Moderne Frau und in der Zeit der Industrialisierung / Modern Woman in the Industrialization Period

KOLÁŘOVÁ, Jana January 2011 (has links)
This thesis deals with an analysis of chosen books written by a famous German writer Thedor Fontane. Particularly, there are three main books I have chosen for my analysis ? Desire, Torment, Effie Briest and L?Adultera. There is a theoretical part at the beginning of my thesis. I have focused on dealing with specialized foundation. This represents later a basic part for a following analysis in the second, practical part. The second part, the analysis of books, includes general information about the book, brief content of a book and attributes of main characters. It is followed by comparison of historical reality with reality shown in the book. At the end of the whole thesis, there is the third part ? comparison of all three novels, generally as well as from the point of view of the main characters and the historical fidelity of books.

Teaching Russian classics in secondary school under Stalin (1936-1941)

Malinovskaya, Olga January 2015 (has links)
This thesis contributes to existing discussions of Soviet subjectivity by considering how the efforts of the Party leadership and state agencies to shape personal and collective identities were mediated by the teaching of Russian classics to teenagers. It concentrates in particular on the history of literature course provided by Soviet schools for the upper years. The study addresses the following questions: (1) How was literary expression employed to instigate children's emotions and create interpretive habits as a way of inculcating a Soviet worldview? (2) What immediate effects did the methods have on teenagers? (3) What were the long-term effects of this type of indoctrination? Answering these questions required close reading of material produced by official authorities, such as methodological programmes, teachers' aids, professional journals, and textbooks for class instruction, and also of material produced by those at the receiving end of Stalinist literary instruction, including both sources contemporary to the period under scrutiny (i.e. diaries written between 1936-1941), and later autobiographical material (memoirs, oral history). I argue that for many teenagers growing up during this period, indoctrination in the classroom blurred the boundary between reality and fiction, and provided a moral compass to navigate their social environment, to judge others as well as themselves along prescribed lines, and model their lives on the precepts and slogans of the characters and authors they encountered, particularly the 19th-century radical democrats. Retrospective accounts - interviews, memoirs, and written responses to questions - expose the durability of the moral and ethical lessons derived from Russian classics and reveal the enduring Soviet emotional complex formed by this literary instruction. Investigating the impacts of the study of Russian classics on Soviet recipients, particularly from elite groups such as the city intelligentsia, my discussion highlights the political traction of the literary in, for instance, forming feelings of group belonging and strong emotional responses to differing views. I conclude with a discussion of the relation of this to long-term political effects, including the re-appraisal, in the twenty-first century, of Stalin-era teaching methodology as an effective way of instilling patriotic sentiments in students, and the legacy of Soviet perceptions and practices in the expression of personal and collective identities in the post-Soviet period.

Writing in real-time, fictions of digitization : the novels of Don DeLillo and Dave Eggers

Muscolino, Stephen J. January 2017 (has links)
By tracking the intersection of contemporary fiction and the information technologies of the digital age, this thesis argues that the narratives being produced over the past ten years have evolved into a distinct genre of literature, one where the aesthetics of fragmentation and postmodern uncertainty must confront the new realities of a digitally saturated culture and society. In order to demonstrate this alteration in contemporary fiction, this thesis considers novels written within the past ten years that reflect on this new form of textuality, namely Don DeLillo’s Cosmopolis (2003) and David Eggers’ The Circle (2013). These texts demonstrate a paradigm shift in contemporary literature, a new kind of fiction in which American society, culture, economics, and politics, are all directly affected by various forms of digital mediatisation. These authors reflect an altered cultural zeitgeist within their fiction—writings which can be differentiated from the postmodern literary aesthetic—prompted by neoteric digital technologies coupled with the ubiquitous nature of the Internet. Although this topic is broad and covers multiple fields of scholarly interests, my thesis nonetheless concerns itself with a very specific line of questioning: will our authors have the imaginative wherewithal and social sensitivity to keep pace with changes brought forth by the explosion of information technologies? If so, what type of fiction is likely to emerge from this new digital environment? By taking a focused approach and using contemporary literature as representative of these massive social, economic, and political transformations, my research recalls Kurt Vonnegut’s “Canary in the Coal Mine” dictum: the writer has always been the first to notice the dramatic effects of technology on the individual and the culture at large.

