This thesis has as its central point of discussion the formation of a Portuguese teacher as an educator of readers of literary, pictorial, photographic and filmic texts, considering the intersemiotic relationships among these languages. It is known that an expertise have been increasingly required from teachers in order that they can read as well as can teach the reading of literary texts, relating them to other texts that are part of the various socio-cultural contexts. That issue is discussed in this thesis, because there is a very wide range of textual productions that are resulting from intersemiotic translations or adaptations and we understand that many teachers are not prepared for a reading that considers these intersemiotic aspects involved in the texts. This thesis was built from a specific training course for Portuguese teachers of public high school of the state of Pernambuco. To conduct this study, the following objective was drawn: to investigate the contributions that a specific training course can bring to Portuguese teachers to establish intersemiotic relations between the texts in question in our thesis and what would be the possible impacts of such training in their conceptions of reading and teaching practices. To reach such a goal, we turned to authors like Larrosa (2003), Josso (2004) Cosson (2011), Nóvoa (1992), Tardif (2010), Zeichner (1993) and many others whose works helped us in our reflections. As for the methodology, this is qualitative, considering the interpretative nature of the data and the involvement of the researcher with the work. And as data analysis perspective, we turned to the narrative analysis, because, for data collection, the narratives of stories of life and experiences of teachers involved in the research were taken into account. The approaching to the teachers by listening to their stories and their experiences led us to realize some developments of the work of literary text reading in intersemiotic relation to non-verbal texts. We also realized that the training course for teachers, in which we discussed verbal and nonverbal texts, gave us the chance to perceive how much a continuing education means as a channel of communication between teacher and text. In the progress of the course, the teachers realized that literary, pictorial, photographic and filmic texts are not merely decoded; in the process of reading, the reader interrelates with the text, by having as reference his own relation to the world around, for socio-cultural experiences of each one are implicated in it. Another aspect to point out is that it is not enough to equip teachers for them to perform in their classes an intersemiotic reading of literary texts in relation to the pictorial, photographic and filmic text, as if working with these texts would deal only with teachers' theoretical framework on the subject; there is, along with it, the need for a discussion of the reading practices considering the textual interrelations in teachers training courses to the formation of readers. It is therefore of utmost relevance, within teachers training courses, a development of reflections that relies on the teacher's experience.

The literature - as well as many other art expressions - is understood as a right of the human being, as it is vital and transformative (CANDIDO, 2010), and because of that, it needs to become, effectively an object of practices mediated by school where, according to, many children and young people, it is a place of unique access to literary reading. The present research is about the possibility of ensuring that young students can experience aesthetic experiences, by investigating and proposing the interdisciplinary dialog between literature, especially the classic ones and the arts, in the form of comics. The access to many artistic languages, interacting with the visual culture must be a school concern (BARBOSA, 2010). Immersed in a broad universe of visual culture to which the contemporary people are exposed, the comics as a subject can be addressed in the school as a possibility of approximating the visual arts, in dialog with the literature. Based on assumptions that guide the pedagogical action in teaching visual arts and literature, the concept of literary literacy (PAULINO; COSSON, 2009), and by the notion of semiosis (SANTAELLA, 2012), this research presents a reading project involving the novel Dom Casmurro written by Machado de Assis, and two versions of the same literary work in a comic version, developed with students from high school. The project implementation, developed in the form of didactic sequence, indicates the confirmation of the hypothesis that the association between the subjects; literature and visual arts can draw young students attention to the literary readings, and it also leads students to artistic appreciation, adding to the effective aesthetic experience in the educational field and to the reading training. This mentioned production in comic of formatted, presented as an appendix in this paper, and represents the didactics sequence research product.

