Proposal evaluation methodology for BIM design coordination rooms.Míriam Roux Azevedo Addor 30 September 2015 (has links)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a new process to produce a building that may include its entire lifecycle. It requires the construction of a three-dimensional model contemplating the information of the objects to be built. Due to the great extent to which this process can serve, it can cause many impacts throughout the production chain and, therefore, many current forms of work should be reviewed or changed. Among these, is the design coordination task. This work aims to develop a methodology for evaluating BIM coordination rooms contextualized in real state users using this process in their projects. When coordinating projects using BIM, different media are required from those used when the analysis is paper-based. New meeting participants\' needs surface like visualizing, browsing or checking a 3D model, making digital sketches, and other activities that make face-to-face meetings productive, in order to solve project problems. In this work, criteria and metrics for evaluating the quality of layouts of BIM coordination rooms are proposed. To validate the results, fourteen different layouts for the same room were analyzed and evaluated regarding proposed metrics and criteria. In order to establish the relative importance among all the ten proposed criteria, the AHP method of multi-criteria decision based on pair comparisons analysis was applied. The results determined the best layouts for a room equipped with two interactive projectors. The criteria and metrics presented, as well as the methodology to measure them, are useful for the evaluation of other rooms and layouts to serve meeting room users based on BIM.

Virtual exploratory model: proposal of a selling tool for the residential property market.Nilton Paulo Raimundo Mendes 05 September 2012 (has links)
Examining the business environment of the real estate sector, it can be verified the large number of architectural mockups that today are part of real estate points-of-sale. Mockups are fragile, expensive, take considerable time to be made and have a short life span, as they are discarded when the sales booth is decommissioned. In the sales booths, it is also possible to find full size furnished mock-up flats, with even higher costs. In this environment, the MVE (Exploratory Virtual Model) becomes important for the construction and real estate industries, whose markets are increasingly competitive, where there is a real need to reduce costs, to decrease in execution times and to increase product quality. As it is an important topic of scientific research, this paper proposes the MVE development for selling residential real estate property. The MVE was modeled with a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) / BIM (Building Information Modeling) tool which proved adequate to meet requirements raised in the survey. The MVE was evaluated through case studies in real estate ventures with brokers and customers. Results show that MVE can be developed with much lower cost and in shorter time than the architectural mockup or the mock-up flat and that it has very well accepted both by real estate sales professionals and clients.

With the construction and development of the smart city, how to construct the realistic 3D model of the large-scale city buildings quickly and efficiently which becomes the research hotspot. In this thesis, a novel 3D modeling approach is proposed to quickly and efficiently build 3D model of large-scale city buildings based on shape grammar and facade rule modeling. Building Information Model (BIM) is an important technical means to enhance the construction industry, for the city building design and construction, how to better research and application of BIM technology which is the key, in this thesis City Building Integrated Information Model (CBIIM) is specified to manage the information of building lifecycle effectively and realize the information sharing and exchanging. This thesis has studied the acquisition and processing of the modeling data. Google Earth and ArcGIS software are mainly used to acquire and process image-maps data and elevation-maps data of the target area, these two kinds of data match and overlay, which can generate 3D city terrain data with geographic location information. Then OpenStreetMap is used to acquire road data of the target area, and it can be optimal processed to the necessary road network by JOSM software. 3D laser scanning technology is used to collect building surface texture images and create the point clouds model of the target architecture modeling so as to get the modeling dimensions by measurement. On this basis, this thesis mainly has studied the principle and the process of CGA rule to create building models, and studied the method that can separate architectural elements using image segmentation to generate CGA rule automatically and to create building model furtherly. Thus 3D building models have been established in the CityEngine software using CGA rules and facade modeling technology. This thesis has specified the City Building Integrated Information Model (CBIIM) based on BIM. The city building information are classified and integrated, and the building and component was described with the IFC standard, in order to manage the informations of building lifecycle effectively. This thesis studies the integrated information association model technology, that it can realize standardized component design with associated features and intelligent building design with associated parameters in knowledge rules combined with IFC. The construction simulation technology is studied. The knowledge rules in the integrated information model provide a reliable reference for the construction simulation, and the simulation scene is created through the invoking the integrated information model, thus the construction simulation process is completed by the program. Taking Baoshan Campus of Shanghai University as an example, the modeling process of the whole scene is illustrated, and the modeling steps of all kinds of 3D objects are described in detail to solve the specific problems in the actual modeling process. Thus the feasibility and validity of the procedural intelligent modeling approach are verified. Taking the dormitory of Shanghai University as an example, a simulation scene and the simulation model were created by the integrated informations, combined with the relevant construction information the construction simulation was completed by the program. Thus the feasibility and validity of the CBIIM are verified.

