Information management for the factory planning process

Chen, Danfang January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is based on the present needs for the factory planning support, of which the most important ones are: • A structured reuse of knowledge and support for industries. Because today the industry handbook in factory planning is not satisfying enough to support this complex process. • Better methods to represent and communicate data between software within the factory layout area for easier data communication and thereby information access, exchange and reuse. To support the factory planning, based on the mentioned needs, a mapping of the present factory planning process is made based on knowledge from industry and academy. Since the factory planning process is a huge and complex process that no one can handle by themself, a puzzle work is performed. Based on gathered information and knowledge an activity model is developed, to structure the data and information. The model gives a better overview on the actual course of events and in this way also “captures” the most important information to be represented for data exchange among different software applications and different people. In this thesis the most important information in factory layout is gathered and structured in a concept model for factory layout. Since the concepts depend on the context in which they are used, it is extremely important to present every concept in its relationship with other related concepts within the area.  A general theory and state-of-the-art definitions in the area is presented and discussed for a factory planning information management system. An evaluation and discussion is made for the state-of-the-art software in the area of concern.

Exploring Strategies for Implementing Data Governance Practices

Cave, Ashley 01 January 2017 (has links)
Data governance reaches across the field of information technology and is increasingly important for big data efforts, regulatory compliance, and ensuring data integrity. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies for implementing data governance practices. This study was guided by institutional theory as the conceptual framework. The study's population consisted of informatics specialists from a small hospital, which is also a research institution in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. This study's data collection included semi structured, in-depth individual interviews (n = 10), focus groups (n = 3), and the analysis of organizational documents (n = 19). By using methodological triangulation and by member checking with interviewees and focus group members, efforts were taken to increase the validity of this study's findings. Through thematic analysis, 5 major themes emerged from the study: structured oversight with committees and boards, effective and strategic communications, compliance with regulations, obtaining stakeholder buy-in, and benchmarking and standardization. The results of this study may benefit informatics specialists to better strategize future implementations of data governance and information management practices. By implementing effective data governance practices, organizations will be able to successfully manage and govern their data. These findings may contribute to social change by ensuring better protection of protected health information and personally identifiable information.

User perception of new ICT in risk management : A Swedish Case study in construction / Användarens uppfattning av nya IKT i arbetet med risker : En svensk fallstudie inom byggprojekt

Nilsson, Elina, Löfquist, Emelie January 2020 (has links)
The construction industry today is entirely dependent on the work of projects and these projects are associated with a numerous amount of risks. In order to manage and control these risks, research has shown that efficient strategies are needed, thus, to be able minimize different deviations throughout the entire project life cycle. Functioning risk management is essential for successful construction projects. Research has also shown that the importance of digitalization in the construction industry is increasing rapidly and a result of this technology advancement is an increase in the amount of information that needs to be stored, shared and communicated across the project. In addition, information management is a significant factor in how quality in risk management is maintained, and it is vital to adopt information and communication technologies (ICT) to support this. For ICTs to be accepted, adopted and to reach their full potential it is of essence to understand how users perceive working in a digital environment and to share information and communicate digitally. Thereby, this study aims to study how users perceive a new ICT-tool for digital information sharing and communication, as well as the potential of the ICT-tool to influence the work of risk management within the project. To be able to approach the research questions, elicit data was gathered through a qualitative, empirical case study including interviews, observations and a questionnaire. The case study is delimited to a construction project, Building 61, at Danderyds Hospital and their work of risk-management. The case study analyzes how users perceive the increase of use of digital information sharing and communication of risks followed by the recently implemented ICT-tool, Jira Software. Findings shows that the user perception of communication and sharing information through the ICT-tool is perceived as positive and contributes to the improvement of the management of risks. But even though the amount of information now can be transferred and shared through one platform, and increasing the accessibility, it is found that sharing information and communicating digitally does not eliminate the need for interactive communication in the work of risks. Additionally, despite provided training, there is still need for further integration into existing workprocesses in order to utilize the amount of information generated on to the ICT-tool. Conclusively, the use of the new ICT-tool has been perceived as very useful, but it has also given rise to new challenges, mainly concerned the ability to find information in the tool, which needs to be overcome in order for the ICT to reach its full potential and to improve the work with risk management.

