Factors that impact on adjustment in parents of children with a learning disability and/or autism spectrum disorder

Rolfe, Laura January 2013 (has links)
ackground Previous research has shown that parents of children with learning disabilities (LD) and/ or autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are more psychologically distressed than parents of neuro‐typical children. The literature suggests that there is significant variation in the rates of maladjustment within this population, and the research into factors that influence parental adjustment is developing. This study aims to add to the research into the factors influencing adjustment to parenting a child with LD/ ASD. In particular, relatively under‐researched concepts such as parental acceptance, time since diagnosis, and the influence of informational support to understand a child’s needs, will be explored. Method Two hundred and thirty five parents of children aged 4‐19 participated in a questionnaire study, conducted through local additional support needs (ASN) schools and bases. Measures of psychological adjustment were gathered alongside measures of acceptance, positive gains, level of child’s challenging behaviour and demographic information. Results Along with other variables, psychological acceptance and was found to account for significant variance in parental adjustment. There were no observed relationships between adjustment and time since diagnosis, or level of informational support. Conclusions The results have implications for the understanding of the role of acceptance in parent adjustment. Implications for intervention development and future research directions are discussed, in addition to the methodological limits of the study.

Supporting care-giving fathers: fathers' perspectives of work, care and masculinity. / Supporting caregiving fathers

Elischer, Nicola 09 May 2012 (has links)
This study explores fatherhood in contemporary Canadian society by drawing on the experiences of nine full-time care-giving fathers in Vancouver, Canada. Using a social constructionist epistemology, the study explored how fathers who are primary caregivers to their young children construct masculinity, how they enact primary care-giving, and how they can be better supported within communities. Fathers were recruited through posters in community centres and through snowball sampling and volunteered to participate in interviews lasting between one and three hours. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed and analysed using pragmatic thematic analysis. Three key themes were constructed to represent the fathers’ self-reported experiences: fathers’ enactment of primary care-giving; fathers’ constructions of masculinity within dominant discourses of masculinity and care; and father’s support needs. Findings suggest that for these primary care-giving fathers, care-giving is active and adventurous, and egalitarian beliefs and roles regarding child care and domestic responsibility predominate within their co-parenting relationship. Traditional Euro-western masculine ideology tends to give way to a “hybrid” ideology that emphasizes affection, emotional intelligence, and caring for one’s family as a whole. Fathers indicated a preference for supports that are self-sought such as the internet and support from partners, and informal supports such as community events and time with peers to structured supports provided by community programs. Fathers who reported benefits from formal community programs offered insight into father-friendly practices. Stigma about primary care-giving by fathers was a significant theme constructed from the data. Implications for community programs for families and primary care-giving fathers in particular are discussed. / Graduate

A Qualitative Analysis of Hospital Nurses' Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic Through the Lens of the Demand-Control-Support Model

Garner, Alisha 01 January 2022 (has links)
Positive social support, realistic job demand, and appropriate levels of control over their responsibilities can mitigate empathy fatigue and burnout among nurses, increase quality care for patients, and lay the foundation for teams to embrace challenges during crises. The COVID-19 pandemic stretched nurses in all these areas, leading many nurses to contemplate changing fields. Failure to address and embrace the difficulties that nurses face during such crises can result in loss of nurses and impact the entire healthcare industry. The present study used one-to-one interviews to glean insider perspectives of changes in job demand, control, and support nurses experienced as they showed up to work in COVID-19 units. Results showed that the bridge to overcoming daily battles and stresses came primarily through supportive education and skill building, emotional support from peers, and venting after a challenging event. Keywords: social support, emotional support, informational support, moral injury, Demand-Control-Support Model

Navigating the New Normal: Supporting Motivation in the Remote Workplace : From a Self determination Theory

