Missing children is one of the horrors that we are confronted with in today's society. The case study method, a feminist co-search methodology, is used to give a missing child's mother the opportunity to tell and re-tell the painful story. During this co-search process the following aspects of doing ethics and pastoral care and counselling with the mother are constantly negotiated. The term "missing child" is defined and the relevance between the distinction of "missing children" and "run-away children" is discussed. Furthermore, this study explores the many diverse practices of narrative pastoral care and counselling with parents of missing children within an economically disadvantaged community. Making meaning in anticipatory mourning : reflections by caregiving spouses of cancer patientsEsterhuizen, Estelle Leonie 11 1900 (has links)
This insider research journey explores the meaning-making processes of female spousal caregivers in anticipatory mourning and the knowledges which they have gained in retrospect. The research traces the social constructions of meaning and how they influence the process of meaning-making. A phenomenological study was undertaken in which unstructured interviews were conducted with five bereaved participants, highlighting the unique way in which each woman made meaning of loss in anticipatory mourning. The main phenomenological themes to emerge from their meaning-making were: a) the significance of time; b) challenges and gifts; c) witnessing the decline; d) paradoxes; e) the significance of the spousal relationship; and f) spirituality. The therapeutic effect of telling the life story is explored in this study and the need for contextual pastoral care that is specific to the state of anticipatory mourning is highlighted. This work was undertaken with a view to developing a textbook for United
States secondary schools on the subject of death and dying through a religious lens.
The purpose of this work is to provide high school teens with the means of coping
with loss and a foundation for crafting their own meaning of life and death.
Taking a close look at death attitudes among young people in the United
States, as well as high school faculty and staff for the purpose of determining whether
or not death education can be provided for public high school students, the work starts
from the premise that said death education, using a religious model, should be
provided for teenagers because the religious model provides the necessary elements of
idea, ritual, and community, so necessary for building a world-view. Research was
conducted in the form of survey and historical review to determine the efficacy of the
proposed course of study.
Upon analysis of the available information on death education history and
course offering, as well as analysis of the survey results, the conclusion was reached
that the provision of death education in the nation‟s public high schools would go a
long way to reducing death anxiety amongst United States teenagers, and also give the
adolescents a model for creating their own sense of meaning for all of life that

The value of narrative practices in pastoral conversationsDickson, Nicole 08 February 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to explore how narrative practices can be meaningful in pastoral conversations with women living with breast cancer. A theoretical collaboration between narrative therapy, feminism and pastoral theology has been used in order to facilitate meaning-making, to give ‘voice’ to local knowledge, and to co-create a more holistic understanding of the experiences of illness narratives and breast cancer. The methodology of this research is ‘interdisciplinary’ and uses qualitative, co-participatory action research and reflexivity as its research design. Conversations with the co-researchers explore illness narratives, breast cancer, spirituality and faith, life-giving relationships, femininity and body image, socially constructed discourses and pivotal moments that enable alternative stories. Values of respect, curiosity and listening have been upheld in order to provide a safe place for the co-researchers to give voice to their stories and experiences of breast cancer in a way that supports the researcher position of ‘witness’. / Practical Theology / M. The experience of psychologists after the suicide of their patientTeichert, Werner Melgeorge 12 1900 (has links)
Considering the high incidence of suicide in the South African context, the fact that suicide is considered an occupational hazard for psychologists, with more than half experiencing the suicide of a patient in their career and the dearth of post-suicide qualitative research among psychologists, the purpose of this study is to explore and describe the experience of psychologists after the suicide of their patient, and to develop guidelines as a framework of reference to assist psychologists in dealing with the suicide of their patient.
In keeping with a social constructionist ontological and ecosystemic epistemological theoretical framework, data was collected by means of meaning-making conversations with six purposively selected psychologists, with a minimum of five years‟ experience and at least one year having passed after the suicide of their patient.
The data was analysed independently by the researcher and an independent coder using Tesch‟s open and descriptive method. The present study found that, following the suicide of their patient, the participants were propelled into a myriad of acutely distressing emotions. They often described a suffocating sense of responsibility for the suicide and the lingering presence of their patient. The participants experienced feelings of guilt and self-doubt, often questioning their own professional competence.
The post-suicide process was described as being both a personally and professionally isolating event, due to the sense of having to carry the burden of the suicide alone for ethical reasons and fear of social stigmatisation.
The participants appeared to grapple with the paradoxical dance between their personal emotional realities and what they perceived to be “clinically” or “professionally” acceptable.
Having gone through the traumatic experience of losing a patient to suicide, most of the participants eventually found new wisdom, which helped them become wounded healers.
