Heating the reeds : Just intonation and learning the shō

Hållsten, Mattias January 2022 (has links)
This text outlines recent developments in my artistic practice. The two underlying themes of this work are my intonation practice, with and emphasis on just intonation, as well as the Japanese mouth-organ shō, which I am currently learning to play. The text discusses these topics, along with four of my recent works: Hypothermia for bass drum (2020) for gran cassa and electronics; Stycke för cembalo och elektronik (2021) for harpsichord and electronics; Breathing, bowing (2022) for viola da gamba and electronics; and Solo #1 (2022) for shō and unfiltered sawtooth waves. In these four pieces, I have explored different ways for the electronics to relate to and interact with the respective acoustic instruments with regards to intonation, spectromorphology and timbre. Both the pieces and the two underlying themes have not only been ventures into new aesthetic and technological areas, but they have also shaped my outlook on composition and the relationship between composer and musician. /
The presentation refers to my graduation concert, where two of the pieces discussed in this text were presented: Breathing, bowing and Solo #1. Along with these pieces, during the concert a newly composed ensemble piece was presented with me playing the shō alongside Johan Arrias (soprano saxophone), Gard Nergaard (hardingfela) and Vilhelm Bromander (contrabass).

Guérette, Catherine 04 1900 (has links)
This research aims to identify the complexity of the concept of the self in the Stoic philosophy of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. First, we will lay the bases of Stoic physics which allow us to grasp the paradox of the existence of singular individualities within the great universal Whole. To do this, we will study the Stoic corporeist theory as well as the concepts of idia poiotês and oikeiôsis forged by ancient Stoicism, but also the Epictean prohairesis. This will lead us to address the concept of hêgemonikon which is central in the conception of the self for Marcus Aurelius. Secondly, we will approach the characteristics of the ruling part of the soul through the study of the disciplines of the self and its interior otherness. Thus, we will see how the self is not a fixed datum, but a relational space in constant evolution. Finally, we will address the question of self-construction, which will lead us to consider the importance of the work on oneself for Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The question that will guide our research is to grasp what essentially constitutes the self when it is presented as a space in constant development, open to otherness and which is not given once and for all but constructed.

Exploration of RDA-Based MARC21 Subject Metadata in Worldcat Database and Its Readiness to Support Linked Data Functionality

Zavalin, Vyacheslav I. 08 1900 (has links)
Subject of information entity is one of the fundamental concepts in the field of information science. Subject of any document represents its intellectual potential -- 'aboutness' of the document. Traditionally, subject (along with title and author) is the one of three major ways to access information, so subject metadata plays a central role in this process and the role is constantly growing. Previous research concluded that the larger bibliographic database is, the richer subject vocabularies and classification schemes are needed to support information discovery. Further, a high proportion of information objects are unretrievable without subject headings in metadata records. This exploratory study provides the analysis of the subject metadata in MARC 21 bibliographic records created in 2020; and develops understanding of the level and patterns of 'aboutness' representation in the MARC 21 bibliographic records. Study also examines how these records apply the recent RDA and MARC21 guidelines and features intended to support functionality in a Linked Data environment. Methods of Social Network Analysis were applied along with content analysis, to answer research questions of this study. Suggestions for future research, implications for education, and practical recommendations for library metadata creation and management are discussed.

Lavoie, Céline 23 February 2022 (has links)

Schneider, Marlen 01 June 2015 (has links)
The portrait historié was one of the most characteristic and revealing phenomena of French court society, closely relying on this particular milieu’s artistic and cultural practices, and was thus very much appreciated during the second half of the seventeenth century and the first decades of the eighteenth century. Members of the social elites all over Europe and especially in France chose to sit in mythological or historicized costumes for renowned artists such as Nicolas de Largillierre, Pierre Gobert, François de Troy, Jean-Marc Nattier or Jean Raoux. An extensive study of this particular kind of portraiture, which is still one of the desiderata in art historical research, might generally contribute to scientific research on French portraits from the Ancien Régime. In order to define the artistic, cultural and social impact and status of portraits historiés, the thesis examines the institutional, iconographic and formal evolution of the genre, its cultural context and influences, its social functions, as well as its reception in 18th century public sphere and especially in the context of enlightened discourse. Resulting from the moral and esthetic principles of court society, these cultural and artistic expressions derived from the absolutist French monarchy lost their legitimation during a period of political and social change and revolution.

