The research presented here aims to analyze the manga Mushishi, by Yuki Urushibara (1999-2008), in regard to tradition and contemporaneity as a representation of a history and a people. To reach such goals, a historical survey based on the evolution of postwar Japan and its worldwide conquest through pop culture entertainment initiates thought, based on the contemporaneous context of Agamben (2009) followed later by an analysis comparative analysis between western comics and Japanese manga, in order to establish a basis for the exchange of influences between the two, which also leads to illustrate market issues and the principles of consumer acceptance of media. The analysis regarding the points of identity and place of the social being is made from the theories of Nietzche (1983-2011) and Rolnik (1993), which put in question the human being as social agent and actor of his own world, as well as the application of the concepts of catharsis and self-recognition of Aristotle (2008), which, after applied to the work in question, reveals how the manga, exemplified by Mushishi, can be faithful portraits of a people or a time.

Previous issue date: 2013-05-06 / Relatively recent in Brazil, the manga won fans of all ages and genres
through titles like Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Rurouni Kenshin, One Piece
and others. Many of its stories have historical background or reference parts of
Japanese history, especially of samurai and shinobi (ninja), which has
awakened the interest of Brazilian readers, hitherto accustomed to Western
stories that mostly were purely fictional. All this notoriety gained by manga in
the West drew the attention of Western scholars, among which we mention
Sonia Bibe Luyten (2000); Paul Gravett (2006) and Robin Brenner (2007),
leading them to conduct research ranging from appearance manga of the role
played by them in Japanese culture today. Taking this into consideration, this
study aimed at evaluating how three mangaká (Chrono Nanae, Watsuki
Nobuhiro and Sorachi Hideaki) make use of their works to convey to his readers
his view on certain events in the Meiji Restoration, whether through narrative or
the representation of historical characters inserted into his plots / Relativamente recentes no Brasil, os mangás conquistaram fãs de

Mariko Mori and Takashi Murakami and the crisis of Japanese identityLambertson, Kristen 11 1900 (has links)
In the mid-1990s, Japanese artists Mariko Mori (b. 1962) and Takashi Murakami (b. 1967) began creating works that referenced Japanese popular culture tropes such as sexuality, technology and the idea of kawaii, or cute. These tropes were associated with emerging youth cultures instigating a “soft rebellion” against social conventions. While emancipated female youths, or shōjo, were criticized for lifestyles based on the consumption of kawaii goods, their male contemporaries, the otaku were demonized for a fetishization of kawaii girls and technology through anime and manga, or animation and comic books. Destabilizing the nation’s patriarchal theory of cultural uniqueness, or nihonjinron, the youth triggered fears of a growing infantilized, feminized automaton ‘alien’ society during Japan’s economically tumultuous 1990s.
In response to these trends, Mori and Murakami create works and personae that celebrate Japan’s emerging heterogeneity and reveal that Japan’s fear of the ‘alien within’ is a result of a tenuous post-war Japanese-American relationship. But in denoting America’s position in Japan’s psyche, Mori’s and Murakami’s illustration of Japan as both victim and threat encourages Orientalist and Techno-Orientalist readings. The artists’ ambivalence towards Western stereotypes in their works and personae, as well as their distortion of boundaries between commercial and fine art, intimate a collusion between commercialization, art and cultural identity. Such acts suggest that in the global economy of art production, Japanese cultural identity has become as much as a brand, as art a commodity.
In this ambivalent perspective, the artists isolate the relatively recent difficulty of enunciating Japanese cultural identity in the international framework. With the downfall of its cultural homogeneity theory, Japan faced a crisis of representation. Self-Orientalization emerged as a cultural imperative for stabilizing a coherent national identity, transposing blame for Japan’s social and economic disrepair onto America. But by relocating Japanese self-Orientalization within the global art market, Mori and Murakami suggest that as non-Western artists, economic viability is based upon their ability to cultivate desirability, not necessarily authenticity. In the international realm, national identity has become a brand based upon the economies of desire, predicated by external consumption, rather than an internalized production of meaning. / Arts, Faculty of / Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of / Graduate

Young British readers' engagement with mangaTsai, Yi-Shan January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents young British readers? engagement with manga regarding literary, aesthetic, social, and cultural dimensions. The study explores young readers? points of views of their reading preference ? manga. I investigated how children interpreted manga, with respect to the artistic techniques, the embedded ideologies, and the cultural elements therein. I also looked into children?s participation in manga fandom and its social meanings. This allowed me to explore what attracted British readers to this exotic text. This study involved 16 participants from two schools, aged between 10 and 15, with genders represented equally. The participants were grouped by gender in each school. Each group of students received three group interviews based on three manga that they were required to read in advance. Individual interviews with each student followed the group interviews, and all the students were asked to keep reading reflections. The findings show that the attraction of participants to manga includes at least five dimensions. First, manga is a visually rich text, which not only had great power in rendering vicarious experiences to the students, but also allowed the struggling students to grasp the meanings of the text better. Second, both the verbal and the visual storytelling were characterised as fragmentary, which inspired the students? imagination to join the creation of the story. Third, manga provided a temporary shelter where the participants could forget a stressful and frustrating reality. In addition, they felt that they gained renewed hope, refreshed energy, and insights to face potential challenges and difficulties in their lives. Fourth, the elements of Japaneseness and otherness made manga reading a rich experience of an exotic culture. Fifth, manga afforded collective pleasures in fan communities where the students could express their passion and gained a sense of identity.

