Att främja elevers läslust och läsmotivation : Hur lärare i årskurs 4-6 genomför litteraturundervisning med fokus på elevers läslust och läsmotivation / Encouraging pupils’ enjoyment of reading and their motivation to read : How teachers who work in grades 4-6 organize their teaching of literature to foster pupils’ reading enjoyment and motivation to read

Netzell, Cecilia January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how teachers who work in grades 4-6 organize their teaching of literature to encourage pupils’ enjoyment of reading and their motivation to read. More specifically, the study looks at what methods teachers use to teach reading; how teachers feel they can encourage pupils’ reading enjoyment and motivation to read; and teachers’ own attitude to reading and if it can have an impact on how they manage to interest pupils in reading. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four teachers in grades 4-6 at two schools in Sweden. All interviews were conducted with the same list of questions and sound recordings were made. The results show that all four teachers experience difficulties in motivating their pupils to read and in promoting reading enjoyment. They all relied to a great extent on reading aloud as a method. In their experience, pupils developed an interest in reading through reading aloud. Other factors affecting pupils’ reading enjoyment were: choice of book; reading difficulties; and their home environment. The teachers varied in their own attitudes to reading but they each thinks that they could rely on their own interest in reading to give an interest in reading to their pupils.

A genealogical study of South African literature teaching at South African universities : towards a reconstruction of the curriculum

Chetty, Rajendra Patrick 11 1900 (has links)
The colonial history of South Africa and its legacy of cultural and linguistic domination have resulted in a situation where the. literatures of the majority of South Africans were relegated to the margins of institutional, social and cultural life. Exclusion (of local writings) was the principal mode by which power was exercised within university English departments. It is within this context that this study posits lacunae and challenges for the reconstruction of the South African literature curriculum. Although various approaches have been used by English departments during this decade to include South African literature in the curriculum (pluralism, inter-disciplinary studies, alternate canon formation, canon rejection, eclecticism, elective programmes, etc.), the curriculum continues to repeat the established norms and values of colonial/apartheid society, it avoids confronting the ideological construction of traditional English literature and is a revamping or upgrading of the programmes offered during the colonial/apartheid era. The genealogical study uncovers the production, regulation, distribution, circulation and operation of statements, decentres discourse, and reveals how discourse is secondary to systems of power. Chapter Four explores both theoretical and methodological underpinnings for the reconstruction of the South African literature curriculum deriving from the critical educational approaches of Freire, Giroux and Apple, the discursive approach of Foucault and the post colonial reading strategies of Zavarzadeh and Morton. The teaching of South African literature would best be served by working within a critical paradigm, having as its objective the goals of critical educational studies. Chapter Four also includes a review of the curriculum in local practice through a curriculum impact study using empirical research based on the 1996 English literature syllabi of South African universities as well as the findings of the surveys conducted by Malan and Bosman in 1986 and Lindfors in 1992. Chapter Five posits recommendations for curriculum reconstruction with the main focus on the intervention of radical strategies that would lead to a new conflictual reading list. The objective is to put the canon under erasure by problematising the concept of literariness. Such an approach also reveals the power/ knowledge relations of culture, ideologies that dominate the discipline and the institutional arrangements of knowledge. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D.Ed. Využití audiovizuální techniky, muzejní pedagogiky a literatury ve výuce vlastivědy / Use of audiovisual Equipment, Museum Pedagogy and Literature in the Teaching of Geography

Rabová, Jaroslava January 2015 (has links)
His master's thesis I've divided into three parts, theoretical, practical and empirical. The theoretical part deals with the teaching of geography, educational technology and teaching aids, museum pedagogy, individual educational specificities of schools and museums and how should cooperation look like, what role in it plays the personality of the museum educator and what it is for a school and a museum benefit. And last but not least the literature, which is in my opinion an important element in the teaching of geography. In the practical part, I have described a realization of a project in which it is used didactic technology, a collaboration with the museum and work with literature. The empirical part is focused on research in basic schools in the field of educational technology. The key concepts on which the research is based, such as: modern didactic techniques, working with modern educational technology, the perception of educational technology as a means to the realization of the teaching.

Assessment of higher order thinking skills in a literature based curriculum : challenges and guidelines

Guth, Karen Debra 06 1900 (has links)
The study focused on pertinent challenges and key guidelines in introducing and assessing students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in a literature based English foreign language (EFL) curriculum. A curricular initiative in Israel, namely to integrate HOTS in the teaching and learning of literature in the high school EFL classes, prompted this study to measure its effectiveness on students’ abilities to understand and apply the HOTS in their reading and writing. This mixed-methods study dealt with the following research questions: Are HOTS innate skills or must they be purposefully taught in order for students to learn and to apply them? To what extent has 10th and 11th grade EFL Israeli students’ ability to apply HOTS to their bridging essays, after completing two years in the English literature programme, been improved? How accurately could students demonstrate an understanding of HOTS by naming them and by providing an example of how they could apply them in the areas of reading and writing? The overall key findings showed that; HOTS must be taught and practiced in order for students to learn and to apply them and that teaching students to use HOTS will improve their reading and writing capabilities in regard to higher order thinking as well as their understanding of specific HOTS. It was also found that students enjoy the challenge of infusing HOTS into a literature curriculum and expressing what they learn in their writing. They are consequently motivated to learn when they are challenged with a programme that infuses HOTS into an EFL literature curriculum. Implications of the findings are that the subject specific approach and infusion method for teaching HOTS are successful in the EFL classroom. The findings provide a novel contribution to the study of HOTS pedagogy within a literature based EFL curriculum programme. Recommendations for further studies are made, particularly on HOTS vis-à-vis weaker EFL students as well as on examining different writing formats, such as opinion essays, to determine if HOTS are transferring to other types of writing after students’ participation in this curricular initiative. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Inkluderande litteraturundervisning på gymnasiet : Svensklärares resonemang om inkludering och inkluderande litteraturundervisning / Inclusive literary studies in high school : Swedish teachers' reasoning about inclusion and inclusive literature teaching

Holm, Christer January 2020 (has links)
