Experimental Verification of a New Single Plate Shear Connection Design Model

Single plate shear connections are designed to have sufficient strength to resist the shear force and moment transferred from the beam. The connections must also provide sufficient ductility to allow the beam end to rotate freely. In the United States the current recommended design method is found in the AISC 13th Edition Steel Construction Manual (2005b). The limited experimental work which led to the current method necessitated additional single plate shear connection investigations. This paper summarizes the results and analysis of eight full scale single plate shear connections tested at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The test setup consisted of a test beam attached to a test column with a single plate shear connection at one end and supported by a roller at the other end. The single plate was welded to the column flange and bolted to the beam web. Load was applied to the test beam at third points until failure of the connection or test beam. The current design method used in the United States was examined with respect to the connection tests performed. In particular, the ultimate shear strength and the rotational capacity were investigated. Suggestions are made regarding changes to the method and further research. / Master of Science

Examining Usability, Navigation, and Multimedia Learning Principles in an Intentionally Designed Asynchronous Online College Course: A Usability Study

This qualitative study examines an asynchronous online course from a private university utilizing a template model for all online courses to provide students with consistent navigation and course structure throughout their degree program. The asynchronous online courses are purposely created using three criteria of quality course design: navigation is intuitive, information is chunked, and instructions are written clearly. A two-part usability test was conducted with three internal and three external participants. The two-part usability test focused on course navigation and examined the signaling, segmenting, and coherence principles applied to course content page layouts. Transcripts from the usability tests and observational field notes were coded through an iterative process in Nvivo. Through emic and etic coding, seven main categories were identified: user experience, cognitive load, multimedia learning principles, page design and layout attributes, course navigational attributes, course attributes and information, and participant navigational behavior. The findings for first-day navigation, general navigational behaviors, and perceptions of design elements used to implement the signaling, segmenting, and coherence principle are discussed. Course design recommendations for creating a positive usability experience and suggestions for future research are provided.

This study determined the impact that test has had on the curricula of participating districts as was perceived by superintendents. A survey instrument was developed, validated, and tested for reliability and was then presented to a random sample of superintendents in five size categories.

This thesis examines the certification management challenge faced by Integrity360. The decentralized approach, characterized by manual processes and disparate data sources, leads to inefficient tracking of certification status and study progress. The main objective of this project was to construct a system that automates data retrieval, ensures a complete audit, and increases security and privacy.  Leveraging the ASP.NET Boilerplate (ABP) framework, Angular, and MongoDB, an efficient and scalable system was designed, developed, and built based on DDD (domain-driven design) principles for a modular and maintainable architecture. The implemented system automates data retrieval from the Credly API, tracks exam information, manages exam vouchers, and implements a credible authentication system with role-based access control.  With the time limitations behind the full-scale implementation of all the planned features, such as a dashboard with aggregated charts and automatic report generation, the platform significantly increases the efficiency and precision of employee certification management. Future work will include these advanced functionalities and integrations with external platforms to improve the system and increase its impact on operations in Integrity360.
