Role peacekeepingu v řešení etnopolitických konfliktů: komparativní případová studie Makedonie, Bosny a Hercegoviny, Kosova a Kypru / The role of peacekeeping in resolving ethnopolitical conflict: Comparative study of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Cyprus

Šinkovičová, Martina January 2012 (has links)
Diploma thesis deals with the connection between the nature of implemented peacekeeping operation and possible positive output of this activity and thus with successful peacebuilding in the specific context of etnopolitical conflicts. Etnopolitical disputes constitute a vivid challenge aimed towards United Nations organisation. Mainly, because this organisation is one of the main actors of international system in finding solutions of etnopolitical conflicts and because United Nations also proposes concrete tools for their resolving - peacekeeping missions. We work with assumption that the nature of etnopolitical conflict and the nature of conflicting parties involved influence, to an important extent, involvement and impact of peacekeeping operations in resolving these conflicts. Diploma thesis, through the use of theories of origin and solvability of ethnic conflicts, creates the framework within which their more complicated solvability can be explained as well as inhibitors of theoretically successful models. Likewise, the typology of peacekeeping operations is defined and also narrower understanding of peacebuilding, as a set of political and security aspects, is described. Datas from four case studies then offer an opportunity to formulate partial endings and findings of examined causal relation. C lick...

Izolovaný Dubrovník: Varianty řešení dopravního propojení chorvatského území rozděleného oblastí Neumu / Isolated Dubrovnik: Possible transport connection solutions of the Croatian territory divided by the Neum area

Vedral, Martin January 2015 (has links)
The Master thesis deals with potential solutions of transport connection between two parts of the Croatian territory separated by Neum of Bosna and Hercegovina. The territorial separation became rather problematic after the Croatian entry into the European Union on July 1, 2013. Much stricter border controls between Croatia and Bosnia have considerably complicated traveling to the two parts of Croatia. In its historical section, the study explains why and when the unusual separation originated. Further, it deals with possible solutions that arise and assesses their economic and ecological demands while taking international law aspects into consideration. In the analytical part, the thesis aims to analyse the interests and goals of each player that directly influences the problem or the problem indirectly affects them. The players are the European Union, both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, local authorities, and Croatian political parties. The author concludes that the Peljesac Bridge, going from the Croatian territory to the Peljesac Peninsula, is the most likely solution out of all discussed options. To finish the bridge successfully, however, Croatia needs to get considerable amount of money from the EU as it does not have sufficient means to finance such a technology and construction...

Vliv interakce lokálních a mezinárodních aktérů na hybridizaci míru v průběhu a po skončení procesu post-konfliktního peacebuildingu / The Impact of Interaction between Local and International Actors on Peace Hybridization during and after the Post-conflict Peace-building Process

Knapová, Martina January 2016 (has links)
The thesis based on analysis of international community peacebuilding policy and consequent reaction by local actors assesses the influence of this interaction onto the liberal peace and changes in missions' operation. In accordance with O. Richmond the conclusion of post-liberal peace coming to the fore is accepted if only in contextually based forms. The extent of local ownership and the real agency of local actors is then dependent on the time of mission occurrence, power related interests of international community and the force and accessibility of structures that the international community tries to influence. Key words: peacebuilding, hybridization, local ownership, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone

Ethnic divisions in Bosnia-Herzegovina
 - The inequality between three different ethnic groups in the country and how media is used to portray them

Jurcevic, Karolina January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to observe how media and activism can be a part of the post-conflict peace building in Bosnia as well as to highlight the work and importance of NGOs in the country. This thesis will focus on how these NGOs work with media and activism in order to contribute to the post-conflict peace building. Further, it will analyze elements of civic activism as well as grassroots activism to see how the organizations implement these in their work. Eight interviews have been conducted with two participants from four NGOs in the country. The result shows that whilst ethnic divisions still largely characterize the contemporary Bosnian society, there are instances where ethnic differences have been disregarded. Further, the result shows that the everyday work of these organizations showcase a great example of how ethnic divisions can be combated and how social change can be achieved.

