All dressed up and nowhere to go: Linguistic, cultural and ideological aspects of job interviews with second language speakers of DanishKirilova, Marta Kunov 24 May 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is a sociolinguistic, data-driven study of authentic job interviews with second language speakers of Danish. The job interviews are part of a Danish governmental initiative aimed particularly at immigrants and newcomers to Denmark, who are assumed to experience linguistic and cultural difficulties at the Danish labour market. The particular designs of the job interviews as well as the explicitly stated evaluations of language and culture create an unusual frame. On the one hand we deal with "traditional" job interviews as institutional gatekeeping instruments; on the other hand we face a tailored selection process meant to address the needs of the vulnerable. These contradictory practices produce certain tensions: although the job interviews in focus are meant to accomplish the target group's special needs, they exemplify a practice in which the good intentions are all dressed up but have nowhere to go.

Previous issue date: 2015-10-14 / The motivation for this work is given from a teaching experience in the discipline Geography involving the use of different textual genres that were not initially produced for this specific area. In order to propose suggestions for pedagogical practice, we selected two texts of different genres - a song's lyric and a biblica narrative - analyzing them, focus sing on the relationship bet we en the textual content and geographical aspects, as per example, climate issues. Starting wi than explanation of some basic concepts of Text and textual genres: Kleiman (2011), Kock and Elias (2010), Marcuschi (2008) and Irandé (2009); Weal so have the important guidelines of the National Curriculum Parameters (NCPs) of Geography, as well as theorists of geographical science: Andrade and Sette, Lucci, Lacoste, Pontuschka, Visentini, Rabbit among others. In sequence, we present and analyze the selected texts, to finally get to the suggestions for the classroom. With this work, we can see that the geographical know ledge is necessary for understanding of these texts, and the study of such genres contributes to the consolidation of know ledge on Geography. This relationship bet ween the practice of reading and understanding of gender and learning of specific content in Geography should be explored by teachers, which will contribute to the training of students as readers.

This study reflects the debates between localisms and globalisms of the globalized society. We aim specifically at the universe of scientific production which develops itself beyond national spaces and institutions through the use of auxiliary languages for linguistic exchange. The approach disregards disciplinarization so that this research was performed in the intersection between linguistic sciences such as linguistics and sociolinguistics and sociology, considering that factors which attribute the status of lingua franca to certain languages are chiefly sociopolitical. To describe the issue of using auxiliary languages in science as well as its consequences such as the tight link between communicative deficit in scientific publication and scientific productivity and visibility we analyzed some sociological problems observed in the production of scientific texts by researchers at the State University of Campinas, when they are produced in foreign languages in general and in English language in particular, and we have produced, from a sociological view, a comprising description of scientific language practices and the issues related to them, using different indicators, for instance, researcher's curricula data, interviews, a numeric profile of electronic journal reading and text comparison. These elements have allowed us to establish some correlation between foreign language knowledge and international academic publication, to discuss the centrality of the English language in the scientific world, to clarify existing convergences between changes in language uses and those in the historical-social scenery that preceded them and to compare differences in the use of certain languages in Human and Natural Sciences. Taking into account the importance of the technicalscientific development for the world society such study justifies itself for the urge of knowing social uses of foreign languages in this field, as well as potential linguistic limitations which can not only jeopardize the local scientific production, as well as our condition as science producers / Doutorado / Sociologia / Doutor em Sociologia

Previous issue date: 2007-03-01 / This paper aims to discuss, through Luis Bernado Honwana works, that the Portuguese language, despite being an exogen language, that is, the conquerors language, has been important on the constitution of the Mozambique nationality and that this author, by means of this language, makes, on his tales, the registration of the conquerors oppression and of the inhuman ways on treating the colonized people, mainly the ones connected to FRELIMO Mozambique s Front for Freedom. To explain it we choose three tales: Nós matamos o Cão-Tinhoso (We killed Mangy Dog), A Velhota (The Old Lady) and As Mãos dos Negro (Niger s hands), which remounts to the period between 1964 and 1975, when FRELIMO was created. To accomplish the proposed objective, we have divided this work in three chapters. In the first one we commented on the historic aspects and the nationality issue. After that, we discussed about the theoretical fundamentals of the discourse analysis speech, ideology, polyphony, interdiscursivity and intertextuality, and the discourse on the Aristotelian perspective and the linguistic aspects lexical and semantic as pillars, to analyse the stories. It is necessary to mark that this paper intended to give some contribution for the analyses about Portuguese in Mozambique. The implantation of the Portuguese language in Mozambique is a very recent issue and the researches on this area are very scarce; on the other hand, it is a continuous research, as the language is dynamic. For all this, we just dare to make some reflections, so we can feed the desire of those who read this dissertation want to know more about this subject.