Based on these findings, post-vention guidelines with practical actions were developed to assist psychologists in dealing with the suicide of their patient. 本研究旨在探討研究生的希望信念、師徒功能、意義建構、學術熱情與情緒調節間的互動關係,以及這些變項對學術動機的影響。本研究以台灣地區公、私立研究所1028位研究生為研究對象,其中包含366位男性、662位女性。研究工具包括希望量表、師徒功能量表、意義建構量表、學術熱情量表、情緒調節量表與學術動機量表。本研究採用單因子多變量變異數分析與潛在變項模式分析進行資料分析。研究發現陳述如下:
一、 以希望信念、師徒功能與意義建構為自變項、以學術熱情與情緒調節能力為中介變項、以學術動機為依變項所建構的路徑模式獲得支持。亦即學術熱情與情緒調節能力會直接影響學術動機;希望信念、師徒功能與意義建構能力則會透過學術熱情與情緒調節能力間接影響學術動機。
二、 參與研究生具有希望信念、知覺到良好的師徒功能、具備意義建構與情緒調節能力、擁有學術熱情與動機。
三、 男性研究生的學術動機高於女性研究生。
四、 已畢業之碩士生的希望信念、所知覺到的師徒功能與意義建構能力均優於全職碩士生。
五、 博士生的希望信念、所知覺到的師徒功能、意義建構能力、學術熱情、情緒調節能力與學術動機皆優於碩士生。
六、 教育學院研究生之希望信念與學術熱情皆高於工學院研究生。
最後,根據本研究主要發現提出若干意見,以提供相關單位與人員在教育以及學術研究上之參考。 / The main purpose of this study was to explore the interactive relationships of graduate students’ belief in hope, perceived mentoring function, ability of meaning making, academic passion, and ability of emotion regulation, and further, how these variables might influence their academic motivation. The participants in this study were 1028 graduate students in Taiwan. Among the participants, 366 were males and 662 were females. Moreover, the employed instruments included the Inventory of Hope, the Inventory of Mentoring Function, the Inventory of Meaning Making, the Inventory of Academic Passion, the Inventory of Emotion Regulation, and the Inventory of Academic Motivation. The collected data was analyzed by one-way MANOVA and SEM. The main findings of this study were as follows:
1. The graduate students’ academic passion and ability of emotion regulation had direct effects on their academic motivation; moreover, the graduate students’ belief in hope, perceived mentoring function, and ability of meaning making had indirect effect on their academic motivation via academic passion and ability of emotion regulation.
2. The graduate students had an above-average level of belief in hope, academic passion, and academic motivation. Moreover, they perceived good mentoring function and had good ability of meaning making as well as emotion regulation.
3. Males had stronger academic motivation than females.
4. Graduated students had stronger belief in hope, perceived better mentoring function, and had better ability of meaning making than full-time students.
5. Doctoral students’ belief in hope, perceived mentoring function, ability of meaning making, ability of emotion regulation, academic passion, and academic motivation were better than those of master students.
6. Graduate students in College of Education had stronger belief in hope and academic passion than those in College of Engineering. Finally, the researcher proposed a few suggestions for education and academic research.

L’infirmière libanaise et le sens au travail en milieu hospitalierEl-Khoury, Maha 02 1900 (has links)
Cette étude vise à étoffer la base conceptuelle du phénomène de sens au travail permettant ainsi de mieux le comprendre et le saisir et cherche à proposer un modèle théorique pouvant expliquer le processus de construction d’un sens au travail par des infirmières libanaises. Le sens au travail se présente à la fois en tant qu’un processus qui émerge suite aux interactions dynamiques qui s’établissent entre un individu et son contexte de travail et en tant que produit qui s’exprime chez un individu au niveau de la satisfaction, la motivation, l’engagement organisationnel, la performance et la santé au travail. L’étude de ce phénomène constitue une nouvelle voie permettant d’apporter un nouvel éclairage à un contexte de travail, tel que le contexte libanais, qui souffre depuis des années d’un problème de pénurie du personnel infirmier.
L’interactionnisme symbolique a constitué le cadre épistémologique et méthodologique de cette étude qui a adopté une approche qualitative par théorisation ancrée. L’étude s’est déroulée dans une région libanaise auprès de neuf infirmières hospitalières exerçant la profession dans des contextes de travail variés. La collecte des données a été faite par le recours à des entrevues individuelles enregistrées sur un support numérique ; les données ont été par la suite transcrites et analysées suivant la méthode constructiviste de Charmaz (2006).
