Integrating Sustainability Practices at Design Consultancies : A Case Study at Prevas AB

Working toward a sustainable environment and society has never been as high a priority as it is today. Numerous studies worldwide have concluded that if no actions are taken, it will be too late to ensure the survival of future generations. Sustainability entails fundamental changes in the way organizations and societies have been working, the way products and services have been produced, and the way environment, economy and society have been interacting with each other. Design consultancies operate at the initial stages of product development and can contribute significantly to design and production of sustainable goods. This thesis aims to understand and identify how design consultancies can be an active part of a system transformation required to achieve sustainability. It is a case study carried out at a design consultancy Prevas AB in Uppsala, Sweden. Sustainability is a complex topic and its integration into business practices is seldom easy. The objective of the study is to assist design consultancies in addressing this challenge of integrating sustainability. A comprehensive literature review on sustainability, sustainable design practices, role of design consultancies in product development is presented. A qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews is followed to understand the current situation in the market, the perception of sustainability by various stakeholders, and potential improvement areas. The thesis underlines the need and importance of making investments for integrating sustainability at design consultancies, along with some recommendations and practical suggestions to implement related practices. With an analytical approach, integrating sustainability at design consultancies is discussed as an innovation, and the business opportunities involved in adopting this innovation are identified. The results show that although design consultancies may not independently drive the sustainability in product development, they can surely play an important part in it and the current timeframe is critical for making related investments.

Modellering av fosfordynamik i Stora och Lilla Ullfjärden / Modelling of phosphorus dynamics in lake Stora Ullfjärden and Lilla Ullfjärden

