Identity Work to Teach Mathematics for Social JusticeDixon, Navy B. 12 December 2022 (has links)
In this thesis, mathematics educators are conceptualized as individuals with multiple, simultaneous figured worlds that inform their decisions while planning. The study explores how two mathematics educators negotiated and orchestrated their figured worlds to plan two mathematics lessons for social justice. The results highlight how numerous the figured worlds each participant surfaced through background interviews. Some of the figured worlds were elicited by the interview questions (i.e., Race, Family, Social Justice Teaching) but other figured worlds organically surfaced through the interviews (i.e., Sexuality, Community, Activism, Critical Information Consumption). A discursive analysis of a selection of these figured worlds revealed conceptualizations that were unique and similar between the two participants' figured worlds. Only some of these figured worlds were orchestrated in the planning of two social justice lessons. First, the figured world of Mathematics Teaching was demonstrated to be in apparent tension with the figured world of Social Justice teaching but were orchestrated by the participants to be valued together through adaptation of the lesson to include both mathematical and social justice goals. Second, the figured worlds of Quantitative Reasoning and Social Justice Teaching were negotiated, with one participant valuing student reasoning with quantities over students reasoning with the injustice evident in the tasks. Third, personal figured worlds (Race, Gender, Church, etc.) limited the participants from fully anticipating the possible reactions of students during the lesson. The results of this study can inform teacher educator practice of the complexity of teacher identity work, particularly to engage in teaching math for social justice.

Příprava hodin zeměpisu: možnosti učitelského webu / Preparation of Geography Lessons: Potential Use of Teacher-Oriented WebsiteWeiss, Tomáš January 2016 (has links)
Lesson preparation is an important part of teachers' profession, yet there has been little research focused on this topic recently. This work studied the preparation of geography lessons in Czechia with an emphasis on the use of internet sources. Based on the findings, criteria for an ideal geographic website for teachers were suggested. The data were collected in two ways: (1) on-line survey of ran- domly selected secondary school teachers (n=72), and (2) semi-structured interviews (n=6). The work indicated that lesson preparation greatly varies from teacher to teacher. In general, teachers do not change their lesson plans significantly, and thus the beginning of teachers' career is crucial for future teaching. Participating teachers spend on average about a quarter of their working time on lesson preparation and there is no apparent correlation between the time spend on lesson preparation and the teachers' age or the length of teachers' career. Furthermore, it was found that all participating teachers use internet resources during lesson preparation, particularly for search of updated infor- mation. The most visited websites are those offering maps and encyclopaedias (predominantly Wik- ipedia). The ideal geographical website should primarily offer ideas for teaching activities, as fully- prepared lessons...

Previous issue date: 2016-09-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The formulation of objectives is an essential task of the teacher, as it directs their work with students in a classroom. With a view to contributing to research on new teaching methodologies for teacher training, in this study, an educational programme for formulating educational objectives was prepared and evaluated, using the contributions of Behaviour Analysis. The participants were 15 students from the 1st year of the pedagogy degree from a college in the city of São Paulo. Each participant had access to the education programme through a link to a website during a 20 day period, the estimated time to complete the proposed activities of the teaching programme. For the programming of exercises, different text excerpts from different authors were used, relating to the concepts of education, the role of the teacher, planning and the formulation of educational goals. In the analysis of the results, a comparison of the pre-test data and post-test data was made, and even with performance data during the course of teaching programme. The results showed that there was an improvement in performance in relation to the planning and the formulation of objectives; however, they did not indicate the expected level of performance. It was found that the texts related to education and the role of the teacher did not provide new information to participants. On the other hand, the need for a greater number of exercises was verified. Finally, drafting suggestions to be carried out are presented, which will be evaluated in further studies / A formulação de objetivos é tarefa essencial do professor, pois dirige sua atuação junto aos alunos, em uma sala de aula.

Kursplanen i samhällskunskap A i praktiken : En kvalitativ studie av fem samhällskunskapslärares implementering av kursplanen i sin undervisningBodnar, Damir January 2009 (has links)

This thesis investigates how teachers in political science course A, all from municipal upper secondary schools work with planning their lessons. Due to nationwide regulations and goals set by the The Swedish National Agency for Education, the teachers have to plan their lessons basing on these regulations. However it is not defined how to concretely implement these regulations when planning for the lessons, which may lead to the fact that the teachers’ own interpretations of the regulations cannot be fully avoided in the process of planning for the lessons. The investigation consists of five interviews made with teachers in political science, all from municipal upper secondary schools. The teachers who have taken part in this report come from two different municipal upper secondary schools. The result in this report partly shows that although the basic reference topics set by The Swedish National Agency for Education is the same for each teacher in political science, the planning of the lessons structure can be very different. For example, when the five teachers plan how to make the pupils understand the concept of "democracy", they all planned their lessons having the regulations and goals in mind, but they all have a unique approach in how to prepare for their lessons and explain the concept of "democracy" for their pupils.

Integrating management with instruction : how district aligned curricula has altered teacher thinkingBay-Borelli, Debra E. 01 June 2011 (has links)
In light of the continual debate among researchers regarding new teachers’ concerns about classroom management and the need to insure that instruction results in positive student learning the focus of this qualitative case study has been to examine how five second and third year teachers planned for and thought about the management of student engagement during instruction. The main purpose of this study was to examine the professional thinking of five second and third year teachers while planning for a lesson in comparison to their actions during the lesson and later how they reflected on that plan. In addition, the teachers’ beliefs about how they learned to integrate management with instruction during planning were examined. The results of this study indicate these five teachers did intentionally think about and plan for the integration of management with instruction during their lessons. District aligned curricula were used in each of these teachers’ districts which caused them to alter the traditional planning model so they could plan for the integration of management with instruction in their lessons. In addition these teachers believed they learned to address management with instruction as a result of their first year(s) of teaching. / text
