Employment in New Firms : Mobility and Labour Market Outcomes

Zhetibaeva Elvung, Gulzat January 2016 (has links)
This thesis studies the role of new firms in the labour market and uses Swedish data to analyze labour mobility in new firms, including both transitions of workers into and from new firms. In particular, it focuses on employees’ wages in new firms and post-new firm employment labour market outcomes as transitions into long-term employment and entrepreneurship. This thesis consists of four essays. The first two essays concern labour mobility into new firms. The last two essays focus on post-new firm employment mobility. The first essay explores the role of new firms as an entry point into the labour market for individuals with little (or no) labour market experience. The findings show that the wage penalty found in previous research, which includes more heterogeneous groups of employees, decreases once the focus is solely on labour market entrants. The second essay investigates whether there is a wage penalty for being employed at a new firm if the individual employee’s experience and status in the labour market are taken into account; this essay focuses on individuals who decide to switch jobs. The findings show that there is a wage penalty for being employed at a new firm; however, considering a random selection into new firms may underestimate the wage differentials. The third essay studies the role that new firms play for the career path of their employees. In particular, this paper analyzes whether short-term employment in new firms (employment lasting less than one year) may serve as a stepping stone toward long-term employment (at least two years of employment with the same employer) for non-employed individuals. The findings indicate that short-term employment in new firms may serve as a stepping stone toward long-term employment. The fourth paper examines the new firm effect on entrepreneurship, which the findings indicate is positive and statistically significant; this effect remains even after controlling for a worker's ability and shows that employees with both high and low levels of ability may transition to entrepreneurship. /
QC 20160916

Foreign direct investment : causes and consequences : the determinants of inward and outward FDI and their relationship with economic growth

Zang, Wenyu January 2012 (has links)
This thesis complements current studies by focusing on developed OECD countries as they are the major sources and recipients of world FDI and current studies relating to developed countries using aggregate country FDI data are limited. This study empirically tests the determinants of FDI inflows and outflows and their relationship with economic growth using 2SLS simultaneous equations model between 1981 and 2008 for a sample of 20 developed OECD countries. The empirical findings suggest that FDI inflows do not contribute to economic growth in the host country and economic growth positively affects FDI inflows. In addition, trade openness and flexible employment protection legislation in the host country attract FDI inflows. In terms of FDI outflows, the results show that FDI outflows reduce economic growth in the home country, while economic growth in the home country increases FDI outflows. Moreover, high past level of outward FDI stock, trade openness, low labour cost and currency depreciation in the home country provide incentives for domestic firms to invest abroad. Therefore, this study does not support offering special incentives to foreign investors to attract FDI inflows or offering promotional policies to domestic firms to encourage FDI outflows. Instead, government should provide incentives for domestic investment and other sound policies to increase economic growth, which in itself provides a good environment to attract FDI inflows and to encourage FDI outflows. Keywords: FDI inflows, FDI outflows, two stage least squares simultaneous equations, economic growth, labour market flexibility.

Dontigny Morin, Marie-Élaine 09 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis assesses the underlying dynamics in the cognitive enhancement phenomenon observed in Western contemporary universities and the social context in which it emerges. Detaching our perspective from the analysis of healthcare and law fields of study as well as from the usual quantitative, clinical, atheoretical and over all moralizing approach, we aimed to explore the use of psychotropic substances in humanities and social science students, to better understand the rationales behind those behaviours and to situate them in their broader context. Thirteen humanities and social science students were interviewed regarding their past or present use of psychotropics as cognitive enhancers in academia. Results suggest a gap between their practices and those of the healthcare and law students, in that a wider variety of psychotropics are used as enhancers ; it also shows that the use of cognitive enhancers parts from the medical logic as well as that of addiction. First, the students’ practices are often oriented by an existential disorientation and it seems that their resort to psychotropics assists a quest for control, understanding and stability in themselves and in a world perceived as perpetually unstable. Furthermore, those practices serve a wish to satisfy a range of uncertain and threatening conditions related to external demands as apprehended, more than to treat any medical condition regarding cognition. We believe that the underlying rationales behind the humanities and social science university students use of psychotropics fit into the performance oriented contemporary discourse and injunctions in the sense that their individual suffering exposes the limits of what society expects from them.

Pracovní trh v EU / Labour market in the European Union

Juříček, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
The graduation thesis consists of two parts. The first part deals with the general operation of the labour market and the key principles and factors occurring in this area, such as the subsistence wage or the activities of trade unions. Special attention deserves the issue of unemployment and public employment policy. In the second part, the general information of the previous section is inserted into the framework of a particular economic situation and the evolution of unemployment in the European Union during the last decade. An important role is played by taking various forms of national employment policy and social policy which are dealt with separately. The same attention is paid to the main EU institutions and strategies that seek to eliminate negative phenomena occurring on the European market.

Právní úprava zaměstnanosti a zabezpečení v nezaměstnanosti v České republice / Legal regulation of employment and unemployment welfare in the Czech Republic

Pastuszek, Marek January 2015 (has links)
Legal regulation of employment and security against unemployment in the Czech Republic The issues connected with unemployment deserve big amount of attention, because they can cause some serious problems in the society. This thesis is aimed to analyse legal regulation of employment and security against unemployment in the Czech Republic. Within the process of its creation I have also worked with various legal instruments and commented on their functionality. The thesis is composed of nine chapters. Chapter one characterises right to work and right to employment and explains the difference between these terms. In this chapter I have also widely dealt with international legal documents, which contain right to work. Chapter two focuses on unemployment, its kinds, rate and development over past few decades in the Czech Republic. I have emphasised the consequences of unemployment on individuals and society. Chapter three briefly summarizes conception and functions of labour law and then focuses on goals of state employment policy in the Czech Republic and entities, which participate in its execution. Chapter four deals with arrangement of employment by Labour office and labour agencies. It emphasizes obligations that applicant for a job has to fulfil to use this service. In this chapter I have also tried to...

Analyse théorique et empirique de la théorie de la recherche d'emploi : un essai de modélisation du Revenu de Solidarité Active / Empirical and theorical analysis of job search theory : essai of modeling the french Active Solidarity Income

Talarowski, David 24 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents the job-search model, starting from the elementary model to reach a model analyzing mechanisms designed to enhance employment recovery. This study concerns the French active solidarity income mechanism (Revenu de Solidarité Active or RSA). The first part will allow us to implement the theoretical elements we will need in the second part. In the first part, we will start with the elementary model, and then widen the debate to more complex models and less restrictive assumptions. We will punctuate this part with empirical analysis based on the 2006 employment survey data. The second art is aimed at analyzing the effects of the RSA on the job search behavior of workers, especially those with low levels of ualification. We will use numerical simulation methods calibrated on the employment survey in order to achieve results.