The object of information retrieval systems is to make easy the access to documents and to allow a user to find those that are appropriate. The quality of the results of research is measured by comparing the answers of the system with the ideal answers that the user hopes to find. The system is competitive when its answers correspond to those that the user hopes. The first retrieval systems performing Boolean researches, in other words, researches in which only the presence or the absence of a term of a request in a text allow choosing it. It was necessary to wait for the end of the sixties to apply the vector model in information retrieval. In these two models, alone presence, absence, or frequency of words in the text is holder of information. Several Information Retrieval Systems adopt a flat approach in the modeling of data and in the counting of similarity between documents or in comparison with a request. We call this approach ‘bag of words ’. These systems consider only presence, absence or frequency of appearance of terms in a document for the counting of its pertinence, while Hearst and Morris [6] uses online thesaurus to create semantic links between terms in a process of lexical chains. In this thesis we develop a new retrieval system which allows representing textual data by signals. This new form of presentation will allow us, later, to apply numerous mathematical tools from the theory of the signal such as Wavelets Transforms, well-unknown nowadays in the field of the textual information retrieval

There are different approaches to implement sustainability and Design for Sustainability (DfS) is the one that give more accurate result by considering both global and regional scales. Integration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is an example of tool integration to support sustainability. In LCA framework, Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) is the quantified and classified list of input and output flow of the LCA model that is a model of the product system, linking the technological system to the ecosphere (Environment system). As each region has a unique environmental system, design characteristics and specifications of technological system should be modified and adopted based on these differences. Implementation of this approach will require geographical information of interacted environmental systems, which is a kind of new strategy in DfS. Therefore, we tested the interest of the integration of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with PLM to support geographical considerations during product development activities. The main research question of this research work is then how to propose this PLM-GIS integration for DfS. Thus, we conducted that literature review on existing data models about product, environment, geography and their combination is a key to prove the link among them

To date, computer vision systems are limited to extract digital data of what the cameras "see". However, the meaning of what they observe could be greatly enhanced by environment and human-skills knowledge. In this work, we propose a new approach to cross-fertilize computer vision with contextual information, based on semantic modelization defined by an expert. This approach extracts the knowledge from images and uses it to perform real-time reasoning according to the contextual information, events of interest and logic rules. The reasoning with image knowledge allows to overcome some problems of computer vision such as occlusion and missed detections and to offer services such as people guidance and people counting. The proposed approach is the first step to develop an "all-seeing" smart building that can automatically react according to its evolving information, i.e., a context-aware smart building. The proposed framework, named WiseNET, is an artificial intelligence (AI) that is in charge of taking decisions in a smart building (which can be extended to a group of buildings or even a smart city). This AI enables the communication between the building itself and its users to be achieved by using a language understandable by humans.

Room for More of Us? : Important Design Features for Informed Decision-Making in BIM-enabled Facility ManagementKoort, Hannes January 2021 (has links)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is becoming imperative across building disciplines to improve communication and workflow from the first blueprint. Maintenance and facility management is however lagging behind in adoption and research of BIM. Utilizing research-through-design, this study explores BIM-enabled facility management and the critical practice of decision-making at the Celsius building in Uppsala. Contextual design and inquiry were applied to identify and suggest important design features that support decisions related to the task of establishing maximum room occupation. Results show that facility managers can make use of fuzzy multicriteria decision-making and expert heuristics to independently reach conclusions. Important design features were found to heavily rely on the existing building models, where context-view filtered to room capacity data in the existing BIM-system effectively supported the users’ assessment of data. The filtered, aggregated information presented in a simplified mobile format was insufficient for decision-making, suggesting that the building model was more important than initially perceived.

