Usability – Who Cares? : The Introduction of User-Centred Systems Design in Organisations

Cajander, Åsa January 2010 (has links)
This thesis analyses the difficulties encountered in the promotion of usability, especially in relation to occupation health issues, when developing IT systems in a public authority. It examines what happens when User-Centred Systems Design (UCSD) approaches are introduced to organisations with in-house systems development for their employees. It studies how stakeholder values affect the outcomes in terms of usability, occupational health, and institutional acceptance. Moreover, new methods are examined and evaluated as potential tools for assisting the adoption of UCSD. These methods are for example Field studies for system developers, Usability coaching for stakeholders and Management views of usability. A stated aim is to influence systems development in practice. Hence an action research paradigm has been employed, carrying out research and change in real life settings, gathering and analysing data using qualitative techniques. This thesis is based on a constructivist perspective, where theories in the areas of learning and organisational change have been used in order to better understand the research questions. The research demonstrates that most people are enthusiastic to, and interested in, UCSD with a focus on the computerised work environment. Many of the stakeholder groups, such as managers, users, project managers and system developers, changed their construct of identity as well as practice when UCSD was introduced. However, this research shows that there are several values that affect systems development and hinder usability work. These include for example value of rationality and objectivity, and differing values and perspectives underpinning descriptions and discourse on work and systems development. Values such as automation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction shape the development of new technology, and ultimately the tasks, work practices integrated in IT systems. Moreover, the results demonstrate that even though many consider usability as important, few take active responsibility for it, as the title of this thesis suggests.

Kronman, Celie January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this scientific essay is to illuminate perceptions and interpretations about children's deviant behavior and how it affects the educators attitudes towards these children. The starting point for the essay is two different self-perceived situations where I experienced that "deviant" behavior and behaviors that causes trouble, referred to as “trouble-making” behaviors, quickly and carelessly identifies as consequences of the neuropsychiatric disability ADHD. The “diagnosis-label” creates a feeling of uncertainty for me because I know from experience that it provides more support and understanding of children's behaviors. At the same time, the instant association to ADHD leads to disregarding of other factors that generate "trouble-making" behaviors. The "problems" are not always connected to a disability, but a diagnosis of a disability provides, in reality, faster, more structured and well-designed support for the child compared to a child who shows "trouble-making" behaviors without a diagnosis. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate other circumstances that can create "trouble-making" behaviors and question function of the diagnosis as a creator of greater understanding of these behaviors. I would like to highlight different perspectives of behaviors that are perceived as deviating and negative, to create opportunities for educators to provide children support without the need of a disability to explain the reason why the child needs support. Greater knowledge of children's "trouble-making" behaviors can lead to more personalized support actions for the child, and to an understanding of how interpretations and prejudices influence children's ability to develop advantageous strategies for managing individual difficulties. The survey is based on the questions: What is “abnormal behavior” in preschool children? Can there be other causes of "trouble-making" behaviors than consequences of a neuropsychiatric disfunction? What significance does a formal diagnosis have for preschool children?

The judgement on each one dead : Archaeological and ideological approaches to Iron Age Scandinavia

Gahm, Fredrik January 2018 (has links)
This thesis deals with the image of the Vikings. I wish to investigate how this image came to being during the 19th and early 20th century and give examples of how the Viking age was approached archaeologically during this time period. In addition to this, I discuss the image of the Vikings in relation to concepts such as nationalism, Scandinavian identity and how we use history. The aim is to contribute to the discourse about ideology in relation to history. I wish to raise awareness about how we use history and how our evaluation of the past, in this case the Viking age, affects our perception of the past and the present. I have chosen three archaeological sites in order to exemplify how archaeologists have approached the Viking age, and how archaeology can be linked to ideology. These sites are Old Uppsala and Birka in Sweden, and Hedeby in present-day Germany. In addition to this, I also discuss what role the Viking age played in the 19th century world of ideas. I read and analyse publications on the topic from different time periods and contexts. The theories used are those of Stefan Bohman, Benedict Anderson and Lise Nordenborg Myhre on nationalism and its symbolism. The discussion is also based on Evert Baudou’s theories on archaeological interpretations, as well as the theoretical framework characteristic of the 19th century, culture-historical archaeology. The Viking age played an important part in shaping a Scandinavian identity, particularly in Sweden. The loss of Finland to Russia in 1809 created a need of a new identity. In the wake of this, as well as deepened relations to Norwegians and Danes, a new ideology called scandinavism was formed with the Viking age at centre. Later, the Iron Age was of significance when the German Nazi regime needed to legitimise their policies and ideology. The excavations at Hedeby mirror the Nazi ideology, but the Swedish sites have also proven to have connections to nationalism, both at the time of excavation but also in the form of interpretation. I base my analysis on the phenomena explanation, consolidation and rejection in order to establish how the past can be used in defining the present in relation to the past. I discuss how the past is used to define the present, ourselves and our society and how it is can be used in a nationalistic setting.

However, it took a long time for this concept to be incorporated in economic models. In this survey, we review the consequences and insights provided by recent models. Since disagreement between market agents can be generated through different hypotheses, the main differences between them are highlighted. Finally, this work concludes with a short review of nowcasting using google trends, emphasizing advances connecting both literatures.

