Living feminism and leaving Catholicism in Victoria, BC since the 1960s

Greenup, Erica 22 September 2021 (has links)
Since the 1960s, religious adherence in Canada has declined with ‘no religion’ slowly taking its place. Although British Columbia has been less religious than the rest of Canada since its early settler days, the currents of postwar secularization can still be assessed. In this thesis, I look at secularization on a denominational, regional, and gender specific scale. Through the oral testimonies of eleven women who were raised Catholic in Victoria, and who left Catholicism in the ‘long sixties,’ I discuss the way the Catholic Sisters of St Ann modeled autonomy for these women in how they were educated within the Catholic church and I investigate how cultural and societal discourse regarding women’s liberation, autonomy and individualism impacted their departure. In leaving the Catholic church, these women joined the ranks of the rising ‘religious nones’ in this region, however their departure from organized religion did not always mean a rejection of belief in a higher power or spirituality, with the majority retaining some form of spirituality throughout their lives. Despite this, their departure from institutional religion and lack of religious socialization for their children influenced the subsequent irreligiosity of their children and grandchildren. I argue that these women engaged with the calls for women’s autonomy in the long sixties, and in their actions influenced intergenerational secularization. / Graduate / 2022-09-10

Söderström, Helene January 2022 (has links)
For many centuries, humans have used portraits as a tool to understand our surroundings, a way to anchor what has happened. The portrait acts as a mirror of the changes in society, and the message of the portrait changes according to the conditions of society. But the basic purpose of the portrait remains the same, to tell something about the person portrayed and a way of documenting it for posterity. The purpose of this study is to examine of the symbolic use in four Swedish queen portraits between 1654 and 2020. It examines how Queen Hedvig Eleonora, Queen Lovisa Ulrika, Queen Victoria and Queen Silvia are represented in official portraits to enhance their credibility by using visual symbols in relation to their roles as Swedish queens. Through biographical research and semiotic image analysis, the four portraits of the study are examined in relation to their society. The material is then studied with the support of a theoretical perspective focusing on the social context and visual culture. The study shows that a certain symbolism is timeless, the symbolism that is based on human genetic understandings of social relations. Other symbolism, however, is more time-specific, that which is based on contemporary cultural norms. However, it is not possible to see any real progress in the function of the four portraits. They can rather be seen as snapshots representing the time of their production. What has changed, however, is the medium and semiotics. The way the portraits are produced according to the chosen audience and which visual symbols are used for which message. However, this is not a linear development either, but a constant process of change that today is going faster and faster thanks to today’s society. The study also shows that the selected four portraits reflect their own society and have adapted to their respective target audience, as the portrait loses its point if the viewer does not understand the message. It does not matter how much the queens try to influence their surroundings with their portraits if the viewer does not understand the intention. A portrait does not live its own life, but lives thanks to the viewer.

Siban Espinoza, Geraldine Estefania, Siban Espinoza, Cris Estefania January 2018 (has links)

'Great British Fashion Is...' : An Institutional Analysis of Vogue and the V&A

Morrison Barrs, Eanna January 2019 (has links)
Both the fashion magazine and the fashion exhibition are powerful and authoritative sites for the representation, interpretation, and construction of fashion. Despite various intersections between the two, their relationship has remained relatively unstudied. This thesis aims to reveal and problematize the relationship between leading institutions in the United Kingdom: British Vogue and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). An analysis of British Vogue’s content and the V&A’s fashion exhibitions of Vivienne Westwood: 34 Years in Fashion (2004) and Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2015) is employed in order to unpack how these institutions are involved in defining and institutionalizing what fashion is in a national context. This institutional analysis considers the wider implications of the conception of British fashion produced by these institutions in regard to class, race, and gender, as Great British fashion is dependent on a system of representations that reveals hierarchies and exclusions.

Die Weimarer Jahre und Weimars Ende in den frühen Romanen von Victoria Wolff

Wenzel, Telse 18 October 2021 (has links)
Studying women*, economic crisis, the world of employees, the topos of Weimar's „New Woman“: These are some of the themes of Victoria Wolff's first two novels – „Mädchen wohin?” („Girl, Where are You Heading to?“) (1932) and „Eine Frau hat Mut” („A Woman Of Courage“) (1933). „Gast in der Heimat” („A Guest in the Homeland“) (1935) and „Die Welt ist blau” („The World is Blue”) (1933) respond to the rise of fascism, as well as the establishment of the Nazi regime: „Gast in der Heimat” („A Guest in the Homeland“) describes this time from the perspective of a German-Jewish family from the upper middle class, while the novel „Die Welt ist blau” („The World is Blue”) formulates, on one of its levels, alternative drafts to the fascist ideal of women* and society as a replica to the moral decline in germany. I would like to ask the following questions: What interpretations, thoughts and positions do the novels formulate in their view of the present? And what literary means do they use to do it in each case?

Yataco Delgado, Adela Marlene 17 February 2022 (has links)
