A Study to Determine the Understanding of the Nature and Mission of Jesus Christ by Third Year Seminary Graduates of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Baker, Terry R. 01 January 1973 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study was to determine what degree of understanding third year graduates of the SLVN Seminary District had of the nature and mission of Christ. The study was composed of a random sample of 200 third year seminary graduates. Each participant answered a questionnaire designed to test his understanding of the nature and mission of Christ. The responses were tabulated and presented in written and illustrative form. The students met the minimum established standard of 75% in four of the five concepts which they were questioned concerning the nature of Christ. The students met the minimum established standard in five of the eight concepts testing their understanding of the mission of Christ.Overall comprehension of both the nature and mission of Christ were considered adequate as the students averaged 80% correct responses to all questions.

[en] INTERPRETATIONS OF BRAZIL, CONTEMPORARY (DE)FORMATIONS / [pt] INTERPRETAÇÕES DO BRASIL, (DE)FORMAÇÃO CONTEMPORÂNEAS

VICTOR COUTINHO LAGE 11 October 2016 (has links)
[en] The dissertation deals with writings from the XX century grouped under the notion of interpretations of Brazil , focusing on their uses of the concept of formation . I have identified five traces exposed in those uses: (1) the centrality of the nation; (2) the incompleteness of the transition from the colonial to the modern condition, marking a coexistence of the old and the new; (3) the internal inequality within the country; (4) the mobilization of external parameters in the definition of Brazil; and (5) the focus on the specificities of Brazilian formative process. These five traces are shared by all the texts selected; but, at the same time, they are expressed in different ways according to each text. Part I stresses the recurrence of the concept of formation in the interpretations of Brazil (chapter 2); after that, it lays out general lines of the perspective from which the uses of formation will be interpreted in the texts selected (chapter 3). Part II (chapters 4-12) is devoted to the interpretations of the texts, focusing on the uses of formation and those five traces previously mentioned. Part III begins with a controversy that took place mainly in the late 1980s and that is expressive of many aspects raised in Part II (chapter 13); then, it tackles three interpreters of Brazil that have advanced, in different ways, efforts similar to the one I will embrace myself in the last part of the text, that is, an alternative interpretation of the formation of contemporary Brazil from some kind of engagement with previous interpretations of Brazil (chapters 14-16). Finally, Part IV (chapter 17) builds on the previous discussion, in order to reflect upon, or theorize from, the five traces of formation in the interpretations of Brazil .

Toward Error-Statistical Principles of Evidence in Statistical Inference

Jinn, Nicole Mee-Hyaang 02 June 2014 (has links)
The context for this research is statistical inference, the process of making predictions or inferences about a population from observation and analyses of a sample. In this context, many researchers want to grasp what inferences can be made that are valid, in the sense of being able to uphold or justify by argument or evidence. Another pressing question among users of statistical methods is: how can spurious relationships be distinguished from genuine ones? Underlying both of these issues is the concept of evidence. In response to these (and similar) questions, two questions I work on in this essay are: (1) what is a genuine principle of evidence? and (2) do error probabilities have more than a long-run role? Concisely, I propose that felicitous genuine principles of evidence should provide concrete guidelines on precisely how to examine error probabilities, with respect to a test's aptitude for unmasking pertinent errors, which leads to establishing sound interpretations of results from statistical techniques. The starting point for my definition of genuine principles of evidence is Allan Birnbaum's confidence concept, an attempt to control misleading interpretations. However, Birnbaum's confidence concept is inadequate for interpreting statistical evidence, because using only pre-data error probabilities would not pick up on a test's ability to detect a discrepancy of interest (e.g., "even if the discrepancy exists" with respect to the actual outcome. Instead, I argue that Deborah Mayo's severity assessment is the most suitable characterization of evidence based on my definition of genuine principles of evidence. / Master of Arts

Artist as subject : subject as object

Cruise, Wilma 09 1900 (has links)
The artist uses herself as the object of study. Her subjective position is validated within a theoretical framework provided by feminism, existentialism and Freudian theory. The three world views provide the context for an analysis of sculpture produced between the years 1988 and 1997. Three one-person exhibitions held in 1990, 1993 and 1996, are examined in terms of their iconographic emphasis and their theoretical bias. The role of the unconscious in the genesis of the sculptures and the problem of author/reader dichotomies in interpretation are dealt with as thematic threads throughout the dissertation. / Department of History of Art and Fine Arts / M.A. (Fine Arts)

Kommunal samhällsbyggnad och demokratins flexibla väktare : - En studie om tjänstemännens förändrade arbete inom samhällsbyggnadsprocessen i Norrköpings kommun

Fredriksson, Oscar January 2016 (has links)
Municipal urban management and the democratic flexible guardian – a study concerning the officials’ changing work in the urban management process in the municipality of Norrköping. The purpose of this study is partly to analyse how implement measures in a change project (in the municipality of Norrköping) may impact the officials, linked to the urban management process, in their work practices. The study also aims to problematize a political science theory by Professor Lennart Lundquist (from 1998) that states how officials should relate to their office. The reason behind this problematizing stems from a shift in the municipalities’ responsibilities over the last 20 years. They have gone from having a more exclusively administrative responsibility to focus more on societal investment. The analysis of this study shows that a lot of the implement measures have a positive impact on the officials’ work practices, although some risks were found. The study also indicates that the imbalance between economical and democratic values (that is addressed in Lundquist’s theory) tend to even themselves out in order for a more sustainable development to be achieved.

