Borgarklassens diskreta stil : Smak och samhällsklass i heminredningstidskriften "Sköna Hem" / The Discreet Style of the Bourgeouisie : Taste and Social Class in the Interior Design Magazine "Sköna Hem"

Lundström, Sara January 2012 (has links)
Within media and communications studies, questions of taste have often been associated with the dichotomy of high versus popular culture. The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has also used mass media products in his studies of class determined tastes and dispositions. In this paper the author uses the theoretical framwork of Bourdieu to examine aspects of social class and legitimate taste in the interior design magazine "Sköna Hem", a market leading magazine within it's genre of lifestyle magazines in Sweden. A specific type of feature article, where a real-life home is portrayed, is studied using the critical discourse analysis of Norman Fairclough. The homes portrayed are predominantly affluent and display elements of conspicuous consumtion as mediated through legitimate taste and cultural capital. Common traits are identified in writing style as well as the furnishings of the homes portrayed. Deviations from the norm are also discussed. The author also discusses text production with an emphasis on the impact of informal chriteria of quality on the selection of homes portrayed. The results show that the aesthetic ideals represented in the magazine correlate well to the "aesthetic disposition" described by Bourdieu as closely tied to haute bourgeois habitus. Shared discoursive elements include an emphasis on form as a characteristic of quality, an attitude of detachment as a way of relating to the objects of culture and a distancing from questions of economic neccessity. These elements are projected rhetorically through modality markers of high affinity, leaving the impression of a general defintion of style and beauty. Given that these results are representative of lifestyle journalism as a whole, the author interprets this as a hegemonizing process wherein a subjective defintion of taste typical of the haute bourgeois comes to represent an absolute. She proposes that this contributes to a pathologizing of powerless groups in society.

Broad to Marshall Bridge | A City Block Interior That Separates and Connects Place

Smith, Emily 27 April 2012 (has links)
This is a project about an old city block. It once housed confectioners, jewelers, restaurateurs, pharmacists, and retailers in street-level parcels with residents in the apartments above. Now, it is home to a barber, a few restaurateurs, and street vendors. Over 200 years of building and development have shaped what is now the north 100 block of E Broad Street and although most of it still stands, it shows the effects of renovations, time, and neglect. This is also a project about paths. As sidewalks move pedestrians along streets they provide paths to retailers, employers, homes, and places to gather and be. Instead of traveling alongside the city block, this project proposes a pedestrian path through it. By stitching together a series of fractured building parcels, the path begins and ends three hundred feet apart at the sidewalks of Broad and Marshall streets. Lastly, this is a project about movement. This bridge between Broad and Marshall Streets serves as a bridge between two different types of places. The collection of parcels that are united in purpose for the sake of this work touch with walls, floors, and ceilings and where they do, create opportunity for passage. Horizontal movement through the city block happens through large volumes defined by planes and program. Vertical movement occurs through perforated shafts and open layers that allow for users to comprehend distance and direction traveled.

Butiksytans betydelse för upplevelsen : En kvalitativ studie om layout och grupperingars påverkan på kvinnors butiksupplevelser i inredningsbutiker / The importance of store space for the experience : A qualitative study on layout and store allocations' impact on women's in store experiences in interior design stores

Björnberg, Moa, Löfström, Maja January 2019 (has links)
Purpose and Research question The main purpose of this study is to create understanding about how layout and space allocation, as aspects of store environments, affect the in-store customer experience (ISCX) of women interested in interior design. A question has been framed to fulfill the purpose of the study: How do layout and space allocation affect the ISCXof women interested in interior design where product are grouped by product categories compared with where product categories are mixed Method, Theoretical frame of reference and Empiricism The study is qualitative with a comparative research design that compares two cases that consist of the two stores Hemtex in Kalmar and Hjärterum in Borås. The theoretical frame of reference consists of theories about store environment and ISCX. These theories has been supplemented with theories about layout and space allocation, as a part of the store environment. The empiricism was gathered by interviews of three customers from each store and by two observations of the two store environments. Analysis and Conclusions The analysis discuss the empiricism with the theories by comparing the empiricism of each store. The analysis is resulting in the study’s conclusions which show that different ways of working with layout and space allocations in interior design stores result in different ISCX. An interior design store with products grouped by product categories promotes a functional focused ISCX with its functionality but limited space for inspiration. The strategy is therefore most suitable for a targeted activity, for a positive experience. Further the study indicates that mixed product categories promotes an inspiring focused ISCX with more space for inspiration but less navigation, it is therefore most suitable for a leisure activity for a positive experience.

Rummets betydelse för patientens välbefinnande och tillfrisknande

Eklund, Annika, Svedberg, Nina January 2007 (has links)
Program: Sjuksköterskeutbildning

Uppsatsnivå: C

Designing School Community: Changing Inner-City Middle School Culture Through Interiors

Ramey, Rachel A 01 January 2018 (has links)
While the knowledge of disrepair in inner-city schools is fairly common, the impact that school facilities are having on students and faculty is not as widely known. More recently, the closing of inner city schools has greatly increased across the United States; Reduction in public school enrollment from 2006-2013: Detroit -63%, Cleveland -32%, Indianapolis -27%, D.C. -23%, L.A. -23%,etc. (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Due to budget cuts, threat of school closings from poor facility conditions, large class size, and pressure to raise test scores, inner city schools struggle to keep teachers (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Poor teacher retention along with a lack in care for educational facilities has created a toxic environment for inner-city students. Although there are many reasons that inner-city schools suffer, negativity within school culture seems to be a common denominator within many of these problems. With larger population percentages of minority, economically disadvantaged and disabled students, difficulties arise in communicating student-to-student and teacher-to-student (Bellwether Education Partner, 2016). The question becomes, how does one design a space to provide comfort, safety and communication in order to foster healthy relationships? This research will inform the design of a middle school that focuses on community and communication. The goal will be to design a school where flexibility and team work is made easier through furniture and layout solutions in order to foster growth and respect for students and teachers.

Compact Living as a Lifestyle : Scenario-based Interior Design for Chinese Urban Tenants

Rong, Hu January 2019 (has links)
This thesis proposes "compact living" as a sustainable lifestyle, enabling dwellers to fulfil theirliving requirements while considering ecological concerns. The idea of this project is derivedfrom a phenomenon that urban immigrants move to smaller houses because of the shortage ofaffordable rental house in dense Chinese urban areas, which causes an issue regarding lack ofwell-functioning small housings for urban tenants. In order to develop suitable compact livingsolutions, this scenario-based design project has developed. The compact living requirementsof Chinese urban tenants were studied through design research. Meanwhile, the studies ofexisting small-space solutions aim to come up with solutions by concluding strategies for thespatial-plan. As a result, the designer came up with a concept of "shared co-living community" second-landlord business model with three feasible interior design proposals. Keywords:interior design; sustainable lifestyle; compact living; small space;scenario-based
