Hope, religiosity and subjective well-being / Hermann Werner Nell

Nell, Hermann Werner January 2014 (has links)
This study explored the relationship between religiosity, hope, and subjective well-being among a group of 430 participants (28.8% male, 88.4% black, 8.4% white) residing in the Gauteng Province South Africa. The sample consisted of students (n = 210) as well as family members of these students (n = 220). A cross-sectional quantitative survey design was used. Data was gathered using the Adult Trait-hope Scale, a three item measure of religiosity, the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Descriptive statistics were computed in SPSS 22. Following this, correlations between all latent variables were calculated in Mplus Version 7.11, where after latent variable modelling was performed. During this process, an initial measurement model was specified, which was examined for goodness of fit, and compared against two competing measurement models. The best fitting model was then subjected to a process of model development, and subsequently re-specified as a structural model. The fit of this model was again assessed and compared to two competing structural models. Finally, indirect effects between religiosity, hope, and subjective well-being (comprised of positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) were investigated. The results revealed that religiosity was a significant predictor of both agency and pathway hope, and that the strength of this relationship was moderate in the case of agency hope, and weak in the case of pathway hope. In turn, agency hope predicted higher levels of life satisfaction and positive affect, and lowered levels of negative affect. However, with the exception of positive affect (with which it was positively associated), pathway hope was not related to any of the subjective well-being variables, suggesting that it is less significantly associated with subjective well-being than agency hope. The results of the mediation analysis revealed that agency hope acted as a significant mediator of the relationship between religiosity and life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect. Pathway hope mediated the relationship between religiosity and positive affect. These results suggest that the elevated levels of subjective well-being often found in relation to religiosity can at least in part be attributed to the fact that religion is associated with elevated levels of hope. The mini-dissertation is concluded with a chapter that outlines the conclusions and limitations related to the study, and on this basis, several recommendations were proposed for future research and practical application of the findings. / MA (Positive Psychology), North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2014

Experiences of employees in a non-profit organisation : the role of psychological capital / Lorette Theron

Theron, Lorette January 2015 (has links)
Research regarding employee well-being has generally been neglected in the non-profit organisation (NPO) sector. In many aspects NPOs function similar to for-profit organisations, but face challenges such as more financial restraints. Despite these difficulties, many people choose to work at and remain employed with NPOs. The NPO sector is expanding at a rapid pace and therefore needs to recruit and retain people more effectively without spending too many resources. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of psychological capital (PsyCap) in the decision to work in the NPO sector, and determine further reasons to choose and remain with this sector. An explanatory sequential mixed method design was used with an availability sample (N=108) of employees at an NPO in the social services sector in Gauteng and North West provinces. In the quantitative study, the Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ) was used as measuring instrument. The qualitative study entailed semi-structured interviews with participants with lower (n = 8) and higher (n = 8) PsyCap. The results indicated that NPO employees had a higher level of PsyCap. Differences with regard to their preference to work at an NPO were found between individuals with higher and lower levels of PsyCap, specifically pertaining to the reasons for joining an NPO, motivation, meaning, fulfilment and viewing their work as a calling. No clear inconsistencies with regards to rewards and the choice of working in the NPO, public and private sectors were found among individuals with higher and lower PsyCap. The main reasons influencing the decision to work at an NPO were altruism, type of rewards, job satisfaction, organisational factors, positive social influence, and experiencing their work at an NPO as a calling. The study addresses the lack of research on employee well-being in the NPO sector and extends PsyCap research to NPOs. Characteristics of employees who choose to work in NPOs are emphasised. Recommendations for the organisation and suggestions for future research are presented. / MA (Industrial Psychology)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2015

Die invloed van werksbegeestering op produktiwiteit in 'n agri-besigheid / Gideon Wilhelmus Badenhorst