Algblomningar är ett problem i många svenska sjöar, speciellt när cyanobakterier blommar och producerar cyanotoxiner. En förutsättning för algblomningar är en tillräckligt hög fosforhalt, då fosfor ofta är det begränsande näringsämnet för cyanobakterier. För att minska halten fosfor i en sjö och därmed förebygga algblomningar måste fosfordynamiken i sjön undersökas. Fosfordynamik beskriver hur fosfor flödar in och ut ur sjön, hur fosforn fastläggs kemiskt och biologiskt och hur det sedimenterar och resuspenderar. För att förstå fosfordynamiken i fjärdarna Stora och Lilla Ullfjärden, på gränsen mellan Uppsalas och Stockholms län, modellerades fjärdarna och deras avrinningsområden i HYPE. Först sammanställdes mätdata från fjärdarna, dels för att undersöka hur vattentemperatur, fosforhalt och mängd alger har ändrats över tid i fjärdarna, dels för att kunna kalibrera modellen så de beräknade variablerna blev så lika verkligheten som möjligt. Temperaturprofilerna visade att båda fjärdarna var skiktade under sommarhalvåret och att totalfosforhalterna i bottenvattnet periodvis var högre än resten av profilerna. Modellens temperaturstyrande parametrar kalibrerades för att den modellerade medeltemperaturen i fjärdarna skulle följa mätvärdena, vilket gav ett tillfredsställande resultat. Det fanns endast ett halvår med fosforprofilmätningar för vardera fjärden som kunde användas för kalibrering av totalfosforhalterna. Modellens totalfosforhalter kunde inte öka och minska på samma sätt som de uppmätta fosforhalterna, utan svängde mycket senare, oavsett hur parametrarna ändrades. En grafisk kalibrering användes för att modellen skulle ha lika stora toppar och dalar som mätdatan, även om de inte inträffade vid rätt tidpunkt. Utifrån modellerade vattenflöden och fosforhalter kunde inflödet av fosfor till fjärdarna beräknas. Ett platsbesök gjordes vid tre vattendrag och två sund i Stora Ullfjärdens avrinningsområde där vattenflöden uppskattades och vattenprover togs för att beräkna fosforflöden till och mellan fjärdarna. De uppmäta och modellerade värdena stämde inte så väl överens, men då endast ett mättillfälle fanns kunde inga slutsatser dras från detta. Uppskattade klorofyllkoncentrationer som baserades på satellitbilder erhölls och jämfördes med modellerade mängden alger. Satellitdatan visade två återkommande toppar för alger per år, en i april-maj och den andra i oktober. Modellen hade bara en topp per år under juli-augusti. Genom att ändra vissa faktorer i modellen kunde de styrande faktorerna för respektive fjärds fosforhalt bestämmas. Faktorerna som ändrades var temperatur, nederbörd, internbelastning och markanvändning. För Stora Ullfjärden gav alla faktorer en inverkan på fosforhalten, i synnerhet nederbörd. För Lilla Ullfjärden gav endast internbelastning en signifikant påverkan på fosforhalten. För att bättre förstå fosfordynamiken och algblomningar i Ullfjärdarna är det nödvändigt att fortsätta ta profilmätningar i fjärdarna, vilket SLU gör i Stora Ullfjärden under våren 2022. Fler mätningar i Lilla Ullfjärden på olika platser med olika djup vore också nödvändigt för att förstå hur internbelastningen ser ut i olika delar av fjärden. Med mer information kan ett informerat beslut tas för att välja eventuella åtgärder för att säkerställa en god vattenkvalitet framöver. / Algae blooms cause issues in many Swedish lakes, especially blooms of cyanobacteria that produce cyanotoxins. A high phosphorus concentration is a prerequisite for algal blooms, as phosphorus is often the limiting nutrient for cyanobacteria. To reduce the phosphorus concentration in a lake and thereby prevent algal blooms, there must be an understanding of its phosphorus dynamics. A lakes phosphorus dynamic describes how phosphorus flows in and out of the lake, how phosphorus is assimilated chemically and biologically and how it settles as sediments and resuspends. To understand the phosphorus dynamics in the lakes Stora Ullfjärden and Lilla Ullfjärden, on the border between Uppsala County and Stockholm County, the lakes and their catchment areas were modelled using HYPE. Firstly, data of measurements from the lakes were compiled to create an understanding of how water temperature and phosphorus and algae concentrations have changed in the lakes over time. The data was also used to calibrate the model so that the variable values would be like the measurements. The temperature profiles showed that both lakes were stratified during the summer and that the phosphorus concentrations at the bottom were periodically higher than the rest of the profiles. The model parameters that control water temperature were calibrated so that the modeled average temperature would be like the measured values, which gave a satisfactory result.  There was only half a year of monthly phosphorus profiles for each lake to use for the calibration. The modelled phosphorus concentration could not sync up with the measured phosphorus, it increased and decreased much later, regardless of how the parameters were changed. A graphical calibration was used so that the modeled phosphorus would have the same peaks and lows as measured values, even if model was out of sync. The influx of phosphorus to the lakes was calculated using the modelled discharge and phosphorus concentrations. Measurements of waterflow and water samples were taken in field at three streams and two passes in the catchment area of lake Stora Ullfjärden. This was used to calculate the flow of phosphorus into and between the lakes. The measured and modeled values did not coincide well, but since only one measurement was made nothing was concluded from this.  Chlorophyl concentrations in the lakes based on satellite images were obtained and compared with modeled algae contents. The satellite images showed two recurring peaks in for algaes, in April-May and in October. The model on the other hand only had one peak per year, in July-August.   By changing some selected factors in the model, the controlling factors for the phosphorus concentrations could be determined. These factors where air temperature, precipitation, internal loading, and land use. For lake Stora Ullfjärden all the factors hade significant effect on the phosphorus concentration, especially precipitation. For lake Lilla Ullfjärden, only the internal loading hade a significant effect.  To better understand the phosphorus dynamics and algae blooms of these lakes it is necessary to continue the measurements of phosphorus profiles, which is what SLU is doing in lake Stora Ullfjärden during the spring of 2022. To understand the internal loading in lake Lilla Ullfjärden it would be necessary to perform more sampling at different locations with different depths in the lake. More information would be useful to make an informed decision regarding any restoration measures to secure a good water quality in the future. / DiCyano

Bringing fuel cells to reality and reality to fuel cells : A systems perspective on the use of fuel cells