[en] CLARITY AND OBSCURITY IN LEGAL TEXTS - A CASE STUDY: A COMPARATIVE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE BRAZILIAN CIVIL CODE OF 2002 AND OF THAT OF 1916 / [pt] CLAREZA E OBSCURIDADE NO TEXTO LEGAL - UM ESTUDO DE CASO: ANÁLISE LINGÜÍSTICO-COMPARATIVA DO CÓDIGO CIVIL BRASILEIRO DE 2002 E DO DE 1916ERIKA MAYRINK VULLU 12 August 2005 (has links)
[pt] O trabalho enfoca a relação entre linguagem e Direito,
apontando o
distanciamento entre a linguagem legal e a linguagem do
homem médio. Tendo
Civil
brasileiro de 1916
e de 2002, relativamente ao Direito das Sucessões,
analisam-se questões
pertinentes à estruturação sintática, à utilização
vocabular e à presença de
ambigüidades estruturais. Busca-se, assim, identificar
os
principais fatores
responsáveis pelas dificuldades enfrentadas pelo homem
médio ao interpretar
textos legais. O estudo, valendo-se de uma pesquisa
realizada junto a
informantes, constata que houve um certo progresso
quanto
2002. A pesquisa volta-se,
também, para a identificação de marcas lingüísticas
evidenciadoras de
mudanças axiológicas ocorridas na sociedade brasileira
desde a promulgação do
Código de 1916, e refletidas no de 2002. A dissertação
meio propiciador
desse conhecimento. / [en] This work focuses on the relation between language and
Law, pointing out
the distance that prevails between legal language and the
language of the
common man. By comparing segments of the Brazilian Civil
Code of 1916 with
those of the Civil Code of 2002, in regard to Successions
Law, issues concerning
syntactic structure, use of vocabulary and the presence of
structural ambiguities
are analyzed. The identification of the main factors
responsible for the difficulties
faced by the common man in interpreting legal texts is
also pursued. By means of
an empirical research undertaken with informants, the
study establishes that
there has been a certain degree of progress, language-
wise, in what concerns
the Civil Code of 2002, as compared to that of 1916.
However, it points out that
the degree of progress that has been achieved is far less
considerable than that
which would be desirable, since, in virtually all cases,
the alternative linguistic
formulations proposed by the author were preferred over
their parallel
formulations found in the Civil Code of 2002. The research
also provides the
identification of linguistic traces which signal
axiological changes that have taken
place in Brazilian society since the promulgation of the
1916 Code, and which are
reflected in that of 2002.The thesis discusses the
relation between language and
power and calls attention to the perversity of the
coexistence of the necessary
juridical fiction that no one can be excused of abiding to
the law by claiming to
ignore it with the perpetuation of an obscure juridical
language and the
unrestrained proliferation of laws. It thus recommends the
adoption of a juridical
language that instead of deterring the common man from
finding out what his
rights and his responsibilities in face of society are,
transforms itself in a means
of favoring such knowledge.

Previous issue date: 2011-12-12 / We have been living in a world of packed products. The package and the labels support the companies to communicate with the customers in addition to give protection, storage and convenience in proportion to the products that move in the price list. The labels mainly add up a value which helps the companies differ their products and increase the value of the brands among the final customers. However, the information given in the label are not clear sometimes. It displays a verbal-visual defective language resulted from a poor visibility, legibleness and comprehensibleness of the verbal and visual marks. The aim of this research is to verify, according to the costumers‟ view, the level of the clarity in the informative texts, harmony and ergonomic conformity of the package labels in the chocolate powder of the Claralate brand, considering the linguistic aspects presented on the labels. The criteria to evaluate the chocolate package selected were based on the linguistic field: the organization and the structure of the text derided from the classification of the textual genre; the clarity and the comprehension of the language utilized on those labels. From the ergonomic view, the informative and ergonomic conformity, based on the following requirements: legibility, symbols, characters, reading fields and intermission of the written lines. Therefore, the research done july 2007 and added july 2011 had a structured questionnaire in the interview put to the 118 customers of the chocolate package that go shopping in one of the two supermarkets in Floriano, Piau? S?o Jorge and/or Super Quaresma. The main results of the investigation show that the linguistic aspects in the informative texts of the labels provide the customers‟ expectancy partially, while the consideration of the informative ergonomic analyzed can contribute to the improvement of the information and consequent visual progress of those, on the labels of chocolate package investigated. As recommendation towards the maker of the product, the outcome of the research indicates: harmonize the proportion of the letters and numbers; enlarge the letters size; make the visual information more comprehensive determined by the reading field; put the expiry date in a better visual place / Vivemos num mundo de produtos embalados.