Lindberg, Martina, Steinmann, Mathilda January 2023 (has links)
Work motivation has been a topic of significance for a very long time, however, since there has been a recent shift towards remote work, traditional motivational theories might need to be reconsidered and applied to the new way of working. The self-determination theory (SDT) is one of many motivational theories, which says that once the three basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are reached, individuals will experience high amounts of motivation. In order to dive deeper into the topic of motivation in remote work, the purpose of our study is therefore to explore this area of research by examining how managerial support measures could be aimed at ensuring the feeling of autonomy, competence and relatedness, and in turn manage to possibly sustain motivation among remote workers.  With the aim of reaching and fulfilling the purpose of this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with five remote workers working in start-ups or SMEs within the IT sectors, or within companies with a digital focus. The data which we collected through interviews was then thematically analysed by careful coding and put into a variety of themes. Following the presentation of our findings was a meticulous analysis of the generated data, which was the base for our final conclusions drawn on the subject.  From the findings, we were able to conclude that autonomy achieved high scores in remote work, and was without exceptions fulfilled for all of our interview subjects. Within competence, the most challenges were detected, however the right supporting measures, like facilitating information sharing, would be able to work against these issues. Lastly, relatedness is oftentimes severely lacking within remote work due to the implied distance, however due to conscious choices to work remotely, individuals will be aware of decreasing relatedness when they start their journey of working remotely. Nonetheless, supporting measures like organising social gatherings or workshops, can limit the lack of feeling relatedness in the remote workplace.  This study can assist future researchers that are conducting studies within the growing remote work environment. Furthermore, it can help managers in the workplace to gain an updated view on motivation in remote working, and shift perspective to remotely adapted supporting measures.

This research analyzed the relationship between the elements that form the constructed environment of a thematic exhibition with interactive, immersive and multisensory characteristics in museums and the experience of the users. The conceptual base of this work understands the constructed environment of the exhibition as a product in which its tangible and intangible attributes are determined in the identification by its users. Therefore, this investigation had as a main goal to analyze how the resources such as illumination, sound, digital devices, scenography etc., employed in the exhibition environment affect the visiting experience of the museum. The literature review covered themes linked to the universe of exhibition design, highlighting the project practices and the understanding of how the use of these resources influences the perception that visitors create about the space. This research also seeks to advance the discussion and the comprehension of the experience and which of the factors interfere directly in the context of the experience of visiting the museum. This was conducted through a mixed methods structure, to investigate a case study in the Cais do Sertão Museum, situated in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. The museum chosen allowed us to investigate the perception of the visitors about the experience of the visit to this space, using the quantitative tool (15 dimensions of experience – PACKER, 2015) and how the visitors perceived the spacial characteristics by the quantitative tool (Perceived Atmosphere, FORREST, 2014). Also, the main group of designers and curators were interviewed in order to deepen the understanding of the project decisions and to assist in the characterization of the space. The data collected and analyzed revealed that the environment of the Cais do Sertão museum promotes different stimuli through the languages employed and quickens the possibility of hedonic, sensorial and affective experiences. It was also possible to correlate some of the answers given by the visitors with the intention of the curatorial project. Furthermore, this research agrees with Forrest (2014) in which an environment that has strong and vibrant stimuli with informational support at an adequate level to meet the curiosity and enables cognitive engagement, contributing to a satisfactory experience.

Student Perspectives of Hope, Stress, and Social Support Provision from Teachers during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Lillbäck, Mikaela January 2021 (has links)
The present study investigated the relationship between hope, stress, and social support provision from teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 80 students (i.e., 34 males; 46 females) ranging in age from 16 to 22 from multiple gymnasiums across Sweden. The cross-sectional research design collected data using an online survey. Statistical analyses revealed that there was a negative correlation between perceived stress and hope. Social support from teachers was also found to be positively correlated with hope. The subcategories identifying the nature of the social support provision indicated that levels of stress were negatively correlated with appraisal, informational, and instrumental support. Students’ levels of reported hope were found to correlate with appraisal, informational, instrumental, and emotional support. Gender was also found to be associated with stress, where women reported more perceived stress than men. Taken collectively, the study found that students who feel more hope are less stressed perceive more social support provision from teachers. Implications for teachers and limitations of the present study are discussed.
