Doing liberation theology in the context of the Post-Apartheid South AfricaMakhetha, Lesekele Victor 11 1900 (has links)
The author strongly holds- in the thesis- that the Theology of liberation can inspi re the
poor of South Africa to uproot the post-1994 socio-economic and political evil structures
which continue unabated to impoverish them.
The introductory chapter studies the reasons which motivated the author to write the
thesis. It further discusses the method, the format and the limitations of the thesis.
Chapter one focuses on the author's understanding of the Theology of liberation, and its
historical background.
Chapter two discusses the relationship between the Theology of Liberation and black
theology, while chapter three contemplates on the possibility of the creation of what the
author calls, An African Theology of Liberation.
Chapter four studies the relationship between the Theology of liberation and the Social
Teachings of the Catholic Church as taught by the pope and his council. The study of this
relationship is extremely difficult because of the on-going, and seemingly insurmountable
ideological differences between the two parties. The author suggests, as a solutio n, that
each party seriously considers and recognizes the contextual limitations of its theology.
Chapter five focuses on the implementation of the Theology of Liberat ion into the South
African situation. The author highly recommends the inclusion of the veneration of the
ancestors of Africa, as a perfect instrument by means of which the Theology of Liberation
can succeed in achieving one of its major aims, which is to convert the poor to be leaders of
their own liberation.
The concluding chapter suggests concrete ways through which the Theology of Liberation
can be kept alive and relevant within the South African situation. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Theological Ethics)

Gendering liberation : "deprivatising" women's subjectivity in the prayer-poetry of Dorothee SoelleNeumann, Katja L. E. January 2014 (has links)
This study investigates the artistic expressions of women’s subjectivity in the prayer-poetry of Dorothee Sölle (1929-2003). My aim is to develop a critical introduction of Sölle’s poetry, in light of her theology and in conversation with literary theory, contextualising the reception of her work and the role of reception in subjectivity as these converge in her prayerful hermeneutic. In what I come to call “liturgical reception”, I provide a perspective on Sölle’s work on the basis of translations for an English speaking context. I draw on contemporary thought, ranging from feminism and liberation theology to hermeneutics, literary theory and philosophy, to shape the contour and scope of Sölle’s work. Addressing feminist debates that consider the role of gendered subjectivity in relation to pervasive hetero-normative structures, I facilitate Mary Gerhart’s notion of the “genric” and Luce Irigaray’s work on the “sexuate” to clarify the issues arising in Sölle’s poetry in the context of language and literature, as well as classic formulations of God and the Church. Thinking through gendered subjectivity allows liberation to emerge as a poetic process that opens up personal prayer for the wider community. In light of Sölle’s early comments on “Deprivatised Prayer” [1971], I argue for a theopoetic conception of prayer which takes the Death of God not as an end point, but as a starting point for a consciously critical negotiation of gendered faith identity in community. The conditions of the Death of God, to Sölle a sign for the loss of immediacy in the sense of naïveté (Ricoeur) – and therefore a loss of unproblematic intimacy – require prayer to take into account its gendered situation, since prayer is never not embodied. Sölle’s portrayals of woman-lover, mother and artist both rely upon and differentiate the relationship between emancipation and solidarity that I see addressed by liberation hermeneutics as the work of co-creation. Thus emerges a theopoetic vision that does not dissolve gender difference in favour of a “general” salvation, but offers a critique of the process of liberation itself tied into our gendered engagements with a theological reception of women at prayer.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-15 / The biblical formation in the Diocese of Goiás, in the second half of the twentieth
century, has been noticed for its evangelical commitment to the impoverished ones.
The Rural Education is a recent reality as public policy. As a practice of social
movements, it is a strong presence in the decade of 1960. This presence is seen in
various social movements and practices of some pastoral church activities. The
socio-political practices were part of the church of the Basic Ecclesial Communities
(CEBs) which has adopted the liberation theology. The aim of this research is to draw
a parallel between the biblical formation in the Diocese of Goiás and the rural
education. The reporting period precedes its existence: 1967-1998. The analysis
proposes to check the characteristic presence, in the work of the Diocese, which is
remarkable in future rural education. The hypothesis is that the biblical formation in
the Diocese of Goiás is the predecessor of rural education. This hypothesis is
proven, in this research, by the similarity in the methodology, the theoretical
approach and the aims to achieve and, even more, in the shown results. The method
used is the qualitative analysis, using description and analysis of research sources
produced by the pastoral work of the Diocese of Goiás. There is also a rich source of
academic research already conducted on the pastoral work of the Diocese of Goiás.
The research starts from fundamental concepts such as Catholic Action, Rural
Education, Liberation Theology, Basic Ecclesial Communities (CEBs), and popular
reading of the Bible. The thesis is proved by the effective connection of the work of
Diocese of Goiás with the life of the peasant. The appreciation of their knowledge,
their culture, their concrete life. This means that the same methodological theoretical
basis was used in the Diocese of Goiás and for the future rural education. The
pedagogy of the oppressed by Paulo Freire is used both by the Diocese and the
Rural Education as a teaching manual for its action. Agrarian reform is a key element
in the drawn aims for the education field. This same aim is expressed in diocesan
assemblies and social pastoral plans, especially for pastoral land. Finally, the
concrete result is presented by the large number of settlements in the area of
Diocese of Goiás. This reality allowed the permanence of the farmer in the field and
the viability return for those who had been driven out by large landowners and
agribusiness.
A Educação do
As práticas
verificar características semelhantes. O período analisado antecede a existência da
educação do campo: 1967-1998.
do camponês.
Isto possibilitou a permanência do