In view of this finding, this research was developed with the objective of investigating the circulation and dissemination of prose fiction in the newspapers of São Luís and de Caxias, in the First Cycle of Literature in Maranhão (1832-1868), considering the Maranhão political-social context and the possibility of the formation of a Literary System of Maranhão, in this textual form, in order to know better the History of Reading and Literature, in this state, in the nineteenth century. It is a study in primary source, since newspapers were used; As well as bibliographical, since books, journals, theses, dissertations and articles were also searched, involving qualitative and critical-analytical procedures. The theoretical foundation is based on Cultural History, History of Brazilian Literature, History of Maranhão Literature, History of Reading and History of Newspapers. As for Cultural History, the notions of practice, appropriation and representation, studied by Roger Chartier (2001; 2002; 2004, 2005; 2011), were followed, according to which literary objects are studied as a result of the cultural practices of an era. For the History of Brazilian Literature, we take as reference the texts of Antonio Candido (2012), regarding the Brazilian literary context, in the nineteenth century. In relation to the History of Maranhão Literature, the main basis was the essay by Antônio dos Reis Carvalho (1912), who presents this literature by canonical bias; Followed by the study of Ricardo André Ferreira Martins (2009), about newspapers as sources of this literature, but also valuing the canon. On the History of Reading and the Newspapers, the ideas of Socorro de Fátima Pacífico Barbosa (2007, 2005, 2013), Márcia Abreu (2007), Marisa Lajolo and Regina Zilberman (1996) and Marlyse Meyer (2005) were used. Specifically, regarding the Maranhão newspapers, the main references were the studies of Joaquim Serra (2001) and Quincas Vilaneto (2008).

Both the Historical and the Literary knowledge relates to group and individual experiences from the present and the past. Since they reflect upon the past, they contribute to the construction of historical cultures. The extension, the length and the brutality of the First World War, characterized as a paradigmatic moment in the 20th century, has contributed for the construction of historical cultures that, aside their ifferences, question and search for a comprehension of the historical moment.

O Brasil na Internacional Naturalista: adequação da estética, do método e da temática naturalistas no romance brasileiro do século 19 / Brazil in international naturalist: aesthetic, thematic and methodological adjustments in Brazilian novels of the nineteenth century

Haroldo Ceravolo Sereza 09 October 2012 (has links)
This work attempts to read the Brazilian Naturalism as an important fact of this international movement and examines some of aesthetic, thematic and methodological adjustments it has been passed in Brazil. It considers that the model proposed by Emile Zola was adapted in Brazil by authors such as Aluisio Azevedo, Julio Ribeiro and Adolfo Caminha, among others. The novels written by these authors expressed the conservative economic modernization of Brazil in the late 19th century, building characters and plots that have left marks in the Brazilian literature that are deeper than is used to recognize. Novels like O cortiço, A carne e Bom-Crioulo touched on traumatic issues, such as slavery and sexuality of individuals, in a progressively bourgeois society, and meant an expressive modernization in Brazilian letters and mentalities.

Abstract: This study deals with the political and intellectual journey curriculum of the writer Adonias Aguiar Filho, author of important works such as The servants of the Dead, Lázaro's Memories and The alive body. These books subject analyze the society of Ilhéus area of cocoa production. Adonias Aguiar Filho was significant author of critical Brazilian literary and history between 1930 and 1980. Thus, he has a long and very busy career, because in addition to novels, he wrote Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo newspapers; he also directed relevant organizations related to culture and society, especially during the military regime in 1964. Although this curriculum, literary critics, historians of literature and Historians criticize the author, as immobile or inert profile in the Brazilian intellectual history. They called Adonias Aguiar Filho the "metaphysical" and "apolitical" writer true counterpoint to his countryman, the "Communist" Jorge Amado. In spite of this image crystallized in time, we focus on how Adonias energetically build up his own image as a writer, as well as he was very interested in the events of his time and region. We will analyze how his novel?s argument has been shaped by his time events. The study also try to demonstrate how art, history and politics have always formed the girders of Adonias intellectual and literary production, an issue particularly exposed on the long literary and political debate between the author and his constant "adversary" Jorge Amado. / Doutorado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Doutor em História