Les résultats ont permis de proposer un modèle théorique qui explique le processus de construction d’un sens au travail qui découle des interactions des infirmières libanaises avec les divers éléments du contexte de travail. Ces infirmières ont développé une représentation du contexte de travail marquée par une surcharge de travail, un salaire inadéquat, des opportunités de développement et d’avancement professionnel réduites, un comportement inéquitable des supérieurs et un image publique dévalorisée de l’infirmière. Ce contexte porte atteinte à la satisfaction de trois objectifs recherchés par ces infirmières à travers leur travail et qui sont : 1) prendre soin des patients ; 2) subvenir à ses propres besoins ; et 3) être reconnue en tant que professionnelle. Afin de construire un sens au travail et composer avec ce contexte contraignant, les infirmières se basent sur leurs ressources intrinsèques. La valorisation de l’infirmière et du travail infirmier, la satisfaction de l’effort fourni, l’actualisation de soi et l’avancement professionnel permettent à ces infirmières de protéger et de maintenir un sens au travail. Finalement, il était possible de conceptualiser le sens au travail en tant qu’un phénomène subjectif et multidimensionnel, nourri par l’amour de la profession et se traduisant par un travail qui répond aux attentes des infirmières.
Les connaissances qui ont émergé de cette étude pourront aider à mettre en place des stratégies personnelles et contextuelles permettant de favoriser le processus de construction de sens au travail chez les infirmières libanaises afin de réduire le problème de pénurie du personnel infirmier. Des pistes de recherches sont encore avancées et des recommandations pour la formation sont proposées. / This study aims to expand the conceptual basis of the phenomenon of meaning at work and seeks to provide a theoretical model to explain the process of constructing meaning at work by Lebanese nurses. The meaning at work is presented as a process that emerges through the dynamic interactions developed between an individual and his work environment and as a product that is expressed by the individual level of satisfaction, motivation, organizational commitment, performance and health at work. The study of this phenomenon is a new way to shed light to a work context, such as the Lebanese context, suffering for years from a problem of shortage of nurses.
Symbolic interactionism was the epistemological and methodological framework of this study based on a qualitative approach using grounded theory. The study was conducted in a region with nine Lebanese hospital nurses practicing the profession in various work contexts. Data collection was done by the use of individual interviews recorded on digital media; data were subsequently transcribed and analysed following the constructivist method developed by Charmaz (2006).
The results were used to propose a theoretical model that explains the process of constructing meaningful work that arises from interactions of the Lebanese nurses with the various elements of their work context. These nurses have developed a representation of the work context marked by an excessive workload, an inadequate pay, an reduced opportunities for development and professional advancement, an unfair behaviour of their supervisors and a devalued nurse’s public image. This context affects the satisfaction of these three objectives that emerged threw analysis witch are pursuit by these nurses through their work: 1) to take care for patients; 2) to meet they one needs; and 3) to be recognized as a professional. These nurses construct meaning at work and compose with theses context constraints by using their personal resources. By enhancing the value of the nurse and the value of her work, by getting satisfied threw their effort, by self-actualization and career advancement, these nurses get to protect and maintain meaningful work. Finally, the meaning at work could be conceptualized as a subjective and multidimensional positive phenomenon fuelled by the love of the profession and resulting in work that meets the expectations of nurses.
Knowledge that emerged from this study will help develop personal and contextual strategies to foster the process of construction of meaning at work in order to reduce the shortage of nurses. Research avenues and recommendations for education are suggested.