Filosofická interpretace děl Marca Chagalla / Philosophical interpretation of works of Marc Chagall

JINDRÁKOVÁ, Edita January 2014 (has links)
This thesis covers the interpretation of life and work of Marc Chagall, jewish painter of 20th century. Goal of the thesis is to highlight symbolic motives of his work, and later on interpret those on selected pieces. The thesis is divided into four parts. First part is devoted to the life of the painter and his jewish origin, which had a significant influence on the character of his work. Second part covers the meaning of symbols in art and religon in general. Third tries to compare Chagall's conveyance with two jewish philosophers of the dialog: E. Lévinas and F. Rosenzweig. Fourth then interprets selected pieces with philosophical or religious extent. Whole thesis is based on the conception that art is able to convey messages and interpret the world around us.

Words and artworks in the twelfth century and beyond : the thirteenth-century manuscript Marcianus gr. 524 and the twelfth-century dedicatory epigrams on works of art

Spingou, Foteini January 2012 (has links)
The thesis is divided into three sections. The first section discusses the manuscript Marcianus graecus 524, the second looks at the Greek text of the dedicatory epigrams on works of art from the same manuscript, and the third puts these texts in their context. In the first part, the compilation of the manuscript is analysed. I suggest that the manuscript was copied mainly by one individual scribe living in Constantinople at the end of the thirteenth century. He copied the quires individually, but at some point he put all these quires together, added new quires, and compiled an anthology of poetry. The scribe’s connection to the Planudean School and the Petra monastery in Constantinople is discussed. Although their relationship remains inconclusive, the manuscript provides evidence regarding the literary interests of late-thirteenth-century intellectuals. The second part contains thirty-five unpublished dedicatory epigrams on works of art. New readings are offered for the text of previously published epigrams. The third section analyses the dedicatory epigrams on works of art in their context. The first chapter of this section discusses the epigrams as Gebrauchstexte, i.e. texts with a practical use. The difference between epigrams intended to be inscribed and epigrams intended to be performed is highlighted. In the next chapter of this part, La poésie de l’objet, the composition of the dedicatory epigrams is discussed. The conventional character of the epigrams suggests that the poetics express the ritual aspect of the epigram. The last chapter considers the texts from a more pragmatic angle. After a short discussion of the objects on which the epigrams were written, the mechanisms of the twelfth-century art market are presented based on evidence taken mainly from the epigrams. At the end of this part, conclusions are drawn on the understanding of these texts in the twelfth century.

Carignan, Marie-Josée 09 1900 (has links)
In 2005, in the wake of the adoption of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) and its attendant restrictions on incarceration, the Centre jeunesse de Montréal - Institut universitaire (CJM-IU) [Montreal youth centre - University institute] launched a community-oriented intensive differential case management program (IDCMP). The clinical internship reported here had the following objectives: allow participation in the cross-sectional implementation of the program, improve the program’s robustness, support program specialists, and develop an assessment tool that would improve this program’s referral process. The results of this internship indicated the necessity of reviewing the IDCMP’s implementation process, specifically through constructive, pedagogical assessment of the congruence of the plan’s theoretical model and day-to-day application, as well of the obstacles encountered. A qualitative methodology appeared appropriate for these purposes. Two techniques were used: field participant observation, and content analysis of written documents (committee minutes). Chen's Program Action Model and the Texas Christian University (TCU) Program Change Model provided the conceptual framework for the internship report. The former’s six components were the basis for an assessment checklist and oriented the global overview of the implementation of the IDCMP, while the latter provided a model of the main stages of change and the individual, organizational, and program-specific factors that favour or hinder innovation. The results indicate that overcoming obstacles to the application of the IDCMP would not require any significant changes to the program’s underlying theoretical basis. Modifications of the program’s implementation process are presented. In conclusion, we consider that the successful implementation of the IDCMP is dependent on certain conditions, and will always be subject to constraints.

Attitudes intolérantes et initiatives législatives contre les chrétiens à l'époque de Marc-Aurèle : entre histoire et propagande politique : un réexamen de la vexata quaestio / Intolerant attitudes and legislative initiatives against Christians in the time of Marcus Aurelius : between history and political propaganda : a re-examination of the vexata quaestio

Provenzano, Marco 23 September 2017 (has links)
This work aims to provide an original and thorough exploration of the relationship between Marcus Aurelius and the Christians by means of an in-depth analysis of the available historical, literary, epigraphic, numismatic, and legal sources. Specifically, it will show that the a posteriori view of Marcus Aurelius as protector Christianorum, apparently introduced by Tertullian, is unfounded. In support of this argument, a legal analysis of the available sources will show that, far from enjoying legal protection during the Principality of Marcus Aurelius, Christians were still subject to Trajan’s laws. The true reasons underlying the policy of Marcus Aurelius towards the Christians will be investigated by comparing the Middle Platonism of Justin Martyr with the stoic meditations of the princeps. In particular, the philosophical interpretation of the attitude deemed suitable in the face of death will provide an insight into the reasons that led to the wave of violence and to the trials of Christians under Marcus Aurelius’ rule.