Consociational Democracies and Human Rights : A Case Study on Bosnia and Herzegovina

Mehmeti, Anes January 2023 (has links)
Power-sharing democratic models, such as consociationalism, are becoming a fundamental solution for divided societies. Consociationalism aims to divide power between the majority segments of a plural society using four characteristics: grand coalition, segmental autonomy, proportionality, and mutual veto. Bosnia and Herzegovina has used this to end the three-and-a-half-year war, which resulted in dividing the balance of power between the country’s three constituent peoples. One of the biggest downfalls of consociationalism can be attributed to its focus on group rights over individual rights. This thesis aims to understand the relationship between consociationalism and human rights, specifically minority political rights, by using Bosnia and Herzegovina as a case study. The relationship is established with the help of the Dayton Peace Agreement and cases from the European Court of Human Rights. The results demonstrate a distinct connection between the right to political participation for minorities and consociationalism, leading to a human rights violation.

Transitional Justice and Reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina : A comparison across time between the views of political elites and the general population

Budny, Paulina January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines views on reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and how these have changed over time, in an attempt to elucidate if transitional justice can promote reconciliation in the aftermath of ethnic conflict in systems that entrench ethnonational insecurity. Drawing upon literature from the field of social psychology, the paper argues that the work of transitional justice mechanisms is interpreted through a sociopsychological infrastructure of conflict which hinders the intended effects from being realized. Data from two levels of analysis is utilized, with statements made by political elites and population surveys in order to identify trends in the views on reconciliation. While there is limited positive change observed at the population level, the same cannot be said of the elites. Ultimately, the results suggest that, in the case of post-Dayton BiH, transitional justice has been unable to promote reconciliation in the aftermath of ethnic conflict.

‘Two Schools under One Roof’: How do students of different ethnicities experience partaking in this education system : A Case Study of Gymnasium Mostar

Marić, Robert January 2023 (has links)
Education is widely acknowledged as a catalyst for social change and progress within society. Contact theory supports this notion and suggests that fostering interactions between individuals from different groups can effectively reduce prejudice and promote peace. Building upon a unique set of data, gathered from 18 semi-structured interviews with students, parents, and relevant organizations, this study aims to investigate the experiences of students within the 'two schools under one roof' system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Specifically, it seeks to understand whether this system has any potential implications on the intergroup relations between Bosniak and Croat students and how their attitudes might differ. Recognizing the limited attention given to student perspectives and integrated educational efforts from organizations in BiH, this research aims to address this research gap and contribute to this field of knowledge.  The main findings show that there is a strong desire amongst students for further integration of education and a need for a unified curriculum. Findings also suggest that the school and external actors, except relevant organizations, show no support for such integrative actions. The paper furthermore argues for an urgent need to modernize the current schooling system in Bosnia and Herzegovina by incorporating integrative practices and fostering community-building projects and also calls for urgent actions from policymakers.

Muslimové, a ne mohamedáni! Ke kořenům bosňáckého národního hnutí v letech 1878-1918 / Muslims, not Muhammadans! The Roots of the Bosniak National Movement in 1878-1918

Mujanović, Mihad January 2021 (has links)
This thesis explores the transformations of the Muslim community (current Bosniaks) of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian occupation between 1878 and 1918. It examines the political, social and demographic changes in Muslim society - including the development of community life and religious, cultural and educational institutions - in the context of the formation of modern Central and South East European nations. Habsburg rule in the northernmost Ottoman province, in hindsight, stood at the beginning of a long, insecure and ambiguous but ultimately successful process of national self-awareness of the Slavic Muslim community of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Sanjak. The various chapters of this thesis broadly follow the standard framework of analysis of national movements in Europe. This work is theoretically grounded in the modernist paradigm connecting the national idea to changes in social, economic and political circumstances, the onset of modernity, based on both constructivist and instrumentalist theories. The thesis is largely relied on secondary sources when discussing these subjects as well as newspaper articles, memoirs, biographical essays, declarations and political proclamations. Keywords Muslims; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bosniaks; National Movement; 1878-1918
