[en] UNDERSTANDING WHAT STUDENTS DO NOT UNDERSTAND: APPLIED LINGUISTICS, EXPLORATORY PRACTICE AND LITERACY IN HIGH SCHOOL FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOMS / [pt] ENTENDENDO O NÃO ENTENDER DOS ESTUDANTES: LINGUÍSTICA APLICADA, PRÁTICA EXPLORATÓRIA E LETRAMENTO EM SALAS DE AULA DE LE NO ENSINO MÉDIO

GABRIELA BRITO BARBOSA 15 August 2018 (has links)
[en] This work aims to investigate the literacy difficulties presented by high school students of a state school located in a low income neighborhood of the Northern Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The author of this dissertation is an English language teacher in this context and became interested in the subject when she realized that the challenges faced by her students echoed news published in newspapers, electronic, radio and television portals about the weak performance of Brazilian students in such national and international examinations as SAEB, ENEM and Pisa. Seeking to understand and contribute to such a serious social situation, this qualitative-interpretative research is considered an Applied Linguistics study and was carried out with several 1st year high school English classes, in which the researcher was also the teacher. The theoretical framework was anchored not only in the concepts of literacy, both in the mother tongue and in the foreign language, as presented by Street (1984), Soares (1998) and Rojo (2009) but also in the ideas of Exploratory Practice (Allwright; Hanks, 2009). Thus, the teacher-researcher systematized her daily observations regarding the literacy work that she had been doing since 2010, from the perspective of textual genres as forms of life and social actions (Miller, 1984; Bazerman, 2006), with entering high school students. The reflective understandings achieved confirm the need for intensifying mother tongue and foreign language teaching and learning through a genre pedagogy and also suggest the importance of encouraging further studies on school literacy practices.

[en] POLYEDRA ARCHIMEDES: AN ENRICHING STUDY FOR SPACE GEOMETRY CLASSES IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS / [pt] POLIEDROS DE ARQUIMEDES: UM ESTUDO ENRIQUECEDOR PARA AS AULAS DE GEOMETRIA ESPACIAL NA REDE PÚBLICA

THAIS DE SALES RIBEIRO 23 May 2016 (has links)
[en] The main axis of this work is the inclusion of the study of Polyhedra Archimedes to complement the minimum content of space geometry, which is required for the development of this subject in high school at public schools. The work was developed to enhance the study of geometry, that despite its extreme importance has been losing ground for algebra within the minimum curriculum, imposed by the State Department of Education, and awaken in the student interest in the content to be worked. Divided into three stages, the development of the work started with the planning of polyhedra, including the concept of face, vertices and edges, straight positions and plane in space, construction of polyhedra, regular polyhedra and semiregular, spatial visualization, the Euler relationship and the demonstration of why there are only five regular polyhedra. The use of technological resources as an enabling tool for teaching, this first time, also had a great function, the pursuit of attention and interest of the student for the content. The second and third stages were exhibition of work at first with a view to, through art, expose quickly and succinctly, what are the polyhedra of Plato, the Polyhedra of Archimedes and its main features, seeking to reach an audience beyond the classroom. In the third stage, the student becomes the protagonist in the development of the workshop, held concurrently with the exhibition s content through art.

[en] EXPLORATORY PRACTICE, STRATEGIES OF EVIDENTIALITY AND SELF POSITIONING IN NARRATIVES OF PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN THE PUBLIC SYSTEM / [pt] PRÁTICA EXPLORATÓRIA, ESTRATÉGIAS DE EVIDENCIALIDADE E POSICIONAMENTOS DE SELVES EM NARRATIVAS DE EXPERIÊNCIA PROFISSIONAL NO CONTEXTO DE SALA DE AULA DE LÍNGUA INGLESA NO ENSINO MÉDIO DE UMA ESCOLA ESTADUAL

