in healthcare management. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one of introduction summarizes the main points about the background, the research objective and design. Chapter two of literature reviews provides an overview about the concept of awareness in healthcare and in some other domains. Chapter three of research approach and methods justifies our chosen methods. We adopt a combination of hermeneutic phenomenology and survey research in a sequential approach. There is no dominant phase and the role of each phase is clarified. For each phase, there are discussions of corresponding research traditions as well as the rationale for our specific choices. Chapter four of the results is devoted to presenting all the findings obtained by qualitative and quantitative treatments. Each of the two phases provides a specific type of knowledge with regard to the concept of awareness. Qualitative data analysis uncovers key proxies of the concept, including collecting the information, ensuring information verification, analyzing practices and integrative thinking and acting. The quantitative phase aims to facilitate the concept refinement applying exploratory factor analysis. We generate items, which clarify indicators of each proxy to design the survey questionnaire. The survey respondents are managers at some healthcare organizations in Vietnam. The results of exploratory factor analysis report a clear structure of four factors corresponding to the four identified proxies. The impacts of some sociodemographic characteristics on each proxy are also addressed. The results reveal that gender, healthcare management experience and organization type have no impact on the level of awareness. Meanwhile, the level of management might influence health care managers’ level of integrating. Senior managers are more likely to report a greater score in the component of integrating. The chapter five of discussion summarizes key findings and compare the elements of our definition with those of other definitions proposed by scholars in other fields. A discussion using qualitative data as a complement to quantitative findings is also provided. Other content of the chapter fiveis concerned with the strengths and limitations of the study. Finally, recommendations for future studies are also discussed.

The management of people, processes and places in the virtual workplace

Geldenhuys, Ilse 06 June 2011 (has links)
The traditional workplace evolved over time, moving through different waves or phases of change. The phases, although prevalent in different stages in different countries, have been characterised by various technological developments. The virtual workplace evolved as part of the Information Age or Fifth Wave, bringing with it its own unique characteristics and requirements. These unique characteristics, such as the speed at which information is communicated, crossing of time and space boundaries, social networks and requirements, such as sustainable high speed internet connectivity, are evident in the relationship between people, processes and the virtual workplace. This study explored the manner in which virtual workers executed their activities through the use of technology, the type of business processes supporting them and the challenges experienced by them. The proposed framework for the management of people, processes and places in the virtual workplace was subsequently derived. The framework has as aim to represent the relationship between people, processes and places components in the virtual workplace and in doing so providing a management framework supporting the virtual workplace. The people, processes and places components have been incorporated in the management, technology and practice sections of the framework, thereby providing a framework based on the relationship between people, processes and places. This study also developed the Extended Hermeneutic Circle of Learning which was used as guideline for the research conducted as part of this thesis. The deeper understanding created through the use of this research guideline assisted in providing structure to the research, thus enabling the researcher to derive the proposed framework for the management of people, processes and placed in the virtual workplace. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Informatics / unrestricted

Ecological Perspectives on Study Abroad for Language Learning

Bird, Matthew Thomas 07 April 2021 (has links)
The field of study abroad for language learning has drawn extensively on related fields such as applied linguistics and psychology to conceptualize learners' experiences, which then informs how practitioners go about designing programs for those learners. Research has encouraged practitioners to increase learners' access to the target language (e.g., through speaking partners, content courses), but it has also become clear that while access might be necessary, it does not guarantee learner engagement and growth. This dissertation explores two unique conceptual frameworks for understanding language learners and presents empirical research that demonstrates the kinds of findings that these frameworks can produce. The common subject of analysis involved the experiences of participants who struggled to engage in speaking during an Arabic study abroad program. The first framework emerged from a grounded theory analysis and characterizes participants' struggles as a clash of expectations that required negotiation. The findings fit well with a recent "ecological turn" in language learning, and a review of study abroad research from an ecological perspective suggested avenues of research that would further develop the field's understanding of access, engagement, and the learners themselves. The second framework built on interdisciplinary insights to present a hermeneutic moral realist account of the same participants who struggled to engage in speaking activities. This approach revealed a moral ecology of unstructured speaking with unique moral goods, reference points, and tensions that the participants had to navigate as they tried to find good speaking opportunities for themselves. This dissertation positions these findings within current second language study abroad experiences, offering an ecological perspective and recommendations for students and faculty alike.

Lived Experiences of Families of University Students Amid a Pandemic Response

Eide, Shaun 08 1900 (has links)
This study explores students' and their families' experiences during the pandemic response to COVID-19 by the higher education community. Using the hermeneutic phenomenological approach, we employed two open-ended surveys and semi-structured interviews of 16 parent-college student dyads (N = 34). The study draws on students' and parents' retrospective accounts beginning Spring 2020 through the Fall 2020 semesters. Families experienced a disruptive event initialized by the ebb and flow of information. Students' experiences varied based on their expectations and academic classification. The most consistent family challenges were the displacement of students and parents from their physical education and work locations while having to maintain student and occupation responsibilities. The educational experience was inconsistent and dependent on each professors' capacity to engage the students in the online environment. Students expressed feelings of loss of their student and educational experiences, but most students felt the spring courses prepared them to continue their education. Assignments due at random times and poor communication about expectations inhibit students from having dedicated time to interact and make memories. Most families adapted to the new normal by supporting the family members' identities as students and employees and ensuring everyone had the resource needed to succeed. Families experienced monotony and temporal disorientation. Families made meaningful memories through conversation, outdoor recreation, and other activities outside the daily routine. Family members provided feedback to one another to help the family maintain a stable system.
