Musik in der Prosa von Günter Grass : Intermediale Bezüge —Transmediale Perspektiven / The Role of Music in Günter Grass’s Fiction : Intermedial References —Transmedial Perspectives

Schirrmacher, Beate January 2012 (has links)
The thesis explores the role of music in Günter Grass’s novels. In pointing out the vital role of intermediality for Grass’s narrative strategies, the thesis opens up for a new, intermedial perspective on his work. It shows how references to music are used to realise Grass’s poetological concept “paspresenture” – the simultaneous presence of past, present and future – as well as his constant strive towards concreteness. The study draws on theories of intermediality, with a special focus on the role of transmedial media characteristics. It develops a transmedial methodology for analysing intermedial references, stressing how the notion of “musicality” within the text is created by media characteristics shared by both music and literature. Intermedial references are conceived as highlighting structures that are inherent in literature. The textual analyses of The Tin Drum (1959), Too Far Afield (1995) and Crabwalk (2002) are divided into three steps. First, explicit musical references in the narratives are interpreted as indexes pointing towards transmedial structures relevant to this specific context. Second, the examination demonstrates the prominent role of transmedial characteristics such as repetitivity, contrast, simultaneity and performativity within the texts. Third and last, the function of musical reference is discussed: in all three narratives, the focus on transmedial structures supplies a more consistent interpretation of passages which otherwise prove difficult to decipher. In Grass’s fiction, issues appear not to be discussed but performatively reenacted and thus remind more of musical than literary development. What is more, music – as handled by Grass – does not appear absolute or transcendent; rather, its manipulative potential is always prominent. However, the way musical references are used to realise Grass’s poetological aims stresses the bodily presence of musical performance, thus making music appear as the performative realisation of time.

A media historical study of production and competition

Forsman, Michael January 2011 (has links)
The main question in this dissertation is: How can the emergence of local and commercial radio and the ensuing changes within each be understood in relation to intermedial and intramedial competition? This overarching question is broken down into four research questions. What driving forces contributed to the implementation of local and commercial radio respectively? (How can the competitive context of these two radio forms be described and periodized? In what ways have the practices of producing radio output, radio audiences and brands changed during the period covered by this study? What similarities and differences have emerged between local radio and commercial radio over time? This study can be seen as an institutional media history, focusing on two distinctive periods in the history of Swedish radio and television, Decentralization (1977-1987) and Commercialization (1987 onwards). The empirical material consists of documents, press clippings and some forty semi-structured in-depth interviews. Theoretically the dissertation combines political economy with a cultural perspective on media production and institutional intentionality. The empirical content is a two-part study on local radio and on commercial radio, presented through narrative principles of chronology and periodization. The results of the study are integrated to a large extent into the historical presentation that makes up the major part of the dissertation. More specifically, this historical exposition shows that issues of competition were important also before the deregulation of Swedish radio in 1993, and that the competitive conditions for these two parts of the Swedish radio landscape are on the one hand fundamentally different and on the other have become more similar over the years, especially when it comes to competitive strategies and production philosophies.

This dissertation aims at analyzing the nomadism inside the poetical work of Rui Pires Cabral – Portuguese poet and translator –, developing the concept in its geographic aspect, concerning the movements along the space referred in the verses, and its formal aspect, based on the intermedial dislocations present in that poetics. Therefore, at first we intend to question how the constant desterritorializations done by the poetical eye constitute a landless and foreign subjectivity that, on its turn, possesses a powerful resistance against the imposed sedentarism; while in the second moment we aim to demonstrate the intermedial relations between poetry and music, poetry and other literary forms, and poetry and image, done through a dynamic creative process which we called “poetical nomadism”, with a focus on collage

Media och materia : En intermedial studie av Metted Edvardsens föreställning Oslo / Media and matter : An intermedial study of the performance Oslo, by Mette Edvardsen