An investigation into the content of the further education and training (FET) phase home language curriculum and assessment policy statement (CAPS): a linguistic perspectiveLumadi, Nnditsheni Irene 18 May 2019 (has links)
MA (Linguistics) / Department of Communication and Applied Linguistics / The purpose of this study is to investigate the content of the Further Education and Training
(FET) Phase Home Language (HL) Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). The
Tshivenḓa HL content was translated from English for teaching and learning purposes. The study
adopted both the qualitative and quantitative approaches in order to attain holistic results. Data
was collected through the use of questionnaires from educators and subject advisors. Document
analysis was also used (by analysing CAPS documents). The findings of this study will benefit
the South African society, especially the Tshivenḓa HL educators and learners. The educators
believed that the Tshivenḓa newspapers articles are not well-taught because they are not
available in Tshivenḓa and educators did not know how to prepare them. The study also revealed
that there are no prefixes but suffixes for formulating antonyms in the Tshivenḓa HL, however
both are found in the English HL. Furthermore, educators complained about the shortage of film
study resources in literature which the department of education delivers late. The findings of the
study suggest that Tshivenḓa newspapers should be reintroduced as they aid learning for
learners, and enable educators to plan their lessons. Prefixes in the Tshivenḓa HL should be
introduced so that learners are able to attach them in their words, similar to what do they do in
the English HL. In addition, ample resources for HL literature such as textbooks, Television sets
(TV), overhead projectors for film study, and other resources should be delivered timely. / NRF

Zahraniční studenti češtiny v České republice (Příspěvek k problematice migrace a studentů-migrantů v českém prostředí) / Foreign Students of Czech Language in the Czech republic (A contribution to the problematics of Migration and Students-Migrants in the Czech Context)Franc, Aleš January 2012 (has links)
in English The dissertation thesis deals with foreign students in the Czech republic, specifically immigrant students coming from all over the world - from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and then from China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The basic objective of this work is not a real attempt to display the everyday reality of certain groups of migrant-students of Czech language in the Czech Republic in such a way that it only focuses on the problems and barriers they encounter in their studies in the Czech language. It also deals with their adaptation and integration into mainstream Czech society. At the same time, however, we realize that this work is only a partial contribution to the knowledge of migrant-students' life in the Czech environment between 1998 and 2011. This work is based on relevant literature and the research is based on interviews with students and teaching observations. The choice of qualitative methods was intentional to serve our matter the best, since there has been a lack of research in this particular area in recent times. This focus on qualitative techniques is also dependent on the characteristics of the sample group, especially in the linguistic and sociocultural realm. The research was carried out at the Institute of Language and Training of the Charles University in Prague...

Translating linguistic and cultural aspects in Swahili healthcare texts: a descriptive translation studies approachOrang'i, Douglas Ondara 05 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 185-194) / Underpinned by the premise that any text can be studied as a translation provided it is identified
as such, this study theoretically uses Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) to investigate
English-Swahili healthcare texts. The aim of the study was to: identify, describe and analyse
linguistic and cultural aspects in the texts; identify, describe, and analyse translation strategies
used in the texts; and describe and analyse the use of illustrations in the texts. The study made
use of Kruger and Wallmach’s (1997) analytical framework. The Tertium Comparationis of
the study was descriptive terms, cohesive devices, translation strategies, division of texts,
illustrations, text titles, and taboo words. On the linguistic aspects, the study’s main findings
were: that the English texts use more descriptive terms than the Swahili texts; Swahili texts
have a higher frequency use of references because it contains a number of derivational and
inflectional morphemes; substitution is sparingly used whereas ellipsis is almost non-existent
in Swahili texts in spite of its presence in the source texts; additive and causal conjunctions
were the most prevalent in the texts; and inasmuch as there were no significant differences in
the use of lexical cohesion in the ST and TT, Swahili texts were found to be more cohesive due
to the slightly higher number of lexical items. Regarding the cultural aspects, it was found that
translators use euphemism in the translation of words considered taboo and this informed the
conclusion that there reigns the euphemism norm in Swahili texts. It equally emerged that
strategies used to overcome non-lexicalisation include: use of pure loan words, use of pure loan
words preceded by explanation, use of indigenised loan words, use of omission and translation
by a more general word. On the other hand, translators used strategies of substitution, use of
general words, paraphrasing and cultural substitution to translate words considered taboo. In
addition, the study found that illustrations are used in more less the same way both in the ST
and TT save for some slight modifications that are done in order to align them with the target
culture expectations. Furthermore, the study theoretically effectuated four norms: explicitation
norm, explicitness norm, euphemism norm, and illustration norm / Linguistics and Modern Languages / D. Litt.et Phil. (Linguistics)
