Begränsad nyhetsrapportering i en obegränsad verklighet : En studie av svenska tidningars skildringar av Kataloniens självständighetsprocess

Frölén Åström, Melker January 2022 (has links)
In October 2017, the Spanish region Catalonia held a referendum vote on independence, but was not able to declare independence because of a strong opposition from the central government in Madrid. For the news media there are different ways to describe an event like this and these ways might have different outcomes on those who take part of the news. With a background inthe Catalan independence movement and the democratic role of news media, the aim of this study is to examine how Swedish newspapers in their reporting shaped the independence process, before and after the referendumOctober 1st 2017, to determine any shift in the reporting. With a qualitative text analysis, the study examines 16 newspaper articles in relation to framing theory to determine which forms of framings that were used. This study finds that Swedish newspapers shapes the independence process as strategy- or issue framed, with the strategy frame appearing once more in the reporting after the referendum than before.

Katalonien : En fallstudie om Katalansk nationalism under och efter Francoregimen / Catalonia : A case study about Catalan nationalism during and after the Franco regim

Bordier, Ofelia January 2018 (has links)
This qualitative theory consuming case study will explore why nationalism has developed in Catalonia and how it has expressed itself during and after the regime of Francisco Franco. Nationalism is an old and well-established theory that has resurrected again in Catalonia. Nationalism can be divided in two forms, either it is ethnically based, or based on citizenship. The ethnic form includes shared language, culture, territory and history whilst the one based in citizenship includes social, political and economic interests. The areas that will be studied within Catalan nationalism are: language, geography, culture and economy. The essay will also explore actors and structures within Catalonia. The essay concludes that nationalism in Catalonia is more ethnic and has developed thanks to specific characteristics such as language, culture and history. The Catalan nationalism has expressed itself through autonomy and economic integrity and the main force behind nationalism is actors.

Actitudes hacia el catalán : un estudio sociolingüístico de principiantes del catalán en Barcelona / Language Attitudes towards Catalan : A Sociolinguistic Study of Beginners in Catalan in Barcelona

Westin, Emil January 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on the Catalan language of Catalonia, a region located in the east of Spain. There are many immigrants living in this region who decide to learn the Catalan language in hope of finding a job or to integrate in the Catalan society. The main aim of this study was to discover the types of language attitudes the beginners of Catalan show towards this language (general, instrumental and integrative attitudes). Language attitudes are of importance because it can indicate the “health” of a minority language, such as is usually considered Catalan. The method applied was direct, where the informants had to answer a written questionnaire. The results of the study show positive attitudes towards the Catalan language and its general use in Catalonia. The main conclusions of the study were that the informants showed positive and slightly more instrumental attitudes towards Catalan, indicating that the main motive of learning the language was more of practical use than integrative motives.

Spanish lo que pasa es que and its variants in Getxo and Barcelona

Paasch-Kaiser, Christine, Sinner, Carsten 25 June 2024 (has links)
The Spanish construction lo que pasa es que ‘what happens is that’, ‘the thing is’ is used in a wide variety of contexts and with a range of different meanings. Linguistic research that has been carried out on this relatively common construction often fails to include empirically collected data and, as a result, the diasystematic markers thereof have only been described to a very limited extent. The main focus of this article is to investigate the use of the construction lo que pasa es que and its phonetically reduced forms lo que pasa que and lo que in two Spanishlanguage oral speech corpora collected in Getxo (Basque Country) and Barcelona (Catalonia). These data are used to carry out a quantitative and qualitative study of the presence or absence of this construction in both regions of language contact, something which has yet to be considered or systematically analysed in the relevant research. The study identifies a statistically relevant diatopic markedness of the forms lo que pasa es que, lo que pasa and pasa que while also providing empirical proof for the pragmatic use of these constructions within the varieties investigated. Furthermore, it confirms the use of additional reduced forms of said constructions and describes their development.

'I'm from Barcelona': Boundaries and Transformations Between Catalan and Spanish Identities

Drew, Liesl January 2017 (has links)
In the last decade or so, the multiple political factions in Catalonia have adopted pro-independence initiatives in their platforms following the 2008 financial crisis. Catalonia’s position as representing a minority culture in the face of the centralized administration of Madrid presents a contentious history of fighting for the right ‘to be’, culminating in what today is viewed by many as an identity crisis.              Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Barcelona, this thesis examines how informants construct and transform their socio-cultural identities in the framework of the independence movement in Catalonia. It places informants’ experiences in the theoretical realm of ethnic boundaries, analyzing central issues of Catalan language normalization vis à vis the historical imposition of Spanish as the national language. These themes are broadened in light of the recent upsurge of Catalan secession, and explores identity politics within the background of Spanish and Catalan nationalisms.