Artist as subject : subject as object

Cruise, Wilma 09 1900 (has links)
The artist uses herself as the object of study. Her subjective position is validated within a theoretical framework provided by feminism, existentialism and Freudian theory. The three world views provide the context for an analysis of sculpture produced between the years 1988 and 1997. Three one-person exhibitions held in 1990, 1993 and 1996, are examined in terms of their iconographic emphasis and their theoretical bias. The role of the unconscious in the genesis of the sculptures and the problem of author/reader dichotomies in interpretation are dealt with as thematic threads throughout the dissertation. / Department of History of Art and Fine Arts / M.A. (Fine Arts)

"Cresceu como um renovo" (Is.53,20): o sistema simbólico ritual judaico do tempo de Jesus, uma das principais raízes do cristianismo

Glacilda Soares da Silva Carvalho 17 August 2009 (has links)
The theme the jewish ritual symbolic system from Jesus‟ time, one of the primitive Christianity‟s main roots and its self-affirmation as religion involves an analysis of the ritual elements which guided the Judaism from the Jesus‟ time and that was used as a base to the primitive Christianity appearance. This work will consider the jewish religious cultural system from the first century of the Christian time and how it influenced the ritual symbolic system of primitive Christian signs, which begings with Jesus Himself. We are going to start with an approach about the religion, searching a huge vision of the cultural phenomenon and the religion function. The main focus turns around three poles: The jewish ritual symbolic system from the Jesus‟ time, as one of the primitive Christianity‟s main roots, the importance of the historical Jesus to the raise of the primitive Christian religion and the transformation of the jewish religion through the post-paschal faith in Christ. The historical Jesus is, from the post-paschal faith on, the presence of the primordial creator and the eschatological judge. He is one with God. The primitive Christian religion, from that time on, is going to find ways to become an autonomous religion, reusing the essence of the ritual symbolic system of jewish signs, and giving them a new meaning from Jesus on

Neste sentido, nosso principal objetivo é descrever como a interpretação teológica, pautada pela alegoria factual, torna-se elemento cênico e poético na constituição das referidas peças / Abstract: The present dissertation analyzes three vicentines¿ works ¿ Auto da Sibila Cassandra (1512/13?), Breve Sumário da História de Deus (1527?) and Auto da Cananéia (1534) ¿, which present important analogies with the liturgics representation of the end of Medieval Times and assimilate a theological vision of the History characterized for the presence of the factual allegory. This is, as known, central element of a biblical interpretation¿s method, already known in the Christian Antiquity, which the Old Testament is a preview of the New, the comprehension of both making possible the apprehension of the futures happenings. In the vicentines¿ works, it is incorporated as part (element) of the composition. In this way, the main objective is to describe how theological interpretation, marked for the factual allegory, becomes poetic and scenic element in the construction of the plays / Mestrado / Literatura Portuguesa / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária

Death and the Self : A Metaphysical Investigation of the Rationality of Afterlife Beliefs in the Contemporary Intellectual Climate

Eddebo, Johan January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation's purpose is to test the hypothesis that beliefs in the possibility of post-mortem survival can be rationally held within the context of the contemporary scientific and philosophical environment. In terms of criteria of rationality, a basic evidentialism is assumed, such that propositions which are sufficiently supported by the available evidence can be rationally held. With regard to the compatibility with contemporary science and philosophy, it follows as a further criterion that the relevant evidence must be satisfactorily anchored within the framework of these traditions. The relevant evidence concerns two levels. First, the basic level of the conceptual coherence of afterlife beliefs is addressed, so that the logical possibility of post-mortem survival can be established. Secondly, the viability of the metaphysics which are implied in the support of the logical possibility (i.e. the metaphysics needed to actualize post-mortem survival) is defended, establishing the metaphysical possibility of post-mortem survival. At this stage, reductive physicalism, which is the only position that effectively undermines post-mortem survival, is criticized, and the problem of interaction which burdens several of the survival-enabling ontologies is addressed. As for the criterion of scientific compatibility, it is further shown that contemporary physics are compatible with the survival-enabling metaphysics, and that contemporary physics can be argued to provide a moderate positive relevance with regard to these positions. The conclusion drawn is that belief in the possibility of post-mortem survival is not only rationally permissible within the framework of contemporary science and philosophy, but also rationally obligatory, i.e. that this possibility cannot rationally be denied with regard to the reviewed evidence.

Motivy a důsledky "velkého teroru" v SSSR 1936-1938 v historické diskusi / Motives and Results of The Great Terror in the USSR 1936-1938 in historic discussion

Černý, Mikuláš January 2009 (has links)
The diploma thesis called "Motives and Results of The Great Terror in the USSR 1936-1938 in historic discussion" analyzes in broad terms progression of the scientific discussion in an international scientific world on one of the most important of Soviet history. It means bloody purges in late thirties. In the strict sense the diploma thesis has to assess two aspects of world's scholarship on this topic. Motives of the great purges and results of repressive policy in qualitative and quantitative terms. A special attention is to be given to a problem of eventual ideological approach of scholars. This paper has to present a main trends in global research of "The Great Terror" and stalinism respectively too. Next: to study an effect of objective circumstancies on the research (particularly fall of the USSR and so called archive revolution in 1991). A final part writes on contemporary achievement in a global research and on meanings of narrow problems 1936-1938 in a stalinism research in whole. Last word is dedicated to an relations of academia public to changes in terms of an official interpretations of history of stalinism in the Russian Federation.