Médiation de l'architecture par l'exposition et sa réception par des visiteurs experts et non experts / Mediating architecture through the exhibition media : the reception of architectural exhibits by expert and non-expert visitorsLaberge, Marie Elizabeth 11 October 2012 (has links)
Cette thèse s’intéresse à la médiation de l’architecture au musée et aux divers moyens employés pour communiquer le projet architectural en exposition. L’objectif est de mieux connaître la réception que font les visiteurs architectes et non-architectes des outils utilisés pour exposer les aspects variés du projet architectural. On s’entend pour dire que la communication du projet architectural par l’exposition n’est pas tâche facile. Des représentations diverses (dessins, maquettes, photographies, vidéos, etc.) sont utilisées pour exposer le bâti absent. Plusieurs des objets présentés sont complexes à interpréter, surtout pour un néophyte, notamment en raison des codes qu’ils contiennent. Une méthode souvent employée par les commissaires est la « mise en série » de divers types de représentations, chaque outil permettant d’accéder à des informations spécifiques sur le projet. Comme les objets présentés sont souvent difficiles d’accès et que leur présentation sous forme de série peut ajouter à la complexité, il apparaît important d’investiguer la manière dont les visiteurs font sens de ce type de dispositif. Cette recherche vise principalement à jeter les bases d’une connaissance empirique de la réception d’expositions d’architecture par les visiteurs. Six questions ont été retenues pour analyse : (1) Quels objets sont mobilisés par le visiteur? (2) Quels types d’opérations mentales sont faites en lien avec ces objets? (3) Quels sont les obstacles rencontrés, et que fait le visiteur suite à la rencontre d’un obstacle? (4) Quels aspects du projet architectural (matérialité, concept, contexte, etc.) retiennent l’attention du visiteur? (5) Comment le visiteur fait-il des liens entre les différents objets exposés sous forme de série? (6) Le profil professionnel des visiteurs (architectes vs non-architectes) a-t-il une influence sur la construction de sens? Le recueil de données auprès d’une trentaine de visiteurs s’est déroulé au Centre canadien d'architecture (CCA) de Montréal dans l’exposition « Perspectives de vie à Londres et à Tokyo imaginées par Stephen Taylor et Ryue Nishizawa ». Chaque participant visite l'exposition en compagnie de la chercheure avec qui il partage, au fur et à mesure de sa visite, ses pensées et émotions, selon la méthode des protocoles verbaux concomitants (aussi connue sous le nom de thinking aloud ou protocol analysis). L'ensemble des propos est enregistré pour permettre une retranscription exacte avant analyse. Plusieurs des résultats obtenus confirment des idées déjà avancées par les chercheurs telles la popularité des photographies, le peu d’intérêt de la part des non-architectes pour les plans, les aspects variés du projet mentionnés face aux objets exposés, ou encore l’établissement de liens entre les objets comme moyen d’identifier la série. D’autres résultats mettent plutôt en doute des affirmations retrouvées dans les écrits, mais encore jamais appuyées par des données empiriques. Par exemple, plusieurs commissaires considèrent que la maquette est un excellent outil pour communiquer l’architecture et qu’elle est appréciée de tous. Or, dans le cadre de la présente étude, la maquette est peu utilisée par les visiteurs. Le type de maquette et la manière dont elle est disposée dans l’espace peuvent ainsi rendre cet outil peu utile dans la construction de sens du visiteur. Plusieurs auteurs appréhendent des difficultés et des obstacles pour les visiteurs non-architectes. Les présents résultats confirment certaines difficultés des visiteurs néophytes, mais ils démontrent également que les architectes rencontrent eux aussi des obstacles variés / This thesis focusses on the mediation of architecture in the museum setting and on the different tools used to communicate the architectural project in the exhibition. The main goal of this research is to get a better knowledge and understanding of the reception of the different objects used to exhibit the many aspects of architectural projects by visitors (architects and non-architects). There is a general agreement on the fact that it is difficult to communicate architecture through the exhibition media. Many objects are typically used to exhibit the architectural project : drawings, models, photographs, videos and so forth. Some of these tools can be hard to understand, especially for a layperson, since they are coded objects. In order to better communicate the architectural project, curators often choose to depict it by presenting a series of objects, each tool conveying a different aspect of the building. This serial type of presentation can make the task even harder for some visitors. Since understanding an architectural project can be quite difficult for visitors, it appears important to investigate the meaning making of visitors of varying profiles. Six main questions were investigated in this thesis : (1) Which exhibition objects attracted the visitor’s attention? (2) What type of mental operations did the visitor do in relation to these objects? (3) Which obstacles did the visitor face, and what did he do when faced with such obstacles? (4) Which aspects of the architectural project (materiality, concept, context, etc.) attracted the visitor’s attention? (5) How did the visitor link the different objects presented in a serial manner? (6) Did the visitor’s professionnal profile (architect or non-architect) influence his meaning making? Data were collected among thirty visitors at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal during the exhibition « Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo by Stephen Taylor and Ryue Nishizawa ». Each participant was asked to express, as freely as possible, what he thought, saw, felt and imagined during the course of his visit, as is prescribed by the thinking aloud method (also known as protocol analysis). The participant is accompanied by the researcher throughout his visit. Visitor’s verbalisations are recorded, then typed and encoded for analysis. Many of the results obtained in this research confirm ideas that were presented in previous texts by scholars : the popularity of photographs ; the little interest for plans by non-architects ; the various aspects of the architectural project mentionned in relation to the objects exhibited ; the links established between objects as a means to identify the serial presentation. Other results, though, challenge some ideas frequently presented by authors, but never validated by empirical data. For instance, many curators consider a model to be a very popular and easily understood tool used to communicate architecture. In the present research, the model is not used very much by visitors. Therefore, the type of model and the way to exhibit it might make this tool more or less useful for meaning making by visitors. Many authors believe that non architects encounter difficulties and obstacles during their visit. The results obtained in this thesis show that, as expected, non architects do face obstacles, but they also reveal that architects themselves face many obstacles and challenges in their meaning making while visiting the architecture exhibition