En studie i Sherlock : En komparativ studie utifrån tre svenska översättningar av A study in scarlet ur ett didaktiskt perspektiv / A study in Sherlock : A comparative study of three Swedish translations of A study in scarlet out of a didactical viewpoint

Josefsson, Hanna January 2018 (has links)

Låt romanen komma in – Transformativt lärande i gymnasieskolans litteraturundervisning / Let the novel in – Transformative learning and the teaching of literatureat upper secondary school

Bradling, Björn January 2020 (has links)
The function of reading fictional texts in Swedish secondary school education has been questioned in public debate (e.g. Melin, 2016-07-17), even though the reading of fictional texts has been shown to be important to young people’s academic achievement (Jerrim &amp; Moss, 2019). Swedish policy documents clearly state that upper secondary teaching of literature in the subject of Swedish is aimed at increasing the pupils’ self-awareness and their comprehension of experiences and perceptions of others (The Swedish National Agency of Education, 2011). However, results from a large-scale reading project show that Swedish teenagers find it difficult to reflect upon their own roles as readers of fictional texts (Nordberg, 2018). Therefore, this licentiate thesis targets upper secondary reading of fictional texts, and the possibility of using literary terminology pedagogically to visualize and develop pupils’ transformative learning processes. The overall research question posed is: - How can applied literary terminology be used in upper secondary literary studies todevelop pupils’ transformative learning processes? A pilot study was conducted based on three focus group-sessions with teachers and the librarian at an upper secondary school. The main study was based on reading journals written by pupils reading John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Låt den rätte komma in (2004) [Let the Right One In, 2008] as part of the Swedish 3 course. The methodological framework is inspired by participatory research. Consequently, this research-project uses an inclusive approach to the participants – 11 Swedish teachers, 1 librarian and 31 pupils – which means that they are considered as subjects rather than objects of knowledge. My own role in this project is tripartite: as a colleague, a teacher, and researcher. The pilot study was conducted in order to find out which possibilities and obstacles arose when the staff participants worked on teaching literature. The main study, within which the pupils are included as participants, focuses on advancing meta-perspectives of their own reading and made use of results from the pilot study and concepts derived from Felski’s (2008) ‘modes of textual engagement’. The pilot study revealed tensions which obstruct the teaching of literature, including the teacher-experienced importance of pupils ‘stepping into’ stories, as opposed to a great many pupils’ reluctance both towards the text and the act of reading. Moreover, the tension between engaged reading and the heavy emphasis placed on assessable outcomes of teaching and learning was addressed by the teachers. The main study revealed that reluctance is an inherent part of reading fictional texts. Further, that the pedagogical application of concepts used in literary studies can support the reading process, make it move forward, encourage the adoption of meta-perspectives on reading and on the pupils themselves as readers, as well as supporting a cohesive view of the finalized text. In summary, the findings suggest that applying literary concepts in literary studies supports pupils towards advancing their transformative learning and potentially points to a new way of making the goals section of the policy documents tangible for teaching and learning practices. According to this study, transformative learning-goals can be achieved if critical perspectives are preceded by individual engagement with the reading of the text. The suggested concept of transformative potential is beneficial to an analysis of the pedagogical function of a certain fictional text used in a certain learning situation geared towards transformative learning. This finding stands in contrast to trends of using reading as a means of writing practice or imaging historical epochs. / <p>Licentiate Thesis in Education with Specialisation in Didactics.</p>

An analysis of three teacher guides for works of fiction with a focus on grades 1-3, from a reading and literature teaching perspective

Perkovic, Carolina, Ström, Alexandra January 2021 (has links)

A reality found in fiction : A study of teachers' and students' views on sexual identity and literature teaching.

Matilda, Malm January 2021 (has links)
The question about sexual identity, gender and sex is becoming increasingly discussed, accepted and open among today´s young people, on social media and in society at large. Can schools be said to keep up with this development and to they embrace students interest in discussing these said questions in literature teaching? The qualitative study conducted using semi-structures interviews with both teachers and students aims to illustrate both teachers’ and students’ views on and attitudes regarding sexual identity and how a norm critical work with fiction as a tool could take shape. The research questions asked are: How do teachers and students describe the literature teaching and to what extent does it enable discussions linked to sexual identity? What attitudes do students make visible while talking about sexual identity issues? In what ways can teachers be said to work norm-critical within the literature teaching regarding questions about sexual identity? In order to analyse the results, theories of literature didactics as well of queer theory has been used. The analyse shows that questions about sexual identity have an indefinite role in teachers’ literature teaching. There is an openness regarding the subject, but the responsibility for its place in the classroom lies with the students. Attitudes shown by the students attaches norm-critics to younger generations. The normalization of sexual identity issues is linked to the fact that generations is changing. Older generations and their conservative opinions disappears and are replaced with younger more open-minded ones. Teachers norm-critical work is complex. They show an openness, awareness and willingness to work with a variety of sexual identities in natural ways. Despite this, heterosexuality is given an natural role in literature teaching and is not questioned, but remains unspoken and invisible.

