A Comprehensive In-Building and Microcellular Wireless Communication System Design Tool

Skidmore, Roger R. 18 August 1997 (has links)
Indoor wireless communication systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in work environments. The need to quickly and efficiently provide in-building and microcellular coverage without sacrificing quality is critical to cellular and emerging personal communication system (PCS) operators. Traditionally, indoor wireless communication system design has been carried out by human experts relying on experience to determine a satisfactory system configuration. This thesis describes the algorithms and technical considerations implemented in a comprehensive propagation planning tool, SMT Plus, which has been designed to predict the coverage regions of both in-building and microcellular wireless communication systems. The goal of SMT Plus is to provide both wireless service providers and equipment manufacturers with an efficient, easy-to-use coverage prediction tool for use in the design of any indoor or campus-wide wireless system. Using site-specific building information combined with on-site signal strength measurements, the tool provides system planners with a highly accurate model of the propagation environment among a group of buildings. SMT Plus provides a comprehensive solution to the planning and installation of wireless communication systems in and around buildings. / Master of Science

Throughput Measurements and Empirical Prediction Models for IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN (WLAN) Installations

Henty, Benjamin E. 19 August 2001 (has links)
Typically a wireless LAN infrastructure is designed and installed by Networking professionals. These individuals are extremely familiar with wired networks, but are often unfamiliar with wireless networks. Thus, Wireless LAN installations are currently handicapped by the lack of an accurate, performance prediction model that is intuitive for use by non-wireless professionals. To provide a solution to this problem, this thesis presents a method of predicting the expected wireless LAN throughput using a site-specific model of an indoor environment. In order to develop this throughput prediction model, two wireless LAN throughput measurement products, LANFielder and SiteSpy, were created. These two products, which are patent pending, allow site-specific network performance measurements to be made. These two software packages were used to conduct an extensive measurement campaign to evaluate the performance of two IEEE 802.11b access points (APs) under ideal, multiuser, and interference scenarios. The data from this measurement campaign was then used to create empirically based throughput prediction models. The resulting models were first developed using RSSI measurements and then confirmed using predicted signal strength parameters. / Master of Science

Physical Layer Design for a Spread Spectrum Wireless LAN

Li, Guoliang 10 September 1996 (has links)
A wireless local area network (LAN) system is proposed to provide mobility for existing data communication services. This thesis presents a physical layer design for a direct sequence spread spectrum ISM band radio LAN system. This radio system employs spread spectrum communication technology and a differential binary phase shift keying/quadrature phase shift keying (BPSK/QPSK) non-coherent receiver to overcome the adverse indoor wireless environment. Moreover, a variable data rate transmission technique is used to dynamically configure the spread spectrum system according to channel performance. This physical layer incorporates the Zilog Z2000 Evaluation Board performing direct sequence spread spectrum processing, a Grayson 900 MHz radio receiver and a transmitter module which was designed and built at Virginia Tech. The transmitted spectrum occupies a 4 MHz bandwidth in the 900 MHz ISM band and this system supports a data rate of up to 363 Kbits/sec. The spread spectrum system design along with detailed descriptions of hardware and control software development are presented. / Master of Science

Laird, Daniel, Temple, Kip 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2006 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Second Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 23-26, 2006 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / The Central Test and Evaluation Investment Program (CTEIP) Integrated Network Enhanced Telemetry (iNET) program is currently testing a wireless local area networking (WLAN) in an L-band telemetry (TM) channel to evaluate the feasibility and capabilities of enhancing traditional TM methods in a seamless wide area network (WAN). Several advantages of networking are real-time command and control of instrumentation formats, quick-look acquisition, data retransmission and recovery (gapless TM) and test point real-time verification. These networking functions, and all others, need to be tested and evaluated. The iNET team is developing a WLAN based on 802.x technologies to test the feasibility of the enhanced telemetry implementation for flight testing.

