The use of growth regulators as a technique that allows reduction in plant height and consequent strengthening of the stalks might be an option for elimination of lodging in plants, thus avoiding losses of the crop. However, the information on the subject is still scarce. Therefore, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of doses (zero; 37,5; 75,0; 112,5 e 150,0 g ha-1 of active ingredient) and times of application of ethyl-trinexapac (6th leaf, 7th leaf and 8th leaf completely formed in the main stem) during the development of the upland rice crop irrigated by sprinkler. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks, arranged in a 5x3 factorial scheme, with four repetitions. It was developed in the experimental area of Engineering University- UNESP at the Ilha Solteira, São Paulo State, Brazil – Campus, located in Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, during the season of 2016/17, using the cultivar BRS Esmeralda. The components of production, plant height, lodging, grain yield, industrial yield and economic viability were evaluated. Due to climatic factors like rains and strong winds on the eve of the harvest, plots in which they did not receive the application of the regulator completely lodging. Applications for the eighth leaf in addition to promoting higher number of dry grains, the doses of 75.0, 112.5 and 150.0 g ha-1 of active ingredient provide lower values for plant height, weight of 100 grains, hectoliter weight, yield of benefit and whole grains, reducing the productivity of grains, and negatively influencing economic profitability. It was observed that ethyl-trinexapac should be applied on the occasion of the seventh leaf at the dose of 75 g ha-1 of active ingredient, considering the reduction of plant height, lodging decrease and grain yield. Ethyl-trinexapac when applied on the occasion of the sixth or seventh leaf in the dose of 75 g ha-1 of active ingredient, provides higher values of gross revenue, operating profit and profitability index, and lower values for break-even price, ensuring greater profitability to the producer. Applications for the eighth leaf at doses of 75.0, 112.5 and 150.0 g ha-1 are not recommended, because it has negative effects on the components of productivity and is not economically profitable to the producer.

Os migrantes mineiros vendedores de mandioca nas ruas de São Paulo / Migrants from Minas Gerais that sell cassava on the streets of São Paulo

Maria Creuza Gonçalves 25 February 2011 (has links)
This study has as object the migrant from Minas Gerais that works as door-to-door seller of cassava in cart-hand in the streets of the metropolis of São Paulo and aims to unveil how the migrant worker is integrated in this city. The analysis prioritizes the migrant who presents a specific form of organization in the door-to-door sale of cassava. The sellers of cassava are organized by relative lodging as a way to form a team for door-to-door cassava sale. The research was based on a qualitative empirical study conducted in three lodging in the metropolis. The economic integration of these migrants in the metropolis has occurred from the 1990s, during a period of changes in the general labor market conditions in the metropolis of São Paulo. This period is marked by the shrinking number of jobs, the deterioration in general labor market conditions, the expansion of informal and precarious work. The queues on the doors of the factories disappear and the brokering service to repositioning the workers into the labor market increases. In the case of cassava sellers the social networks conform as kinship networks that fit in the metropolis and constitute an intermediation market of rural migrant manpower to work in São Paulos Metropolis. These cassava sellers subvert the order and enter rural qualifications in the order of the metropolitan labor.

The carnival is considered, besides the most celebration in the whole country, a great showcase and a great moment to the Brazilian's tourism. With very expressive numbers, carnival has been increasing as great factor to Brazilian's economy and one of its main destinations, Rio de Janeiro, is no exception to this reality. This present work attempted to check the motivation of these tourists, who attend the block of the city's street, in choosing the hosting and which are the most used typologies by them. For such, it was necessary to analyze if the hospitality, both public and commercial, is a differencial in Rio de Janeiro to other tourists. Thereunto, 101 forms were applied for three days of the city's carnival's street in the year of 2014. The results collected show it explicitly that the tourist that attends the carnival's street in Rio de Janeiro is a hybrid of the tourist of experience and the demanding tourist, has an evident preference in staying in hotels-the most traditional typology of hospitality, even with other cheapest means, which are offered by the city.