(The Missing) Mirrors and Windowsin the English Classroom : Representation and Diversity in Novels Used in Upper Secondary School / (Saknade) speglar och fönster i engelskklassrummet : Representation och mångfald i romaner som används i gymnasiet

Lindskog, Åsa January 2021 (has links)
This essay aims to investigate representation and diversity in novels used in the English teaching inupper secondary school, and whether teachers take representation into account when choosing whatnovels to work with. A web survey was used to ask 71 teachers of English open questions regardingwhat novels they use in their teaching and why. The results demonstrate that the majority of the usednovels depict normative protagonists and settings, although there is some diversity and representationof different genders, races, ages, abilities and settings. It is also shown in the results that the majorityof the responding teachers do not think about representation when choosing what novels to workwith, while some respondents do indicate that they take aspects of representation into account. Theresults are discussed by drawing on ideas about representation, diversity and an intersectional genderpedagogy from Rudine Sims Bishop and Nina Lykke.

Hodzic, Mersad January 2024 (has links)
This master’s thesis investigates poetic text writing through a teaching project conducted on a secondary school class in Sweden. Inspired by ekphrastic poetry, the teaching project consisted of poetry and literature reading. The students visited a sculpture related to the literature, upon which they wrote poetic texts about the sculpture. The main purpose of the study is to describe how teaching in the Swedish subject can make use of Swedish language teaching by developing students’ poetic texts that touches on topics such as living conditions and identity. Drawing from thematic narrative analysis, most notably Bamberg’s positioning model, the analysis investigates the narratives constructed in the students’ poetic texts as well as identity aspects negotiated through the narratives. The students’ identities were further discovered through participant observation and semi-structured interviews to deepen the understanding of the meeting between art, identity and learning. The general perception drawn from the interviewees’ answers is that the Swedish subject rarely includes knowledge of nor writing of poetic texts. However, the study emphasises that poetry could have an integral part of the education in the Swedish subject in secondary education. The results show that the students’ poetic texts tend to relate to the sculpture and the physical environment, as well as the social context of the environment. Furthermore, the identities of the students were shown to have a high relevance in the writing process. The teaching project was based on principles of culturally sustaining pedagogy and aimed at contributing to the sociocultural support of the school. As the students’ language and cultural backgrounds proved to be significant in the writing process, it became evident that multilingualism was a natural part of the student’s everyday school life.

How to discover the fun of reading? : A qualitative study of how primary school teachers work when motivating students to read fiction

Karlsson, Julia January 2022 (has links)
The teaching of the Swedish subject should stimulate students' desire to read, but far from all students are inherently motivated to read. The present study deals with the relationship between students' reading of fiction and motivation. The aim of the thesis is to increase knowledge about how teachers in the Swedish subject describe their work to motivate students to read fiction in grades 4-6. This aim was fulfilled through the following research questions: How do teachers describe their choice of method when teaching to increase students reading motivation? What factors make students more or less motivated to read fiction according to teachers? How do teachers think about the selection of fiction to increase students' reading motivation? To fulfill the aim of the study, a qualitative method was used through semi-structured interviews with four active primary school teachers. The collected material was analyzed thematically through a lens of self-determination theory (SDT) which helps to understand how people are motivated to act in a certain way. The results of the study show that teachers experience difficulties in motivating students to read fiction. On the other hand, it appears that reading aloud, group reading, book talks and books that live up to the individual's interests prove to be motivating for the students. The teachers experience that the students are motivated to read fiction if the teaching has a clear purpose. There are external factors that make students less motivated to read, an example that teachers highlight is the increasingly dominant role that the digital technology plays in society.