Lydahl, Karl January 2021 (has links)
This essay analyzes Mette Edvardsens performative work oslo, which usually falls under the label of dance and choreography. The performance is in many ways making use of and staging language though, so the aim here is to examine how the linguistic and textual material of the performance is enacted in relation to its mediating devices and vice versa. The essay is making use of the media theory by David J. Bolter and Richard A. Grusin to show that no medium stands by itself but always exists and works in a web-like relation to other medias. Language will therefore not be seen as isolated but always interacting with other mediating instances. Their theory will also stand as a base in trying to track different medias ideological origin. With inspiration from actor-network theory, this essay tries to map the performance as a network made up by components. The components will be understood, through material- semiotic theorists as Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, to exhibit agency. That is, they are seen to be doing something, they affect the network in a way which is beyond the control and possible intention by an author. The essay shows that Edvardsens performance is being enacted by its network, wherein the author or choreographer is one but not the only actor. The essay also examines how we come to understand a body or and object for what they are, how we define their borders, and will argue that borders are not static but are open for negotiation.

A stydu of the intermedial narrative of the metal band Vildhjartas conceptalbum Måsstaden under vatten

Ringmyr, Felix January 2023 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate intermedial studies and to analyze the intermedial narrative that appears out of the cooperation between music, lyrics and song cover of the Swedish progressive djent metal band Vildhjarta. The narrative that appears out of the intermedial cooperation between the medias is then analyzed with literal studies and narratological concepts to put intermedial studies into a bigger context. This essay also explores different intertextual connections to other works of literature which shows is quite a lot. Since previous research about progressive metal and the band Vildhjarta is practically nonexistent research from the closely related genres of black metal and death metal have been applied to create a new base of previous research. The research in this essay concludes that Vildhjarta, in sometimes complex ways, use different medias to create and amplify the narrative and they also include a lot of different intertextual connections.

Skumtroll och vårskrik över mediegränser : En intermedial studie av Ronja Rövardotter om överskridanden mellan människa, språk och natur / Murktrolls and the Scream of Spring across Media Borders : An Intermedial Analysis of Astrid Lindgren’s Ronja the Robber’s Daughter

Nyfeler, Åsa January 2023 (has links)
This master's thesis investigates the transmediations of Astrid Lindgren's Ronja the Robber's Daughter into a feature film by Tage Danielsson and an anime by Goro Miyazaki. Drawing on intermedial theory and analytical method, the analysis explores how the creatures called “murktrolls” and Ronja’s “scream of spring” are portrayed across these media adaptations. The thesis draws on Lars Elleström’s intermedial concepts, specifically the concept of “media transformation”. The analysis reveals how Danielsson condenses the presence of murktrolls, replacing them with “rumphumbs” and “grey dwarfs”, whereas Miyazaki expands the depiction of these mythical creatures. Both adaptations extend the significance of the “scream of spring”. The analysis can point towards a connection between murktrolls and the scream of spring, symbolizing themes of life, identity quest, and inspiration. Ilon Wikland's illustrations serve as pivotal source material, influencing the transmediations. In sum, the study highlights the dynamic interaction between the source and target media products. Kondo's anime images are notably grounded in Wikland's illustrations. By publishing the novel with these new images, that is adding a new version of the novel, the work is enriched, deepening the connection between the anime and the novel. There is also an interaction between the anime and the feature film; many details are transferred from the film to the anime. The thesis demonstrates that each transmediation shapes the overall understanding of the work by accentuating specific details from the novel. The anime and feature film, along with each reading of the novel, collectively reconstruct the narrative. These findings underscore the significance of transmediation, drawing attention to essential themes within the novel.

“My skin has turned from ivory, to porcelain, to steel.”

Laane, Cara January 2022 (has links)
The point of this essay was to conduct research on the market and the consumers influence over the cultural industry in regard to adaptations. The paper analyses some of the changes that can be done by the producers in order to please the consumer, and therefore increase the popularity among the viewers. The analyse has studied how the adapted works; The Walking Dead, A Game of Thrones/ A Song of Ice and Fire, Legend of the Seeker/ Sword of Truth, has implemented changes when it comes to three matters; motherhood, looks and character development. Furthermore, the paper analyses how these changes may affect the plot, and how the viewers have reacted to this. The thesis is based on Pascal Lefèvre’s adaptation research and John Fiske’s popular culture study. The consumer’s opinions regarding the TV-shows and what changes they wish to see in movies and TV-shows are expressed through comments on YouTube and Reddit. /
Slutgiltigt godkännandedatum: 2022-06-10
