Practice-based Professional Development for Self-regulated Strategy Development: Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities and Other Struggling Writers to Pen Informational Essays Citing Text-based Evidence in an Inclusive Setting

FitzPatrick, Erin R 08 August 2017 (has links)
The complex task of reading, understanding, analyzing, synthesizing, and subsequently writing in response to a prompt about multiple texts required by the Common Core writing standards is difficult for many students, especially struggling writers and students with learning disabilities. The majority of elementary teachers report having less than adequate preparation in writing pedagogy and identify writing as the area they feel least prepared to teach. In this multiple probe across participants study, two teachers, a special education teacher and a cooperating general education teacher in whose classroom he worked, served as teacher participants. The special education teacher implemented Self-regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) for informational writing citing text-based evidence from two sources following practice-based professional development (PBPD) with small groups of students. Three female and five male fifth-grade African American students teacher-identified as struggling writers or receiving Special Education services for a specific learning disability (LD) participated in the study. Research questions were: To what extent can SRSD be implemented with fidelity in small groups by a special education teacher in an inclusive general education setting? To what extent does SRSD instruction in the informational genre citing text-based evidence improve the writing skills of fifth grade students with LD or those who struggle in writing in terms of (a) analytic quality, (b) evidence of strategy use, and (c) length? To what extent is SRSD considered to be a socially valid intervention for use in inclusive education settings by the participating teachers and students? A teacher survey of classroom writing practices and observations of classroom writing practices were conducted prior to the intervention to contextualize current writing practices. Student writing probes were assessed for plagiarism, academic vocabulary, number of essay elements, evidence of strategy use, and length. Fidelity was collected for writing prompt administration, PBPD, and SRSD. The teacher implemented with high fidelity and rated PBPD favorably both before and after intervention. Following intervention, student analytic quality, evidence of strategy use, and number of words written increased. Instances of plagiarism were decreased following intervention. SRSD was rated high on measures of social validity by both students and teachers.

Essays on the Tax Policy and Insider Trading

Shi, Han 24 March 2017 (has links)
In the first essay I examine the relation between firm advertising and tax aggressiveness. Advertising increases firm visibility in both the product and the financial market. While investors would appreciate more tax savings, they are aware of the negative impact of tax aggressiveness on consumers’ views of the firm and hence its competitive positions in the product market. We find that firms that spend more on advertising have fewer tax sheltering activities, lower book-tax differences, and higher cash effective tax rates. Specifically, an increase of 1% on Advertisingi,t (ADVGPi,t), the firm pays an additional tax of $0.70 million ($10.92 million). However, the negative impact of advertising on tax aggressiveness becomes weaker (and even reverses) for firms having great transparency, more public scrutiny, or strong external monitoring. We control for endogeneity using propensity score matching and an instrumental variable approach. Our findings are consistent with the argument that advertising enhances corporate reputation and is an important determinant in firms’ tax planning. In the second essay I document a significant increase in opportunistic insider trades when retail investors are paying greater attention to the stock. Using Google SVI to proxy for their level of attention, we find that a higher (lower) SVI on a stock is associated with more insider sales (purchases) of the stock and greater abnormal returns on the sales (purchases). A value-weighted long-short portfolio mimicking insider trades would earn an abnormal return of 1.19% per month (14.28% per year), excluding transaction costs. We also fund that the SVI-related insider traders tend to be non-independent directors who have long tenures but no senior executive positions in their firm and the firm tends to exhibit weaker governance, lower reputation, and poorer social responsibility. Our results are more pronounced for lottery-type stocks but are weaker for stocks with large attention of local investors. Interestingly, the risk of SEC investigation and litigation is lower on SVI-related insider sales and this type of sales actually rises following an increase in news releases of SEC enforcement action. Overall, certain insiders appear to engage in trades to take advantage of variations of retail investors’ attention to their stock.