A Comparative View of the Development of a Myth in Stendhal's "Le Rouge et le noir" and Flaubert's "Madame Bovary"

Myers, Kenneth Wayne 08 1900 (has links)
The study is a comparative analysis of Stendhal's romantic interpretation and Flaubert's realistic interpretation of outdated myths. The first purpose of the study is to reveal the linear development of Julien Sorel and Emma Bovary in quest of their respective myths. The second is to reveal technical devices used by the authors that lead to diverse interpretations of the myths. The sources of data used in the study are Le Rouge et le noir and Madame Bovary and secondary materials concerning the two novels. The study is divided into five chapters including an introduction, two chapters that develop Julien's and Emma's respective myths, a chapter concerning technical devices used in the novels and a conclusion.

Modeling Preferences for Ambiguous Utterance Interpretations / Modélisation de préférences pour l'interprétation d'énoncés ambigus

Mirzapour, Mehdi 28 September 2018 (has links)
The problem of automatic logical meaning representation for ambiguous natural language utterances has been the subject of interest among the researchers in the domain of computational and logical semantics. Ambiguity in natural language may be caused in lexical/syntactical/semantical level of the meaning construction or it may be caused by other factors such as ungrammaticality and lack of the context in which the sentence is actually uttered. The traditional Montagovian framework and the family of its modern extensions have tried to capture this phenomenon by providing some models that enable the automatic generation of logical formulas as the meaning representation. However, there is a line of research which is not profoundly investigated yet: to rank the interpretations of ambiguous utterances based on the real preferences of the language users. This gap suggests a new direction for study which is partially carried out in this dissertation by modeling meaning preferences in alignment with some of the well-studied human preferential performance theories available in the linguistics and psycholinguistics literature. In order to fulfill this goal, we suggest to use/extend Categorial Grammars for our syntactical analysis and Categorial Proof Nets as our syntactic parse. We also use Montagovian Generative Lexicon for deriving multi-sorted logical formula as our semantical meaning representation. This would pave the way for our five-folded contributions, namely, (i) ranking the multiple-quantifier scoping by means of underspecified Hilbert's epsilon operator and categorial proof nets; (ii) modeling the semantic gradience in sentences that have implicit coercions in their meanings. We use a framework called Montagovian Generative Lexicon. Our task is introducing a procedure for incorporating types and coercions using crowd-sourced lexical data that is gathered by a serious game called JeuxDeMots; (iii) introducing a new locality-based referent-sensitive metrics for measuring linguistic complexity by means of Categorial Proof Nets; (iv) introducing algorithms for sentence completions with different linguistically motivated metrics to select the best candidates; (v) and finally integration of different computational metrics for ranking preferences in order to make them a unique model.

The LIDAR system provides georeferrenced clouds with thousand-to-million of points which can be converted in digital outcrops models. A laser beam is emitted and captured by a laser scanner after reaching an outcrop in many different positions. Based on the travel time between sensor and outcrop it is possible to determine the position of each point with high accuracy. This technique is still a novelty for applied studies in Geology, especially in Digital Outcrop Models (DOMs), being necessary research and development. Thus, the goal of this work was establish a workflow concerning acquisition and processing of point clouds, and visualization and geological interpretation of DOMs. The Pedra Pintada, located in the state Rio Grande do Sul in the city Caçapava do Sul outcrop was imaged from seven different stations and the cloud has 17 million points, converted in a DOM after processing. The geological interpretation was made possible by the orthorectification technique, in which a high resolution photograph overlies the point cloud and the visual quality is obtained. The huge volume of data, the lack of optimized processing resources and the inadequate dataset management became visualization and interpretation of DOMs a difficult task. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop a software with an efficient tridimensional visualization system with specific tools for geological interpretations.

Aggiornamento ou fumaça de Satanás: interpretações sobre o Concílio Vaticano II no catolicismo brasileiro / Aggiornamento or smoke of Satan: interpretations of the Second Vatican Council in Brazilian Catholicism

No. of bitstreams: 1 Alfredo Moreira da Silva Junior.pdf: 8296243 bytes, checksum: c09d5d8386ad365339124d76c6f7401b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-10-22 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Second Vatican Council represented the greatest event of the Church in the twentieth century and caused changes and effects that extend to the present. The documents produced by this event has been over time, the object of discussion between conservatives and progressives, whether of the clergy or the laity. The historical context which the announcement occurred, preparation, realization and reception of the Council, may somehow contribute to a better understanding of the course of events, the scope and purpose of this event either at European level, either in Latin American or Brazilian. In the latter case, the need for changes and adaptation of the Church to the "new times", was accompanied by a growing tension between the Church and the military regime, which, somehow, became the preferential option for the poor on a flag not only pastoral but also politics. However, the council was not perceived the same way by different interest groups inside the church, and this thesis seeks to demonstrate exactly how such antagonistic interpretations of the same event occurred. To make possible such intent, we used the concepts of representations proposed by Chartier and "the world of the text and the reader's world" _ present in the hermeneutics proposal of Ricoeur / O Concílio Vaticano II representou o maior acontecimento da Igreja no Século XX e provocou mudanças e efeitos que se estendem até a atualidade.