The climatic changes caused by the El Niño Phenomenon of 2017 have caused the collapse of a large number of bridges in Peru. Large sums of money are used for construction and maintenance, which is why importance should be taken in the construction processes to make efficient use of the large amount of money to be used to materialize these projects. This research will show the difference in cost and time through a simulation with the Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) methodology. This methodology integrates information in a visual model which will serve as a tool for planning the construction of the superstructure of a bridge. This approach will study the construction of prestressed concrete and steel beams; and slabs by in-situ casting and precast slabs. Likewise, the maintenance costs required by each alternative will be differentiated, thus determining a structural system that optimizes the use of economic resources and the time frame for the construction of the superstructure. As a result, the integral cost and construction time of the ideal superstructure for the case study is obtained. / Tesis

Use of BIM in Building Operations and Maintenance : An Approach to Identifying Sustainable Value / Användningen av BIM under Drift och FörvaltningDu, Jenny, Hoeft, Madeleine January 2020 (has links)
While the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) has been increasing over the last decade and enabled a more integrated collaboration of different disciplines in the construction industry, its implementation in the operation phase of a building is still in its infancy in Sweden. Studies have been conducted to identify barriers and opportunities associated with the use of BIM in building operations and maintenance. There is a lack of research proposing a holistic approach to the evaluation of the value of BIM in operation and maintenance from the perspective of economic, ecological, and social sustainability. Therefore, this paper aims to follow up on the identified research gap by investigating: How sustainable value is created using BIM in operation and maintenance from an owner’s perspective? A sustainable value framework is applied to the findings of an extensive literature review and compared to the reflections of Swedish industry professionals in semi-structured interviews. Based on the value destroyed or missed for key stakeholders by current O&M practices, the opportunities created with the use of BIM are highlighted. It was found that the most added value is expected from an economic and social perspective, reducing current inefficiencies in the integration of databases and documents, process structures, and knowledge management. More efficient information management and improved data accuracy is expected to enable better services, increase employee motivation, and optimize space management. Major struggles highlighted by the industry representatives are costs and a very fragmented work towards the implementation, often limited to internal efforts or small national initiatives. Based on the findings, further research will be needed to test and validate quantitative metrics in case studies, assess to what extent standards can promote the faster and more predictable implementation of BIM in O&M. In addition, the social value implications of using BIM in O&M should be evaluated more in detail.

The Current State of Practice of Building Information ModelingBrooks, Kevin P 09 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become extremely prominent in the construction industry in the past twenty years. It serves as a digital repository that can, when used to its fullest potential, combine all aspects of designing, building, and managing a structure in one place, alongside all the data produced in those processes. The construction industry has to date struggled to increase productivity alongside similar fields, such as the manufacturing industry, though the construction industry generally has far more stakeholders on one project than the manufacturing industry. Further, building designs are becoming more complex while project schedules are becoming tighter. As states look to better manage and develop their infrastructure in the most efficient manner possible, it is critical that all options to improve both project results and efficiency are considered. Organizations such as the International Standards Organization (ISO) and British Standards Institute (BSI) have created standards such as ISO19650 and PAS1192 to provide guidance for how to best implement BIM. This study begins with an extensive literature review to determine the current state of practice of BIM from an academic standpoint. Semi-structured interviews with industry experts on BIM from those working as academics, architects, contractors, clients, software vendors, and engineers are used to inform a two-round Delphi study. The Delphi study seeks to elaborate on the potentials and barriers of BIM, and to determine the consensus or lack thereof within the overall building industry with respect to BIM. The various industry sectors are found to have poor agreement on the potentials and barriers of BIM, but the potentials are found to outweigh the barriers, aligning with the industry’s increasing adoption of BIM since its creation 20 years ago.