The objective of this thesis was to investigate the digital culture of young people, identifying the educational aspects of their forms of appropriation of the Internet outside school. The starting point is the concerning about the preconceived idea that the uses which young people make of the Internet outside school are sufficient to prepare them for use demanded by the school. The study of the cultural issue, of school culture and digital culture took as a reference the contributions of Belloni (2008), Bourdieu (1998, 1999), Fourquin (1993), Peixoto (2008, 2009, 2010), among others. To investigate the relationships between technologies and the social, cultural and educational processes, we rely especially on the debate of Buckingham (2000), Castells (1999), Kenski (2007), Sacristán (2007), Sancho, Hernandez (2006) and Santaella (2004). The qualitative type of research consists in the observation of young people using the internet in lan-house situated in the eastern part of the city of Goiania. To accommodate the research objectives, we adopted the daily observation as a tool for data collection. The discussion and analysis of the results led us to identify four types of use that can be taken as evidence to characterize the forms of Internet use by young people in lanhouse: 1) use of diverse forms, 2) communication limited to the social group, 3) Virtual Communications in a complementary (not substitutive) to the presential communication process, 4) Setting up a player marked by the electronic media.

La commande des peintures bouddhiques dans les monastères de la province de Chiang Mai / Order of the Buddhist paintings in the monastery of the province of Chiang Mai

Tayac, Sébastien 14 December 2010 (has links)
This study, designed as an inventory of murals in the monasteries of six districts of the province of Chiang Mai made it possible on the one hand to study the various actors involved in an art order [sponsors, donors, artists] and on the other hand to classify these paintings into four groups according to their chronological and stylistic description. The multiple factors likely to influence the presence or the absence of paintings in the temples were also examined. A comparison of the iconography between the four groups found in these temples was also undertaken in order to refine their characteristics. In parallel, special attention was paid to the artists working in the temples in order to learn more about these unsung and ignored individuals. Training, social environments, place of the woman artist, inspirations and influences are topics discussed in this study.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese Claudia Guimaraes Goncalves Freitas Stress em Jogadores de Lan House Maio2006.pdf: 451590 bytes, checksum: 2a98ee7f5caa65dd596c18b993c02560 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-05-24 / This dissertation intends to analyze the stress in players from the prolonged use of the network games in LAN HOUSES. It dedicated to trace a revision of the literature about this subject, noticing the bibliographical shortage in relation of the studied object, as well as the references that give support to the concept of Pathological Game. This concept, in general related with the bet among pathological players to define the loss, was enlarged here. The psychosomatic loss transposes the limits that relate it directly with the act of the bet, to detain more specifically in the obstinate and immoderate use of the pleasure object--use that can take Lan House player to suffer himself, in certain measure, the effects of one pathology, such as loss of the time of notion, of the social responsibilities, of their own physiological till financial limits. The objective proposed was to evaluate if the excessive use of the games in Lan Houses can take the player to such losses. For such evaluation, this research adopted the quantitative method by interviewing the visitors of a Lan House, as well as the application of stress tests ESST/VAS and CASIFS/VAS respectively, besides the characterization of the physical space where the network games happen. The evaluation of the results of this study ransomed that the game is before all, a method of socialization by excellence, constituted of the human development and can contain in its unfolded aspects that can promote pathologies resulted from its interaction with the human and the environment it is inserted in / Esta dissertação buscou analisar o stress em jogadores a partir do uso prolongado dos jogos em rede nas Lan Houses.

To perform such an observation at an Internet café in the capital of Santa Catarina to know a little everyday this trade. We also apply a questionnaire to young students about the use of digital technologies and conducted semi-structured interviews with young people to deepen some questions regarding the use of Internet cafes and the Internet. Emphasize that sociality is present in these environments through the will to be together sharing common interests in interpersonal communicative actions, creating an identification between the users of cyberspace. Emphasize that public schools can play a critical role with respect to digital education based on youthful experiences related to the use of cyberspace. Finally, we suggest that the computer room of the school is also a place to use self-directed and 'free' digital technologies, fostering interaction between the experiences of Internet cafes and school.
