The influence of cultural diversity on the effectiveness of Virtual Software Development Teams

Loskutova, Tetyana 31 July 2014 (has links)
A Virtual Software Development Team (VSDT) is a group team of Information Technology (IT) professionals working together to produce a software product and collaborating remotely with the use of information communication technology. In a VSDT, face-to-face contact is seldom required in order for these teams to fulfil their tasks. VSDTs in the software development business offer advantages compared to co-located teams which include the availability of a global talent pool, lower costs and a global presence. However, many aspects of managing these teams are still undiscovered and under-researched. Among them is the influence of cultural diversity on the work, productivity and sustainability of a VSDT. The purpose of this research was to define the main factors of the influence of cultural diversity on the effectiveness of a VSDT. The research was undertaken from an interpretive perspective. In agreement with this paradigm, the effectiveness factors were limited to the internal effectiveness of a team as perceived by its members. In order to define the factors of cultural diversity, existing theories of cultural diversity in a co-located workplace were used. I have conducted interviews with software developers, support professionals and their managers to probe the relevance of the existing theories in a virtual software development environment and to find other possible factors. In this research, a specific ’internet nerd’ culture was discovered which exists among the members of the virtual (internet) community. The members of this culture comfortably accept virtual work and share a lot of common context. The findings show the importance of frequent communication, emotional sharing and occasional face-to-face contact in bonding the team, building trust and understanding. From the team management perspective, there is evidence that agile methodologies can be used successfully in the virtual environment. The results of this research are beneficial for businesses looking to implement VSDTs, and can be used as a basis for the development of a theory of cultural diversity in a virtual environment.

Viešojo administravimo institucijų interneto portalų komoderavimo modeliai / Comoderation models of the internet portals of public administration institutions

Beinoras, Martynas 21 December 2006 (has links)
Operative feedback between authors of publications and readers as well as between readers themselves determines considerable growth of portals with commenting functions. Unfortunately, the advantages of commenting are not used in the portals of public institutions. Therefore, this paper surveys internet commenting influence in the e-democracy development, involving the communities into decision making processes. The paper investigates, if the electronic discussions can support realization of principles of publicity, society interests importance and community involvement into the public management, mainly highlighted in theory of public administration and new public management. The main problem, why commenting functions are not being deployed in the portals of institutions, is inefficiency of commenting process regulation. So far used methods of comments regulation – simple moderation and automoderation – are inefficient (slow, subjective) when there are huge amount of users, consequently, these methods do not fit to the portals of public institutions. This paper surveys new method of commenting regulation – comoderation – which is based on user self-regulation and comment rating, consequently, more efficient. So, adopting of comoderation in the portals could provide a powerful tool for fast and purposeful changing of ideas between officials and citizens. The investigation of commenting and comment rating needs in the portals of institutions is performed due to purpose to... [to full text]

"Where Everyone Waddles Like Me": An examination of the autistic community on Tumblr.com

Kirkconnell, Andrew January 2019 (has links)
I hope this can be used for a greater good than pure study. / This study used a novel combination of interview methodologies, made possible through the nature of instant messaging, and ethnographic methods in order to determine the value of the autistic community on Tumblr.com to its members. Ethnographic study yielded insights about the dialectic quality of any community on Tumblr, autistic community included, as well as the sense of autonomy users have on the site that is different if not greater than what they may practice in the physical world. Interview data suggest a neutral to positive view of the community and its culture overall, though further research with a greater sample of participants is required in order to confirm these findings. Information can be shared quickly between members, and this information provides greater insight into a given user’s autism, be it diagnosed or otherwise, or insight into navigating the neurotypical world. Autism positivity and neurodiversity advocacy is common among participants and the blogs they subscribe to, popularising the idea thereof in the mainstream while validating the identity of autistic people online and offline. This ethos makes its way into more casual site discussions, with memes and other entertainment being shaped by these experiences. The autistic community on Tumblr is an excellent example of a modern biosocial community online, and serves as Hacking’s engine of normalisation both on the site outside of the autistic community and in the physical world through real life events and adoption of site terminology and discourse. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / Using a purpose-built blog to learn about site culture and a series of online interviews to discover participant experiences, this study explores the culture of the autistic community on Tumblr and its impact on its members. The autistic community on Tumblr is a place that its members have more freedom to act and express themselves (through art, videos, shared stories etc.) than in the physical world. Through being a way to vent difficult experiences, get information, and enjoy site content made by and for them (in addition to broader appeal media), site users report a neutral to positive effect on their overall quality of life because of the site. Further research is required to confirm any of the patterns in the work.