Caracterização química e enzimática do processo de adoçamento da manga \'Keitt\' / Chemical and enzymatic characterization of the mango Keitt sweetening processAna Paula Fioravante Bernardes Silva 16 June 2004 (has links)
Sweetening is one of the most important characteristics concerning ripe fruit. However, physiological and biochemical changes associated to mango fruit ripening process, including mango sweetening, is still poor understood. In this work the synthesis and breakdown of the starch were studied focusing starch, amylose, and soluble sugars content. Also the activities of some enzymes that participate in starch metabolism were evaluated during development and ripening of mango \'Keitt\'. Thought Scanning Electron Microscopy, granule starch shape and superficial changes related to the degree of mango ripening, were investigated. Results shown that mango fruit (cv. Keitt) has not a typical profile of ethylene and respiration during the ripening process, with very low leveis of both parameters. There was a massive conversion of the starch accumulated (~8 % )during fruit development to soluble sugar (~10 %), with a predominance of sucrose. The activity of α-amylase increased at least 20 times during fruit development while β:-amylase showed detectable activity after fruit harvesting. Starchphosphorylases and isoamylases activities can be linked with both starch synthesis and degradation. Granule starch isolated from mango, showed spherical shape and small size (~20 µm) when the mango achieve full starch content (~3 days after harvest), with about 25 % of amylose. During fruit ripening, granule size suffered superficial corrosion and decreased in size (~6 µm). SDS-PAGE gels showed that after harvesting increased the number of starch bounded proteins with low and high molecular weight, inclusive inside the granule. These proteins can be associated with starch degradation process.

Tecknade serier i klassrummet : Elevers attityd till serier i årskurs 6 / Comics in the classroom : Students' attitude to comics in grade 6Lindstedt Önneskog, Theréz January 2019 (has links)

Yaoi manga a slash fanfiction pohledem sociologie / Yaoi Manga and Slash Fanfiction in a Sociological Point of ViewMusilová, Věra January 2015 (has links)
This thesis deals with slash fanfiction and yaoi manga, disparate yet similar phenomena of fan culture. Yaoi manga as genre of Japanese comics created by women and dedicated to women , and slash fanfiction as women's reaction to pop culture generally made by male authors, are both genres dealing with a romantic relationship between two men characters. This relationship is portrayed as an innocent romantic story as well as a hardcore pornography. The autor aims to describe the terms and inctroduce some of the most influential approaches to research of the topic. Author is interested in the issue in the way of cultural and gender approach. Cultural perspective provides a summary of approaches of Frankfurt and Birmingham schools, clarifys point of view of Abercrombie and Longhurst and other authors on the current and future trends in development of audiences. Mapping the internet, important space for the fan communitiy, is also a part of this paper. Gender perspective provides a description of the points of view on the women's status in popular culture, explains the motivation of the readers/authors related to the issue of homosexuality, and describes opinions of different feminisms about pornography. Research among fangirls and fanboys or authors of slash fanfiction and yaoi manga is included.

Environmental Dependence of H-alpha Disks in Nearby Star-Forming GalaxiesWightman, Jacqueline N. January 2020 (has links)
We use Integral Field Unit (IFU) data for a subset of galaxies in the MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) sample to investigate the environmental dependence of H-alpha properties for nearby star-forming galaxies. We characterize the non-AGN H-alpha emission for galaxies living in different host environments with radial gradient measurements, half-light radii, as well as measures of concentration and asymmetry. We find that global specific star formation rates (sSFR) are lower in nearby star-forming galaxies in groups and clusters compared to those in the field, and the lowest in high density environments such as group or cluster centres. From the resolved data we find that the overall reduction in H-alpha emission in star-forming galaxies in denser environments occurs across the face of these galaxies, suggesting starvation as a primary quenching mechanism. We further find that H-alpha disks are truncated in group galaxies that live nearer the center of the halo compared to those in the outer halo or field, which may be due to ram pressure stripping in these dense environments. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc) / In order to understand the evolution of galaxies over time, it is necessary to determine the relative importance of external and internal factors that affect galaxy star formation. We know that galaxies in dense environments have less star formation (are quenched) compared to galaxies in the field. However, the mechanisms that dominate this quenching are less well constrained. We use a sample of galaxies in the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to investigate the dependence of star formation on other galaxy properties as well as properties of the host environment. We find that galaxies have reduced H-alpha emission, a signature of star formation, across the entire face of the galaxy in groups and clusters compared to galaxies in the field. We further find that galaxies nearer the centre of the group or cluster halo have truncated H-alpha disks compared to galaxies in the outer part of the halo or in the field.