LUIZA DE ALMEIDA OLIVEIRA 02 June 2017 (has links)
[en] This research focuses on the reflexive process I undertook about my English classes in a Public High School, in Rio de Janeiro. The study aims at showing my own and my students understandings about the lack of motivation during my classes, in the second semester of 2009, and about the changes that began in 2009 and that continued through the first and second semesters of 2010. This is a qualitative and interpretative research, whose theoretical and methodological framework is based on the principles of Exploratory Practice and on the concepts associated with the Narrativization of Experience. The diaries were written in two different moments: the first one in the second semester of 2009 and the second one, during 2010. In both phases, reflexive writing is understood as action for understanding. The teacher s diary and the student s compositions, which are considered as instruments of reflexive research, were analyzed through evidentiality, modality in discourse, and construction of self. The analysis focuses on the construction of emotional, reflexive and agentive self as projected through a reportive epistemological stance. The study indicates not only a review and a ressignification of the teacher s as well as the students belief systems, both becoming more interesting and productive. Articulating evidentiality with positioning in narratives of experience was extremely significant for this dissertation as well as for the teacher in her practice.

The methodology of analysis is based on the Discourse Theory of authors such as Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe (2004; 2010), Laclau (1990; 2006; 2011; 2013); Lopes (2008), Macedo (2012), Mouffe (1993; 2003; 2005; 2007), Pereira (2009; 2010; 2012). The discourse, the empty and floating signifiers, the antagonism and the hegemony were elected as categories of discourse analysis. These categories were used according to the demands identified in the teachers´ discourses as well as in the re-searched documents. Seven interviews and fourteen questionnaires were accomplished with 21 teachers who work with this teaching modality with the purpose of perceiving the implications of this discourse in the teaching practice. The discursive analysis re-vealed, among other aspects, that the curriculum policy of the Professional Technical Education Integrated into High School Teaching is permeated by different epistemolo-gies, pedagogies, pluralism of values and cultures that are translated into a multiplicity of tension and subordination relations in search of emancipation in the space-time of such policy.

[en] PUBLIC POLICIES FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION IN THE 90 S: THE PROPOSAL TO IMPLANT A CURRICULUM AT PEDRO II SCHOOL RJ / [pt] POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS PARA O ENSINO MÉDIO NOS ANOS 90: TRAJETÓRIA DO COLÉGIO PEDRO II RJ

THELMA LUCIA PINTO POLON 17 December 2004 (has links)
[en] The official proposals from MEC (Ministry of Education and Culture) for Secondary Education in the 90 s , as well as the factors that influenced their elaboration, have been considered in this study to situate the process of curricular revision undertaken by Pedro II School , an important educational institution for its entailment to the central government since the imperial period. The main instruments used to collect data were: Interviews with school principals, members of the pedagogical staff and parents and pupils representatives , questionnaires for teachers and analysis of institutional documents from the process of elaborating and implanting the Political-Pedagogical Project.. in spite of the several academic department criticisms directed to the DCNEM , the sub structural and organizational conditions which have for many times become impediments to the development of the proposals, and of the inherent political-ideological impacts, we can affirm that this process was held reflecting the movement and attempting to overcome the propaedeutic perspective that prevailed. Everything indicates that this process was not better conducted, remaining restricted to a historically more operating group inside of the community, only due to the interference from the federal government, which, longing for satisfying the public opinion on the reform, made impossible the continuity of the debate and the magnifying of the understanding of central concepts such as competency-based curriculum and evaluation, making the construction of a differentiated curriculum remain predominantly a declared intention.

VIRGINIA MARIA CASTILHO RIBEIRO DE SOUZA 27 December 2007 (has links)
[en] This investigation aims at evidencing na attitude facing the knowledge developed in the Public School System, within the Middle School, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a Pedagogical complementary activity via the use of dynamic arttherapies, such as the emphasis on Neuro-Design integrating Social Design. Such new segment - The Neuro Design, aims at demonstrating, in a playful manner, the cerebral plasticity as a capacity of the Nervous System to alter functioning of both motor and perception systems, based on changes to the environment trough connection and (re)connection of the nervous synapses, thereby organizing and (re)organizing the information of motor and sensitive stimuli. (Relvas, 2005: 69-70) 1. Among other, used as channels, the biological elements, such as bamboo and flowers, by the language of music and dance.

The perceptions of principals on the influence of effective management of mandated change on the work performance of educators in the Vhembe District of the Limpopo Province.