Previous issue date: 2012-09-11 / Paulo Freire, inspiring and theorist of popular education movement has formulated a
proposal for education from the oppressed and not the oppressor, he said education
should firstly transform traditional systems of education and build a proposal to
rewrite the pedagogical practice, rethinking political meaning of education. Created
Education of liberation for the oppressed classes considered in the attempt to
educate them politically.
Liberation theology is a theological reflection that proposes the political commitment
of faith with the historical reality from the perspective of the struggle for liberation of
the oppressed classes. Seeing poverty as a structural sin offering the political
involvement of Christians in building a more just and caring society. One of the main
characteristics of the liberation theology is to see the poor, not as objects of charity,
but subject to their own liberation, the main character of his own story.
So what you want to highlight are the main points between liberation theology and
Education of Paulo Freire since the concern of both is with the poor and oppressed.
Besides a common context, the historical origin and social liberation theology and
Education of Paulo Freire employ a convergent terminology. The work of Paulo
Freire is directed to the folk school, a libertarian education, dedicated to the poor and
liberation theology operates through the church and Christians of poor communities
to formulate a theology libertarian especially from Christians themselves.
Paulo Freire has much in common with Liberation Theology and Liberation Theology
has much in common with the Education of Paulo Freire. This approach leads to
consider a mutual reciprocal influence, although both have their own history of
emergence and development. The motivation is problematical point the contribution
of these two major simultaneous events from the national historical context of the
A motivação problematizadora é apontar a
contribuição desses dois grandes acontecimentos simultâneos a partir do contexto
histórico nacional da década 1960.

Previous issue date: 2011-02-22 / The aim of this work is to show the life and the achievements of Jesus from Nazareth within the historical context of the society of his time, as a real person who assumes the human condition to insert the principles of the coming kingdom in the society, forging with his words and actions a new kind of existence based on brotherhood, solidarity, justice and, love.
According to the synoptic tradition, Jesus has come to establish the kingdom of God not as a landlord of men over men, but as a landlord of service, a good news for the poor people who are the recipients of this kingdom.
The idea of the kingdom of God, which is present in the beliefs of the people of Israel since its origins, becomes the center of Jesus activities and teachings, as described in the Gospels. Its approach permeates distinct periods of the History, nevertheless the rescue of its centrality will occur only after the Vatican Council II within the emergence of the liberation theology. In this period, the contributions of Latin American theologians stood out, mainly those of Jon Sobrino. The Liberation Theology aims the society´s commitment with a social transformation of the reality, based on the belief that it is possible to have a world where there is a place for everyone and the human dignity is preserved. The struggle for a fair world (without oppression and servitude) is a sign of the coming of the kingdom.
In this sense, Jesus, the ultimate mediator of the Kingdom of God, brings within his message the offer of salvation to all humanity in all its dimensions.

Religião e política: construção da memória de Dom Adriano Hypólito / Religion and politics: the construction of memory of Don Adriano HypólitoAlexander de Souza Gomes 31 August 2012 (has links)
In this thesis I discuss the interdependence between religion and politics in the context of the pastoral action of Nova Iguacu Diocese in the bishopric of Don Adriano Hypólito. In 1966 he was chosen diocesan bishop. In the discourse and social practices performed by Don Adriano Hypólito we observes the basis of this interdependence. The aim of this research is to analyze the speeches given by the bishop in documents as "A Folha" and "Boletim Diocesano" to measure its position in relation to faith and politics. Through interviews with priests and engaged laity we seek to rescue the memory of the Bishop of Nova Iguaçu, which in function to their posture and "preferential option for the poor, suffers persecution and was tortured under the Civil-Military Dictatorship in Brazil. To corroborate these elements, we try to make an anthropological analysis of the memorial, which was built a year after his death. Note that the objects that are on this memorial, materialize as a place-memory, is translated into a politico-religious language. Thus, we try to find that space as Don Adriano memorial is being transmitted and how his pastoral work is recovered. The research also seeks to recover the speeches of Bishop Adriano and contribution thereof to the formation of the laity that through awareness and training bases in the Church will engagein social movements, political parties and trade unions