The impact of emotion on the formation of customers’ repeat visit intentions in the lodging industry

Han, Heesup January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Hotel, Restaurant, Institution Management & Dietetics / Ki-Joon Back / The objectives of this research were to address the impacts of positive and negative emotions on customers’ satisfaction and customers’ repeat visit intentions, and to investigate the mediating effect of customer satisfaction on the relationship between emotion and customers’ repeat visit intentions. A theoretical model of the formation of repeat visit intentions was proposed through a comprehensive review of the literature. Richins’ Consumption Emotion Set (1997) was modified to make it suitable for application in the lodging industry. The modifications were based on the participants’ responses to each emotion descriptor in the pilot test. Surveys were completed by graduate students and faculty members, undergraduate students at a Midwestern university, and conference attendees. Of 259 surveys returned, 248 responses were used for data analysis. Data were analyzed using factor analysis and a series of regression analysis. Positive and negative consumption emotions were found to have a significant effect on customer satisfaction and repeat visit intentions. Results also provided evidence of a significant association between customer satisfaction and repeat visit intentions. Customer satisfaction was found to be a full mediator in the relationship between customers’ positive and negative consumption emotions and repeat visit intentions. The loss aversion of the prospect theory was empirically supported in the formation of customers’ repeat visit intentions since results indicate that negative emotion has a greater influence on customer satisfaction and customers’ repeat visit intentions. Results support the importance of considering the impact of customers’ emotions on post-purchasing behaviors when developing better marketing and service strategies to achieve higher occupancy rate and retain customers.

A case study: creating and sustaining competitive advantage through an information technology application in the lodging industry

Cho, Wonae 03 October 2007 (has links)
The use of information technology (IT) is becoming an essential component within the commercial sector. While large number of companies have adopted IT applications to achieve competitive advantage, and number of studies have been done on competitive advantage through an IT application, it is not clear what the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage is. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage and how to create and sustain competitive advantage through an IT application. For that purpose, this study adopted Sethi and King's (1994) instrumental tool, while the theory of resource based view of the firm (RBV) was the theoretical underpinning for the investigation of how to create and sustain competitive advantage through an IT application. In other words, this study examined how an IT application impacts the seven dimensions which are attributes of competitive advantage through an IT application, and how a firm's resources and capabilities, which are measured in three dimensions. moderate the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage. The three dimensions were identified from the review of literature concerning on the theory of RBV. / Ph. D.

The Relationship Between Perceived Personal Fairness, Social Fairness, Hotel Cancellation Policies And Consumer Patronage

Smith, Scott J 01 January 2012 (has links)
The objective of the study was to examine the relationships between the concepts of personal fairness and social fairness and hotel cancellation policies. These relationships will be explored using the framework of Prospect Theory in terms of consumer patronage (willingnessto-purchase and word-of-mouth). This study begins with a brief history of the development of the lodging industry in the United States from inns and taverns to the modern hotel industry that is a critical sector of the hospitality and tourism economy. Current statistics are provided regarding the U.S. and Central Florida hotel industry in order to provide both a national and local economic perspective. The study also provides relevant statistics regarding U.S. domestic traveller information. The included literature review consists of concepts of mental accounting theory, economic utility theory, prospect theory, personal fairness, social fairness, and consumer patronage. The study also discusses how the lodging industry is unique in its implementation of reservation cancellation policies when compared against other industries. Research regarding merchandise return policies is also discussed here. The study was designed to investigate three separate components of both personal and social fairness. The first component investigated the effects of hotel rate price increases and discounts on personal fairness when compared against an existing reference price. The second component studied the perceptions of social fairness on three established hotel cancellation policies. The third component introduces a treatment of distributive and procedural fairness violations as a moderator to observe the effects on consumer patronage for the same three hotel cancellation policies. iv The data were collected from 415 hotel guests staying in Central Florida hotels near the Orlando international airport using an experimental method which provided different written scenarios regarding hotel pricing and three different hotel cancellation policies. The data was then analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), MANOVA and Tukey’s Post Hoc test to provide results that allowed the comparison of effects on each in terms of consumer patronage. The study results indicated that that price increases against established reference prices had a significant negative effect on consumer patronage whereas discounts of the same magnitude had a significant effect only in the middle range. Included smaller and large discounts did not have a significant effect on consumer patronage outside of the middle range. The study results also indicated that there was significant difference in consumer patronage between an Open cancellation policy and a 48 Hour Cancellation Policy. There is a significant difference in consumer patronage when a No Refund policy is compared against both the Open Cancellation Policy and the 48 Hour Cancellation Policy. The study results also show that a violation of either Distributive Fairness or Procedural Fairness has a significant negative effect on consumer patronage for both an Open Cancellation policy and 48 Hour Cancellation Policy. However, when Distributive Fairness or Procedural Fairness violations are introduced as a moderator, there is no significant effect on a No Refund Cancellation Policy. The study and its ensuing results are of importance to the academic community in that it provides additional scholarly support to both Prospect Theory and the theory of mental accounting and the roles that each plays in consumer behavior. From an industry practitioner perspective, the current results provide insight into hotel consumer’s attitudes regarding rate increases/ discounts and the implementation of the three different hotel cancelation policies. The v results can be utilized to provide justification and guidance in altering or establishing hotel cancellation policies that hotel consumers consider to be fair.