This is about how pupils in years 4 to 6 of compulsory school and their teachers make meaning in teaching activities and texts. The aim of the study is to investigate the teaching and learning of writing and the pupils’ discursive texts. Another aim is to use linguistic theories and develop methods and analytical concepts for studying teaching practices. Sources for the material are the teaching practices in two classes, the teachers and the pupils. The field studies lasted for two years, consisting of observations and interviews. Twelve pupils’ texts and four writing projects are studied in depth. The theoretical framework is linked to systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, dialogical conception of language and new literacy studies. Analytical tools are also derived from rhetorical structure theory, relief theory and theory of text sequences. These tools have been adapted and are also applied in the analysis of the teaching practice. To analyse pupils’ meaning making in their texts, a theory of mobility in texts is used. The analyses show two different categories of texts and teaching practices. The hierarchically composed texts are characterized by hierarchies concerning the entire text. The sequentially coupled texts are characterized by many vague relations between text entities. One conclusion is that the students in the hierarchically composed texts develop knowledge during writing. They make meaning recursively when writing and they seem to grasp the text as a whole in a way they do not in the sequentially coupled ones. In the sequentially coupled texts, pupils seem to develop knowledge mostly before they write the text, rather than during the writing. In the hierarchically composed practice the pupils deepen their knowledge about text. The result can be interpreted as showing that pupils primarily need education about global text levels in order to develop text knowledge and subject knowledge. Teaching practice seems to promote all pupils’ meaning making if the practice is characterized by many interpersonal relations in the chains of spoken and written texts and if pupils learn to write texts that can structure their meaning making in a functional way.

Den här studien undersöker utifrån ett multimodalt, designteoretiskt perspektiv den didaktiska designen i läromedlet Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet. Syftet med studien är att visa de teckensystem som används i designen för lärande i Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet och den mening som deras semiotiska resurser erbjuder i lärandet. Dessutom tar studien upp det engagemang som eleverna visar, som ett tecken på transformation. Med transformation menas hur eleverna börjar bearbeta den erbjudna meningen och formar den till kunskap. Undersökningen är genomförd i en åk 4 på en svensk grundskola med hjälp av videoobservationer, lektionsanteckningar samt själva läromedlets utrustning. Resultatet blev att Bibeläventyret Gamlas testamentet fungerar multimodalt med många olika teckensystem och artefakter, där vissa är bärande och andra stöttande. Klassrummets spatiala möjligheter, instruktörens muntliga berättande med stöd av intonation, gester, blickar, kroppsspråk och förflyttningar, samt elevernas deltagande i meningsskapandet används om vartannat. Studien tyder på att den multimodala designen erbjuder stor mening och i det engagemang som eleverna visar finns en början till transformation och formation till ny kunskap. Tidigare forskning har kommit fram till att det finns signifikanta tecken på lärande i multimodala miljöer, ofta med inslag av digitala medier. Där bidrar studien till att visa att många fler teckensystem än vad som ofta används multimodalt kan kombineras och utöka möjligheten till lärande, särskilt i undervisningen av Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet. / This study analyses, from a multimodal, design theoretical perspective, the design for learning in the educational material Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet (The Bible Adventure – The Old Testament). The aim is to display the modes that are used in the design for learning in Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet and the meaning that is offered in learning by semiotic resources of these modes. The study also presents the involvement that the students show, as a sign of transformation. Transformation refers to how the students start to process offered meaning and form it into knowledge. The study was conducted in 4th grade classes in a Swedish compulsory school and is based on video observations of two hours of teaching, field notes and the analysis of the teaching material. The study shows that teaching Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet is multimodally conducted with many different modes and artefacts, where some bear more meaning and others are more supportive. The spatial opportunities of the classroom, the oral narrative of the instructor, including prosody in talk, body movements, gesture and gaze, as well as the students’ involvement in meaning making are used variously. The study shows that the multimodal design offers a significant meaning for learning and the involvement of the students shows how they make an initial transformation and formation of new knowledge. Previous research points to major signs of learning in multimodal environments, where digital media is often included. This study contributes to previous research in showing that many more modes can be used and combined multimodally at the same time compared to what is usually done and so extend the learning possibility particularly in teaching Bibeläventyret Gamla testamentet.
