En estetisk studie vid Dödens hav

Harms, Angelica January 2016 (has links)
The subject of my essay concerns the images of refugees that have been taken on Lesvos during the last year. The aim of this essay is to examine the relationship between the photographer, the camera and the island as a scene för photographers, through the images that were taken there. The main scene is the beaches of Lesvos where tragedies and (sometimes) even comedies take place. I am working in a field where photography, aesthetics and social anthropology intersect. As regards to method, I have applied researcher Ruben Anderssson's ”extended field site” to my own field studies concerning Lesvos. The refugee situation that recently found its centre on the Greek islands is built up of networks that stretch far and wide across the globe. Events in one part of the world affect what is happening on Lesvos and vice versa. The media and NGOs are also part of larger networks. Therefore the field site needs to be extended beyond the geographical borders of Lesvos. I did field studies on Lesvos two times during the last year. I interviewed photographers and volunteers and took photographs of my own. Intuition is an integral part of my work and I have also applied it to my field studies. One of my starting points has been Judith Butler’s thoughts on what makes a life grievable. Butler's main hypothesis is that we view certain lives as having less value than others and thereby we will be less likely to grieve the passing of such lives. I examine the images of refugees to see if photography can help us better regard their lives as grievable. Refugees are people whose exposed bodies live precarious lives. Photographers can capture this in images but it is the spectator who has the final say in how images affect him or her. I end the essay by examining the spectator and what happens when we are confronted with disturbing images. Images of refugees in need exhort us to react whether we want to or not. We can turn away, but once images have entered out consciousness, there is no turning back.

Ηλία, Χρίστος 04 May 2011 (has links)
ASTER satellite pictures constitute the most recent product of spatial technology. With high spectral judgmatic ability, it is characterized by many scientists as a hyperspectral recording system in infra red. Thus, new possibilities for qualitatively or quantitatively of interpretation of ground cover is provided. Our aim is the environmental mapping of Lesvos perfecture from ASTER satellite pictures so as to chart the natural resources and the Ground cover. In this way we may be able to evaluate the possibilities and the applications that those data have. After the corrections (transformation in prices of energy etc.) the classification of satellite pictures allowed us to distinguish between the categories below: cultures, underbrush vegetation, forests, urban ground, aquatic surfaces, clouds and completely naked from vegetation ground and we created one thematic map. If we are to use more than 3 channels, then the mapping of more categories will become possible, given that the identification of each category might be realised only with countryside field work.

Lesvos Island : A Critical Discourse Analysis on the Local Daily Press

Gakidou, Georgia January 2022 (has links)
Since 2015, Greece has been in an unprecedented position. The Syrian civil war triggered the movement of more than 850,000 arrivals into Greece during 2015 (UNHCR, 2015). Being geographically situated as the closest European country to the east of Syria, Greece had to deal with a large increase in the number of migrating peoples to the country and by proxy, the European Union. This research seeks to understand how power relations between the island’s local population and its asylum seeker population are represented through an analysis of the discourse produced by the local daily press. In particular, the research reviews the discourse surrounding the island’s main square occupation by asylum seekers in April 2018. The theory of the established and outsiders is the framework used for the analysis, while Critical Discourse Analysis and General Inductive Approach constitutes the methodological ground of the thesis. The analysis showcases that Lesvos’ local daily press reproduces a discourse in line with the established and outsiders theory, attributing the local population as being established and the asylum seekers as being outsiders.

ENERGY SCENARIOS FOR THE ISLAND OF LESVOS GREECE: A MULTI-CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS APPROACH

Tsompanellis, Rafail January 2023 (has links)
This study performs an overview of the current electricity production for the Island of Lesvos, Greece. With the current trends and transitions towards Renewable Energy Sources, there has been an increase in interest in this topic in the region. This study creates four different scenarios for the generation of electricity with each scenario having an increased amount of RES. The aim of this study is to determine which scenario would be most viable to best implement on the interests of different stakeholders. With the current potential in wind farms due to the wind resource availability, there are large amounts of electricity generated from wind farms in the scenarios. The first scenario is the current scenario of the island. The second scenario has half the total capacity from fossil fuel powerplants with more RES. The third scenario has only RES supplying the island, with the fourth scenario being primarily wind energy with an interconnection with neighboring islands and the mainland. The fourth scenario is the most expensive and hardest scenario to implement. The study applies an MCDA method with the PROMETHEE II tool to rank the different scenarios based on the interests of the stakeholders. This resulted in the fourth scenario being the highest rank for three out of the four stakeholders.

Βαμβουκάκης, Κωνσταντίνος 03 August 2009 (has links)
In this phd dissertation it is investigated if remote sensing techniques can be used successfully as an aid in the ore deposits research and specifically for the localization by air "target" areas of epithermal mineralization of precious metals through the recognition of volcanic and tectonic structures and detection of hydrothermal alteration zones. The research area is the miocene volcanic-geothermal field of the island of Lesvos. The research includes also identification of ore and alteration minerals microthermometric measurements, measurement of the Au-Ag parts, of pathfinder and other trace elements in the target areas. The geochemical data are subsequently placed in a GIS environment for future research and/or mineral exploration purposes.

Hassan, Maria, Hasan Ibrahim, Rosnani January 2016 (has links)
Today’s technology allows people to interact at a great distance that could not be imagined before. Through the technology, the media such as news channels and social media which allows people to interact as well as read and gather information from all over the world. For example, a person can gather information from the comfort of his own home, without having to experience it himself. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the media coverage affects and alters tourist’s attitudes and views of a tourist destination. The study has limited itself to the Greek Island of Lesvos and how its tourism has been affected by the media reports of the refugee movements. The authors of the study have applied a quantitative research method in the form of structured interviews. Secondary data have also been collected such as; news from social media, scientific articles, statistics, and facts from governmental organizations, in order to have a deeper understanding of the subject that is studied. The results of the structured interview showed that the majority of respondents gained their knowledge of the island Lesvos through media outlets.  Whilst the majority of those who participated expressed that they could not imagine traveling to the island of Lesvos in Greece for pleasure and relaxation. The study survey shows that the media coverage of the refugee tide and the island of Lesvos had a great influence among the respondents. Based on the information from the media outlet, the island was described as a refugee camp and the respondents traveling for relaxation and fun chose to avoid Lesvos as a tourist destination I conclusion; the study indicates that the majority of the Swedish tourists have a negative attitude and view towards Lesvos due to the coverage and information spread by the media. Furthermore, it is important to note that the attitudes and views of the tourists differ from each individual. This is because every individual receives and perceives the information differently, even though it may come from the same source.