Previous issue date: 2015-04-27 / The work titled as "The educational dimension of the thought and the action D. Adriano Hyp?lito in the social struggles of the Baixada Fluminense during the military dictatorship (1964-1985)", investigated since the formation of the thought of the Catholic Church in Brazil, it's share the colonial, imperial and republican education to date that corresponds to the decision-making by senior ecclesiastical hierarchy, depending on the situation which was driven to coexist in opting for the poorest in society. During the first half of the twentieth century Church, with its conservative nature, seeks the most influential means to ally and so take him a role in active participation of society, whether in the case of formal education means such as schools and seminars, even in the informal means such as the press, radio and television media. The political education now has an importance for the Church in as observing situation in Latin America, it is noticed that the less affluent classes of society suffered from injustice and social inequality. It was in this way that there were some sectors of the Catholic Church, strengthened by the Vatican Council and the Medellin and Puebla conferences, sought more active forms of political activity in the mobilization and politicization of the masses, uniting faith to fight for social justice. In this context that the figure of the Bishop Adriano Mandarino Hyp?lito in the Baixada Fluminense, when in 1966, already observing the political structure set up after the 1964 coup, took over the Nova Igua?u Diocese and joined the movement called Liberation Theology and spent to take a leadership attitude toward the union, social movements, and lay and religious who sought social equality and improvements in the most important sectors of society such as education, health, sanitation, land reform and policy, etc. The participation of Nova Igua?u bishop made the conservative sectors of the Church reacted against his bishopric, as well as the current military government and the economic elite, seeking to end the wave of political awareness of the people, exploited by organizations such as the Christian Communities Base and Neighborhood Friends Movement, these who had the guidance and funding for the Church proposed by Don Adriano de bishopric in line with the situation of struggle and resistance against the military regime and social inequalities and injustices caused by the current system.

The Audacity of Faith: A Study of Barack Obama's Religious Views and How they could Shape his United States PresidencyRoss, Zachary 23 April 2010 (has links)
During the 2008 Presidential election, questions concerning Barack Obama’s religious views arose. Specifically, the controversy surrounding Obama’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, caused some people to wonder how Wright’s theology may have influenced Obama. This project investigates Obama’s religious views and examines several forces, including Wright, which influenced his theological perspective. Wright bases his theological perspective on the works of James Cone, a significant figure in Black Liberation Theology and a mentor to Wright. This thesis compares and contrasts Obama’s religious perspective with that of James Cone.

: - How deacons handle opportunities, boundaries and internal conflicts.Persson, Matilda January 2011 (has links)
In a press release from the Swedish church it says that the pressure from people who are in need is increasing on the deacons in Sweden and that it’s getting higher each year. This study contains the search of knowledge about the deacons of the Swedish church, if they actually feel an increasing pressure and in what way, how they are handling the possible pressure from people in need, if that pressure is too high and if the deacons feel that they can assist the people seeking their help. The study also aim to provide more knowledge about the deacons experiences of the opportunities and boundaries (or obstacles) they meet in their line of work and how they handle the boundaries when/if they can’t provide the help that the people need. This is a qualitative study, using interviews as a tool to get the appropriate information to answer the questions at hand. Six deacons in different parishes in Blekinge and Skåne participated and the interviews took place at the parishes. The empirical material has been analyzed thematically. The theoretical viewpoints has been liberation theology, solution focused approach and empowerment. The analysis shows that the deacons experience an increasing pressure from the people seeking help especially from some groups in the community, especially from people feeling lonely. It shows that the deacons especially feel like the people mostly turn to them because they have a need to talk to someone, for example about their difficulties in life. It also shows that the deacons want to be sufficient, enough, and when they leave their work at the end of the day they want to feel that they’ve done everything they can to help the people in need. It also shows that they want to see the boundaries more as challenges to find new solutions. The analysis also shows that the deacons seem to use empowerment and that they have a solution focused approach in their work with the people in need. They also seem to have a viewpoint that looks like liberation theology. When the deacons experience that they have internal conflicts the analysis shows that they use different ways to deal with these. For example retreat, their faith, supervision/tutoring and a balanced free time.