Sexualitet efter gynekologisk cancer : En allmän litteraturstudie / Sexuality after gynaecological cancer : A literature review

Johansson, Anna, Jusufovic, Amila January 2017 (has links)
Background: Gynaecological cancer is a collective term that includes several different forms of cancer. Both illness and treatment affect women's sexuality on multiple levels. This includes physical, mental and social aspects. The experiences of these women also contain suffering in various forms. Katie Eriksson describes this in the nursing theory Caritative Caring as: suffering related to illness, suffering related to life and suffering caused by care. Aim: The aim of this study was to highlight women's experiences of their sexuality after undergoing treatment for gynaecological cancer. Method: A literature review based on twelve qualitative studies was conducted. Results: The results shows that women experience changes and difficulties linked to sexuality in several different ways, even long after the treatment is completed. The experiences are presented in five themes where the main findings are found in the themes Sexual Function and Sexual Relations. Conclusion: Knowledge of these women's experiences and suffering can increase the ability of healthcare professionals to provide good nursing care for women, which also aim at increasing women's sexual health. Proposals for further research: Continuing research in this field could contribute to how nurse students can best learn how conversations about sexuality are conducted in a convenient way for both patient and nurse.

L’ordre des mots chez Homère : structure informationnelle, localisation et progression du récit / Word order in Homer : information structure, localization and narrative progression

Bertrand, Nicolas 25 November 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, I study the principles of word order in Homeric Greek. As it is the case in classical prose, the fundamental principle consists in aligning constituents according to the information structure (IS) of the utterance, i.e. the expression of topic and focus relations. Topic expressions differ in their ratification status. As for focus, two constructions may be identified : a narrow focus construction, where the only element in the focus is placed immediately before the verb, and a broad focus construction, where the verb, optionally followed by other focal elements, builds up a focus domain ; the construal of this domain may be broad or narrow on its last element. Having described the expression of IS in the clause and the various contexts in which the different constructions occur, I explore the margins of the clause (pre- and postclausal positions), and I show that questions embed propositions with their own IS. In the demonstration, I make use of the prosodic partitioning of the utterance, as indicated by the position of postpositives and ratified topic expressions. Then, after studying hyperbaton in Classical and Homeric Greek, I show that tmesis, in Homer, is a kind of pseudo noun incorporation. Finally, building on this linguistic study, I reevaluate Homeric enjambment and try to identify a trope of Homeric poetry (narrative σῆμα), whereby a word (like kalós or stê/éstē) is placed in initial position in the line in order to mark the progression of the narrative.

Khalil, Walid January 2020 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Beef cattle stands out as an agribusiness activity in a competitive scenario with an upward and significant production scale in participation in exports and formation of the wealth generated. The traceability process stands out for ensuring efficiency and lowering the costs of production processes, streamlining the organizational structures of producing establishments, as well as promoting access to demanding markets that demand food safety and quality; in addition to acting as a “bridge” supplying the consumer market with information about the entire production process, storage and distribution of beef. In this respect, the Brazilian System for the Individual Identification of Bovines and Buffaloes (SISBOV), potentially contributes as a tool for animal management and management control, in addition to allowing access by rural establishments to the so-called “Lista Trace” which, through the audit of certifiers protocols for joining the system, they are suitable for export to demanding safety and quality markets such as the European Union. Also noteworthy is the information and formal information flows generated both in the process itself of traceability and adherence to the system, acting as assets in organizations, being considered as strategic resources in decision making, emphasizing that tacit information flows as relevant in construction of organizational actions. In this context, it seeks to answer whether information management and informational flows are considered in... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Transmídia aplicada a produtos informacionais do design contemporâneo /

Altamirano, Otniel Josafat López January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: We belong to a culture of consumption and production, both products and information services that for decades have established greater ties with the technological and communication areas. This bond obliges us to study and understand the changes that have occurred between media ecology and contemporary design activities. The relation to the form and content in which information is researched, structured and later articulated under intelligent management, which puts design in a broader point in the face of revolutions of social transformation, specifically those that happen between individuals and new media technologies. This is why, through an exploratory methodology, the present research accomplished the unfolding of the elements and the tools that characterize transmedia as a contemporary language that executes interactive processes and environments through the feedback of the users who build, broadcast messages and create audiovisual content. In addition, we conducted case studies, bringing to analysis the profiles and design activities of three information content creators. From Mexico the blogger Alan Estrada with his community “Alan por el Mundo- AXM”; from Brazil the agency “Tátil Design”; and from Argentina the multimedia producer “DCM Team”. Aiming to study and understand what brings the convergence between transmedia and informational products of design, thus allowing the individual knows in a positive way the origin, understand the concept, the path and the processe...