A Conceptual Model for determining the Value of Business Intelligence Systems

Budree, Adheesh January 2014 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Business Intelligence refers to the use of Information Systems to enable raw data to be collated into information that can be reported, with the end goal of using this information to enhance the business decision-making process. Business Intelligence is enabled by making use of information that is complete, relevant, accurate, timely and accessible. There are currently a number of documented perspectives that can be used to gauge the value of Business Intelligence systems; however, from an overall business value perspective the most robust method would be to identify and analyse the most commonly identified factors that impact the value assigned to Business Intelligence Systems by a company, and the correlation of each of these factors to calculate the overall value. The importance of deriving a conceptual model, representing the major factors identified from literature and moderated by the quantitative research conducted, lies in its enabling companies and government bodies to assess the true value addition of Business Intelligence systems, and to understand the return on investment of these systems for organisations. In doing so, companies can justify or reject any further expenditure on Business Intelligence. The quantitative research for this thesis was conducted together with a project that was run between the University of the Western Cape and the Hochschule Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences in Germany. The research was conducted simultaneously across organisations in South Africa and Germany on the use of BI Systems and Corporate Performance Management. The respondents for the research were Chief Executive Officers, Chief Information Officers and Business Intelligence Managers in selected organisations. A Direct Oblimin-factor analysis was conducted on the online survey responses. The survey was conducted on a sample of approximately 1500 Business Intelligence specialists across South Africa and Germany; and 113 responses were gathered. The factor analysis reduced the key factors identified in the literature to a few major factors, namely: Information Quality, Management and Accessibility, Information Usage, and Knowledge-sharing Culture. Thereafter, a Structural-Equation-Modelling analysis was completed using the Partial-least-Squares method. The results indicate that there is a strong relationship between the factor-Information Quality, Management and Accessibility, and the Value of Business Intelligence. It was found that while there was no strong impact from Information Usage and Culture, there was a strong correlation between Information Usage and Culture and Information Quality, Management and Accessibility The research findings are significant for academic researchers, information technology experts, Business Intelligence specialists and Business Intelligence users. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by bringing together disparate factors that have been identified in academic journals; and assessing the relationship each has on the value of Business Intelligence, as well as the correlations that exist between these factors. From this, the final conceptual model was derived using factors that were identified and tested through the Factor Analysis and the PLS-SEM. The following conclusions can be drawn from the research: (1) The assurance of quality information in the form of complete, accurate, relevant and timeous information that is efficiently managed is the most paramount factor to an organisation deriving value from Business Intelligence systems; (2) information accessibility is key, in order to realise the value of Business Intelligence systems in organisations; and (3) Business Intelligence systems cannot add value to an organisation if a culture of information use and sharing is absent within that organisation. The derived model can be practically implemented as a checklist for organisations to assess Business Intelligence system investments as well as current implementations

Improving the information architecture at Boliden Group

Nyberg, Kristina January 2018 (has links)
Architects design physical structures to allow visitors to perform certain actions. The same idea can be applied to the digital landscape [18]. Physical architectural design of spaces for employees within the metals industry influence and improve productivity [14], whereas a suboptimal intranet design can cause decreased productivity in a digital landscape [20]. During an IT conference in June 2018, it was established that 75% of enterprise cloud-based system users consider the complexity of implementation or operations top obstacles to usage. Productivity, efficiency, and consideration for people are strategic values at Boliden Group AB [22], yet the internal Document Management System (DMS) indicated the opposite to be true. The DMS was thus analyzed using Information Architecture (IA) principles; context, content, and users [3], through a case study including (3) stakeholder and (1) expert interviews, an internal questionnaire with 631 respondents, external State-of-the-Art (SoA) analysis including sketch and (4) interviews and a final survey with 35 respondents. Results indicated inconclusive policies concerning education in Information Systems (IS); problematic DMS user interface (UI) and branding; IS restriction to Microsoft (MS) Office365 and a desire to use Sharepoint increasingly. The overall impression indicated desire to follow the strategy at Boliden Group AB, through well defined methods and goals, and focus on simplifying processes. The State-of-the-Art analysis identified success factors organization, emails, publishing, tools, and findability. Recommendations propose to leverage impressions particularly regarding strategy, UI and training. Improvements to the IA should be done following complementary user-focused research in two steps; Search-log analysis followed by Contextual inquiry. Applied improvements from the State-of-the-Art analysis were visualized in a sketch that can, collectively with future user insights, be used to inspire a developed Digital Workplace with Sharepoint UI and more intuitive document management for the common user, in order to provide simplifying recommendations for improved IAand productivity.