Comparative Mapping of QTLs Affecting Oil Content, Oil Composition, and other Agronomically Important Traits in Oat (Avena sativa L.)

Hizbai, Biniam T. 01 November 2012 (has links)
Groat oil content and composition are important quality traits in oats (Avena sativa L). These traits are controlled by many genes with additive effects. The chromosomal regions containing these genes, known as quantitative trait loci (QTL), can be discovered through their close association with markers. This study investigated total oil content and fatty acid components in an oat breeding population derived from a cross between high oil ('Dal') and low oil ('Exeter') parents. A genetic map consisting of 475 DArT (Diversity Array Technology) markers spanning 1271.8 cM across 40 linkage groups was constructed. QTL analysis for groat oil content and composition was conducted using grain samples grown at Aberdeen, ID in 1997. QTL analysis for multiple agronomic traits was also conducted using data collected from hill plots and field plots in Ottawa, ON in 2010. QTLs for oil content, palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1), linoleic acid (18:2) and linolenic acid (18:3) were identified. Two of the QTLs associated with oil content were also associated with all of the fatty acids examined in this study, and most oil-related QTL showed similar patterns of effect on the fatty acid profile. These results suggest the presence of pleiotropic effects on oil-related traits through influences at specific nodes of the oil synthesis pathway. In addition, 12 QTL-associated markers (likely representing nine unique regions) were associated with plant height, heading date, lodging, and protein content. The results of this study will provide information for molecular breeding as well as insight into the genetic mechanisms controlling oil biosynthesis in oat.

Made available in DSpace on 2017-07-25T19:29:56Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Paulo Gallo.pdf: 1634093 bytes, checksum: f84f8b79e7d1355234216b134966f01a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-13 / The presence of Diabrotica speciosa larvae causes damage to corn root system and reduction in grain yield, mainly in second season crops. Applying insecticide in the seed furrow can be effective, but this assumes a form of preventive control and implies higher production costs and environmental impact. We evaluated the efficacy of genotypes AG7000RW and DKB330RW (Cry3Bb1) and their isolines to reduce the damage caused by D. speciosa larvae to corn root system, the efficacy of the insecticide fipronil applied in the furrow, and the effect of the interaction of both treatments on the yield of maize hybrids, as well as the planting date when the most severe damage occurs. The efficacy experiment was carried out in Itaberá, SP, in no-till planting system after oat crop. The damage to the roots was evaluated 52 days after emergence, using a visual score according to its intensity. Stalk lodging was determined by counting the plants leaning more than 25º in relation to its own axis at harvest. Genotypes AG7000 and DKB330 with no insecticide application presented damage and the resulting scores were 1.62 and 1.85, whereas the scores of their Bt isolines were 0.25 and 0.24, respectively. Genotypes AG7000 and AG700RW had the highest percentage of matter and amount of dry root in relation to DKB330 and DKB330RW, regardless of insecticide application. Stalk lodging of 46.7% found in non-Bt genotype DKB330 with no insecticide application reflected negatively on the yield of this treatment. In contrast, with insecticide application, stalk lodging ranged from 0.2% to 2.2% between genotypes, not influencing their yield. Cry3Bb1 protein was effective in reducing the damage to the root regardless of the genotype tested. Genotypes with high yield potential and lower root mass may present higher yield response when protected by the toxin or insecticide in the presence of a large larval population. In the 2010/2011 season, we assessed the damage in non-Bt corn root at four planting dates in Itaberá (10/14, 11/3, 11/25, and 12/20) and three in Castro, PR (9/29, 10/21, and 11/11). In the following season, 2011/2012, we evaluated six planting dates in Itaberá (9/21, 10/18, 11/21, 12/28, 1/30, and 2/20) and four in Castro (9/20, 10/10, 10/30, and 11/20). We observed that, from the second planting date on, the root damage reached scores over 3.0 and remained above 4.0 in all other planting dates in Itaberá in both seasons. In Castro, only the seeding performed in 11/20/2011 reached a score above 3.0. The use of protection in corn root, by applying insecticide or toxin, presented a greater response in sowing carried out from October on in the region of Itaberá.