Nemukula, Fhatuwani Joseph 15 August 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / Although the mandated change processes were intended to, among other things, improve the work performance of educators, they have, however, experienced a number of obstacles which are briefly discussed. Lack of participation by educators in the introduction and implementation of the change processes lead to resistance by some educators and this had a negative impact on their work performance. Lack of physical resources such as water, telephone lines, the interne and classrooms lead to overcrowded classes. Effective management of mandate change was hampered by the defiance of authority by some educators, who prevented circuit managers and subject advisors from visiting schools for purposes of professional development and guidance in terms of mandated change processes such as developmental appraisal. This had a negative impact on the work performance of educators. Educators had low levels of morale and motivation and this manifested itself in educators' high levels of absenteeism, lack of commitment and preparation. The Department of Education's lack of capacity to manage financial and human resources hampered effective management of the mandated change processes. Lack of coordination between the national department of education and provincial education departments resulted in lack of information needed by educators to implement the mandated change processes such as rationalization and redeployment of educators and curriculum 2005 and this had a negative impact on educators' work performance. This research employed the quantitative research approach to investigate the influence of effective management of change on the work performance of educators in the Limpopo province. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire which was distributed among the 274 total number of principals in the district. These schools wrote the 2005 senior certificate examination. 78.5% of questionnaires were returned. The completed questionnaires were processed by a computer programme (SPSS), after which research data was analysed and the following were the most important findings: There was a statistically significant association between the mandated change processes, IQMS, OBE, CASS, training and development and the quality of teaching as a work performance indicator. 88.5% of the respondents believed that IQMS had a significant influence on the current level of cooperation (which is high) to a large extent. More courses/workshops/seminars attended on the management of change processes had a positive influence not only on the ability of educators to manage the change processes but also on their motivation levels. However, the number of courses/workshops/seminars attended on the management of change had no influence on the rationalization and redeployment of educators. Mandated change processes are accompanied by reactions such as anxiety, fear, low morale and motivation which had a negative impact on the work performance of educators. The research results showed that educators should receive more intrinsic motivation. The necessary financial resources should be mobilized to ensure that there is adequate infrastructure and training for effective implementation of mandated change processes. Educators should participate in all phases of mandated change processes. Principals and other senior departmental officials should be made aware that effective implementation of the change processes do not take place overnight but need more time.

RAPHAEL CELESTINO DE ALMEIDA 18 March 2016 (has links)
[en] This study investigates the fate of high school students with an age-grade gap at a state school in Rio de Janeiro, analyzing the placement experience in two learning acceleration classes in the Roberto Marinho Foundation Autonomy Program. From a set of observations through interviews, it aims, on the boundary between ethnography and education, to get a closer perspective of these students to try to build knowledge from new angles. It investigates the meaning of the reflections that these students make about their educational delay and the transition to the accelerated program on the experience of studying in these classes and the symbolic and concrete gains they perceived. It identifies the main reason for school failure as the students behavior problems, an explanation internalized by the students themselves. It characterizes the acceleration classes as a space for socialization and behavior suitability at the expense of learning, which ultimately ensures subordinate inclusion in the school system.

An investigation into the types of classroom tasks senior secondary school (grade 11 and 12) mathematics teachers give to their learners : a case study

Shapange, Ismael January 2015 (has links)
This interpretive case study was undertaken to investigate the nature of classroom tasks that teachers give to their learners and to gain insights into how they choose these tasks. It was carried out at two secondary schools in the Okahao circuit of the Omusati region in Namibia. The schools range from Grade 8 to Grade 12. This study focused mainly on teachers who teach Mathematics at senior secondary phase (Grade 11 and 12). The research participants were of four mathematics teachers – two from each school. The study was designed around two phases. Phase one consisted of video-recording of lessons, and phase two consisted of interviewing the teachers. The main purpose of the study was to ascertain the types and nature of tasks that teachers give to their learners and to gain insights into how they chose these tasks. The research adopted a combination of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The study revealed that the participating teachers provided a near equal amount of lower level cognitive tasks and higher level cognitive tasks. It further revealed several factors that influence teachers when selecting the types of tasks they give to their learners. These factors include curriculum requirements, types of learners and their experiences, and learners’ contexts.