With growing awareness of global warming and fear of political instability caused by oil depletion, the need for a society with a sustainable energy system has been brought to the fore. A promising technology often mentioned as a key component in such a system is the fuel cell technology, i.e. the energy conversion technology in focus in this thesis. The hopes and expectations on fuel cells are high and sometimes unrealistically positive. However, as an emerging technology, much remains to be proven and the proper use of the technology in terms of suitable applications, integration with society and extent of use is still under debate. This thesis is a contribution to the debate, presenting results from two fuel cell demonstration projects, looking into the introduction of fuel cells on the market, discussing the prospects and concerns for the near-term future and commenting on the potential use in a future sustainable energy system. Bringing fuel cells to reality implies finding near-term niche applications and markets where fuel cell systems may be competitive. In a sense fuel cells are already a reality as they have been demonstrated in various applications world-wide. However, in many of the envisioned applications fuel cells are far from being competitive and sometimes also the environmental benefit of using fuel cells in a given application may be questioned. Bringing reality to fuel cells implies emphasising the need for realistic expectations and pointing out that the first markets have to be based on the currently available technology and not the visions of what fuel cells could be in the future. The results from the demonstration projects show that further development and research on especially the durability for fuel cell systems is crucial and a general recommendation is to design the systems for high reliability and durability rather than striving towards higher energy efficiencies. The Cinematisation of Computer and Console Games : Aesthetic and Commercial Convergence in the Film and Game Industries

This thesis examines the growing trend of cinematisation in computer and console games, where both visual styles and industrial practices are concerned. The ever-increasing runtime of cinematic cutscenes in games, and the stylization of game graphics in accordance with established film genres are of primary focus regarding the gaming industry's absorption and interpretation of cinematic visuals. Comparisons of film-game convergence are based on the proliferation of non-gameplay promotional trailers and their role in hype-generation; as well as game producer strategies of franchising, cross-promotion, and initial-sales business model. Comparison is thus accomplished with regards to a number of fundamental similarities in both industries' business and commercial tactics, as stemming from the risk and reward-based investment financing system prevalent in both industries. Finally, a selection of user and industry professional video responses to the aforementioned trends are examined, both for their value in counter-balancing the assumptions of success which often follow staggeringly high initial sales figures; and for their value in layering the depth of film-game convergence even further, as they respond to the recent, filmic trends in games using the very language of film.

Sverige anses vara en av världens mest avancerade IT-nationer, där användningen av IT ökar inom både den offentliga och privata sektorn. Företag inom IT branschen expanderar i en starkt föränderlig bransch. En rad olika faktorer har varit grunden till Sveriges position som IT-nation, bland annat en ingenjörs- och innovationstradition över en lång tid, även faktorer som den utbreda användningen av IT i samhället och en snabbhet att implementera nya innovationer. IT-branschen i Sverige utgör 4 % av de sysselsatta i Sverige där omsättning, såväl som antalet anställda, faktiskt ökat även under konjunktursvackor. Syftet med studien är att undersöka om svenska nyhetsmedier i större utsträckning publicerat nyheter om Apple än om deras konkurrenter på smartphone marknaden. For att lättare kunna genomföra studien ska dessa frågeställningar besvaras: Hur har Apple lyckats bygga upp en hajp kring sitt varumärke i Sverige? Har Apple exponerats mer i svenska nyhetsmedier än konkurrenterna på smartphone marknaden? På vilket sätt påverkar svensk nyhetsmedia bilden av Apple? De teorier som används i studien är innovationsteorin, dagordningsteorin samt konsumentbeteendeteorin. Inledningsvis sker en fallstudie där det via sökmotorn på DN och SvD nätupplagor har summerats ihop antalet ordträffar på utvalda ord. Baserat på resultaten av ordanalys utvecklas en semistrukturerad telefonintervju som genomförs med DN. Parallellt sker en semistrukturerad intervju med en anställd på en reklambyrå inriktat mot hur specifikt Apple har gått tillväga för att skapa hajp. Utifrån vår undersökning och analys kom vi fram till att svenska nyhetsmedier inte styrs av bakomliggande faktorer när de offentliggör nyheter om företag. Publiceringar sker baserat på deras uppfattning om hur det allmänintresset ser ut hos läsarna. Apple är väldigt selektiva med att släppa ut information gällande företaget och runt deras produkter, detta resulterar i ett intresse från pressen att först publicera information från Apple, motiverat utifrån ett allmänintresse i samhället.
