A study of implemented ISO 9000 quality management system with particular reference to small to medium size Hong Kong construction enterprises

Luk, Colin K. W. January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is a study of Quality Management, its use, effectiveness and acceptance by the construction industry. The objective of this research is to determine to what extent the Quality Management System (QMS) helps personnel at different levels of organizations perform their tasks. It also examines how the QMS assists them to meet the quality management expectations of their organization and to develop a methodology and appropriate mechanisms (procedures) for evaluating and measuring the effects of quality management. This research was carried out by performing an in-depth examination of the effect and impact of an implemented QMS on Hong Kong construction companies and their personnel at different levels of the organizations. This study has contributed to the knowledge currently available regarding the application of QMS. Its findings will be of general use in the construction sector and also for the industry practitioners as they will be able to apply the methods and processes developed.

Investigation and evaluation of the canning production processes of various cultivars of small white beans

Bekker, Leon Johan 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The vegetable unit of Tiger Brands annually is responsible for the canning of approximately 115,200,000 cans of a variety of vegetables, of which baked beans constitute approximately seventy percent. The canning of baked beans is subject to a number of challenges with regard to the raw materials and equipment used. The challenges involve the approved raw materials, the storage thereof and the condition and age of the equipment in the plant. The baked beans are produced throughout the year and inconsistencies in the final product are a major cause for concern. The primary aim of this study was to determine which cultivar of beans is the most suitable for use in the canning industry and whether other cultivars can be used with some adjustments to the production processes to eliminate the current inconsistencies. A further aim was to make recommendations on how to create more capacity and to increase the quality of the final product. The problem was addressed by analysing the production processes for the three different bean cultivars over a period of approximately three months and determining the behaviour of the different cultivars. It is clear from the data collected that the different cultivars behave differently during the production processes and yield different results at the final stage of inspection. Human intervention during the production processes also played an important role in the quality of the final product of the different bean cultivars. Human interventions are currently necessary due to the age of the equipment, poor maintenance over the years and modifications made to the equipment to try to increase capacity and the quality of the product. Further studies could be conducted in some of the areas excluded from this study, to determine the suitability of other bean cultivars for the canning industry.

Developing a grading system for restaurants in South Africa.

Roberson, Joseph Robert January 2014 (has links)
D. Tech. Food and Beverage Management / The low entry barriers to the restaurant industry have given rise to an extremely competitive business environment. In this volatile business sector it is of utmost importance that a strategy of quality differentiation be implemented. In most international sectors of the tourism and hospitality industry customers rely on grading systems to give them some indication of what quality they can expect at a certain price. South African restaurants, that form an integral part of the hospitality industry, however are not rated according to a nationally accepted grading system. Important aspects of a quality differentiation strategy are Total Quality Management, benchmarking and service quality management. This project was aimed at establishing a grading system that would inform customers as well as restaurateurs of expectations of restaurant quality. The researcher conducted this study to ascertain which criteria restaurateurs regard as important factors influencing the customer's restaurant selection.

The implications of the 2014 construction regulations for the Department of Public Works procurement system

Matete, Kenevoe Rose January 2016 (has links)
The Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) notes that regulations seek to make improvements by changing individual or organisational behaviour in ways that generate positive impacts in terms of solving societal and economic problems. At its most basic level, regulations are designed to work according to implementation, leading to changes in behaviours that, in turn, lead to changes in outcomes. Such outcomes can be satisfaction in terms of an underlying problem or other (hopefully positive) changes in conditions in the world. Following this premise, this research project investigates the implications of the 2014 Construction Regulations for the Department of Public Works’ procurement system. The study also examines the contents of the construction Regulations; the impact of the Construction Regulations 2014 – permit-to-work; client / contractor procurement issues; the enforcement of compliance to permit-to-work requirements, and education and training demands in relation to health and safety (H&S) competency. The study shows that even though industry role players are relatively familiar with the Construction Regulations 2014, there is a common concern regarding competency (education and training) levels required for the implementation of the permit-to-work requirement of the regulations. The concerns focus on the ability of the Department of Labour (DoL) to process the permits. Based on the study’s findings, the research concludes that there would be cost implications for project actors when implementing the permit-to-work requirement and this cost factor could delay project initiation and planning, as well as service delivery.

Comparison of 2-Year and 4-Year Telecommunications Technicians' Training Programs Against the Industry Standards

Houdashell-Riegel, Karen Marie 12 1900 (has links)
The study focused on the academic programs offered for telecommunications technicians provided by 16 two-year and four-year higher education institutions and the ways in which the programs compared to the established telecommunications technicians' skill standards. Six specific research questions concerned the training programs for telecommunications technicians. The first verified the validity of the information in Peterson's 2000: 2 Year Colleges and Peterson's 2000: 4 Year Colleges identifying the institutions offering a communication equipment technology major. The second question focused on the institutions that included telecommunications as part of the curriculum. The third identified the importance of the skill standards to the 2-year and 4-year training programs, and the fourth identified the job functions that were included in or excluded from the training. The fifth question identified the job tasks that were included in or excluded from the training. The final question determined whether the 2-year or the 4-year telecommunications technicians' training program was more closely aligned with the skill standards. In order to accomplish the objectives of this research, a survey methodology was selected. The survey instrument was developed to compare the importance of the telecommunications technicians' skill standards to the 2-year and the 4-year training programs. The skill standards identified in the 1997 collaborative effort facilitated by the South King County Tech Prep Consortium (SKCTPC) was used as the basis for the survey instrument and reference tool. The reference tool provided additional information regarding SCANS skills and personal qualities that were identified in the skill standards for the telecommunications network technician. The survey included five job functions and 16 tasks. The evolution the telecommunications industry has created a demand for a highly skilled, flexible workforce. Higher education institutions have an opportunity to make a contribution to telecommunications industry by expanding existing training programs or initiating telecommunications technicians' training programs. The 4-year institutions should consider revising not only the curriculum but also their mission and goals. The 2-year institutions are closely aligned with the skill standards, and this is an opportunity for the 2-year institutions to update existing programs.

Streamlining Certification Management with Automation and Certification Retrieval : System development using ABP Framework, Angular, and MongoDB / Effektivisering av certifikathantering med automatisering och certifikathämtning : Systemutveckling med ABP Framework, Angular och MongoDB

Hassan, Nour Al Dine January 2024 (has links)
This thesis examines the certification management challenge faced by Integrity360. The decentralized approach, characterized by manual processes and disparate data sources, leads to inefficient tracking of certification status and study progress. The main objective of this project was to construct a system that automates data retrieval, ensures a complete audit, and increases security and privacy.  Leveraging the ASP.NET Boilerplate (ABP) framework, Angular, and MongoDB, an efficient and scalable system was designed, developed, and built based on DDD (domain-driven design) principles for a modular and maintainable architecture. The implemented system automates data retrieval from the Credly API, tracks exam information, manages exam vouchers, and implements a credible authentication system with role-based access control.  With the time limitations behind the full-scale implementation of all the planned features, such as a dashboard with aggregated charts and automatic report generation, the platform significantly increases the efficiency and precision of employee certification management. Future work will include these advanced functionalities and integrations with external platforms to improve the system and increase its impact on operations in Integrity360.