Badenhorst, Gideon Wilhelmus January 2013 (has links)
The primary objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between work engagement and hope and to determine the possible impact on productivity within an agri-business. For the purpose of the study, we used two measures, namely: • The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale was used to measure work engagement • The Dispositional Hope Scale was used to measure hope. The questionnaires were completed by 341 respondents of the relevant agribusiness. The respondents represented all the divisions in the business. The research results showed that there was a significant correlation between work engagement and hope. Moreover, the literature review showed that work engagement and hope are playing a definite role in the productivity of any business. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Tro, hopp och kärlek : Berättelser om återhämtning från psykisk ohälsa

Pellas, Åsa January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the importance of hope, empowerment and stigma in a recovery process of mental illness. A qualitative method was used and individual interviews with participants from Dalarna University experience panel was conducted. To analyze the empirical data a qualitative content analysis was applied which resulted in the following themes; To be accepted, hope conditions and normalizing. The results showed that hope rather was a product of the recovery than it was a contributing factor. To be accepted promoted empowerment and protected from stigma. Normalizing factors like compassion and to emphasize the healthy sides promoted the empowerment and broke impotence. Thesis results can be considered as experience-based knowledge, which is a prerequisite for evidence-based social service where the user perspective is emphasized.

Transforming hope? : a theological-ethical vision, virtue and practice for the common good

Palm, Selina Hazel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this research project is to explore whether there are convincing, contemporary theological traditions within Christianity for conceptualising a socially responsible hope for our current times that can be envisioned, embodied and enacted in our world. It uses a theological-ethical framework of hope as social vision, virtue and practice to unpack the shape of hope systematically. It draws on diverse theologians such as Jürgen Moltmann, Albert Nolan, Walter Brueggemann and Flora Keshgegian as well as the Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper to offer multi-denominational and country perspectives on the topic that point towards the social practice of this hope as a central part of the mission of the church in our world today. This project examines a range of theological arguments for a world transforming Christian hope with concrete this-worldly social implications that is not just about ‘pie in the sky when we die’. It looks for a hope that can balance the demands of an active human responsibility alongside faith in a divine presence that is capable of being incarnated into how we see, are and act as humans in the midst of actual life as it is and not just as an abstract doctrine of belief for another world. It seeks for an ecumenically endorsed hope that can enable us to be active contributors to the wider human projects of social transformation clearly needed at the start of the 21st century enabling us to interpret Christian mission as hope in action within our world. / AFIKAANSE OPSOMMING: "Geen opsomming"

Is the organisational culture of Cape of Good Hope Bank Limited's Treasury and Investments Division ready for project management methodology?

Osborne, Vincent 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / Some digitised pages may appear illegible due to the condition of the original hard copy / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cape of Good Hope Bank limited is a subsidiary company of Nedcor Limited. The Bank was established in 1831, making it the oldest Financial Institution in South Africa. As a competitor within the financial services sector, the Bank has increasingly been faced with issues that include changing client needs, increased competition, and an ever increasing operating cost structure. The Treasury and Investments Division of the Bank, which is responsible for the funding side of the business, is primarily focussed on the receiving of deposits from the corporate and retail markets. The emphasis within this mini thesis, is within the retail sector, that of the investments received from 27000 individual clients serviced from 12 "Investment centers" geographically found within the Cape Peninsula. The activities within the Division are dynamic and require continuous change in order to remain competitive. The need to integrate activities and decision making across functional areas in order to gain synergy, has resulted in the use of matrix type teams that operate across functional units, using knowledge and expertise found therein. This approach has necessitated the introduction of the principles of project management as a methodology to implement the desired changes. The projects to date have had mediocre implementation, indifferent emphasis, no real ownership or vested interest, and a lack of follow through. The effect is compounded into a lack of delivery on expectations, and allows for wasted effort, time and at greater cost. In order to understand why the above issues are occurring, this mini thesis attempts to offer that there is an ideal "culture" within which project management operates successfully, and that the current culture of the division is different to the "ideal". The role of the leader, in shifting the culture closer to the ideal, is of paramount importance. It has been suggested that the style of the leaders need to be modified in order to become more effective as divisional change agents within the sphere of successful project management methodology.
